Halotherapy
WRITTEN BY: RENEE MASSE
The word halos derives from the Greek word for “salt.” This natural therapy has emerged as a powerful way to receive incredible health benefits by simply existing in an atmosphere that is delivering a high concentration of negative ions in the air. It’s very similar to spending time by the ocean or a day at the beach. That rejuvenating feeling that includes relaxation and a clearer mind is not simply from the sounds of waves and warm sunshine. The truth about halotherapy is that the salt is emitting negative ions into the environment that neutralize free radicals, promote healthy sleep patterns, purify the blood, and revitalize cell metabolism. It’s important to know treatment is more effective with dry salt air, such as a salt cave or sauna versus using moist salt air.
Breathe Better Originating from the use of ancient healers, salt caves have been used for centuries as a therapy to aid with several different types of health conditions, including overall health and mood, as well as detoxification of the lymphatic, respiratory, and nervous system. This combination greatly supports a healthy immune system and can stave off infection during cold and flu season. It is recognized that the negative ions found in halotherapy can help to relieve symptoms associated
with respiratory ailments, including COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), allergies, chronic bronchitis, asthma, and sinus congestion. Many salts used in halotherapy include up to 84 elements, as well as beneficial trace minerals that have a very different effect than that of basic sodium chloride, or table salt. Table salt can also be considered a disinfectant due to its antimicrobial benefits, however it is very drying and dehydrating and should not be considered in the same realm as halotherapy. Revitalize Yourself The additional benefits to halotherapy are reducing stress and increasing energy, as well as improving certain skin conditions, such as psoriasis, acne, eczema, and rashes. The moisturizing qualities and properties of these pure mineral salts attract moisture to the skin helping with detoxification and cell function. Most sessions only require 30-45 minutes and is considered equivalent to spending three days by the sea! Halotherpy is coming soon to Essentials MediSpa and Salon or you can take the benefits home with therapeutic Himalayan salt lamps that can be found in the Essentials MediSpa and Salon boutique. Recipe:
Honey-Wheat Pizza with Goat Cheese & Fig Salad
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup warm water (100° to 110°) 1 tablespoon honey 3 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast 9 oz. all-purpose flour (approx. 2 cups) 2.38 oz. wheat flour (approx. 1/2 cup) 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt Cooking spray 1 1/2 cups crumbled goat cheese 1 tablespoon cornmeal, divided 4 cups fresh mâche or baby spinach 2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 2 ripe figs thinly sliced Aged Balsamic (Optional : 3 ounces very thinly sliced prosciutto, chopped)
STEP 1
Combine 1 cup warm water, honey, and 1 teaspoon oil in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Stir in yeast; let stand 10 minutes. Weigh or lightly spoon flours into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flours and salt in a food processor, and pulse 2 times or until blended. Add yeast mixture, pulsing to combine (dough will feel sticky). Turn dough out onto a floured surface; knead lightly 3 to 4 times. STEP 2
Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray, turning to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place (85°), free from drafts, 1 hour or until doubled in size. (Gently press two fingers into dough. If the indentation remains, dough has risen enough.) Punch dough down; cover and let rest 10 minutes. STEP 3
Preheat oven to 450°. STEP 4
Place a baking sheet in oven. Roll dough into a 14-inch circle on a floured surface. Brush dough evenly with 1 tablespoon oil, and sprinkle evenly with cheese. Place dough on a baking sheet sprinkled with 1 tablespoon cornmeal. Transfer dough carefully to preheated pan; bake at 450° for 12 minutes or until crust is crisp and golden. Combine remaining 2 teaspoons oil, mâche, and the remaining ingredients; toss to combine. Arrange salad over crust and drizzle with aged balsamic. RECIPE BY: ANN TAYLOR PITTMAN
Do’s & Don’ts of Nail care Take a close look at your fingernails. Are they strong and healthy looking? Or do you see ridges, dents, or areas of unusual color or shape? Many less than desirable nail conditions can be avoided through proper nail care. PHOTOS FEATURING NEW OPI PERU COLLECTION
WHAT’S NORMAL, WHAT’S NOT? Your fingernails — composed of laminated layers of a protein called keratin — grow from the area at the base of the nail under your cuticle. Healthy fingernails are smooth, without pits or grooves. They’re uniform in color and consistency and free of spots or discoloration. Sometimes fingernails develop harmless vertical ridges that run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Vertical ridges tend to become more prominent with age. Fingernails can also develop white lines or spots due to injury, but these eventually grow out with the nail. Not all nail conditions are normal, however. Consult your doctor or dermatologist if you notice: Changes in nail color, such as discoloration of the entire nail or a dark streak under the nail Changes in nail shape, such as curled nails Thinning or thickening of the nails Separation of the nail from the surrounding skin Bleeding around the nails Swelling or pain around the nails Failure of nails to grow out
NAIL CARE: DO’S Keep fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria from growing under your fingernails. Repeated or prolonged contact with water can contribute to split fingernails. Practice good nail hygiene. Regular manicures and pedicures ensure nails are trimmed properly. Use moisturizer. When you use hand lotion, rub the lotion into your fingernails and cuticles, too. Nail polish provides a protective layer. FINGERNAIL CARE: DON’TS Bite your fingernails or pick at your cuticles. These habits can damage the nail bed. Even a minor cut alongside your fingernail can allow bacteria or fungi to enter and cause an infection. Pull off hangnails. You might rip live tissue along with the hangnail. Instead, carefully clip off hangnails. Use harsh nail care products. Limit your use of nail polish remover. When using nail polish remover, opt for an acetone-free formula. It’s easy to neglect your nails — but taking some basic steps can keep your fingernails healthy and strong. INFORMATION FROM THE MAYO CLINIC

THE SIGNS OF AGING? WE’RE HERE TO HELP.
When it comes to anti-aging, there are plenty of “how-to” guides, beauty products, foods, magazine editors and even exercises claiming they have the secret to looking younger than your chronological age. Micro-Needling
Micro-needling is a safe skin rejuvenation procedure which uses a DermapenŽ to create hundreds of microscopic channels in the skin which then stimulates the body’s production of collagen and elastin. At Essentials MediSpa & Salon, our practitioner will prep your skin with a topical anesthetic to ensure a relatively painless experience.
The Dermapen® will be applied to your skin to stimulate your body’s immune system and increase blood flow. After the procedure, we apply a serum to help boost skin health with noticeable results within 24 hours. Incorporating this process into your skincare routine several times each year can make significant, lasting improvements in your skin’s overall health and look. Aging? Who’s aging now? Not you.
