Site Description

The building chosen for this indoor soccer facility is the current site of furniture retailer IKEA. It was opened in 2008 in West Chester, Ohio after two years of construction. Clark Construction was hired to complete the building, having been a part of an earlier IKEA project in Canton Michigan. The retail store was brought into the area by a group of developers who have helped bring other business to West Chester. IKEA is the largest furniture company worldwide and prides itself on sleek Northern European design that is functional, easy to put together, and sustainable. Started in 1943 in Sweden the company has grown into a household name throughout the world, having 276 stores located throughout 25 countries. Currently the company is working toward running on 100% renewable energy and becoming more environmentally friendly in its manufacturing processes. The site is in a great part of the tri-state, located just North of Cincinnati. The surrounding businesses consist of hotels, restaurants, retail, gas stations and other warehouse facilities. The building itself is placed right next to I-75, a major road that is directed North to South and spans over 1500 miles across the United States. This makes the site easily accessible off of a large, well known road. The building is clearly visible from the highway and from the main access road off of the exit. It sits on a large piece of land that consists of 1600 parking spaces and a small pond located behind the building. No other buildings sit directly next to it, making it the main focus of the site. There are seven truck docks behind the building and entrances to the site are located on the North and East sides. The structure is regular in shape and has a column grid integrated into the space. There are both double height and multi level spaces throughout the interior. The ceiling in its full height dimension reaches 30 feet high and exposes the structure of the building. Three large elevators and an escalator along with a few staircases are already existing in the space. There are also multiple forms of egress located on all sides of the building. Currently there are very few views the outside, but there is opportunity to use the small skylights they have right now to a larger capacity or create views through the docking stations, providing some vision to the pond and express way

6

Throughout the building process of most of the IKEA stores, there is a conscious effort to create a more sustainable environment. This store is one of the first of the IKEA stores to have solar panels spread over the roof to cut down on energy costs and emissions. They also try to reduce the amount of waste and recycle most anything possible.

mezzanines per story, and the aggregate total area of the

mezzanines may not exceed one-third of the story on which

they are located; otherwise they must be counted as a

separate story.

The Uniform building Code allows 1-hour non-combustible construction

to be used for mezzanines in a building of a higher construction

type if the mezzanine is unenclosed.

A mezzanine is usually required to be open to the room in which it is

placed. An enclosed portion that does to exceed 10% of the

AstroTurf

AstroTurf is an artificial playing surface made to resemble grass, without needing the upkeep that a normal grass field would need. It is the premium choice for indoor fields of all kinds and the GameDay product is ideal for an indoor soccer center surface. It mimics the look and feel of natural grass and is cushioned to give support to any player on the field. The turf is made of five layers that create a traction and comfort like no other in the industry. Astro Turf offers one of the best green products in the artificial turf industry. There are many ways the company contributes to LEED and sustainability through their products. The GameDay Grass product is made with a backing that includes a technology called BioCel. It is an environmentally friendly polyurethane backing system that eliminates the need for petroleum-based polymers. The ingredients made to create this backing is unharmed by any moisture that may come in contact with it and also allows for any drainage to penetrate through the backing if necessary. Using the BioCel technology also reduces the need for petroleum based polymers, reducing landfill waste, improving indoor air quality, and extending the life of the product. The backing also includes Celcerum which is a compound that stabilizes and toughens the polyurethane backing. The components is sustainable, post-consumer and recovered materials. This helps the product greatly contribute to LEED points. This particular turf also has all-rubber infills consisting of high durable rubber made from post consumer recycled tires. There is no health risks using the recycled tires and it is EPA approved for athletic fields. For every field produced, AstroTurf uses about 12,000 tires.

Form Us With Love / Hexagon Wall Tile

Traullit Decor is a 60 year old Swedish company that uses recycled materials to create materials made from wood wool, cement and water. For years they have been devoted to making boards and panels of the product to be located in stables and schools, but has recently opened itself up to what the design world can offer for their product. The hexagon tile itself was designed in collaboration with the company Form Us With Love, who were looking for a unique tile to use in their office. All of their products are made from natural components and offer a variety of unique characteristics. These tiles have the ability to even out the humidity in the air by either absorbing or emitting moisture to the ambient air where it is located. This action creates a high pH value which reduces the chance of mold in the space as well. The product also collects heat along with moisture and releases the stored energy when the ambient air temperature drops. The materials reduce reflection of noise and are a great way to reduce noise in a public space. The product also has a Class 1 coating making it fire resistant. The surface of the tile is extremely durable and all measurements have shown the product to have low emissions, making it better for your health and well being.

DIRTT Wall Solutions / Bespoke

DIRTT is a company that offers walls, doors, floors, and accessories. All of their products are moveable and have sustainable features. They also can be intermixed to create a design and experience that is individual to each project and company they are hired by. They offer wall components that play with angles, dimension, and shapes. The product is also very versatile in the color, printing and forms it offers. Their products are made in a controlled factory environment, where recycling is a day to day activity. There is very little waste in the first place however because of the intelligent design software ICE that they employ in their production. The program determines the best length the material needs to be and picks the best cut points for each piece. Transportation pollution is also cut down do to light weight packaging and efficient truckloads carried to sites. The factory itself also employs solar and wind power and has about on third the footprint as a normal production facility. DIRTT Walls are a great product due to the fact they are moveable and able to be removed and re-purposed. They allow for new systems to be employed and for any rearrangement of space, which cuts down on new materials needed. Water-based, non-toxic finishes are used on all products they create. The company has earned a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody accreditation and can ensure careful product tracking through the entire process. The versatility of the Bespoke products line offers a lot of options in creating unique feature walls in the lobby, office, or congregational spaces. It also leaves possibilities open for graphic statements at one or numerous points around the facility. The geometries that can be created with the product are countless and are sure to add something special to the space.

Eco-Timber Hardwood Flooring / Hard Maple

Eco-Timber Flooring offers natural hardwood floors with excellent green standards and is an avid promoter of forest conservation. They offer a variety of woods and pride themselves on being FSC certified. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council, which is an independent, non-profit organization that has the capabilities to track wood from the forest all the way to the consumer so you can tell where exactly it came from and how it got to you. FSC is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council and is the only certification that qualifies as evidence of sustainability of a wood product. This is excellent when attempting to receive LEED points in a project. Eco-Timber is also a product that offers low emitting materials and formalsehyde-free adhesives, bettering air quality for all users. It uses 100% FSC-Pure wood from certified forests and is all grown and manufactured in the United States. Being domestically raised, it lessens the cost and time of production and travel, which also lowers automobile usage on its way through production. The warranty on the product is 25 years in a commercial setting, making it a very durable and lasting product able to stand up to the amount of traffic moving through the space. The wood is a great green product to add to the space, hinting at the natural qualities that exist in an outdoor setting, where most soccer games are played throughout the year. It has the capability to not only be used on the flooring in some areas, but has the possibility of being carried up the wall as a feature in a specific area.

Field Diagrams

Below is a diagram of a typical indoor field. They are slightly small than a regulation outdoor field and sometimes have walls around them. I hope to not have restraining walls in this facility so it will be more similar to and outdoor field and the rules that apply there.

Overlaying two smaller fields over a larger field would reduce the footprint and still allow for more fields that originally envisioned in one space.
