CONCEPT and PRECEDENT STUDIES Design Language -formal structure emphsaized through vegetation and hardscape on the south part of the area, contrasting with diagonal structure of open green space in the centre due to the direction of travel, lastly merging into the north part of the site where vegetation is emphasized more curvy wrapping around the site, shown on the east side.
Concept Strategy -Imagining the area as a Cell, with a nucleus in the middle that is represented as open green space. The cell includes sub cells around the nucleus, expressed in my design as restorative environments/spaces, linked all together by capillaries, represented as paths.
Paley Park, New York City A very successful small urban park (‘vest pocket park’), enclosed by tall buildings. It was opened in 1967 by Zion and Breen
Green Acre Park, New York City One of New York City’s famed “vest pocketparks,” providing an emerald-green sanctuary for east-side residents and workers. ‘GreenAcre Park functions as a living room for the community and the “regulars: who use it make a significant contribution to the safety of the park.’ LSC 306- ADVANCED CONSTRUCTION NICHOLAS WOOLCOTT-BROWN 110225665

Wooden Structure Model
The first stage consisted of drawing some little diagrams associated to my overall concept of my design. This included the imagination of a Cell, containing a nucleus in the middle and sub cells around the nucleus within the cell. In this particular case, I envisioned the box as a representation of the Cell, with a rectangular shaped centre piece signifying the nucleus with irregular sized shapes connecting to the nucleus around the rectangle, thus representing the sub cells. The relation to my concept of ‘restorative environments’ is that the area will consist of ‘spaces’ (sub cells) that link and guide the user in and out the city centre capturing moments of ‘being away’, feeling a sense of ‘extent, compatibility and fascination’- the key restorative characteristics according to the Kaplan’s.
