HAPPY WINTER TO ALL OF YOU!! As I sit here and reminisce about winter and memories of growing up with wishes of a snow day at school - just so we could all stay home and “do nothing”. We would play outside for hours before being called inside with wet clothes and boots only to be surprised by a warm cup of hot chocolate (and normally a piece of peanut butter toast for dipping) that my mom had made while I was out having fun…. Later in life I did the exact same thing watching my kids while growing up in Germany building a snowman and warming the pot of hot chocolate. Traditions were started, and continued for years throughout life (what I would give for a snow day these days – just to steal the precious time that seems to slip away). My favorite saying “Baby it’s cold outside” maybe has changed living in Florida to “Baby it’s warm outside” - the memories still remain and as I close my eyes on a “cold winter’s night” my dreams are filled with warm cozy days with nothing but my family, friends and my sweet angel (yellow lab) “Emily” (RIP) gathered together at home. We will all eat too much, stay up too late, do the things that we tell ourselves all year “are not good for us,” but at times like this I often wonder if these ARE the things that are good for us! I ask you all to create memories this year and travel that extra mile to see an old friend or family member that you belly laugh with or just love being around. We all know that life is too short- it’s a blink of an eye. Your Essential’s Family wants to thank you for being a part of their lives and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Winter! Stress, the annoying five letter word that plagues millions of Americans. More and more of us are facing health problems that are directly caused or worsened by stress. It can lead to headaches, sleeplessness, high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety, and other serious medical issues. The severity of it has been desensitized by the mass production of stress therapy products that we see on the market. Today you can purchase everything from stress relieving candles, lotions, pills, teas, fidget spinners, adult coloring books and everything in between. While these items may smell nice or be fun to play with they are actually doing little to help manage your stress. The key to a stress-free life is to stop it from forming in the first place. There are healthy, natural methods to not only alleviate your stress levels but to focus on the issues that are causing them in the first place, so it can be avoided in
the future. Life is crazy and taxing, sometimes things happen that you can’t prepare for. It is impossible to eliminate all stress but you have to focus on the areas you can control. If you let small things give you anxiety they will snowball until they become one big problem, potentially causing a breakdown. Below are natural ways you can use your body and mind to become your own natural stress reliever. EXERCISE AND DIET Let’s face it when we have a stressful day most of us head straight for the freezer and grab the Ben and Jerry’s. Food might make you feel better initially but how do you feel after you eat? Emotional eating is a popular coping mechanism that many of us reach for immediately but it is terrible not only for your figure but your mind. A healthy eating routine coupled with exercise is a natural way to help lessen your stress. Sometimes when we are
down it’s hard to muster enough energy to put in a good workout, however, any physical activity will help you with stress. Studies show that it reduces fatigue, reinforces one’s ability to focus, and enhances overall cognitive function. Already a gym rat? Change up your workout or start a new program. Sometimes an overall wellness program with a structured meal, workout and supplement plans can make over your body not just physically but emotionally as well. C O M M U N I C AT E Communication is a great stress reducer. Voicing out your concerns can stop the buildup of negative and stressful thoughts. When something is on your mind, talk it out. Speak to a friend, co-worker, family member, therapist or even the girl in the checkout line. Communicating at least some of your emotions is a big help. Not a big talker? Write. You don’t have to be 13 to have a diary, record your daily thoughts in a journal or blog. When a situation arises that upsets you; think about what happened, what you did and how you felt. This way when future situations arise you can read what you wrote and face it with a sense of calm. B R E AT H E When something presents itself to be a possibly stressful situation, focus on your breathing or try counting. Take deep breaths or count up and down slowly, pausing and emphasizing on each breath or number. Remember being told to count sheep when you were a kid to help you fall asleep? Well, there was a reason to your parent’s madness. Counting slowly helps calm your thoughts down and helps your mind focus on what is jumping over the fence not what is bothering you. Deep, slow breathing helps relieve your body physically and mentally for the same reason.
MASSAGE THERAPY We all know that nothing feels better than a nice massage but it is doing more than just removing the knots from your back. Massages can release tensions and promote relaxation. Routine massage therapy can help stop the stress from building up in the first place. Makes about 2 cups
When fresh tomatoes are out of season, this should be your go-to bruschetta recipe. By gently oven-roasting canned tomatoes, you end up with a deeply flavored, and delicious topping. You will not miss the fresh tomatoes— we promise. 1

Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Working over a bowl, using your fingers, tear each tomato in half and press out and discard the seeds. Arrange tomatoes on prepared baking sheet in one layer, season with salt, and drizzle all over with olive oil. Transfer to oven and cook until excess juices have evaporated and tomatoes look slightly dry on the exterior but still moist within, about 1 hour. Transfer oven-roasted tomatoes to a work surface and chop finely. Transfer to a large mixing bowl. Add 1/4 cup olive oil and basil and stir well. Season with salt and add red wine vinegar, about 1 teaspoon at a time, until tomatoes are very lightly tart. Stir in a pinch of sugar to help pump up tomatoes' natural sweetness even more; add more sugar sparingly to taste, if desired. Rub top sides of toasts all over with garlic (rub more on for a stronger flavor, or less for a gentler one). Drizzle toasts with olive oil and season lightly with salt. Spoon tomatoes on top and serve.

It’s incredibly easy to make at home and requires just a few simple ingredients. You’ll also find it to be more economical than what you buy at the store, especially if you really love tapenade. Tapenade is a very versatile condiment. While it is the signature ingredient for muffaletta and a favorite on panini, there are many more ways that to enjoy it. It’s a popular spread for crackers, pita chips, and crispy bread. You can even enjoy it on your avocado toast or a bagel and enjoy a light breakfast or brunch. Combine Kalamata olives, capers, lemon juice, olive oil, anchovy paste, and pepper. Mix well. Refrigerate and use within two weeks.

Enjoy a Holiday Mojito This is an authentic recipe for mojitos with a holiday kick. It’s a very refreshing drink for Florida winters. Be careful when drinking it, if you make a pitcher you might be tempted to drink the whole thing yourself. Place mint leaves and 1 lime wedge into a sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush the mint and lime to release the mint oils and lime juice. Add 2 more lime wedges and the sugar, crushed candy cane, and muddle again to release the lime juice. Do not strain the mixture. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice. Pour the rum over the ice, and fill the glass with carbonated water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar if desired. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge.
