WEEK 9 READING:PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) It was important to Durer that: - The perpendiculars and orthogonals in a perspectival projection meet at the appropriate vanishing point (to be determined by the perpendicular projection drawn from the eye to the picture plane). - Any parallel lines all have the same vanishing point, regardless of the direction they lie in. • Horizontal projections have vanishing points that lie on the horizontal line through the central vanishing point • For lines that are on a 45-degree angle with the picture plane, the distance between their vanishing point and the central one should be equal to the distance between the picture plane and the eye

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogeneous space refers to a more mathematical sense of area, whereby in a geometrical plane it must be possible to draw similar figures in all directions and of all magnitudes from every point in the given space. This space is not known to be a ‘given space’, rather it is produced through the means of construction – it is more of a functional reality than a substantial one. The points joined in the space are representations of their position, which outside of the image have little independence.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS

Isometric old quad with its storytelling notations, based on the story of Clarice.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1: I chose this view to demonstrate a survivor (as told in the story) peering out from behind a pillar to see the remains of their city.

Perspective 2: I chose this much more open view to demonstrate the change in the city with the new people flocking in, however you can still see a small portion of the first perspective, hinting that although it is still there, it is mostly forgotten.

6

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective 1 (with charatcers): The first scene of my story, whereby the survivors emerge and begin cleaning up the mess of their ruined city.

Perspective 2 (with characters): The second scene, in which there are new people and materials, and hence Clarice looks much more clean, however still feels a bit cold as it has lost its character.

WEEK 4 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) The major difference between autographic and allographic practices is that the autographic style tends to be used in the more artistic forms, such as painting and sculpting. Nelson Goodman links this back to authenticity, which he believes in these artistic styles comes from the author’s direct contact with their work. On the other hand, the allographic style gets its authenticity through the ability to reproduce the works without the direct influence of the author (like we see in plays, music and poems).

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) In general terms, architects are in need of new representation styles because the cities and the world we are living in are getting more complex, so we need more complexity in our representations and reproductions of it. Just like with anything, as things change, people and professions are expected to change also.
