Executive Director

Message from the Executive Director This year marks the 35-year milestone of Beckstrand Cancer Foundation; and despite being confronted head-on with a trying economy, we’ve reason to celebrate. Our gala is representative of the significant and positive impact the Foundation, our staff, volunteers and donors have made on the needs of cancer patients young and old within our community – from providing direct financial assistance and patient advocacy, to participating in hospital visits, to imparting on disadvantaged families the magic of the holiday season, and so much more. Beyond that, it’s also a celebration of our optimism for what lies ahead in 2010. Tonight, we invite you to join us in our Wonderland by unlocking your imagination and experiencing its whimsy, hope and promise…

Welcome to The Diamond & Pearl Ball 2009! Tonight, we come together to honor the distinguished contributions of Dr. Robert Dillman, Medical Director of Hoag Cancer Center, who has worked tirelessly to improve the five-year relative survival rate of patients with invasive cancer. We are also here to share the impact that Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is making in the lives of local cancer patients. Despite an economy that has only served to augment patients’ financial burden, the Foundation has responded to a doubled case load by providing $40,000 to $45,000 in financial assistance each month! And while the economy is suffering, we remain confident in our continued ability to make a difference. Thank you for joining us for the sixth annual Diamond & Pearl Ball. I hope you will take a moment to read through this program and gain a broader perspective of all we’ve accomplished in recent months and of our goals for the future. Once you do, my hope is you will realize that The Diamond & Pearl Ball is so much more than an annual fundraiser; it is a celebration of what we can accomplish for a community in need when we all work together. Throughout the pages that follow, you’ll see images of butterflies reminiscent of the Foundation’s logo, which was inspired by an idea known as “The Butterfly Effect.” This is actually a large-scale phenomena resulting from a chain of events set off by the smallest change – like the flap of a butterfly’s wings. Like “The Butterfly Effect,” the Beckstrand butterfly symbolizes our belief that one person taking the tiniest of steps can actually make a vey big difference. We’re proud to recognize seven very special women tonight who have acted as butterflies for us; and because of their loyal support, the Foundation has been able to substantially impact the cancer community. We’ve seen how one person can make a big difference – and now we invite you to imagine what can happen when hundreds of “butterflies” unite. Find out tonight at The Diamond & Pearl Ball.... an Evening in Wonderland.

Beckstrand Cancer Foundation In addition to the physical pain suffered by those afflicted with cancer, often comes an unsurpassed emotional pain associated with the diagnosis. Fear, anxiety and uncertainty regarding what the future holds can suddenly complicate normal work routines and family obligations. For most, questions arise about basic day-to-day living needs, such as: <> Who will pay the bills while I am away from work seeking treatment or recuperation? <> How will I keep the refrigerator full? <> How do I take the time necessary to care for my diagnosed child and still make ends meet? <> Without a steady paycheck, how will I cover insurance payments and chemotherapy treatments?

Resources for needs such as rent, utilities, health insurance, food, transportation and medical copayments can quickly become a major challenge in the cancer patient’s fight for survival. That’s why offering solutions to the seemingly ordinary needs of everyday life is Beckstrand Cancer Foundation’s mission.

“This financial aid alleviates some of the fear and sense of helplessness that accompany a diagnosis of cancer. Your timely help is much more than financial. It brings me into a circle of caring friends and has taken some of the sting out of the loneliness of this disease.” : : Jacquebeth : :

What We Do While the importance of finding a cure for this devastating disease cannot be understated, as is the focus of the vast majority of cancer-related groups, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation concentrates on an equally important part of the fight that is commonly overlooked: Providing immediate assistance to the patient and his or her family. Beckstrand’s innovative and sensitive programs can help provide resources and the peace of mind necessary to fully benefit from cancer treatment, including: <> Making crucial payments <> Intervening with debtors <> Advocating on the patient’s behalf

“Out of the numerous agencies that I have contacted for help or information, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation was the only one that truly seemed to care and offer help.” . : Michael : .

Our Programs Individual Patient Assistance – Providing a Missing Link Based closely on the original model established by Dr. Grant Beckstrand, the Individual Patient Assistance (IPA) program is a flexible and adaptable solution for cancer patients in need – designed specifically to avoid unnecessary hardship by filling gaps in conventional social services. Dubbed the “missing link” by the oncology community, the Foundation’s program works to complement the efforts of doctors and nurses who must keep an unwavering focus on treatment. The missing link addresses the frequent upheaval in the lives of their patients. IPA cases are initiated by partners in the healthcare community, including: <> Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles

<> UCLA

<> UCI Medical Center

<> Miller Children’s Hospital

<> Hoag Cancer Center

<> Long Beach Memorial

<> Children’s Hospital of Orange County

<> City of Hope

<> USC Norris Cancer Center

<> St. Joseph Hospital

How It Works Oncologists and social workers match individual patient needs to the IPA program and refer them directly to Beckstrand Cancer Foundation. All prospective patients are then carefully evaluated to determine specific needs and available resources. Following admission, the program develops a transitional care strategy: What will it take to ensure the patient is able to undergo uninterrupted treatment and optimize recovery?

Counseling and community resources are the first services to be offered to the patient, followed by financial help until other interventions can begin. Wherever possible, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation assists the patient with payments to stay in his or her current home – thereby maximizing his or her comfort and well-being, reducing stress, and eliminating an extra level of uncertainty for all members of the family. The IPA program makes certain that health insurance policies remain in full force throughout the duration of treatment, and helps keep automotive, utility, life insurance, medical and other essential payments current.

“I am so grateful to Beckstrand Cancer Foundation for its assistance. Knowing that there is an organization and people that recognize the challenge cancer patients have with everyday life issues raises my hopes for society.” : : North : :

Our Programs BELIEVE : Sharing the Spirit of Christmas When the hardship and tumult of cancer invades a home, the very best family therapy can be a visit from Santa Claus. In the spirit of the holiday, and that of Dr. Beckstrand who had a vision for direct community support, the BELIEVE Program was designed to counteract the ability of cancer to infect and devastatingly unravel every facet of a patient’s family life. The pain, uncertainty, and confusion caused by a parent’s or a child’s cancer can reach new heights during the Christmas season, which carries high expectations for comfort, happiness, and carefree family unity. For many families struggling to pay for therapies or living for the first time without a paycheck, the BELIEVE program reaches out to provide the spirit of Christmas to those living with cancer. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and a team of elves deliver gifts, toys, food, trees, and holiday magic to local families living with cancer whose financial and physical limitations would otherwise deny them the traditional forms of celebration. Families in need are identified through the Beckstrand patient database, partnerships with CHOC, Pacific Shores Medical Group, Newport Cancer Care, SOS, and referrals from across the healthcare and social work communities. Donors specifying BELIEVE as their choice of program may directly assist a single family through an “adopt-a-family” option. Different levels of personal engagement are also available.

“We were overwhelmed when the Beckstrand staff showed up at our home with all the incredible gifts for the children and me. Our family has been through a lot over the past year since Matthew was diagnosed with cancer, and it was wonderful to see Matthew and Megan happy and excited again. You are truly angels on this earth.” : : Claire : :

Our Programs Pediatric Program The mission of Beckstrand Cancer Foundation’s Pediatric Program is to help provide exceptional psychosocial care to children undergoing cancer treatment. The program aims to address the different needs that pediatric cancer patients experience versus adult patients, and offer ways to cope with these needs. Often, treatment for cancer can be stressful for young patients, sometimes leading to behavioral problems and learning disabilities. The Pediatric Program supplies a supportive environment for children to learn appropriate coping skills, enabling them to address relevant issues related to their diagnosis, treatment and possible long-term effects, as well as family-related issues. Through partnerships with distinguished medical programs staffed by dedicated and knowledgeable healthcare professionals, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation grants children and their families much-needed support, guidance and information throughout the course of their treatment and beyond, including: <> Financial assistance <> Crisis intervention <> Behavioral and family support <> Preparation for medical procedures <> Art therapy <> School reintegration

Dealing with a life-threatening illness such as cancer can be an isolating and frightening experience for any child. When young boys and girls are diagnosed, their familiar world is completely disrupted and replaced with a new routine at a children’s hospital. For some, this can produce serious late effects, including memory impairment, learning disorders and socialization problems, which many children do not know how to handle. Beckstrand Cancer Foundation’s Pediatric Program provides the valuable tools necessary to assist children in their treatment and recovery, while effectively addressing their important age-specific needs.

Our Programs Art Therapy Cancer patients are increasingly turning to alternative and complementary therapies to reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and boost their ability to cope with stress. The Beckstrand Art Therapy Program uses art and psychoanalysis to teach children, teens and adults with cancer how to better cope with their diagnosis and prognosis, and to aid in their recovery. Program Director, Dr. Esther DreifussKattan, holds both a PhD in Art Therapy/Psycho-Oncology and in Psychoanalysis, and is a pioneer in art therapy for cancer patients both in the United States and in Europe. Art therapy utilizes the creative, psychotherapeutic process of art-making to ameliorate physical and emotional pain, improve quality of life, and foster psychological growth for persons with cancer. Helps patients and families to cope better with their illness by: <> Fostering hope and psychological well-being through artistic change and peer interaction <> Offering a creative avenue to communicate physical and emotional needs <> Increasing self esteem and reducing pain and symptoms through mastery of art materials

and pictorial expression

<> Exploring complicated, frightening thoughts and feelings related to cancer and its difficult treatments <> Moving from the feeling of isolation to the sense of connection, and from the frustration of

powerlessness to the satisfaction of a sense of control

Board Co-President

Message from the Board Co-Presidents Thank you for attending tonight’s Diamond & Pearl Ball. Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is now in its third decade, and although our mission to improve and enhance quality of life for cancer patients and their families hasn’t changed, it remains as relevant as ever in these difficult economic times. Personally, this mission really resonates with me. As Co-President of the Board of Directors, as a father, and as a longtime resident of Orange County, it means so much to me that an organization like Beckstrand is available to help when a disease as devastating as cancer affects our friends, our family, our neighbors, and our coworkers. This is a disease that does not discriminate, as many of us have experienced firsthand, and I am proud that when Orange County families are burdened with the financial hardship that comes with a cancer diagnosis, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is there to help with day-to-day needs like rent, utilities, food, gas, medical insurance and prescriptions. And you, too, can be proud to support an organization that makes such a difference in the community. Thank you for coming tonight, and for providing help during a time when the need is great.

Jay Hamrick

Welcome to The Diamond & Pearl Ball! This is an important year for us because of the unique situation we’ve found ourselves in as a nation. Although it might sound like stating the obvious to say that in tough economic times the disadvantaged experience an even greater need for assistance, it’s one of the messages that I, personally, want to drive home tonight because it’s especially true for those who are trying to cope with cancer. At the same time, I want to offer hope by saying that Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is the first organization in Orange County to confront this need head on. As Co-President of the Board of Directors, I take a lot of pride in sharing with you this fact: For every dollar donated to the Foundation, 80 cents goes straight to patients in need. Only 20 percent is allocated to administrative and fundraising costs – and currently, we’re writing $40,000 to $45,000 in financial assistance checks every month! And while that number represents the largest amount of outreach by the Foundation to date, there are so many more families in need and so much more we can accomplish with your help. Thank you for attending The Diamond & Pearl Ball 2009 and showing your commitment to continuing this worthwhile mission.

Dr. Robert Dillman ::

Medical Director, Hoag Cancer Center

The Honoree : Robert O. Dillman, M.D., Hoag Cancer Center Twenty years ago, Dr. Robert O. Dillman made the decision to move to Orange County, and since then, he’s made his mark in a big way: Earning a listing in every edition of the Best Doctors in America since 1992, when he also became the first hematologist or oncologist in Orange County, California to be so selected by peers. During that same time, his noteworthy contributions to the medical community were recognized with “Top Doctor,” “Top Physician,” “Best Doctor,” and “Physician of Excellence” honors – and a 2006 “Orange County Physician of the Year” distinction by the Orange County Medical Association. At the same time, Dr. Dillman stepped into the role of Executive Medical and Scientific Director of Hoag Cancer Center in Newport Beach, where his training, experience and board certification in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology was about to enable significant strides in the cancer patient’s fight for survival. In fact, during his tenure:

The five-year relative survival rate for Hoag patients with invasive cancer has improved from 58 percent to 76 percent, and has improved much more rapidly than has occurred nationally. As impressive as this accomplishment is, Dr. Dillman is not one to rest on his laurels. This father of six continues to make progress in the cancer arena, advancing in ways that will serve to improve medical science for his children, their children and beyond. Already, he has authored or co-authored more than 270 scientific articles, reviews, book chapters, and monographs. He has been recognized internationally for his work in lung cancer and cancer biotherapy, and has delivered more than 700 invited lectures throughout the United States and in 10 foreign countries. And tonight, at The Diamond & Pearl Ball 2009, he is honored for his knowledge and dedication to the medical community, the hope he has instilled in the cancer community, and the inspiration he offers to the community-at-large.

Women of Hope :: A Special Thank You Jan Salta, Joni D’Amato, Tami Kahn & Tara Shapiro Beckstrand Cancer Foundation is proud to celebrate four very special women who have each made extraordinary contributions to the local cancer community through their selfless acts of kindness: Jan Salta, Joni D’Amato, Tami Kahn and Tara Shapiro. These “Women of Hope” are longtime supporters who have consistently invested themselves in the mission of the Foundation, and steadfastly sought to raise both awareness and funds on behalf of the patients we serve. Each year, they set an example for the community by serving on the Gala Committee, motivating others to become involved, attending The Diamond & Pearl Ball, holding a position on the Board of Directors and lending support in the form of time, talent, friendship and funding. We are honored to benefit from their commitment and, tonight, express our heartfelt thanks to each of these remarkable Women of Hope.

Laura Cross, Tracy DiGiorgio & Susan Franklin When The Diamond & Pearl Ball was first introduced to Orange County, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation was grateful to receive the support of its inaugural Presenting Sponsor, BVLGARI. The event was a success because of women who were willing to take a chance on the Foundation and were loyal to its mission of improving and enhancing quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Three of these same “Women of Hope” continue to inspire others by wholeheartedly giving of themselves, year in and year out: Laura Cross, Tracy DiGiorgio and Susan Franklin. We are delighted to recognize and thank each of these amazing women for their dedication to helping, their reliable attendance, and generous spirit of giving.

HONOREE

Hall of Fame

Dr. Grant Beckstrand Beckstrand C ancer Foundation H onoree 2003

Dr. Beckstrand is widely remembered as a pioneering oncologist who brought the most advanced understanding and skill in cancer treatment to our area. Beckstrand Cancer Foundation celebrates and continues the contributions he made outside the clinical setting. Dr. Beckstrand recognized the significance and importance of his patients’ non-medical needs, and searched in particular for a solution to the financial burden of cancer and its treatment. Patients and family members, moved by his sense of responsibility to those without means, expressed their appreciation for Dr. Beckstrand’s work by donating money to his special account to help those in need. In 1974, that account became Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, with an expanded mandate and capacity for service to our community.

Andi Collins

(1987 - 2003)

B eckstrand Cancer Foundation H onoree 2006

As an avid volleyball player for Mater Dei High School, Andi Collins’ winning spirit was evident both on and off the court. Known for her courage, optimism and strength, Andi’s friends characterized her as a young woman who lived her life with the same fervor she applied to her role as a CIF-champion volleyball player and team captain. At just 16, Andi touched the lives of thousands and continues to do so long after her unexpected fight with a rare form of breast cancer. Andi recognized the importance of perseverance and dedication, and her athletic attributes carried over into solid friendships and close family ties. Her on-court prowess made her one of the top setting recruits in the nation, and her trademark warmth and laughter instilled a sense of admiration in those around her. For her unquenchable zest for life and love, family and friendship; and for her unmistakable potential, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation pays tribute to athlete, student, friend, sister, daughter and precious gem, Andi Collins. 37

HONOREE

Hall of Fame PRECIOUS GEMS

Tom Riach

(1929 - 2006)

Beckstrand C ancer Foundation H onoree 2007

Never one to shirk from a challenge, Tom Riach was known as a tough competitor, a gifted athlete, and a hard bargaining business man. But more than that, Tom was one of those rare individuals able to successfully juggle the survivalist attributes of provider, business man and teammate, with the warmth and care required of a giving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He led by example, and spent his life helping others to feel as comfortable in their skin as he was in his own. During his fight with esophageal cancer, Tom made the most of his time with family and friends, sharing quiet moments with his wife of 53 years – some of the sweetest of his life. Tom understood the importance of relationships, both personally and professionally. He had a knack for knowing what was important in life, and towards the end what was most important to Tom was spending time with those he held dear. For the inspirational way in which Tom handled his illness, for the lessons in grace, dignity, courage and love which Tom gave to the world, Beckstrand Cancer Foundation pays tribute to Tom Riach – a very precious gem, and a memory that will be treasured forever.

HONOREE

Hall of Fame

Taylor Carol B eckstrand C ancer Foundation H onoree 2008

When Taylor Carol was just 11 years old, a benign baseball injury led doctors to discover he in fact had Philadelphia Chromosome, a chromosomal abnormality that causes the bone marrow to have deadly overgrowth of white blood cells and also causes acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Taylor’s only hope was to quickly find a bone marrow transplant match. Months later, with the support and patient advocacy of Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, Taylor’s amazing recovery began with a transplant from an anonymous donor who saved his life from halfway around the world in Germany. Throughout his emotional journey to recovery, Taylor stayed positive by singing and holding fast to the belief that the adversity of disease can build a person up and make them stronger. At The Diamond & Pearl Ball 2008, 13-year-old Taylor met his bone marrow donor, Ralf Jungbouth, shared his story of survival, and inspired the crowd through song – solidifying his place in the Honoree Hall of Fame. 39
