VIKING NATION NEWSLETTER March, 2016

Viking Nation, A school emergency can take many forms, weather, power outage, hazardous materials or a crisis at or near the school. It is possible we may need to have a controlled release here or at another location within the district. In most off site reunifications, Mazama will use Brixner Jr. High as our sister building but this may not always be accurate depending on the emergency, so you need to stay informed. Do you know your roll in a school emergency? It may be different than what you think. The most important decision you can make as a parent during a crisis situation is to stay home. We know your first reaction is to protect your student, but if you come to the school all you are doing is taking emergency responders away from their duties to keep our students safe. The school district and first responders are trained to control the situation and have assigned duties to perform. We need you to stay home and away from the school, district personnel or first responders will inform you as soon as we know the situation, but remember accurate information takes time to obtain and share. We or the district may use the auto dialer, email or text messaging to inform you of the situation. This is why it is vital we have accurate contact information on file and you are participating in the One Call Now system. In some cases we may ask students to send you information themselves, but please do not text or call them as you may be putting them at risk. Students and staff are taught to stay out of site and quiet in some emergencies and a phone ringing, vibrating or lighting up may draw attention to them putting them and others in danger. Additionally, please don’t call the school as this will remove needed staff members from the situation at hand. Ways you can monitor the situation is to check the district web site and watch the local news media. In any school emergency, keep your phone charged and close by. In the case reunification is necessary you will be informed where, when and what you need to bring to retrieve your student. Being patient in this process is for the safety of your student and for us to insure the proper adult is picking them up. You or your designee will need photo ID to pick up your student because there may be other staff members assisting that are not familiar with you or the student. If a parent or guardian cannot pick up their student, we will allow your emergency contact person you provided at registration for this process. In some situations the students may have “self evacuated” from the danger and contacted you personally. If this occurs it is very important you or the student notify the district office that they are with you and safe, please don’t call the school as we may still be addressing the situation. Remember these basic parent student reunification instructions. Stay Home, Stay Informed, Be ready, Be patient and Calm, Bring photo ID and send only one adult to pick up your student. Stay happy and safe! Steve Morosin Principal

All parents are invited and encouraged to attend Mazama’s Spring Parent Conferences on March 16th and 17th. Parental involvement is a key component to student success in school. We urge all parents to take some time and attend your son/daughter’s conferences. Mazama has scheduled some special educational activities on these dates as well. At 6:00 p.m. on both nights, there will be a workshop on “Preparing for College.” This will be an informational workshop for parents who have students going to college. Mrs. Milstead will hold a Senior Culminating Experience (aka Senior Project) meeting in the choir room at 6:30 p.m. both nights. This is a perfect time to learn if your student is on track to finish his/her project. Mrs. Milstead will also discuss “Oral Boards.” This information will tell you what to expect when your student presents his/her senior project and how he/she will be graded.

Regionals 2016

On February 5, Mazama FBLA members traveled to La Pine High School for the regional competition. Regionals was a great opportunity to get to meet new people and learn more about FBLA. There were a variety of workshops that members could attend including one called Personality Plus. The awards ceremony was exciting for Mazama competitors as they were called to collect awards that they worked so hard to earn. Mazama won more awards than any other school!!!
