DENSITY + DEPTH The individual’s perception of space is directly influenced by the concentration of distinct boundaries and the subsequent manifestation of unifying connections. Density of interacting boundaries and experienced spatial depth can be derived from visual connections that bridge defined spaces, varying degrees of simultaneous extended spatial inhabitation, and experiential gravitation towards connected future spaces. Connections enhance awareness of fluid space to transition the individual’s perception through the layering of distinct architectural spaces. Visual connections and perceived expansions through partially revealed space enable simultaneous inhabitation of multiple levels of surrounding space, thereby extending the individual’s experience outward. This extension of architectural understanding generates a gravitational pull that affects the individual’s movement through connected spaces. The dense interaction of spaces coupled with the extended depth of experience questions established boundaries and enhances the overall perception of space.

Fluid space is informed through visual connections that span each level of enclosure, blurring the perception of defined spatial boundaries. Removal of rigid limits of space expands these established connections and influences the creation of dynamic interconnected spaces. Interaction among individual spaces composes a single continuous existence in which each scale of spatial distinction is amplified by its shared connections. This symbiotic relationship further binds defined spaces together through parallel connections to form one cohesive understanding of unified space. As a whole, the spatial understanding of the drawing maintains a perceived continuous flow of space, even though certain defined spaces exhibit stronger connections. Those connected spaces share the same gravitational pull, and therefore, necessitate the same perspective focal point. By altering the gravitational point, the structure of spaces can either transition effortlessly or shift rapidly based on connections formed between spaces. The range of spatial transitions serve to either contrast distinctive spaces or balance connected spaces.

how does dissolving the
edge of mass extend the limits of a contained space?
In the series of spatial models, the strong contrast in light and shadows effectively removes the definition of spatial edges, thereby extending the limits of space. By placing the aperture along the joint, direct light dissolves boundaries of space and connects the exterior. Within each spatial moment, either light or opposing shadows reflects across a surface to generate a gradual range of intensities that results in a gradual softening of formal edges.

Diminishing physical edges enables the fluid understanding of spatial dwelling and challenges experienced boundaries of defined space. The abated impact of the form edge can be achieved through physical removal of joint connection, introduction of spatial aperture, and heightened presence of contrast. The engagement of light along the boundary of defined space generates a duality of experiential conditions that distinguishes the individual spaces through amplified contrast, while effectively dissolving the shared edge through the gradual transition between dark and light.

CONNECTION CONNECTION BETWEEN BETWEEN SPACES SPACES
In concert with the receded form edge, the arrangement of offset panels creates spatial boundaries that constantly develop in definition. Shifting spatial boundaries generate opportunities to adjoin spaces and to layer influences in order to construct dynamic experiences. The gradual establishment of visual connections produces a hierarchy of transitional spaces which seamlessly evolve the individual’s understanding of the overall architecture. These intermediate spaces exhibit multiple spatial influences that serve to transform the perception of space and layer interconnected experiences as the individual independently progresses the sequence of spaces.

Shifting defined spatial boundaries produces moments of transition that balance qualities from layering both spaces. In the transitional moment of the staircase, the beginning space is dark and confined, but visually connected to the lower light well. In this way, the individual experiences one quality of the space while dwelling in the contrasting quality. Once the individual progresses to the bottom of the staircase, the experience is open and visually extended while perceptively heightened in comparison to the space prior to descending.

While the understanding of each space is dependent upon these collective stimuli, the impact that the individual panel maintains is directly correlated to the strength of the visual or implied connection between the element and the overall space. By allowing physical form to redefine the perceived limits of space, the former rigid distinction between exterior and interior unite into one continuous spatial understanding. Both exterior and interior spaces extend outward, overlapping along the boundary of architecture to heighten the experience of that threshold. Inside this transitional space, the individual dwells simultaneously within boundless exterior and enclosed interior. This connection, formed through a shared visual continuity, binds the exterior and interior as one holistic perception of space.

Visual connections formed between spaces generate an expansion of spatial boundaries. This extended space creates opportunities for multiple levels of inhabited space and can be stimulated, not only from the physical view between adjoined spaces, but also from the implication of continued space. The identification of implied space emanates from the introduction of either an altered directionality of light or an awareness of shared, intermediary space. Through the shifting directionality of light, the contained space expands to encompass a continuation of implied space. The intense contrast formed in the gap between wall panels removes the physical edges of space and extends the spatial boundary to infinite limits. Perceived expansion of spatial experiences derives from either a horizontal continuous connection of space or a vertical elongation of boundaries. Horizontal continuity is established through the fluid nature of space and the visual associations that link a spatial sequence. Vertical extension is formed through connected spaces that maintain a shared directionality of light. Layering these spatial expansions creates continuity of space that encourages movement and orients the individual within a consistent spatial understanding.
With the introduction of the expanded section, the horizontal and vertical extensions create a richer understanding of spatial boundaries. The defined limit of occupied space is maintained with the distinction of the separate ground plane, but the boundary of experienced space reaches infinite levels, transitioning between multiple levels of perceived inhabitation.

what architectural conditions allow for dwelling in
extended spaces?
Openings between spaces create an opportunity to experientially inhabit beyond the physically occupied space. By experiencing future occupied spaces, the individual will first generate an impression and then a later recognition, prior to physically engaging with the space. These linked spaces will maintain some degree of shared inhabitation as long as a visual connection spans them. For the individual, the initial glimpse to experience future perceived space continues questioning until the eventual arrival of that future space; the connection is further secured as the view is returned back to the past experienced space.
are there limits?
In the above section, the architecture explores the sequential experience of space thereby enhancing the perceived extension into the future remote spaces. Experiencing future space allows the overall understanding of the architecture to overlay upon itself, creating a fluid composition of experiences rather than a linear sequence of spaces. The interwoven spatial boundaries, exhibited in the spatial model on the opposite page, assist in informing the purposeful arrangement of architectural spaces and the resulting dwelling experience.

Visual connections that bridge between spaces generate a subsequent extension of spatial experience. By metaphysically dwelling in the future architectural space, the individual is drawn to further understand the entire experience of that space and creates a physical desire for movement. The gravitational pull acting upon a given space results from the directionality of the continued space. While the horizontal gravitational pull originates from a shared visual connection of architectural spaces, the oppositional vertical gravitational pull stems from a perception of infinite and boundless space. Horizontal gravitation dictates that the direction of movement is directly correlated with the applied pull of architectural space. In contrast, vertical gravitation does not allow for physical movement to enhance the experience of dwelled space, but rather generates an upward momentum which results in a moment of perceived pause where the individual exists within the spatial extension.

The compositional experience of space relies on the layering of horizontal continuity and vertical extension and the subsequent generated moments of physical movement and perceived pause. The interaction and transition between opposing gravitational pulls of space create a dynamic and complex understanding that governs the individual’s perception of spatial boundaries. The experienced architectural tempo receives order through the relationship the individual maintains with the extended dwelling space. The space initially focuses on the horizontal views forward, indicating the opportunities for architectural progression. In the distant space, the light filtering from above implies a strong exterior connection and a resulting vertical elongation. These sequences correspond with the architectural motivations. The horizontal movement pulls the individual up the staircase and then the moment of pause creates an environment for the individual to rest and reflect upon the experienced architecture.

how can
dense architectural interactions and
inhabited spatial depths challenge the perception of defined space?
An individual’s awareness of spatial conditions can be heightened through density of influencing spaces and depth of unifying experiences. Connections, established between adjoining spaces, influence the overall perception of fluid space to enable the dual existence of space as a distinct spatial entity and as a part of the continuous architecture. Diminishing the physical edge engages the perceived continuity of spatial boundaries and creates an experienced layering of architectural space. This range of extended spatial inhabitation retains the influence of the occupied space while expanding, at varying degrees, to encompass distant, partially revealed spaces. Dwelling within those expanded compositions of space manifests from established spatial connections and results in a generated gravitational pull to further occupy that experiential glimpse of space. These gravitational forces influence the engagement of surrounding space and direct movement through the progression of architecture. The fundamental architectural conditions of density and depth influence the perception of space through forming connections with adjoining spaces, dwelling within levels of extended space, and generating gravitational pulls to future space.
Throughout my architectural education, there have been many friends, colleagues, and family that have supported me in my decisions, encouraged me in times of panic, and pushed me to achieve great heights. During this journey of creative discovery, there was one crucial influence that, while lacking the aptitude for design, enjoyed the imaginative dialogue and continually engaged my own creative process. This extraordinary person who instilled in me his curiosity and passion passed away during my thesis year. For all of those considered questions contained in my thesis, I am sure that my dad would have been there to offer unexplored avenues. As a testament to my creative achievements, I know that my dad would have been proud of this culminating thesis work and the continued curiosity that motivates me to design.
