Taliesin West, Arizona, was architect Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and architectural school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. During his lifetime, Wright continually altered and added to the complex of buildings, all of which were constructed by his apprentice. Taliesin West is one of the masterpiece of Frank Wright's 'Organic Architecture', famous for the strong connection of indoor and outdoor space. In the building complex, a bridge is standing in the center, echoing surrounding rooms with different functions, which is really intriguing. The analysis is subdivided into three chapters to explore the prototype of bridge, which focus on the "link" "frame" and "flow".

LINK Bridge links two parts that are not connected with each other. Apart from the stone bridge in the crosscenter, other elements, such as fountain, corridor and pathway, also act as links, integrating all the horizontal spaces which function differently, and building up strong relationship of interior and exterior space.

FRAME The stone bridge frame the scenery of McDowell Mountains in the distance. According to a series cross sections of different rooms, the similarities indicate the essential idea of bridge: to frame the space below it. Frame also act as a method to interact with the landscape, showing strong articulation in horizontally rythem.

FLOW Bridge doesn't block but provides a pathway for the flow underneath it. With this architectural characteristics, not only the circulation are designed, the illumination and visual experience are also translated. Actually, in this way, nature can be implicitly invited into interior space.

Book My analysis derived from the bridge. With this prototype, I explore the three architectural ideas existing at different scales. As a result, the book consists of 3 chapters which are 'link', 'frame' and 'flow', with a site brifing at the begining. The box that hold it are designed to show the landscape and basic level of the building complex.

SITE The site for the three groups are a imaginary grid. Each person is responsible for one individual site, 6.25m X 6.25m With no built environment or landscape, the context is the neighbors houses which are growing and changing dynamicly at the same time. My site is at the inner corner of the village, which could be regarded as a entrance part, relatively public space.

The study fieldtrip is based on the "silk road". The study areas enjoy long history of interaction between nomadicand sedentary cultures. Nowadays, under the background of globalization and urbanization, this area confronts t h e c h a l l e n ge s i n e co n o m i c development and cultural conservation. Envelop sketches are recorded during the study fieldtrip, especially site visit in the old towns, Kashgar. We tried to translate the language used in venacular houses and urban texture from the five 'species' (left). Photo from Janis Law
