Slovenia
Small country, big heart
The entire northern border of Slovenia is an Alpine joy for skiers and snowboarders alike. The most well known Kranjska Gora, is located in the Northwest of the Triglav National Park.
Why visit Slovenia?
The world famous and most photographed beauty spot of Lake Bled with its island church, castle and the Julian Alps in the background.

Tucked into a curve in the Adriatic alongside Italy, Australia, Hungary and Croatia with Trieste literally just down the road, Vienna and Rome thirty minutes away by air, and Venice, Salzburg and Munich a few hours by road, Slovenia is thoroughly European. Indeed, with its castles, crafts, mountains, caves, lakes, ports, culture, fertile farms and annual jazz festival this boutique country is very much Europe in microcosm. In the capital, Ljubljana, head for the old town and pull up a chair at one of the cafes, teeming with people, beside the river. The sun falls on cobbled streets, quaint bridges, old churches shaded by spreading trees and the river glides so quietly that you hardly notice it. It is people-watching heaven.
Drive to Lake Bled, probably the best-known tourist attraction in Slovenia, dominated by an 11th-century castle perched on a rocky outcrop like a brooding bird of prey. You can walk around the lake in just over an hour but why not take a few hours and stop at a cafe, then take a boat across to the island in the middle of the lake, where a flight of steps leads to the tiny Church of the Assumption of Mary. If you are lucky there might even be a wedding happening while you are there. Travel through majestic, glacial alpine valleys and perhaps spend a night at a tourist farm – an unforgettable experience. In the traditional farmhouses with their painted beehives and carefully tended vegetable gardens, there is a vivid sense of an unchanging rural community rooted in family life. The mountain scenery is glorious but the human landscape also tugs strongly at the heartstrings. Slovenia is that sort of place.

Predjama Castle Postojna Caves Lipica
Is there a friendlier country in Europe than Slovenia? For the first-time visitor to Slovenia, the uncomplicated warmth of the welcome makes an indelible impression. Slovenia is a small country with a big heart.
But Ljubljana is not Slovenia’s trump card. The best of the country can be found in the unspoilt rural areas, particularly in the mountains abutting the Austrian border. The tallest mountains have a covering of snow and the meadows are a riot of colour: crocuses, dandelions, even the odd wild strawberry, peeping through the grass. Clear rivers wind through dappled valleys, past fields of cows that look so happy you expect them to burst into song.

Slovenia is home to around five hundred castles, manors and ruins. Some restored and some converted to hotels, such as the charming Otocec Castle located on an island in the middle of the Krka river near the Croatian border. The Eastern countryside is also well known for it’s health spas and outdoor wellbeing.
Climate: June through September can be expected to be warm and sunny and the other months cooler with winter sports a speciality in the Julian Alps.
Currency: Euro. Visas: Current Australian passport holders do not need visas for stays less than 90 days.
Events & Festivals: Each year Slovenia offers a wealth of cultural events, festivals and sporting events too numerous to list here. See www.slovenia.info for more details on events such as the famous, annual Maribor Music Festival. Slovenia also has many historic towns, each of which have their own unique festivals.
Piran Portorož
The old seaport of Piran is a quaint coastal town preserved in its medieval layout of narrow cobblestone streets and intimate cafes. Portorož, the ‘Nice’ of Slovenia is a summer mecca for the locals and foreigners alike. A seaside town filled with colourful hotels and colourful people.

Why not extend your Slovenian holiday and take a voyage of discovery through this beautiful part of Europe. The Dalmatian Coast has all the advantages of the Mediterranean, but without a lot of the hype of Greece or Italy. Croatia is definitely my tip for “the” place to visit for your next laidback, relaxing vacation – not to mention a fantastic history lesson thrown in. Take a cruise through any or all of the gorgeous islands dotted along the Dalmatian coast or drive yourself and explore the inland areas where castles, churches, shrines and monasteries intermingle with national parks and vineyards.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Cruise to the Croatian Islands of Mljet, Korčula, Vis, Havr, and Brac. Hvar Town Square has medieval buildings and streets, encompassed by city walls with a fortress on the adjacent hill top. Brac has bicycling and snorkelling. The beach at Bol is famous for wind and kite surfers.
Travel a little further and discover another Mediterranean jewel – a world of rugged beauty and vast contrast – some even call it the next “Riviera”. With over 1200 islands just off its coastline, it is of course Croatia, and what is known as the Dalmatian Coast.

Food & Wine: Croatia has it own food specialities, good wines and famous spirits and food and wine festivals occur throughout the year. Sea food and lamb dishes are particularly plentiful and paprika spice cevapcici are ubiquitous. The famous Zinfandel grape variety has its origins on the Dalmatian coast whilst “Rakia”, flavoured spirits, is a national drink in Croatia as well as adjacent countries. Rakia, frequently home made, comes in various flavours and styles and is made by fermenting fruit such as grapes, peaches or damson plums etc the latter well known as “Slivovitz”.

Non Australian passport holders should check directly with their consulates for visa requirements and must also ensure that they have the correct re-entry documentation for return to Australia. Failure to obtain visas can result in the need to cancel travel arrangements and incur cancellation charges. It is absolutely essential that the names of passengers provided to BS/IT are exactly as they appear in the passenger’s passport. Name changes are considered as a cancellation by airlines and require seats to be re-booked and tickets re-issued which may result in loss of confirmed seating and can incur the client in additional charges. It is the client[s] responsibility to ensure that they have all necessary vaccinations and take the appropriate and necessary health precautions prior to travel and that they carry with them all the appropriate mandatory documentation. Clients are responsible for obtaining appropriate advice as to current vaccination requirements as some countries will not allow entry unless the correct and completed Certificate of Vaccination is carried Where any booking involve hire car service clients are advised to carry an international driver’s licence. 9 Travel Insurance Cancellation and refund conditions are strictly enforced so BS/IT strongly recommend clients take out comprehensive travel insurance at the date of booking which covers cancellation and delays due to unforeseen circumstances. Clients are strongly recommended to arrange such cover with their travel agent or their BS/IT consultant. BS/IT advise clients to ensure that all pre-existing health conditions and all other relevant matters are declared when applying for insurance. If travel insurance offered by other providers such as credit card companies is used it is recommended careful consideration be given to ensuring that such insurance cover is adequate. 10 Brochure and Website accuracy Rooms, facilities and scenes appearing in the BS/IT and service providers brochures and websites represent those rooms, facilities and features associated with the hotels, tours and other services offered at the time of compilation of the brochure[s] or website[s] . Photographs and descriptions are accurate at the time of printing/loading and every effort is made to ensure the brochures and website illustrations are as accurate as possible but BS/IT cannot guarantee that these necessarily depict the rooms, facilities, features or seasonal scenes current at the time the booked service is provided. Accommodation standards may not necessarily coincide with other international standards. Rooms are often smaller than similar categories in Australia, double beds are not always available and air conditioning is the exception rather than the rule. Triple share rooms are generally based on an extra rollaway bed, not always suitable for adults. 11 Privacy In order for BS/IT to process any booking clients agree that BS/IT may use any personal information provided by them to BS/IT such as but not limited to names, gender, age, postal and e-mail addresses, passport details, disabilities, dietary/religious requirements /persuasion etc. Such information may also be provided by BS/IT to security or credit checking companies, and public authorities such as customs and immigration if required by them or by law. On occasion BS/IT may also use contact details provided to distribute brochures or other travel related material. BS/IT undertakes not pass on such client information to any person or organisation not involved in service supply relevant to any booking made. 12 Complaints Any complaints while travelling should be made immediately to the relevant service provider’s representative or relevant local authorities. Clients should allow the service supplier the opportunity to directly resolve any complaint at the time it arises but if any complaint remains unresolved, to obtain BS/IT’s support, clients must lodge a written detailed complaint with the service supplier within 14 days of the date of returning to Australia on completion of any booking. Any complaints that remain unresolved after completion of this procedure must be conveyed to BS/IT in writing within 28 days of the first date of communication with the service supplier together with all supporting documents and BS/IT will then endeavour to assist in resolving the matters complained about but cannot guarantee the client a successful outcome. BS/IT will not involve itself in any complaint where the client does not observe the time limits set out above or provide sufficient evidentiary detail to justify the complaint.
