So these are just a few of the Sunway qualities and facts:

dear Traveller Welcome to Above and Beyond’s Sunway Safaris. In 1994 Shaun and I started with a minibus, one itinerary and a huge amount of enthusiasm for travel in Africa. Small groups – by travelling with a maximum of 12 people, you are able to witness Africa and have first hand contact with this amazing continent and its people without being a negative influence. This has been a key factor in our continued success. our trips appeal to a wide variety of ages. The average is 37 – with most being aged 25 to 60. The range of travellers gives a variety of perspectives which adds to the experience of each safari. 2 Sunway tour guides – group leaders are the key to any safari. on a Sunway safari you will travel with 2 qualified and registered field guides (Field Guides Association of SA). 2 guides as crew, not a guide and a driver, means interesting trips with maximum knowledge and information. our guides have a passion for Africa, her people and her wildlife, and they love nothing more than sharing their knowledge with you. Guaranteed departures – departure dates on each itinerary shown as bold are guaranteed departure dates. All other departures operate with a minimum of 4 clients. All inclusive price – when I travel myself, I always feel that if I’m in a country I should find and see the best parts. So when planning the Sunway routes we ensure that each trip provides the best inclusions and experiences. For example, if you go to Botswana – you have to visit the national parks in an open 4Wd – it is the essence of the Botswana wilderness. If you tour Zambia, then you must visit South Luangwa nP and do a game walk with a local scout. When booking on a Sunway Safari there are no hidden costs. All of the entrance fees are included, and a wide range of activities, and most meals. We have included many highlights in our tours, so that you will see and experience the highlights without having to pay extra when you get there. So when you decide on which safari company to book with, look carefully at what you’re actually getting. you may only visit a place once, make sure you get the most out of it.

Safety – All of our vehicles are custom built to ensure

comfortable and safe touring. each is constructed, by an authorised passenger vehicle builder, to the latest safety requirements, with a safety shell, and every seat has a lap belt. This gives you peace of mind when travelling with Sunway Safaris on the often demanding African roads.

Responsible Travel - our commitment to sustainable and responsible tourism is reflected in our low impact travel style where all we take is our photographs and all we leave are our footprints. Being an African company we have the grassroots contacts to make a real difference in the lives of the people whose lands we visit. on each itinerary in the brochure you’ll find this symbol which highlights just one of the sustainable travel initiatives that we support.

Solo Travellers – Going it alone won’t make your holiday more expensive; our reservations staff will match you up with another same-gender traveller to keep your holiday affordable. If however you request a single room or tent these are available, with a price supplement experience - We have more than 18 years experience planning tours throughout Southern Africa. As such, our itineraries and routes have been perfected over many years ensuring that your tour will run smoothly. We visit the highlights of Southern Africa, but ensure that you do not follow the well trodden tourist track. All of us at Sunway Safaris have extensive travel experience in Africa, and throughout the world. Being adventure travellers ourselves, we know how to plan trips that give you a broad experience of the countries that you will visit.

Based in Africa – Probably the most important part of a Sunway safari is that we are an African company with offices in South Africa and Botswana. We live in Africa, we travel in Africa and it is our passion for this amazing continent that makes Sunway your best travel option.

ADVENTURE EXPERTS We’ve been running safaris in Southern Africa for 18 years. This operational experience is reflected in our attention to detail. When you join a Sunway safari you can be secure in the knowledge that you’re in capable hands.

Your Safari Vehicle: All of our vehicles are bought new and serviced by Toyota and Mercedes agents, thus ensuring trouble free touring with backup support in practically every town in Southern Africa.

Wholesome meals: We create three scrumptious meals per day, as specified in the itinerary, from lunch on the day of departure until breakfast on the last day of your tour. Good healthy meals make happy travellers! The tour leaders do all the shopping and meal planning for each group and will try to obtain fresh produce wherever possible. A cooler box is provided for your drinks. On several nights we sample the fare at local restaurants, which because of individual tastes, will be own expense.

Trucks: African conditions are incredibly diverse and we travel in custom built safari vehicles that allow us to be completely self sufficient on safari. We have put a lot of thought into the design of the Sunway Safaris vehicles and our reliable fleet of safari trucks has proven itself. Sunway trucks are built to conform to the latest safety regulations. Your comfort is catered for with ample legroom and large windows for unobstructed photography.

Limited participation: Part of a Sunway trip is getting involved in general camp duties, it’s all part of your adventure. The guides will provide assistance, but an essential part of your safari is participation – from putting up your tent (on camping safaris) or packing away in the morning to helping with meal preparation, such as chopping tomatoes for the salad or stirring a pot. The group will help do dishes on a rotation basis – when everyone puts in a little effort the trip will run smoothly. Local Payments: A local payment is required on each Sunway safari and this is collected by your tour leader on departure. This covers a portion of local operational costs including fuel, locally purchased food supplies, entrance and park fees. This ensures that a portion of your tour price goes directly into the country you are visiting, benefiting local communities and contributing to the conservation of the area. Repeat discount: There is a 5% discount available to repeat clients, so if you have travelled with Sunway before and are considering another Sunway safari, remember to tell your original booking agent when you book again. Combining tours: If you have more time and want to extend your safari in Southern Africa it is possible to combine certain itineraries. These departures are highlighted on each itinerary. For example you can combine a South Africa tour with a Cape to Victoria Falls trip and have a continuous 40 day safari in Southern Africa. Remember that your second tour will qualify for the 5% repeat client discount!

4WDs: In the national parks of Botswana we will make use of our open 4WD game viewing vehicles which offer unobstructed views and the best possible game viewing experience. Our 4WDs (12+2 seater) are built to the latest safety standards with a built in safety shell and individual bucket seats with lap belts. Game viewing from these vehicles is extraordinary because with the sides rolled up, you feel part of the bush and incredibly close to the wildlife.

Safari Truck (12+2 seater) 1 Huge windows for unobstructed views 2 Roof hatches for viewing 3 An integrated cab & passenger compartment • Interior lights and stereo 4 A drinks cooler box • A luggage locker • Long range fuel tanks 5 2 spare wheels 6 An awning for protection from bad weather 7 A kitchen locker with freezer for supplies 8 A water tank • Gas stoves (minimise environmental impact of wood fires) 9 12/24 V charge point for camera batteries

Minibuses: Where road conditions allow, such as South Africa, Namibia and parts of Botswana we may also use minibuses.

Dossiers: This brochure gives the essential tour information. You can find more details on each itinerary on our website. You can also download a comprehensive tour dossier from the website. This general tour dossier includes details from a suggested packing list to which border posts we cross. If you have any questions, please ask.

ACCOMMODATED SAFARIS

CAMPING SAFARIS

If putting up a tent is not your style but traveling in Africa has always been your dream, we have the perfect safaris for you. For those looking for a little more comfort, but the continued quality service for which Sunway Safaris has become known, we offer a range of accommodated comfort adventures.

Camping in the wilds of Africa is the way to go – it’s an awesome experience to lie in your tent at night listening to the roar of lions or the haunting cry of a jackal! CAMPING - On safari you stay in designated camping sites in national parks, private reserves, private campsites and towns. Facilities are good with hot showers, electricity, clothes washing facilities and generally a bar and restaurant available. Some camps further north can be basic and have limited facilities and simple reed enclosures for showers but do have flush toilets!

Accommodated adventure safaris are based on our proven small group adventure safaris concept, but instead of sleeping in a tent you will overnight in a guest house, chalet, lodge or permanent tented camp. Accommodation is on twin share basis, some rooms with en-suite bathrooms and some with communal ablutions. Varying from twin bed permanent tents in a bush lodge, to a guest house a few metres from the beach. Comfortable, clean and friendly. All linen and bedding is provided so there is no need to bring a sleeping bag.

Sunway supplies all the camping equipment with the exception of your sleeping bag and pillow (available for rent). The canvas dome tents we use are large (2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 metre), with built in insect nets. Putting them up or down takes only 5 minutes. We supply 5 cm thick mattresses, which are warm and comfortable. The camp chairs have a backrest and all cooking and eating utensils will also be provided. Food is kept in sealed containers and cooler boxes or freezers ensuring fresh and hygienic food preparation.

Grading system: RUSTIC – indicates where rooms either share a bathroom, or where the accommodation available is more basic, for example the grass huts in the Kalahari with twin stretchers and shared ablutions.

In the Botswana national parks we generally use private wild campsites. On wild camping nights there are no facilities. Sunway will erect a bucket shower, with warm water from the fire, and a pit toilet tent. Wild camping is a true wilderness experience and we keep our impact on the environment to a minimum, taking out everything we take in.

COMFORT – indicates en-suite rooms in a lodge or guest house. Accommodation will be comfortable and the establishments chosen for their location and personal friendly service. Details of accommodation for each night are available on each detailed itinerary, or on our website.

It’s not all camping! On most safaris there will be a number of lodge or guest house accommodation nights. The facilities will be modest but clean and comfortable. Generally you will have an en suite twin room but sometimes you will be asked to share bathrooms with another room. Details are shown on each itinerary page. Single camping supplements: Booking solo - you do not pay any more for travelling as a single person. If you are travelling on your own, Sunway will automatically “tent” you with another same gender single person. If however you request a single tent, a limited number of these are available on each camping tour, with a price supplement. This will mean you have a single tent for the camping nights only, when in fixed accommodation you’ll share with another person. Please note that there is a limit of 2 single tents available on each tour.

Meals will be prepared by the Sunway guides and you’ll have roadside picnic style lunches on travelling days. Evening meals we eat around a fire and you’ll be involved in helping the guides prepare food and with cleaning up after meals. With a professional guide to lead your safari and a comfortable bed to sleep in every night you are assured of a fantastic holiday. You will not find a better value for money safari.

CAMPING ITINERARY Day 1 KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY [camping -LD] (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner) An early start as we depart Johannesburg at 6:30am and head north across the border into Botswana at Martins Drift. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a 4300 hectare community based wildlife reserve and is an integral part of the conservation and re-introduction of the white rhino to Botswana. We arrive in the late afternoon, set up camp and enjoy a game drive in search of rhino, zebra and wildebeest. Our evening is enjoyed around a campfire and we fall asleep to the sounds of the African wilderness. Day 2, 3, 4 CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE [camping BLD] The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is one of the largest game reserves in the world (52,800 square kilometres). Made famous by Mark and Delia Owen in the book Cry of the Kalahari, its remoteness, unforgiving climate and harsh terrain have kept it pristine and untamed. This reserve is characterised by vast open plains, saltpans and ancient riverbeds. During the summer months, when the rains fall, the Kalahari grasslands turn green and lush and the good grazing attracts large herds of zebra, wildebeest, springbok and gemsbok (oryx). Following the herds we hope to find the Kalahari lions. We use 4WD vehicles to visit the northern portion of the reserve and camp wild for 3 nights. Day 5 MAUN [camping BL-] Our next stop is Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Here we restock on

provisions and enjoy a swim in the pool, a cool drink in the bar and a restaurant meal (own expense). Opportunity to take a light aircraft flight over the Okavango in the late afternoon (own expense). Day 6 - 7 OKAVANGO DELTA [camping BLD] We venture by 4WD into the vast wilderness of the Okavango Delta where we meet our local community guides. Relax as your poler expertly guides your mokoro (canoe) through the winding channels of the delta. Camp is set up on the islands under a towering canopy of trees. We set out on foot for morning and evening game walks with local guides. During the heat of the day, time is spent relaxing in camp or swimming in the clear delta waters. Birdlife in the Okavango during the summer months is spectacular with all of the summer migrants returning to this water wonderland.

Heading off into Okavango Delta

Day 11 - 12 CHOBE [camping BLD] Chobe National Park is famous for large herds of elephants. We set up camp in Chobe and enjoy afternoon and morning game drives. Day 13 - 14 ZAMBIA / VICTORIA FALLS [camping Bx2--] Mid morning we embark on a cruise on the Chobe River; a brilliant wildlife experience where we get close to hippopotamus, crocodiles and elephants. Keep an eye out for the endemic Chobe puku. We then cross the border into Zambia at the Kazangula Ferry. Our afternoon is spent exploring the Mosi au Tunya NP and enjoying the views as the mighty Zambezi plunges 100m over the Victoria Falls. The following day is free to enjoy the range of adventure activities including river rafting, bungee jumping and the Flight of Angels over the falls (own expense). We sample the local cuisine at a variety of restaurants in the evening (own expense). Day 15 TOUR ENDS [ - B--] Tour ends at 8:00am after breakfast. Transfers to local airports available.

Day 8 - 9 NXAI PAN [camping Bx2 Lx1 Dx2] We return to the “poling station” and continue with our 4WD to the vast fossil lake beds which form the unique and beautiful Nxai Pan National Park. These pans, surrounded by baobab and umbrella thorn trees, are covered with short nutritious grass that attracts the wildlife. One of a few parks that is best in rainy season, we spend the next two days on game drives hoping to spot large herds of springbok, gemsbok and zebra. The seven giant trees that form the famous Baines Baobabs are a highlight of the visit.

We head north to the Cederberg and explore the rugged landscape on foot before relaxing in chalets for the evening. Day 3 GARIEP RIVER [tented lodge BLD] We make our way into the more arid regions and upon entering Namibia, we stay at a lodge on the Gariep River. Namibia’s southern border river flows quietly and peacefully and the river valley is hardly affected by tourism. The riverbed is sandy, the water clean and clear. Time free for swimming and relaxing or you can adventure down the river in canoes (own expense). Day 4 FISH RIVER CANYON [lodge BLD] The Fish River Canyon, situated along the lower reaches of the Fish River, is one of the most impressive natural beauties in the southern part of Namibia. With its depth of up to 550 metres, the Fish River Canyon is

the second largest canyon in the world. We make our way to the canyon in the afternoon to watch as the sun slips over the canyon’s rim. Day 5 - 6 NAMIB DESERT [tented lodge BLD] The parched Namib Desert has endless orange dunes blown into sharp ridges by the sand-shifting wind and at Sossusvlei they form a gateway into the Namib Desert. We will walk to Sossusvlei, explore Sesriem Canyon and watch a dramatic sunset over the world’s highest sand dunes. Day 7 – 8 SWAKOPMUND [guest house Bx2 Lx1-] Swakopmund is a popular seaside resort with a slightly nostalgic atmosphere, characterized by numerous colonial buildings. In terms of flora, both the Welwitschia Mirabilis and the Kokerboom grow on the stony plains of the Namib and many beautiful specimens surround the coastal town. Swakopmund is also the adventure activity capital of Namibia. Day free to explore the town or try dune boarding (own expense). Day 9 - 10 DAMARALAND [chalets BLD] Namibia is a land of great contrasts and Damaraland demonstrates this with stark plains, petrified forests and ancient valleys leading to rocky outcrops and the soaring peaks of the Brandberg Massif Mountains. We’ll also visit the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. Day 11 – 12 ETOSHA NP [guest lodge or tented camp BLD] Once a vast lake fed by the Kunene River, the pan that is Etosha NP dried up thousands of years ago when the river waters chose a new course. Etosha is big game country. We take game drives around the huge pan to find the elephants, herds of antelope and lions around the waterholes. We stay at a lodge on the outskirts of the national park.

Day 13 WINDHOEK [guest house BL-] This pretty town, beautifully situated in a valley, combines the architecture of a modern city with numerous buildings in the style of the German colonial era. The charm of the city of Windhoek lies in its harmonious blend of African and European cultures and the friendliness of its people. We have an evening restaurant meal (own expense). Day 14 KALAHARI [San Bushmen huts BLD] Crossing into Botswana we overnight in rustic, grass huts in the heart of the Kalahari. We take a walk with the local Bushmen to learn fascinating bush skills. Day 15, 16, 17 OKAVANGO DELTA [tented lodge x1 BL-] [tented camp x2 BLD] The Okavango Delta is the only inland delta in the world. Instead of flowing into the sea, the annual flood of fresh water, spreads over 15000sq km of the Kalahari sand in a maze of lagoons and channels. We journey deep into the Okavango Delta on Mokoro (canoes). We have 2 nights at our tented camp and enjoy game walks, swimming, the birdlife and game in this pristine wilderness area. Day 18 MAKGADIKGADI PANS [tented Lodge or Chalets BL-] The shimmering saltpans of Makgadikgadi are the size of Switzerland and most of the time appear as a glaring, white, endless plain. When the rain comes a dramatic change takes place as the pans come to life with frantically feeding water birds and great herds of zebra, wildebeest and springbok. Day 19, 20, 21 ZAMBIA / VICTORIA FALLS [tented camp Bx3 - -] Magnificent Victoria Falls is one of seven natural wonders of the world. David Livingstone ‘discovered’ the falls in 1885 and named them after his queen. The scene he encountered was a mile-wide sheer basalt fault line over which the mighty Zambezi tumbled to a depth of 100m. The falls are the centre of a wide range of activities, including white water rafting, elephant back rides and scenic flights (own expense). Tour ends after breakfast.

CAPE TOWN

JOHANNESBURG

SOWETO A must whilst in Johannesburg is a half day tour of SOWETO. The South Western Township was created during the apartheid era and now many people choose to live there – some 3-5 million people inhabit Soweto. Most of the population are middle income earners, living in small box shaped brick houses. Only 10% of the population live in poverty but in contrast Soweto also has the highest concentration of millionaires in the country. On the tour you will visit a shantytown. The shacks have electricity, there is running water and the council even collects rubbish once a week! You will talk to the locals and may be invited into their homes or schools. You will see Barragwanath Hospital (the largest in the world), the local market and the largest taxi rank in Africa. The Hector Pieterson Museum was established to preserve the history and the memory of all those who were involved in the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976. Soweto has the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners live. Nelson Mandela’s house is now a Museum, but Desmund Tutu still lives here. Learn much more about the history and what it is really like to live in Soweto (past and present) from our guides.

The tour can be booked on arrival in Johannesburg. Departs daily (except Sunday afternoon) at 8:30am & 1:30pm Soweto tour $95 per person

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL Sunway’s environmental policy applies to everyone travelling with us and allows us to experience the lands we are visiting but also have a positive influence on the communities and ultimately the natural environment of Southern Africa. Our tour leaders will help you with the implementation of these policies, many of which will seem like common sense. All of our tours feature at least one visit to a local community project such as: village visits, animal rehab projects, or employment of local guides. These local initiatives help to maintain local cultures and also sustain the ideals of wildlife conservation. As a Sunway traveller it gives you the chance to meet local people and see how tourism is benefiting Africa.
