Project

The object was to re-imagine what a library means in the 21st century given social, political, and historical contexts. The library has adapted into a melting pot of information sharing and storage but has began to forget about the human connection that happens within.

Solution

Pierson Place Library strives to re-link the interaction between history and storytelling that has been lost in the modern era. The aim of history is to provide insight into the past, inform and connect the present, and inspire the future. The Branch Library utilizes programs that build upon each other and lead to spaces where interaction and connection can happen. Storytelling is an essential activity to connect the younger and the older generations of a society.

develop a critical position about what a contemporary library is, should be, or can be. This position or attitude will help you clarify your own specific design objectives for the project.

History can change and adapt throughout time, however, it is best taught when it’s message is consistent each time it is passed down. The site for Pierson Place Library enticed citizens to veer off the sidewalks and walk through it. Recognizing this, the building was oriented to that movement in order to honor the history of the site in a new way by connecting public transit to the library and surrounding community.
