FACULTY

The International School Nido de Aguilas offers an English language based liberal arts education, influenced by U.S. and Chilean thought and tradition, that prepares students to be eloquent communicators and impactful stewards of a rapidly changing world. Nido students: • Engage in authentic, consequential experiences, learn by doing, and are accustomed to taking risks. • Master a rich curriculum while acquiring the skills to communicate across multiple fields, disciplines, and cultures. • Build their own personalities fully, nurturing their strengths and passions.

• Nido de Aguilas limits the number of applications to a maximum of 10 schools and strongly encourages students to limit the number of countries that a student applies to 4 or fewer countries. Nido de Aguilas students should be considered serious applicants. • Nido de Aguilas students are required to sign and adhere to the school’s early decision policy which states that if a student applies early, and is accepted to that school, the student will enroll and withdraw all other active applications. • Teachers and counselors have close working relationships with seniors through seminar-style discussion courses, extracurricular activities and other mentorship opportunities. It is our intention to provide specific and in-depth letters of recommendations that best represent our students’ abilities, level of engagement and interest in being challenged as well as other intangible qualities like curiosity and creativity. It is our policy to not fill in the Ratings/Rankings, and all recommendations are confidential.

SCHOOL CALENDAR, ACADEMIC SCHEDULE AND ASSESSMENT

Nido de Aguilas follows the US academic calendar starting the year in July and ending in June. The academic year is divided into two semesters, each with a comprehensive assessment period. Core courses are year-long and the Social Studies, PE, Technology and Fine Arts Departments offer semester long electives. Due to the southern hemisphere vacation schedule, Nido students receive less than the 240 IBO recommended instructional hours for HL classes over a 2-year period. International Baccalaureate SL courses meet for a minimum of 150 hours over a 2-year period. Students have an eight-week summer vacation (December - February) prior to IB exams which are administered each year in May. Only final semester grades are reported on transcripts.

SOCIAL UNREST & COVID-19 PANDEMIC

UNPRECEDENTED CHALLENGES AND COVID CONSIDERATIONS The 2019-2020 School Year held many unexpected challenges for Chile and the world. October 2019 A fare increase in the Santiago Metro sparked a series of protests that rapidly transformed into the worst civil unrest Chile has experienced in decades. The government announced a state of emergency and imposed a curfew for Santiago and many other regions in Chile. Between October 21-25, Nido de Aguilas closed campus in order to protect the safety of students, faculty and staff as the civil unrest intensified. Most school sponsored co-curricular activities, including athletics, were suspended indefinitely in order to close campus in the early afternoon to allow students, faculty and staff to arrive home safely as the location and timing of violent demonstrations and the government responses to it varied each day. November 2019 Due to the continued civil unrest throughout Chile, Nido postponed the annual Week-Without-Walls program. Though the School was able to resume some campus based co-curricular activities, there were several modifications to the schedule and interruptions that persisted for the remainder of the semester. December 2019 Civil unrest forced the PSU selection test (Prueba de Selecciรณn Universitaria), a university selection test required for all students applying to university in Chile, to be canceled. Nido de Aguilas observed its normal summer break period between December 19, 2019 - February 17, 2020. March 2020 The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Chile. The Chilean government announced numerous measures to control the spread of the virus including a national curfew, state of emergency, the closure of schools throughout Chile and the closure of its borders to foreigners. Having prepared a distance learning program due to the civil unrest of the previous semester, Nido was able to start with online classes on March 16. The Chilean government issued a mandatory 24-hour/7days a week quarantine for many regions around the country including Lo Barnechea, the comuna where Nido de Aguilas is located. May 2020 Mandatory 24-hour/7days a week quarantine remained in effect. Nido administered the modified IB Exam session for students pursuing course certificates or the full diploma. June 2020 Mandatory 24-hour/7days a week quarantine remained in effect. Nido de Aguilas observed its normal winter break period between June 19, 2020 - July 29, 2020. July 2020 Mandatory 24-hour/7days a week quarantine remained in effect until July 28 (124 total days) when Lo Barnechea entered a mandatory 24-hour quarantine only on weekends. Nido de Aguilas opened the 2020-2021 school year offering a comprehensive full-time distance learning program for grades Prek - 12. August - September 2020 Mandatory 24-hour quarantine on weekends remained in effect until September 28, 2020 (62 days). Nido continued to offer a comprehensive full-time distance learning program. October 2020 Nido continues to offer a comprehensive full-time distance learning program. Lo Barnechea entered Step 3 in the national Paso a Paso reopening plan. Nido de Aguilas has submitted a comprehensive reopening plan to the Regional Secretariat of Education and Secretariat of Health of the Metropolitan Region for authorization. Authorization is still pending, therefore, no firm date has been established for reopening our campus for in-person classes. SAT AND ACT TEST CANCELLATIONS International School Nido de Aguilas is the only official test center in Chile that offers the SAT, SAT Subject Tests and the computer Based ACT. Due to the timing Southern Hemisphere vacation calendar (late December - late February) and the strict national quarantine and school closures that began in March 2020 due to the global pandemic, NO STANDARDIZED TESTS have been offered at Nido de Aguilas (or anywhere else in Chile) in the calendar year between January and October 2020. November and December 2020 test dates may be honored once the Regional Secretariat of Education and Secretariat of Health of the Metropolitan Region authorize Nido's comprehensive reopening plan. DISRUPTION OF SCHOOL-BASED ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES Between October 2019 and October 2020, all athletic training and competition, as well as fine and performing arts events, were cancelled due to unsafe conditions associated with civil unrest and/or the global pandemic. Pending authorization from the Regional Secretariat of Education and Secretariat of Health of the Metropolitan Region, campus-based activities may resume at some point in the future, if deemed safe to do so.
