VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER May, 2017 A Message From Mr. Morosin…… It is amazing that another school year is almost over in Viking Nation. Just in the past few weeks, Viking Nation has received a variety of honors: Mazama students, Naomi Age, Thomas Zacharias and Kristin Stotts were recently recognized at the local United Way volunteer of the year awards luncheon along with staff member, Jennifer DeForrest. Our FBLA and HOSA students had a great state competition and several of them have qualified for the national competition. One of our robotics students, Jeremy Sonneman, just returned from the Robotic World Championships where he competed in a five day competition in Louisville, Kentucky. Jeremy finished 34th in his division of 564 high school teams from 30 countries. He was a great ambassador for our school and the experience of meeting students from the other countries was priceless. Opening ceremonies included a parade of nations in the Kentucky Expo center where over 10,000 people were in attendance for the competition. The Mazama Symphonic Band will be participating in the OSAA State Championship for the second straight year. They went through a rigorous process of performing before judges who scored their material. Only ten 4A level bands even qualified out of more than 40 4A schools in the state. We are scheduled to perform Wednesday, May 10th, at Oregon State University. Viking Nation had another staff representative for this year for the Crystal Apple awards that occurred last week. Stephanie Harris was Mazama’s teacher representative winner. Congratulations to her for a job well done. Again this year, we are planning a few summer activities for the little Vikings to be. Registration is now open for the 2017 Mazama STEM&M Camp run by Laura Nickerson (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine) as well as Mazama’s Creativity Camp run by Cathy Nevala (Art, Foods, Music and Theater). STEM&M camp will be grades 1-6 and camp dates are July 31st-August 4th. Creativity Camp will be grades 2-5 and camp dates are July 24th-28th, both will be offered at Mazama High School. In addition to the fun learning opportunities, we will also be hosting another All Sports Camp for grades 1-6 on August 21st-25th. Camp will focus on basic skills, leadership and athleticism. Participants from all schools are welcome to attend. Camp will be staffed by MHS coaching staff and players. Please check the school web page for more information on any these events. FBLA Rocked at State! This year’s state conference in Portland was an amazing experience! FBLA attended the State Leadership Conference from April 5-8. Mazama students enjoyed going to the Lloyd Center to shop, visiting downtown Portland and eating a delicious dinner at Stanford’s. During the conference at the DoubleTree Hotel, members were given the opportunity to go to workshops such as Impress the Best, Dressing for Success, and The A-Z of Leadership. In the end, 30 members ended up placing in the top 10 on stage, and 11 members qualified for Nationals!
Members of the Mazama chapter who placed in the Top 10! Great job everyone!
Members did a great job representing Mazama FBLA by earning the Enthusiasm Award at State! All members were invited on stage to accept the prestigious award.

SENIORS and SENIOR PARENTS: Graduation is less than 2 months away. It’s very important that you stay on top of your grades and make sure that you meet graduation requirements by Wednesday, June 7th--your last day of classes. If you do not meet the graduation requirements, you will NOT receive your high school diploma. If you are within 1 credit (or 2 semester classes) of meeting graduation requirements, you will be allowed to walk with your class at graduation on June 9th but you will not receive your high school diploma. You will need to return to summer school to complete the credits you are deficient and earn your diploma. If you are more than 1 credit (or 2 semester classes) behind meeting graduation requirements, you will NOT be allowed to walk with your class at graduation and you will need to return to Mazama for summer school or a 5th year of high school to complete the credits you are deficient and earn your diploma. You may check all of your current grades and credits on eSchool. View your transcript and credits under the “Grades” tab. Mazama High School graduation requirements are outlined in the Mazama High School Curriculum Guide: http://mazamacounseling.weebly.com/mhs-curriculum-guide.html Parents: if your student is behind in credits, you should have received multiple letters regarding this issue along with your student’s graduation plan - a list of the classes they need to complete and when/how they will need to complete them. If your student is currently failing a required class, you may not have received a letter yet. Please check your student’s grades on eSchool to make sure they are currently passing all classes. If you need your eSchool login information, please contact our registrar Mrs. Kinnan at 541-883-5031. Night School and Credit Recovery: if your student is enrolled in Night School, they should be attending MondayThursday 3:30-5pm at Falcon Heights (on the Henley complex). If your student is taking Credit Recovery classes at Mazama, they work on these classes either 1st or 2nd period at their own pace. They should be nearing completion of these classes; if they are not, they need to pick up the pace in order to complete these classes by June 7th. Questions: If you have questions about your student’s Night School progress, please contact Don Scott, Night School teacher, at 541-883-6699 ext. 226 or scottd@kcsd.k12.or.us. If you have questions about your student’s Credit Recovery progress or their transcript and credits, please contact Mrs. Radmaker Reichardt at 541-8518834 or radmakerj@kcsd.k12.or.us.
