MI SSION STATEMENT . . .
Enriching the quality of life through recreation, education & preservation.
Executive Director’s Letter Dear Bourbonnais Township Park District residents:
As we say goodbye to summer, we get ready to say hello to the most exciting time of the year at the park district. Perry Farm in the fall is an exciting place to be. The trees are changing colors, there is a brisk nip in the air, scarecrows appear on our fence line, and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow lurks somewhere nearby! I love looking out my office window here at the Perry Farmhouse to see the yearly transformation of the farm. Speaking of transformations, there are many occurring at the park district and I could not be more excited. This past spring we launched online registration for programs and the next step is the ability to purchase Sleepy Hollow tickets online. We also launched our new website and will continue to evolve it for ease of use for our patrons. We are also upgrading the look of our program book. Watch for more changes in the coming year and please let us know any suggestions you may have. We now have gift cards available to purchase at any of our facilities that will allow the “gift of recreation” to be given year round. If you have not “liked” our Facebook page, please do! It is an easy way to stay in the loop of all special events and cool programming.
Hollice Clark
Secretary & Executive Director
We are currently working on upgrading the Willowhaven Interpretative Center property at Whispering Willows Park as we have just completed the master plan. We will be seeking an OSLAD grant (Open Spaces Land Acquisition Development) through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to help us fund the first phase of the project. We plan to add a nature play area, an amphitheater, upgrade the nature center, add a large pavilion, pave the walking trails, and add a 4 acre dog park. These improvements will help our residents enjoy the nature haven we have created just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of our small city. We like to think of it as a peaceful oasis in our town. Exploration Station will be shut down from August 25th to September 16th for the annual cleaning and upgrading to the facility. This year we are excited to announce the new exhibit Up, Up & Away that will be installed during this time. It is being made possible partially by a grant from the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley. This new exhibit will introduce air and wind energy to children in an engaging way that encourages exploration and discovery. As they experiment, children will develop knowledge about the power of moving air and pneumatics and gain critical pre-dispositions about the importance and power of air in their world. This educates our future generation about the importance of wind energy as wind turbines help power our cities and clean air enables us to live and grow. Make plans to bring the family to this exciting new exhibit. Look for exciting additions to our 2nd annual Scarecrow Contest this year! The community loved the scarecrows on the fence last year as it seemed to bring everyone together in the heart of our city here at Perry Farm. We will continue the contest with celebrity judges and we have added a people’s choice category. On Saturday morning, September 27th, we will host a Scarecrow Festival that includes people’s choice voting. Everyone will have the opportunity to vote for their personal favorite for $1.00. October is breast cancer awareness month so all proceeds will go to AGAPE - to help support the Breast Cancer Research at the Breast Center at Presence St. Mary’s. They are our headline sponsor this year. We have a fun morning planned with scarecrows, breakfast and some local music. Mark your calendars now! Also in the fall is the return of our ever popular event “A Night in Sleepy Hollow.” We will continue our 4 - year partnership with Acting Out Theatre Co. as they bring the Legend of Sleepy Hollow to life with their talented actors in the 1832 barn. You will be transported back in time beginning with campfire storytellers and ending with a hayride in the Hollow to encounter the Headless Horseman at the fateful bridge. We are also expanding the wildly successful Sleepy Hollow Haunted Trail. The Village will again be filled with roaming monsters, games and activities. Also, coming up in late fall and early winter is our 4th Annual Turkey Trot and our 2nd Annual Frosty Express. There is not a better time to be part of this community. We take our mission very seriously of enriching the quality of life for our residents. My door is always open for suggestions or concerns. Please email me at Hollice@btpd.org or call me at 815 - 933 9905. Come join us this fall in the great outdoors! Hollice Clark Executive Director
