OUR JUNIOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
Dear new Junior School Faculty
Each month members of the Branksome Hall Asia school management team prepare a report that includes highlights of the month, action items for the upcoming month and discussion points for the months ahead. As I reflected on January and February I thought I’d share some highlights with you: •Student growth – 44 new students joined the Junior School, with further admissions interviews scheduled next weekend •Over KRW 20,000,000 was raised by a new Junior School CAS initiative called “Plaid Tidings” that involved members of the entire BHA community, local Jeju community and members of
staff from other International schools in the area. The money raised will help a local children’s centre to buy musical instruments and provide music lessons for children, amongst other things •Parent information sessions focused on: the assessed curriculum and PYP Exhibition •Cross school moderation of writing samples proved enlightening •Junior school volunteer participation in the following committees: restorative practice, academic honesty, risk management, learning technologies committee The PYP Exhibition is now fully underway; transition planning is at the advanced stages for students as they prepare to continue their learning journey in the Middle School; we look forward to whole school professional development opportunities in three key areas (digital storytelling, English language learning and thinking skills) as well as individual IB PYP professional development workshops to be attended by a further
6 staff in Hong Kong in the near future. The staffing picture for 2015-16 is now complete and we are at the final stages of deciding which grade you will be working with, if you are a class teacher. We will put you in touch with teaching partners who will be invaluable on both professional and personal levels. Our Human Resources team will continue to be your first point of contact as they help to enable a smooth transition and orientation to your new home. They will help with practical queries such as visa, relocation, flights etc. We are delighted to welcome you as you join our exciting journey and look forward to the many and varied contributions that you will make to the students, parents, staff, the environment as our school continues to grow and thrive. I look forward to meeting you in Jeju in August. With kindest wishes, Susan Tilney Head of Junior School
OUR MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
Dear new Middle and Senior School Faculty
I am happy to extend a warm welcome to you and your families and a hearty congratulations to you for signing on to join us next year at Branksome Hall Asia. We have an outstanding faculty and I know that each of you will fit in quickly and contribute strongly to the work and goals of our division. This is why we hired you! You will find that Branksome Hall Asia is a very busy place and that we have high expectations for our girls to be successful and to be supported to the fullest in their learning. We know that you share these goals with us. In the past few weeks we have seen our Grade 9 students return from a
3-week exchange program at Branksome Hall Canada, our middle school girls compete in the in-house and tri-school Science Fair, and our seniors complete their mock examinations. We are also in the midst of transition meetings as we are helping our grade 9 and 10 students select their courses for next year and as we are preparing both our grade 5 and 6 students to join the MYP in the middle school next year. We have been working this year on curriculum development across our middle and senior school program with the aim of developing both horizontal and vertical articulation documents within each department by the end of June. The creation and revision of unit plans to support this structured curriculum will follow as a high priority of our work for next year. We also intend to apply for accreditation next year and your help with this goal will be much needed. We are in the process of setting up our teaching schedules for next year, but I don’t expect this work to be completed until toward the end of April, at which time you can expect to receive contact
from me again regarding the specific classes you will be teaching. In the meantime, please feel free to email me with any questions you may have regarding our Middle and Senior School. I look forward to welcoming you to Branksome Hall Asia in person very soon. I am excited to work with you and know that, together, we will make a difference in the lives of our girls. Warm Regards, Dr. Cinde Lock Head of Academics
C.A.S.E. IN ACTION
Dear new Faculty
Welcome aboard! We, on the senior leadership team, are thrilled to once again be able to recruit the best available staff to Branksome Hall Asia. We are a young school, less than 4 years old. We have authorization in all three areas of the IB, we have a Creativity, Action, Service and Enrichment (CASE) program that is both vibrant and balanced for our students and staff, and we offer an amazing array of academic options to better facilitate academic rigor in our Middle and Senior years.
from Business at NYU, through Medicine at Seoul University, to Fine Arts at the Chicago Institute and beyond. Of course, there are many things that we are working on as well. As you know, the majority of our students are learning English as a second language. Many of our faculty discussions are centered on finding and analyzing strategies to maintain academic rigor while scaffolding for language learning needs at the same time. We look forward to having you contribute to these and many other discussions as we continue to address these challenges. It is an exciting place to teach. The island itself is truly beautiful. From the occasional, Hendrix-esk, purple haze over Mt Halla to the swell at Jungmun Beach; Jeju Island is a true wonder of the world. It has a great deal to offer those that enjoy the outdoor life.
answering the subject-based questions that you may have. Timetables for 201516 are well on the way. We will also be in contact with you as we start to plan for C.A.S.E. (BHA’s broad Creativity, Action, Service & Enrichment co-curricular program) term 1 next year. It may be a good time to think about what you would like to offer at BHA in our C.A.S.E. program. You are welcome to peruse the C.A.S.E. portfolio list on our website to get an idea of some of the activities that we currently run for the children. There are core activities that will always be a part of the program that could use your expertise but also areas of the C.A.S.E. portfolio that ebb and flow with staff interests and abilities. http://branksome.asia/our-advantage/ co-curricular-activities/ Once again, welcome to BHA. We are looking forward to learning with you. Warm Regards,
Our students, BHA’s first set of graduates, are destined for tertiary education all over the world. The fields of study are many and varied but range
We will be in touch with you over the coming months as you prepare for your move to BHA. You will receive a letter from your Head of Department better

HAVING A CHAT IN THE RESIDENCE
Dear new Residence Faculty
It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome from the residence community.
experience residence and learning on our campus.
Residence life continues to be busy for students and families alike. Academics envelope the students as they prepare for the STEM Fair, the MYP Personal Project presentations, and for DP exams. This is balanced with the drama production of ‘The Factory’, an adaptation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, service learning projects and the end of season Athletic Academy teams.
Over the next few months I will update you with information specific to residence, and introduce you to the team. Please feel free to email me any questions you may have regarding the transition to our school.
We have recently, welcomed back our Grade 9 students from three weeks in Canada as part of an annual exchange program. This week we also welcome our Branksome Hall Canada visitors to
Warmest regards,
I sincerely look forward to your arrival and wish you well in your preparations to join us here at Branksome Hall Asia.

What to do on Jeju Jeju Island is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and provides endless hours of entertainment and exploration. Mt. Halla rises in the center of Jeju to 1950m above sea level. The rest of the island slopes down from its summit and is covered with dark grey volcanic rocks and ash soil. For children of all ages, there is a huge collection of theme parks and museums. And for adults, there is an expansive range of restaurants, night clubs, casinos and bars for evening entertainment. During the day one can take in submarine tours, hunting and fishing tours, paragliding, golf at any one of the 37 immaculate courses on the island, or simply laze on one of the many beautiful beaches.
Jeju’s international airport provides easy access to other major cities in Asia such as Seoul (50 mins), Shanghai (1 hour 20 mins) and Osaka (1 hour 20 mins). There are also direct flights to Hong Kong, Philippines and Thailand.

WHAT WE DISCOVERED
Staff top tips ESSENTIALS FOR SHIPPING:
SOMETHING THAT’S NOT IN THE BROCHURE:
1
2
3
Adapter for electrical items
Good (wind) jackets & hoodies etc
Favourite herbs and spices
Check around for movers, probably good to go with a company that has a connection with Korea
If you wear makeup/ moisturizer, bring some of your favorites from home
Cards/Board Games (Indoor based entertainment stuff)
If you are above 6’ tall, most all of your clothes can be challenging to find here
Weet-bix
Apple TV & AirPort (WiFi) Potato masher Large tea towels Vegetable peeler Digitize all your school resources rather than bring physical resources Bring an extra external hard drive. Digitize all official documents including Passports, Qualifications, Driver’s Licence, Marriage Certificates, Legal change of names, etc Organize an International Driver’s Licence to rent a car. A bottle opener / cork screw
Shoes are also hard to come by if you have large feet. Take photographs of your hair styles as many Hairstylists here do not speak English.
DVDs and Blu-rays are not popular here, Video games are popular. Internet is really fast so iTunes works well Western meds./ Personal Medication Keep your overseas credit cards and bank accounts active
The closest small grocery store is walking distance; the closest supermarket with some western food is a 30 minute drive away. You will need to drive or have friends who do. Budget for school aged children to pay W600,000 - 800,000 for school expenses, lunches, uniforms etc I would have probably bought a car rather than rent. The island itself is almost entirely Korean so if you don’t want to appear a foreigner, grab a “Teach Yourself Korean” and start practicing!
Copious amounts of Vegemite for the Aussie Battlers
Good beaches (sand toys would be a good idea)
Cheese grater
Wine opener, can opener, and garlic
Shopping in Jeju is limited, so bring a lot of clothes. Many more options in Seoul (a short flight away) and online shopping.
A full piece swimsuit, goggles and a swimming cap for the pool
Check out iHerb or GMarket as many things can be ordered and need not be packed
Coffee grinder GOOD coffee beans
Books(Jeju is not an English heavy island) Favorite Tooth paste
Favorite movies, TV shows on drive
Hot water bottles really good idea.
Traveler adapter for applicances
Reminder: TV is not provided but local purchase is affordable.
Flat bed sheets
Ladies, getting blonde hair colored could be an issue. Write down the product and hair color that your hairdresser uses. This will help immensely.
All furniture is provided so don’t bring everything. Jeju has 4 seasons – pack clothing for all seasons. Korean sizing tends to be fit smaller than western.
