Tiffany & Co.

Vibrancy, Endless Vitality

“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past,” is how F. Scott Fitzgerald, chose to end his celebrated novel, The Great Gatsby. Framed by one of f iction’s most iconic characters, Jay Gatsby was a man who lived and breathed nostalgia, romantically fixated on the past. The long-awaited movie adaptation by Baz Luhrmann is another triumphant attempt to recreate the golden age of a lavish American era.

That Fitzgerald's great American novel took place during one of the country's most iconic moments is no coincidence. Oscar-winning costume director Catherine Martin delved deep into the Tiffany archives to create jewellery accessories for Luhrmann's film, finding antique pieces that stylishly and expressively told Fitzgerald's story on the allure of their feted and resplendent heritage alone. With long strands of pearls flowing as freely as champagne in Upper East Side soirÊes, and headpieces, bracelets and rings decked in diamonds like bon mots dotting those cocktail conversations, the aspirations of Fitzgerald’s characters live on as Tiffany connoisseurs – all are driven by aspiration and delight in extravagance, the scions of a gilded generation.

protagonist, complemented by a series of hand ornaments, earrings and brooches, all from the Tiffany collection. The centrepiece is surely an elegant charm shaped like a daisy, aglow in luxuriously golden yellow. Art Nouveau floral patterns contrast straight geometric lines, both opulent and classic at the same time. If they evoke a striking familiarity, it’s because these forms mimic the legendary New York skyline, paying tribute to radiant high-rises that frame the city.

As one of modern film’s most dramatic and visually sensational directors, there is no bigger stage than Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby for the grandest display of Tiffany’s legacy – Broadway for the most vaunted and sparkling cast of jewellery and precious stones, If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere – that’s the quintessence of the American Glamour, waiting for its cue within the distinctive Tiffany Blue Box topped with a white bow. “Can’t repeat the past? Why, of course you can!” said Jay Gatsby himself. Indeed. Text = Nicole Chan
