TABLE OF CONTENTS PROJECT BRIEF JANUARY 27 JANUARY 29 FEBRUARY 3 HEATHERS MOVIE REVIEW FEBRUARY 10 FEBRUARY 12 FEBRUARY 17 SIX WORD PITCHES FEBRUARY 19 FEBRUARY 24 FEBRUARY 26 MARCH 2 FINAL POSTER FINAL B&W SEPERATIONS PROJECT BRIEF
FOR THIS PROJECT, YOU WILL DEVELOP A POSTER FOR A CULT FILM. BASED UPON RESEARCH, YOU WILL EACH PROPOSE A CULT FILM OF YOUR CHOOSING TO DESIGN A POSTER FOR. USING TOOLS AND SKILLS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE COMPUTER, YOU WILL CREATE A PROVOCATIVE AND VISUALLY COMPELLING POSTER TO PROMOTE YOUR CHOSEN FILM. EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED UPON DEVELOPING A STRONG CONCEPTUAL APPROACH TO YOUR CHOSEN FILM.YOU WILL NOT CREATE A “FLOATING HEAD” POSTER, BUT RATHER VISUALLY INTERPRET THE CONTENT, MOOD, AND ATMOSPHERE OF YOUR CHOSEN FILM. YOU WILL UTILIZE HAND AND DIGITAL COLLAGE FOR YOUR IMAGE MAKING. RESEARCH THE FILMS, LOOK AT TRAILERS, ESTABLISH A LOOK AND FEEL FOR YOUR APPROACH. A SUCCESSFUL FILM POSTER SETS THE TONE FOR THE FILM, AND IS NOT DEPENDENT UPON THE STARS, BUT RATHER A STRONG AND WELL EXECUTED CONCEPT THAT CLEARLY ARTICULATES THE MOOD OF THE FILM.
INITIAL THOUGHTS: I FEEL LIKE THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BE REALLY FUN, BUT ALSO PRETTY DIFFICULT TO COMPLETE. I FEEL LIKE WITH SOME OF THE MOVIES ON THE LIST THAT ARE MORE WELL KNOWN AND ICONIC ITS HARD TO CREATE A WORK OF ART THAT NO ONE HAS SEEN- BUT I ALSO THINK IT WOULD BE FUN TO CREATE SOMETHING UNIQUE AND OUT OF THE BOX FOR AN ICONIC MOVIE.

Heathers Movie Review Heathers, Michael Lehmann, 1988, https://www.imdb.com/video/ vi967246105?ref_=tt_pv_vi_aiv_1 This film has multiple themes that during this day and age, would be considered highly controversial. Heathers is a cult-classic that uses issues such as teen suicide, mental health disorders, homophobia, and gun control as dark-jokes in this film. In the high school that this movie takes place in, there is an overarching theme of stereotypes. They hone into the different popularity/social levels the students are and judge them on that. The central idea in Heathers circulates JD and how his behavior in the movie is romanticized and normalized. Winona Ryder’s character, Veronica, meets Christian Slater’s loner character JD and quickly swoons over his ‘bad boy’ attitude. After each of JD’s violent incidents, Veronica doesn’t have an ’im going to call the police right now’ attitude- but rather laughs it off. Romanticizing violence is something that we still see in modern movies like any movie from the Marvel series- but the content of the violence in Heathers is something we don’t see anymore. This movie could not be released in 2020, due to the seriousness of school shootings as well as other sensitive issues expressed in the film. Director Michael Lehmann expands on this idea: “Now, suddenly, the world’s gone into reverse. Somebody shifted the gears, and it’s started to go backward. And just because of that simple fact, the themes in this movie start to become relevant again.” Lehmann hits the nail on the head with this quote- in 1988, the dark humor and references in this movie came across as dark comedic rather than completely messed up. Overall, this is an iconic film that has witty lines and quotable sayings. Heathers was a step forward in the ‘dark-comedy’ genre and walked so that movies such as Mean Girls could run.
ICONIC ELEMENTS: scrunchies blazer the color yellow, green, & red croquet blue liquid (poison) knife JD’s long jacket funerals bomb home phone barbie doll slurpie pinenuts SAYINGS: “how very” -Veronica “did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?” -Heather Chandler “our love is God” JD “f*ck me gently with a chainsaw. Do I look like Mother Theresa?” Heather Chandler “chaos is what killed the dinosaurs, darling.” – JD “I love my dead gay son.” – Kurt’s Dad “society nods its head at any horror the American teenager can think to bring upon itself.” -JD “greetings and salutations.” JD EVENTS: JD using the blank bullets in the cafeteria with Ram and Kurt Veronica throwing up on Heather Chandlers shoes at the party Heather McNamara taking pills in the school bathing After Heather Chandlers death, the class learning about her suicide note in class the next day Veronicas fake suicide scene to trick JD

Project brief CONCLUDING THOUGHTS GOING BACK AND READING MY INITAL THOUGHTS ON THIS PORJECT I AGREE WITH THE FACT THAT IT’S HARD MAKING SOMETHING SEEM ‘NEW’ AND ‘EXCITING’ FOR AN EXTREMELY ICONIC MOVIE LIKE HEATHERS. HOWEVER, I REALLY ENJOYED THE CHALLENGE AND OVERALL THE PROCESS OF THIS PROJECT HAS CHANGED THE WAY I LOOK AT WORKS OF ART LIKE POSTERS. I THINK THE MOST INTERESTING POINT OF THE PROJECT IS TO SEE WHAT MY INITIAL CONCEPTS AND SKETCHES AND SEE HOW FAR THEY HAVE COME. IT’S SUPER INTERSTING TO GO BACK AND TIME AND THINK HOW I THOUGHT I HAD A SOLID IDEA THREE WEEKS IN, WHEN IN REALITY I REALLY DIDN’T. I PERSONALLY LOVE HOW MY POSTER TURNED OUT AND WILL HANG IT UP IN MY ROOM!
