It’s worth a visit to a sales team environment in any organisation driven by sales. (especially end of the month). They are trying to close deals, looking at who else they can contact to get over the line and sign the dotted line...

The point i am trying to make is, we don’t hustle enough as if we have a boss watching and KPI (key performance indicators) to reach. We take each day as it comes and work as if yes we can do it tomorrow....tomorrow we make the calls, send emails, check LinkedIn and Facebook, have a coffee with a ‘prospect’, shake hands and promise to be in touch and that’s the end of the day. Where is the hustle? Where is the urgency and the drive to close a sale?

Each and everything we do, needs to have a sense of urgency and calm. How do you do that? Well, it’s an art. We all have it in

us....It’s called Being Authentic.

How can you be authentic and still hustle?

Ok, i am not saying try closing every prospect, friend and your neighbours. But it begins with knowing you can truly make a difference to your client. Anyone you meet is an influencer to a prospective client.

How can you pitch yourself without coming across salesy? It starts with your passion to help... Make it clear that you are hustling to help people. Show your passion for what you do. Have clear objectives to why you are meeting a prospect. A coffee chat shouldn’t end with “Yes, lets just keep in touch”. It needs to end with ‘I will put you in touch with so-and-so’ and will email you about what we discussed, so we can help each other’ That’s the very least.

Maintaining a CRM and keeping track of who you meet, documenting the result of the meeting will help you track productivity and also manage the relationships with key people that refer and engage with you.

Ensure you don’t go easy on yourself and make sure you pretend you have a boss who will crack the whip if you don’t meet your KPI / goals for the day/week/month.

Have an accountability partner... who could crack the whip if needed. No one wants to be whipped... well, then again some do.

Point i am making is that you need to hustle... hustle... hustle... bring some urgency into your work and go close some deals!

Are you ready for SuperStream?

If you’re running a business with fewer than 20 employees you need to be SuperStream ready by 28 October 2016 (previously 30 June 2016).

What’s SuperStream?

In a nutshell SuperStream is a new electronic system that all employers must use when making superannuation contributions for their employees.

In the past most employers have had to process employee super contributions to multiple superannuation funds with each fund using a different method for receiving and processing those contributions.

SuperStream changes all of that. All data will now be sent electronically in a standardised format designed to make it simpler for employers to make super contributions.

While it may take some work to get up and running, in the long run SuperStream is set to make life easier for small business owners. Basically, SuperStream will allow employers to use a single channel for making contributions to multiple super funds, drastically cutting down time spent dealing with data issues, fund queries and basic admin (according

to the Australian Small Business Commissioner the average small business spends between 50-100 hours annually on super contribution issues ).

SuperStream will ensure that employee contributions are processed faster and more efficiently, with less room for error and is set to benefit employees too, reliably linking them to their super, reducing the number of lost accounts and unclaimed money.

by EFT or BPAY is not a guarantee of SuperStream compliance.

Even if you’re already paying contributions electronically you may not be sending the fund the correct information about those contributions required under SuperStream.

Top small business tips for EOFY

Here are a few tips to help you get through the period as easily as possible, and hopefully save your business some money and plan for an even better year ahead.

Everyone employed by your business (including you, depending on your business structure) needs to receive a PAYG payment Summary to be able to lodge their personal tax return. You’ll need to reconcile your payroll and provide these payment summaries to your employees by the due date in July, usually the 14th. Before you provide PAYG Payment Summaries, reconcile the totals to your business accounts including the amounts withheld and reported at W2 on your Business Activity Statements. EOFY is also a great time to check your business insurance requirements. If your business circumstances have changed, you may need to update your level of cover.

Get your records organised early

Plan ahead

An important part of being a small business owner is ensuring you are compliant with all business laws, including those about record-keeping. You will need to summarise your income and expenses in a profit and loss statement, list your debtors and creditors, show records of your asset purchases to calculate depreciation expense claims and complete your Business Activity Statements (a bookkeeper or accountant is your best friend here). Consider keeping electronic records, stored in the cloud, to save yourself time and space.

Another part of record-keeping is recording your stock levels. If your business buys or sells stock you’ll have to conduct a stocktake unless your turnover is less than $2m and the change in value is less than $5,000. This is because the value of your stock plays a role in determining your profit or loss for the year. Conducting a stocktake is often a long and laborious task, so plan ahead, communicate with your customers early if your stocktake means you need to change your business hours, and make sure you don’t leave it until the last minute.

Using an electronic inventory system can certainly reduce the effort required at stocktake time.

The end of the financial year can often be a busy time for small business owners. All your business accounting needs to be finalised, tax returns need to be completed and submitted, and planning for the year ahead needs to be done.

It’s not all bad news however, as tax time is the perfect opportunity to reassess where your business is at and where you want it to be.

Understand your employee commitments

Know what you can claim You don’t want your business to miss out on potential tax deductions, so make sure you’re clued up about what you can claim.

The majority of costs you incur whilst running your business can be claimed as a tax deduction as long as they directly relate to earning your income. The 2016 federal budget introduced changes to the small business equity concession, increasing the threshold from $2 million to $10 million in annual turnover. As a result, from 1 July 2016 many more business owners will be eligible for small business concessions such as access to the immediate deduction for assets costing up to $20,000 and the opportunity to account for tax on a cash basis. But for the upcoming end of financial year, the threshold remains at $2m.

Use what you’ve learnt With all the information about your business updated and in one spot, EOFY is a great time to take stock and reflect on the past year. I suggest sitting down with your accountant or bookkeeper to review your finances and discuss what you could change next year to improve.

It’s also a good time to set goals for the new year, and to review your business and marketing plans to ensure they’re still appropriate for the size of your business or the stage it’s at.

Here is a quick tip, you won’t have time to go past page 2 to realise it is still very much a divided argument.

Knowing the metrics (fancier term for numbers) of your sales process and having a sales process that delivers value, nurtures over time and can clearly articulate a solution to the customers pain points is the best approach.

There are those who are happy to sprout that despite the increasing need to have sales considered in a less ‘salesy’ hard core fashion, sales is, was and will always need to be about the numbers, nothing else.

The other camp beats the drum that if your approach is only about the numbers, then you are doomed to fail! Sales should be and are far less about the numbers and more about the approach, the value, the nurture.

Oh, and that statistic at the start? Here it is along with a few other ‘sales numbers’ for you to consider. How does your business compare?

3.) Improve Your Conversion Rate Conversion is often an overlooked area in business. The power of conversion is that you can make large improvements with very little investment. Two really simple things you can do to improve conversion is having a consistent follow-up process to keep leads engaged and implement sales call scripts so your staff interact a certain way with customers.

If you focus on collecting outstanding debts, creating a compelling offer to make to your existing/past clients and implement strategies to improve conversion, you will see a very quick injection of cash in your business.

These two elements determine short term cash flow but what about the longer term? This is where the third element of cash flow comes in. Investing. Investing is more than buying shares or an investment property. Investing is doing things to improve you or your business and is essential to any business. It may be the new piece of equipment that you need, employing an accounts receivable clerk, sales training or even a business improvement course. Some of these things don’t have large obvious cash flow implication but are still considered investing. They all have hidden cash flow implications that require planning to minimize the impact on the business.

Let take a new piece of equipment.

Assume that you are able to secure financing to buy the equipment.

Most people will have factored in the repayments and extra income this investment and financing. The hidden cash flow implications will depend on the

following. Is there GST on the equipment?

Does the financing cover the GST? Timing of the GST refund. Timing of the additional income. Collection times on the additional income. Will the income generated continue after the financing is paid off? What are the additional servicing, insurance, registration costs associated with the equipment? Will additional training and licenses be required? Will there be any cost savings? Is there business down time for the installation?

Can you sell any old equipment?

A lot of these hidden factors have a negative cash flow impact in the very short term. For this reason, investing should be looked at as a separate cash flow element. It is imperative that the planning is done in full to determine if and when the investment is best to be made.

It may be better to miss out on the sales and buy when your cash flow is strongest or the business interruption the least. The money and stress saved on bank overdraft interest and fees, late fees and defaults may more than make up for the higher purchase price. But as always, don’t forget to negotiate. You will often be able to get close to the “sale” price especially if you are buying in the suppliers’ quiet time as they have their own cash flow to worry about.

Receiving an invoice from a worker is not a deciding factor on whether they’re an employee or contractor.

You need to consider the whole working arrangement so that you are clear on your tax and super responsibilities for them.

WorkCover WA Small business owners – did you know you can be fined thousands of dollars for not holding a valid workers’ compensation insurance policy?

There are a number of obligations that small business owners are legally required to meet in relation to workers’ compensation and injury management.

These obligations are designed to reduce the financial impact of a work-related injury on your business, as well as the operational impact of managing an injured worker’s rehabilitation and return to work.

In Western Australia, employers are legally required to have workers’ compensation insurance to cover all of their workers, including contractors and family members who work in the business. Employers are also legally required to: • submit workers’ compensation claim forms to their insurer within five working days of receipt; • make payments to injured workers on their regular pay cycles; and • have a documented injury management system that outlines the steps to be followed if an injury occurs in the workplace.

These are too often hindsight events that we react to. We need to challenge ourselves to take a more proactive stance. Develop a good meeting rhythm in your organization which allows you to use a series of meetings to build upon each other. This enables management to identify patterns that assist them in making quicker and more effective decisions. Moreover, communication in a focused and structured way eliminates inefficiency in the organization and propels you towards achieving your goals.

Typically to get this rhythm going you need to consider these Annual Meeting – review last year’s goals, set and get alignment among your management team around this year’s plan.

Quarterly Meetings – measuring progress toward your twelve-month goals and discuss what you need to do in the coming quarter.

Monthly Meetings – review progress with everyone, discuss financial results, and make appropriate adjustments. Focus on a monthly learning topic.

- Also, learn to say NO to avoid overcommiting yourself as worthy requests will always be endless. It might not be easy to say no to others but it is a definite path to stress relief.

Only your perception of the situation and the circumstances you find yourself in.

We project our insecurities and inadequacies that we feel deep within our own self, onto anyone we feel challenges our identity. In business and in life it is easy to get caught up in preening and ruffling one’s feathers. When you utter words to place yourself above another person, subjugating their beliefs and values, then consider that it is your feeling

of self-importance that you are imposing on the other. Projecting your own dissatisfaction and feelings of self-worth.

Self-esteem and value of oneself can be shrouded when we project our anger or disappointment onto another human being.

Ego returns to our own identity and our self-worth issues that is, the manner in which you see yourself in the world. Ego isn’t a bad thing it is your choice of how you show up in life. Be congruent with who you really are. Check in with yourself before you cast dispersions on someone else. Where is what you have to say coming from? Is it coming from a place of service and humility? Always connect with your authentic truth first. Listen to that inner voice, your gut. Embrace and be open to change, direction and spiritual instruction.

So this is what I share with my clients, ego is not a dirty word it all comes down to the intention placed behind it.

I attended seminars with Sir Richard Branson, Zig Ziglar, Dr Denis Waitley, Anthony Robbins and Robert Kiyosaki, so it may not surprise you to hear that I went from being an Engineer to becoming an Entrepreneur.

I had already applied Entrepreneurial Thinking to a challenge I had when I was just 8 years old. I was a mad keen

footballer and one day my football burst and I had no money to buy another one.

So I turned my home made billy-cart into a flat topped trolley and went off to meet the coaches as they arrived in the seaside resort of Blackpool UK. I then offered to take the visitors and their luggage on a guided tour to their hotel in exchange for their loose change. Problem solved….

More than enough cash to buy a football and treat my friends to a lolly or two.

As an Entrepreneurial Thinker, it was always interesting when asked at a networking event “What do you do” Well, have you got an hour or two as I DO a lot. I run multiple businesses, I mentor students and business owners and I am an Investor.
