EASTSIDE SK8 DISTRICT 2 SKATEPARK

Healthy Movement In order to promote a helathier San Antonio we must incourage a healthier lifestyle through movement, excersise, and dietery choices. District 2 of San Antonio has the highest rate of obesity and other health related issues. Usesing a skatepark as a solution to fix or reverse this epidemic we can start by changing lifestyle choices within the youth population. The skatepark draws inspiration from from the mechanical nature of the skateboard truck, specifically in the way that it pivots on an axis. This concept of motion was used in the planning of the skatepark. Furthermore photography, music, and graphitti are essential elements of the skateboarding culture in San Antonio. In order to inncorporate these elements into the skatepark the edges surrounding the main skateing arena are to be considered stages for live music, movies, and street art.

Visual Arts + Performing Arts The Visual Arts as well as the Performing Arts will be incorporated into the skate park through the use photography, videography, and graphitti. Skateboarding culture is one that has always had a strong connection to the visual arts. Photography and videography are two elements of state culture that can be incorporated into the park. Projection screens will broadcast pictures or videos taken by cameras placed on site. Furthermore designated panels will be used for graphitti, in the hopes of educating the youth. With this the skatepark can become a birthplace for culture and art, with the hopes of creating a healthier population of people. The skatepark can be used as a forumn for the performing arts, by creating a place for people to play music, dance, and play.

Movement and Pause The narrative of the pinball machine. A game of chance with moments of intense movement and pause is used to connect the theory of zoomscape to the narrative of the bus station. The pinball machine becomes a playing field of opportunity with multiple paths to a determined destination. While the player has some control over the destination, there is always a component of chance. “Zoomscape as a concept relates to the visual and spatial experience of movement through the landscape as seen through the lens of our car windshield. The Greyhound bus station becomes a platform for mobility across the landscape and is like the pinball narrative in that there are moments of movement and pause, with multiple routes to the same destination. Thus the experience of traveling the open road via Greyhound bus parallels that of the pinball narrative. A journey to the unknown, viewed through the windows of the bus. Thus the Greyhound bus station as a place of departure and arrival is seen as a place of opportunity dictated by the movement of people and bus as they connect user to destination.

The Wedge Development The wedge neighborhood of Tacoma marks the entry point into one of Tacomas oldest neighborhoods. It consists of six sites, two of which are church organizations, a salvation army, taco stand, and single family unit dwellings. The master plan calls for a complete revitalization of 6th ave complete with mixed use retail found at street level and multi family apartments located above. Located toward the front of the wedge neighborhood, Trinity Presbyterian is in need of repair, expansion, and money.

Adaptive Reuse The church was looking for a way to present themselves as a community center for the the Wedge neighborhood, one that could be used for afterschool programs and various other events including aa meetings and weddings. In order to rebrand Trinity church the existing worship space and tower would stay, paving the rest to make room for two new auxiliary buildings connected through the basement and fellowship hall. The two new buildings are positioned on the site with the hopes of creating a destination worth more than a sunday service. The south end of the site located along 6th ave is conceived of as a retail corridor complete with a restaurants and small shops found at street level with a small boutique hostel or bed and breakfast above. A new trade school is to be located at the north end of the site expanding upon the churches already growing list of after school programs. It will function as community outreach and include classroom spaces, a workshop, kitchen, offices, and storage space.

Acension and Nine Square The narrative of a new fashion center for the Testaccio neighborhood in Rome is based on the nine square grid, and the surrounding physical context which is primarily made up of blocky masses with internal voids used for its passive cooling properties. The site historically used to function as a piazza with a fountain in the center. The fountain was later moved and the site was transformed into a market. Today the market has been torn down and is to be returned into a much needed piazza. The plan for a new fashion center consists of an open air piazza on the ground floor that is based on a conceptual design done by a firm in Rome complete with restaurant. Above the user accends up into the fashion center containing a store, classrooms, an auditorium, and a fashion library. This movement is to be a seamless transition between inside and outside spaces.

Preventable Healthcare In order to promote a helathier San Antonio we must incourage a healthier lifestyle through movement, excersise, and dietery choices. San Antonio has the highest rate of obesity and other health related issues. It is known that the best way to prevent theses diseases is education and prevention through excerise. The site was choosen in San Antonio based on demographics , community needs, and proximity to a transit hub, therefore Zachery construction which is adjacent to Madla Transit hub on the east side of San Antonio was choose. The goal of the project is to connect the residential neighborhood to the east with the Madla Transit hub to the west through bike trails, and walking trails that would be transformed back into its natural ecology. The restoration of the river would fall in line with the Mission Reach restoration linking the project into the existing Saledo Creek Greenway.

Project Brief RESONANCE was birthed out of a studio culture formed between classmates during my stay at the University of Texas San Antonio. What started off as a conceptual art piece became an important art installation for the local neighborhood of Southtown. Southtown has a thriving art community that is host to monthly art walks taking place every first Friday of the month. During this time the neighborhood shuts down and opens its doors to art everywhere. The goal of the piece was to create a vibrant colorful, yet sleek expression of the neighborhoods vibrant culture. Utilizing donated money from kickstarter we chose cardboard and trace paper for the main structure. Utilizing Arduino and L.E.D’s the piece could respond to played music.
