Nida-Core Corp. enjoys great success with its new core designed for RTM, infusion and other closed or vacuum assisted processes. Composed of a layer of PU, Phenolic or flexible polyethylene/polypropylene foam covered with a reinforcing fibre layer on each side, the three elements are linked together by glass fibre bridging strands which go through them obliquely, forming triangulations in the mechanical sense. The reinforcing materials are woven or non-woven glass, carbon or aramide fibre fabrics, or additional reinforcements which are available in the marketplace.

Mirage Manufacturing: The road less traveled The story of Mirage Manufacturing is really the story of its founder, Ken Fickett. Ken began his boat-building career as a boy working afternoons in one of the last wooden boat shops on the Miami River. Sweeping up, caring for tools and acting as a gofer, he learned boat building from one of the best. Forty years later he’s still at it! Having started his own boat building company, Mirage Manufacturing of Gainesville, Florida. He’s built some of the most competitive MORC racing sailboats, high performance airplanes, a line of fast, offshore sportfishing boats and now, a line of unique trawlers, the Great Harbour series, the GH37, GH47 and the Great Harbour N37. Nowadays, Ken also writes about boat-building, technical issues and marine trends, and he was recently named technical editor of National Boat Digest. Mirage Manufacturing’s entrance into the trawler market was noteworthy because of what it did not do as much as for what it did do. Mirage did not try to build another Grand Banks or another Nordhavn. It’s a small company employing 40 workers in a landlocked city; it’s not a well-oiled marketing machine farming actual construction to the Far East. Mirage had to come out with a product that was identifiably different and distinctively superior in order to survive, let alone compete successfully.

Our Customers

Ken Fickett, with his background in cutting-edge composite construction, teamed up with one of the most prolific naval architects, Lou Codega, to arrive at the Great Harbour’s beamy, hard-chined hull design. Although it should seem obvious, no other builder has gone that in far in adapting contemporary workboat design in a “trawler” yacht. Besides providing form stability, this hull shape has made ballast unnecessary. Here’s where Nida Core comes in. Because they are without ballast and use of Nida Core coring generously from the rubrail up, Great Harbour trawlers are unsinkable. Mirage Manufacturing is the only trawler manufacturer that makes that promise. Although they do not hold to a traditional esthetic, Mirage’s trawlers are remarkably handy, particularly its N37. This is a boat with 3-foot draft that has nevertheless distinguished itself in ocean passages to Mexico and Hawaii. With so many differences between Mirage and its competition, it should be no surprise that it has a lot of explaining to do. You’ll find it all on their website—their philosophy of design and construction and sea stories about our voyages. Go to www.mirage-mfg.com.
