It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt… –Mark Twain Greetings to you all! It’s 4:20 in the a.m. of this fm day and the sky can’t seem to hold back. It’s pouring again, and after it stops I think we’ll have gotten a West Coast for the Altered State. Now, I like to fish and I eat what I catch…but given the food source of our new ocean (formerly northern Texas), I might have to get into the catch and release mode for some time… We hope you are all enjoying out new approach of publishing online. It is far more efficient than just doing the old-school printed publications. For one thing, there was never a Nightflying printed in the last 35+ years that didn’t miss something…usually a major show announcement the day after we print. Nowadays we can release new events on a daily basis. What’s more, while I can talk about the musicians and shows all day long in print, you can’t actually hear it. You can now if you wish. What’s more, since this device in your hand has access to virtually all known knowledge, you can essentially look up any band or act in the world. Think about that for a moment. With these so-called smart devices, you can literally communicate with over 1/8th of the people on the planet. You have your own broadcasting devices…that cover it all: radio, tv, print…you are now multi-media. I don’t know what any of you think about Reincarnation, but if I did live before it was a long long time ago. Things that used to be considered magic are now rudimentary… This Summer has started off with a bang…and I’m not talking about just the thunder and lightening. The outdoor fests have taken hold and the crowds are coming out en masse to rock and slosh in the rain and mud. Can you say rock ‘n’ roll diehards? This, officially, is the Ain’t No Cure… edition of Nightflying. Lots of folks think
we’re referring to the old song by the Who…but I’m not referring to the Summertime Blues… What I mean here is the sheer power of the music…Once the music is in your system, there really ain’t no cure for it…and only the old guard folks will disagree…
In particular…….
Coming right up is the Homegrown Music Festival at Byrd’s Adventure Center on the Mulberry River. This camp-out rock festival will happen July 21 through 23. On the bill are Leftover Salmon, The Wood Brothers, Town Mountain, Earphunk, and about a couple dozen more acts. Byrd’s has been creating many memorable music events for over two decades. Check it out online at byrdsadventurecenter.com…
In Central Arkansas…….
The White Water Tavern has been a strong music venue for several decades. Starting out as The Pitcher, when Larry ‘Goose’ Garrison took it over it became the infamous “down-home neighborhood bar”, and has been one of the very best music rooms in The Altered State. The acoustics of the room are incredible…so much so that when we brought in a sound engineer to record the Blues Patrol album way back when, after checking out the takes he remarked that “the room is playing along! It’s incredible…” I asked him, “yeah, but how do we tune it?” He replied “there ain’t no need to tune it…it’s perfect as it is…” Check out The Creek Rocks, Go Fast, Brad Williams, The Dexateens, Nikki Hill, Brain Stems, Bombay Harambee and more in the coming weeks. A few very special events are set to happen at the club in the next couple months, too. Be sure to make it to the Dangerous Idiots CD Release Show on August 6. Aaron Sarlo and the other Idiots make quite a musical punch. And way out in September, the longawaited Jason Lee Hale release of Child
Jason Hale
of the Dark happens. And a happening it will be, too. On the roster will be appearances of Jay Jackson, Brian Nahlen, Amy Garland, Barbara Raney, The P47s, The Broken Hipsters and much more. We’ll have a feature on Jason and the new record in the coming weeks so watch for it. To put it mildly, Jason has been creating excellent music for years. Visit whitewatertavern.com for details…find the link right here on this site. See the schedule pages for all the dates. For bookings contact Matt White at (501)375-8400……. Fourquarters Bar in North Little Rock is kicking butt and taking names. It’s no surprise, either, with long-time club runner Conan Robinson at the helm…Conan was the power-that-be in the music department at Midtown Billiards for years, turning it into THE late-night music venue in Little Rock. And Fourquarter Bar is up to par in that department. Set to appear in the next handful of weeks are The Buh Jones Band, DeFrance, Joey Farr, Psychedelic Velocity, American Lions and a lot more. Open every day, Fourquarter Bar has quickly become the strongest party room in North Little Rock. It is listed as a private club, but membership fees are nominal and worth it. Please visit fourquarterbar.com for more. Just find their ad right here and click on it. For bookings contact Conan at 501-313-4704, or email to moeman03@ comcast.net……. Dugan’s Pub has been bringing in truly great music since it opened. Set to appear in the coming weeks are Funk Yeah, the Karla Case Band, Good Foot, Big John Miller, Hoodoo Blues Revue and so much more. Good Foot has been drawing the crowds around Central Arkansas for the last several months. Starting out as a 70s-style funk band two years ago, but in the last six months has made a considerable shift in the way of jazz. They also do a lot of Grateful Dead covers and originals. Good Foot is comprised of Matt Treadway, Brian Oman, Brad Birge, Dave Hoffpauir, Dave Williams and Nick Matson. The good thing is when they play the streets are far safer. They describe themselves as “a jam band at the core, and we stretch tunes that are already funky and turn them into something hard to pin down.” Live music at Dugan’s is every weekend, with a few shows tossed in depending on acts coming through, and special events. And the club has one of the finest menus in Arkansas, too… And make a point to check out Stratton’s Market, their magical store next door. A full-fledged liquor store,
Stratton’s also has a wide array of important treats for your munchie needs…see their menu on the website at duganspublr.com. You will be glad you did…and surprised that there’s a store in these parts at all like this… Adjacent to Dugan’s and Stratton’s Market is now Skye’s Little Bistro. This delightful little restaurant adds much charm to the Dugan’s presentation, and lives up to their claim: European Style Bistro meets Arkansas Southern Comfort. Check it out first chance you get. Check it out online at www.duganspublr.com For bookings at Dugan’s, call (501)244-0542……. West End Smoke House & Tavern checks in this time out with a very fine line-up of dance bands. Look for the likes of Jet 420, Mother Hubbard & The Regulators, Dirty Lindsey, Critical Mass, the return of blonde musical bombshell Gold Locks, The Billy Jones Revue, Splendid Chaos, Mayday By Midnight, A Year & A Day, 7 Toed Pete, Special 20 and more. In Hot Springs…….
The annual Hot Springs Blues Festival has been moved back to Bath House Row. After spending last year at Oaklawn Park, the promoters chose to once again go back to Holl Wheatley Plaza. This is where the previous few festivals had been, and much better than the race track. It seems that the good folks of Oaklawn were a bit unamused with the fact that blues fest folk don’t have any money to spend for gambling. On the bill this year are The Spa City Youngbloods, Stuart Baer & Lance Womack, Hump Night Blues Band, The Chiller Blues Band, Cedell Davis & Brethren, The Delgado Brothers, Trey Johnson & Jason Willmon, The Akeem Kemp Band, Unseen Eye, The Noah Wotherspoon Band and Barbara Blue. A great way to end the Summer...
Jason Willmon & Trey Johnson
The Klocks
A new place in town is The Sound Room. Located where The Rib Room was, they’ve gone in and recreated the place. A plethora of good shows are planned in the venue, including Judge Parker with War Pony, Bluffett And The Son of A Sailor, Backroad Anthem, The Velcro Pygmies, JB & The Moonshine Band, The KLOCKS!, and so much more…… Amy Helm
Music & Chicken Joint, that went in where Webby D’s used to be. The new owners near-totally renovated the room, and it has been drawing the crowds in as expected. Set to appear in the coming weeks are 3 Cent Genius, HedTripp, We The Ghost, Uncle Lucius, and Ricochet. For bookings call 903-277-6089…….
Another new place is Wishbone’s
The Big Chill is home away from home for hundreds of musicians, because they are treated at home at the club.. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: on any given night, almost no matter who is really playing, there are countless players sitting in…and even if they don’t they’re sitting there adding their musical energy to the mix, anyway. Officially appearing in the coming weeks are The Hired Hands, Jocko, Joe Hall, Mister Lucky, Southern Avenue, Lightnin’ Lee Langdon, Adam & Aaron, Trey Johnson & Dave Almond, Jeff Hartzell, Earl & Them (the Cate Brother Band), and Moxie amongst others. See the Sound section for dates and details. The Big Chill is open every day, has pool tables, huge screen TVs for sports, several outdoor smoking lounges, a smoke-free bar and some excellent bar food too. The non-smoking main room

move has brought people in that haven’t been there in years. Sure, there are still smokers there, but the biggest part of the club is now smoke-free inside. Plus, and this is the big one, there’s no cover charge here (except during special occassions!) For bookings please call (501)6245185……. Another club worth visiting in Hot Springs is the Ohio Club on Bathhouse Row. This, of course, was the favorite hang out for Al Capone in the golden days of gambling in the Spa…there’s a statue on the sidewalk of Al, permanently resting his bones on a bench. It is most popular for the tourist crowd, and is a very popular place to take selfies with Al. Al Capone, of course, hung out in Hot Springs often, back in its casino gambling days. He claimed it was “for the water,” referring to the natural hot baths. The Ohio has music 7 days a week.
Every Sunday is Larry Womack and Jacquiline, Mondays features the John Calvin Brewer Band, Tuesday is Legacy Duo, Wednesdays is Hump Night Blues Band, Thursdays is for live jazz, and weekends feature the house band, The Ohio Club Players. The food here is superbly prepared, too…and the bar is worth writing home about. For bookings at the Ohio, please call (501)627-0702……. The new Doc ‘n’ Maggie’s is drawing them in. Formerly Razorback Pizza, they’ve added new menu items, added new bar services, torn out walls, and are in the process of renovating overall. It’s a happening music venue now, rather than a pizza parlor that happened to have live music, too. Set to appear in the coming weeks are Even Money Players, Moxie, Big Damn Horns, The Dean Agus Band, Crash Legacy, Trajikly White, and more. For bookings call (501)5251616…….. Maxine’s checks in with an impressive list this time out. Look for shows

featuring Casual Pleasures, Long Tongue, Jonathon Terrell, Hotbed, Open Fields, Mountain Sprout, Space For Lease, Marshall Poole, Talking Liberties, The Uh Huhs, Canterlouper, Foul Play Cabaret Burlesque Show, Louisiana Appleseed, Brian Martin, GhostBones, Muuy Biien, Kay Oddyssey, The Federalis, Josh Powell & the Great Train Robbery, Sea Nanners, Iron Tongue, Adam Faucett & The Tall Grass and more. Maxine’s, of course, was a legendary brothel in the town back in Hot Springs’ golden years - when it was a gambling city before Las Vegas became so popular. For bookings please email bookings@maxineslive.com, or call (501)3210909……. Classics, at the Clarion Hotel, started the Summer live music program on Memorial Day Weekend. David Ball and Jeff Hartzell will be swapping weekends by the pool throughout the summer. For bookings call Mary at (501)5257172…….

Well folks, that’s about it for this time around. We have welcomed the input from readers about our new format. In general, people really seem to like it, thank you very much. A handful of folks have commented that they used to only read it online before. This allows us to update the content a lot more often than in the past with

only printed editions. It also allows readers to check out the band’s music before driving all the way to the gigs, (and risking little things like DWI’s and wrecks and tickets coming home…) It also allows readers to actually purchase the artist’s music and study up on them. It’s also true that statistically about 3/4s of all music sales today are downloads, rather than actual cds and records, and most are downloaded to phones to go with music lovers. Fact is, I’ve not been to a show in years where many of the listeners didn’t have their faces in their phones anyway. Make a point to come to this site each day, because we’re always adding shows as they’re announced and that’s daily, you know?!

Conway’s Hottest Nightclub
TC’s Midtown Grill
THE Rock & Roll party spot in Conway ---Peter Read It wasn’t too many years ago that the city of Conway actually spent a huge pile of money to prevent Outback Steakhouse a restaurant-club from opening in Conway. The business needed to be able to serve alcohol to its customers, and at the time, Conway simply prohibited alcohol nearly across the board with very few exceptions. The VFW and Country Club were those exceptions. Fast forward to now, not only are there several clubs and eateries that have bars, there are a couple whose main business models are, in fact, BARS. One of those, TCs Midtown Grill, has become one of the hottest nightclubs in Arkansas. TCs is open every day, with a full libation bar, live bands every weekend, pool tables, shuffleboard, a large wooden dance floor, and a huge array of electronic games, and a large menu for serving lunch and dinner 7 days a week. There’s a concert-quality stage and sound system, along with a custom light show, and even a special rig from the ceiling for musical acrobatics, i.e., flying musicians above the crowds… (Kids, don’t even think of trying this at home…) Plus, it’s an old-fashoned place that is smokerfriendly. Indoors. With your drink. As it should be. “Look…up in he sky…is it a man? A bird? The Ben Miller Band does Europe Following tour across the USA, band goes overseas to share mudstomp music with the world
---Peter Read We’re so proud. The Ben Miller Band is now on a European tour with ZZ Top, and has been sending in some great shots from the tour. One reason for such pride is that the band is now a combination of two bands that Nightflying sent as our showcase bands to SXSW: The Ben Miller Band and Tyrannosaurus Chicken. After Scott Lieper left the Ben Miller Band to go solo, they were left in a lurch as they had many contracts in force…tours, record deals, and everything that goes upon the many steps of the ladder of success. Meanwhile, their old friends Smilin’ Bob Lewis and Rachel Ammons, known as Tyrannosaurus Chicken, were drawing great attention on their own, touring and performing in many states. Both bands had shared stages together many times. Indeed, they were both part of the Mudstomp Records family started years ago by Curtis Copeland. The reports from the road are exciting, as well as breathtaking. The 6 week tour started a few weeks ago, and is being handled by Monterrey International. To date they have played many European shows, that include concerts in the UK, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The band consists of Ben Miller, Scott Leeper, Smilin’ Bob Lewis and Rachel Ammons. They are each multi-instrumentalists and switch off on guitar, banjo, slide guitar, bass, harmonicas, violin, and various types of percussion. They all do vocals. They are all writing new material for the planned album to be recorded in Nashville after they return from overseas. We’ll have a full-blown feature on the band in the near future…

The Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame recognizes local Blues Contributors ---Danielle Davis, story and photos On Wednesday night, June 15, fans, musicians, and friends and family came out to The Big Chill in Hot Springs, Arkansas to support the 2016 inductees to the Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame. With a standing-room only crowd, many musicians participated in the open blues jam while celebrating the legendary musicians recognized during the evening. 2016 Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame inductees included guitarist Danny Smith, keyboardist/vocalist Mike Fraz, and harp player Greg Batterton. During the evening, the Batterton family accepted the certificate on behalf of Greg Batterton while also remembering the musician for his amazing talents and contributions made to the blues music genre. Many tears of happiness continued to fill the room as the evening progressed. As presenter and musician Mike Dollins announced the induction of The Big Chill as the “Great Blues Bar,” owner Gina Parks was more than accepting of the generous acknowledgment for her fantastic establishment. President Mary Melton accepted the certificate on behalf of the Spa City Blues Society as the non-profit organization was inducted into the 2016 Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame for being the “Great Blues Society of Arkansas.” --DD

ARKANSAS, BLUES HALL OF FAME ® ---Mike Dollins Packing our gear out of a club, in San Diego, California on a Sunday night somewhere around 2001, for a local blues festival, I caught a glimpse of an unassuming guy, leaning up near the front door. He asked, “Are you Mike Dollins,” I answered,”Yes, why?” Dan Marolt introduced his self to me, and we shook hands. I knew who he was, as we had exchanged emails about guitars, and blues. My band had gigged all weekend, and we were really tired. I got Dan’s business card, and he also gave me a shot glass, guitar slide, with a logo on it. In the darkness, I just thanked him, stuffed the items in my pocket and finished loading gear. This brief meeting formed a fifteen year friendship. I soon discovered Mr. Marolt, had created the Blues Hall of Fame ® in 1999. Not just a flash in the pan, overnight whiz bang bigger than life web site. More on the pyramid building aspect that takes longer, but bigger and higher. The next day I pulled up Dan Marolt’s, Blues Hall of Fame ®, web site and read his “Home” page. Dan had done his homework, and I could see he was seriously dedicated to the preservation, recognition and the perpetuation for the American Musical Art Form, “The Blues.” Unlike blues societies, and other induction Hall of Fames, Dan created different levels of induction for blues performers. Besides listing the Legendary Blues Artists with high name recognition, known internationally, he wanted to recognize musicians with local, or regional popularity also. Working musicians that have spent a lifetime honing their Blues playing, and dragging gear in clubs at 9 PM, and back out at 2 AM, night after night for decades playing for a bar percentage plus tips. In visiting Dan’s BHF, web site, (www.blueshalloffame.org), you can’t judge a book by its cover. Like Alice drifting down the rabbit hole, this web site is endless, and detailed like none other. Some of his categories of Blues Artists are: Legendary Blues Artist, Master Blues Artist and Great Local Blues Artist. BHF also inducts Ambassadors and other Blues related individuals and organizations such as Blues Radio Stations, D.J’s, Blues Recording Companies and Managers. Everyone is invited to go to the main BHF web site, and nominate your favorite Legendary, Master or Great Local Blues Artist for induction. Include a few words why you think this Blues Artist should be inducted.
Dan starts his listings of Blues Musicians by World continents, North America, Mexico and Canada. Under the United States the States are listed alphabetical, and that is where you will find; Arkansas, Blues Hall of Fame ®, and also at www.ArkansasBluesHallofFame.org. There you find the inducted Arkansas Blues Musicians exhibits. It is a constant work in progress, where new inductees are added continually. In Dan’s own words,”Every BHF Induction Ceremony is different, New York’s May 20th 2012 Greenwich Village event at the now closed Legendary Kenny’s Castaways on Bleecker Street set the bar high with many long deserved emotional inductions. Magic was in the air that evening. Check it out. We do our best to video and photograph it all.” “Our three annual Induction Ceremonies at Buddy Guy’s Legends have all been truly spectacular, and we have been invited back for a 2016 Induction Ceremony. Chicago’s most famous Blues families, i.e., the Morganfield’s, the Dixon’s, the Guy’s and the Brooks were all there to see their sons, daughters and husbands be inducted, play a song or two,and mingle with the many other up and coming inducted Chicago Blues Artists.” “I mention these four as they were spectacular, magical and very emotional. We have had thirty nine wonderful large BHF Induction Ceremonies, in cities around the nation and around the World. England, Sweden, Greece, Detroit, Michigan, Alabama, Quad Cities, Illinois, Woodstock, New York, Manassas, Virginia, and Arkansas, just to name a few.” “All of these BHF Induction Ceremonies honored Blues Artists for the work that they do, some of whom have spent their entire adult life entertaining us. Each public induction event is documented on our site and can be viewed, i.e, re-experienced, by clicking on the specific event poster on our front page.” “We, here at BHF, feel that the honoring of these Blues Artists publicly, in ceremonies like these, is good work, and is appreciated by many, especially the Inducted Blues Artists, no matter what level they are inducted into.” As I prepared to do this article on Dan Marolt, and the Blues Hall of Fame ®,I asked for an interview, as although I knew the man, I didn’t really know the person, except for his deep passion for blues music. What I found out,is he was
“Born near Chicago 1952”. He states that Joliet, Illinois was the perfect place for him to grow up as a typical working class kid. At that time, many Joliet kids learned to play guitar and formed bands, and he was no exception. Some of his favorite music was by Muddy Waters, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Yardbirds, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Otis Redding, The Box Tops, Wilson Picket, The Temptations and of course B.B. King. He and a buddy drove into “The City,” in 1970, to see B.B., at his favorite Chicago Lounge, Mr. Kelly’s. It left a lifetime memory, seeing the “King of The Blues,” perform live on stage. For anyone interested in blues,a trip through the Blues Hall of Fame ®, web site is worth the time investment. BHF is also found on FaceBook. I asked Dan about his vision for the future of the BHF, and in closing, I’ll give you his words again,”I certainly am no expert on anything, especially The Blues. We rely on you, the general public’s email input. “This gets to our core BHF philosophy which is: Nobody can possibly know everything about The Blues and Blues Artists, but if we all share, and add our own unique knowledge,we,can collectively, create a much more complete, entertaining and comprehensive understanding of The Blues and Blues Artists. Past Blues, Present Blues and Future Blues, all housed within a virtual eMuseum, accessible to all, for free 24/7 to the entire World. We invite every one of you to get involved with Blues Hall of Fame ®. We want to take Blues Hall of Fame ® to the next level, but we need your thoughts and ideas to make this happen.” “Yes, we certainly need more nominations and Inductions of Blues Artists and we encourage you to submit them, and to possibly host your own Local BHF Induction Ceremony, but I am now talking about creating Blues Hall of Fame ® 2.0. Can you help us find our way towards something even more exciting? We are open to all ideas and suggestions, just send us an email DanMarolt@BluesHallofFame.com. ---MD Ed’s Note: The Arkansas Blues Hall of Fame is not associated with The Interntaional Blues Foundation

Best Of Burger - (1949 - 1998)
Things We Miss About Burger Reprinted from various editions Dear Flabby, My nose hairs are way too long but my religious upbringing forbids the cutting of hair. This wouldn’t be a big problem except that I just got back in my church after proving that my seizure disorder commonly known as St Vitus dance did not constitute a recreational activity, and I don’t want to get into trouble again. Furthermore, I am being forced to wear dresses at ankle length, which is not only out of fashion, but most people think it looks funny on a guy, which I am. Also, and I don’t want to sound like a chronic whiner, my father, who’s the preacher in our church, is a snake handler. That would be okay, except he makes us kids catch ‘em for him, which takes all day Saturday and most of Saturday night, which is my only time off from school (except Sunday and you can guess what I do all day Sunday). Anyway, how’m I ever gonna be able to fit in with the kids my age with all this weird stuff going on in my life? I need help and I need it bad. Bear in mind that my Pop still believes in all that “spare the rod and spoil the child” stuff. If you don’t have time to advise on all I’ve asked, just concentrate on the snake thing. My cousin Wilford Joe got bit on the big toe two weeks ago Saturday by the nastiest ol’ bush rattler you ever saw. If we hadn’t hung him from the loft and lanced his toe with a hay hook, he would’ve croaked for sure. As it was his leg swole up and turned more colors than a 64 crayon box of Crayolas. Bless you and hurry. sincerely, Buck Head Dear Buck, I think what you’ve told me is a perfect example of today’s bitchy, spoiled, snot-nosed youth.... Here you are struttin’ around town with long hair, doin’ some kind of modern dance step that you jokingly refer to as a medical problem, dressed up as a girl, then you gripe about not fitting in with your little preppy school crowd. You gripe about helping your father then gripe some more about getting the ass-beating you no doubt deserve. Listen up, buddy boy, and listen good: It’s time little snots like you shut up and learn to appreciate the religious freedom that guys like your Pop have suffered to preserve for ungrateful little pigs like you. Straighten up and tell your cousin Wilford Joe that if he’d wear shoes like a decent citizen he wouldn’t get snake-bit! signed, The Right Rev. Flabby Dear Flabby, When I grow up I wanna be just like you. signed, Albert Schweitzer Einstein Bach Redford Dear Dude, Don’t you never change, you compassionate, intelligent, good-looking fellow, you. signed, Humble-Flab Dear Flabby, I am an elderly gentleman in excellent health and a successful businessman. This person was not only attractive but appeared to be financially well-to-do as well as witty and charming. I was tempted as any person might be, but oddly enough I am married with children which might seem strange since I was at a PWP meeting. My spouse is cold, uncaring, conceited, and mean, but I said “I do” and here I am. So what do you suggest? All my girlfriends and ex-girlfriends believe all of it (I got them hooked). Well, my Mom, Dad, brother and sister are all mad at me because I read it!! Did you hear that Dolly Parton was going to replace Delta Burke or that Saddam goes to bed with five girls a night or that the USA is trying to make reforms in the Middle East! (Why US?) Hard working middle class people to the core .. Both whom I believe got to live their dreams of settling down raising and providing for a family filled with lots of love.. That’s what I’m grateful for most. That there were people who loved and supported me unconditionally and still do to this day. That’s what inspires me so much to give back, because I was so blessed with so much empowerment. No matter what crazy idea I came up with they supported it always said the same thing, “You can do like whatever you put your mind to”. I really believe that was instilled in me my whole life. Sometimes leading me to be a bit rebellious, but mostly inspiring me to not set limitations on what was possible. Whether it be the NFL, or a rockstar... They never doubted the possibly of achieving it. Nor did I. The truth is that anything I put my mind to seemed to happen.. I believe that is true for anyone for better or worse. Be careful what you wish for cause you will probably get it. The point is to kneel what to do with it when it happens. I actually ended up in a few hot seats, particularly back seats.. I wish that was a sexual pun buts it’s not. I even got arrested immediately after a set at George’s for a Bikes Blues BBQ show for smokin a post show celebratiry spliff.. Suppression at its finest.. A few legal speed bumps here and there and I eventually was able to harness that energy and shift my focus from the former life of a collegiate athlete, to a working class musician.. with minimal collateral damage during the transition.. After getting my head screwed on straight from a very confusing, experimental time walking out on a college football scholarship at 18 years old, 307 lbs, with the dream of makin it in the music biz.. In our semi-southern heartland of a culture it seems your either a far right fundamental Christian, or a far left party animal self-medicated hippie. I now think moderation is probable the best all around answer on those fronts and finding that balance is key in a world that is saturated with consumerisms, advertisements, and religious extremism. I had a lot of emotional stuff to work out from my childhood experience of witnessing a suicide at age 7, to dealing with childhood obesity and depression, initially very introverted and feminine by nature, total mommas boy, to the polar opposite testosterone fueled ego driven locker room alpha male. Music has been a total healing experience for me. I was blessed to have grown up with a musical step-family of a certain “Brothers Band”.. and got a pretty good running start at the musician hustle. Basically since 2005 I’ve toured non-stop, 49 states, 3 countries, 3 independent albums, performed and recorded with Grammy Award Winners, started an entertainment agency, cocreated a record label, worked on set as a location manager for Neil Young, got a record deal produced by Dave Jerden (The Rolling Stones, Janes Addiction, Alice In Chains) with Modern Roots Music Company based out of LA, and recently got the title track to my upcoming album “No Place Quite Like Home” placed on a Hit TV series on Showtime Networks - House of Lies. This song and album for me represents the best of what I have to offer as an artist. It’s a real story, from real experience that really provided resolve in my life about my own identity relating to our community as a whole, and the planet we live on and how it is all connected, how WE are all connected. The song is a milestone built on a foundation of brotherhood, love, and honoring our existence as one people. I happen to be very blessed with health and education, community support.. So many things.. That so many people go without.. I believe in my heart that of you are fortunate to receive these kind of blessings in this life, that it is a duty to share that light with the world around you. That is the Karma. I’ve had the experience of performing on yachts with millionaires, to the streets with the homeless.. I can testify.. We are all One. Through the gift of music and art I have been given and received so many special privileges it really out things in perspective. I am proud and consider my self lucky to speak these words often.. “I am rich beyond my wildest dreams, I just don’t have money”. That keeps me focused on the important things in life. Money is good. Resources are great, but the people in our lives.. That’s where the real value is. See I am a part of you, and you are a part of me.. The reality is that there is No “I”, only a “We”, and we have a choice. There is a mutual relationship in all things of nature, and nature and all things. For every breathe of life, something was sacrificed in its honor. Our breathe, comes from the trees. Which comes from the flowers that wilt into the soil.. I believe that at the root of our culture, we have forgotten this agreement. We tend to take and not remember what we were supposed to give. This song, is my gift to that agreement. I am going to be donating 100% of my digital and online sales to a National Homeless Organization/Non-Profit. It’s something I’m really proud of for myself.. I wouldn’t have it any other way really. This life has been good to me and the least I can do is take something that was created out of that blessing and bless others with it. I’ve been a lot of places, I’ve seen so many faces... For me to selfishly indulge in this life, while knowing there are brothers and sisters of mine out there without basic shelter. All year round, is simply unacceptable. I have made a personal decision to spend the rest of my life paying it forward.. There is no other more important place for me to start than my hometown. As comfortable as it is there believe it or not there are 3600 Homeless in NWA right now, 1/3 of which are women.. That’s unacceptable to me for a region that has the highest employment rate and cheapest cost of living, and not to mention the wealthiest family on Planet Earth. I’m not gonna sit around and wait for others to fix the problem so in asking the community to join me for some of my Album release shows in our region like at George’s on Aug 11, or Patton Alley Pub (Springfield) on Aug 12.. Almost all of our shows are curated and hosted by my production company UNiTE THE ViBE, as a festival type showcase event with vendors and visual artists, and a Non-Perishable Food and Clothing/Blanket drive for local shelter’s. We do this all over the country, and soon to be world.. currently on our US Tour for UTB Presents: “No Place Quite Like Home”. We hope to see you soon! In closing I just want to say thank you to all those that made it possible for me to live and pursue my dreams. Looking forward I want to encourage everyone to show more love, be more encouraging to others, love and respect their selves fully. Life is what you make it. Dream as big as you can dream. Every breath is worth taking. Breathe in what you believe. Just be here now, there’s not a moment to waste. We are all brothers and sisters, there is no race. One Mother the Earth, we share this place. So let’s let love erase all the hate..
---Bob Boyd
I want to tell you about a new Facebook page I have created. It’s called Bob Boyd’s Word on the Street. I would like you to visit it and check it out. I study the Bible every day and in order to understand it better, I re-phrase it in what I call street language. It’s like you and I would talk with each other if we met on the street or in a store or somewhere. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes stumble over the words of some of the Bible translations. I have to paraphrase it so it becomes clear to me. A lot of people who have read my ‘Word on the Street’ version say it has been a big help to them. Every weekend, I add one new chapter, from the book of Genesis, John or Romans. I hope you ll go there and leave me some feedback if you like or don’t like. Although I just turned 80 years old, I still love being in the midst of my old friends and customers. I’m still working behind the counter at Little Rock Frets on Friday afternoons. I’m also teaching advanced piano styling and accordion there on Tuesdays, in Bryon Knight’s new location on Breckenridge Drive. If you haven’t dropped in, come on down. As always, Bryon does a great job with guitar and all stringed instrument repair. Now he has a great amplifier repair department, too. He invites everybody to come and hang out. Just make yourself at home and pick up a guitar and play some, like everybody did at my old place, Boyd Music Center down on 12th Street. I think it’s great that Bryon is providing a place where we can hang out, and pick and grin and visit like we used to. He’s got a really good guitar teacher too, named Mark Jaster. My old friend Peter Read is still loyally serving everybody in our musical community. I enjoy his new on-line version and fully understand why he has gone to on-line publication only. Now we don’t have to go hunt for a place to pick up a printed copy. He deserves a pat on the back (not too hard!) for all these years of dedication he’s put in for us. On my 80th birthday, with my trusty little dog B.J. and my sturdy walking stick, I was walking back up the hill near my home. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed by an inspiration to write a poem. Here it is: The Rhyme of the Ancient Marathoner by Bob Boyd With my trusty stout walking stave, Like that ancient bard sailor of yore, I plodded, gasping, up The Hill As my lungs were screaming No more! It’s been many years, (it was decades ago,) I would have scoffed at this slope, In my glorious fit 40s as a marathoner, Over many a mountain I’ve loped. But the years have come and the years have gone And my ship is not as strong; My sails are now tattered, my beams are battered, And I can’t make voyages so long. I ve sailed the seas for fourscore years, I ve weathered many a gale; Now my timbers creak, my rudder is weak, But still every day, I set sail. The Shipbuilder, in His wisdom, Has equipped me to sail many years; I must keep my vessel seaworthy As the end of my long voyage nears. There are many who stand on that golden shore Maybe they’ll cheer, as I sail into sight; So as I near the end of my voyage, I must steer my ship safely and right...

I recently read an article in a local magazine about a local band. It was a familiar story. Some local guys who had been playing around for several years in different combinations had come together and started playing. They eventually began to mesh and put together a tight little band that begins to see some success locally. The story is still being written in terms of where this band will go and what they might do. Still a familiar story. The band has a young, hot shot guitar player, more talented than most and eager to learn. The thing that struck me was a statement about being content to sit right here at home and play locally. I thought about that for awhile and thought ‘Why?’ Why would you want to stay? With talent like this, what could you possibly gain by sitting here at home? Why not go spread your wings and see what the world has to offer? I get it that some people are content to stay right where they are. No gumption to set out in the world or they’re just happy to be living life where they were raised. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all. My own parents have lived their lives in the same small town where they were born and raised. By choice. They could have set off for anywhere to make a life but they chose to lay down roots where they grew up. I get that. I know that my parents did get out and see a piece of the world before they decided to settle in their home town. At least they had something to compare it to before making their decision. It’s the folks who never leave the nest who puzzle me. How do you know what’s out there if you never go? I lived in north central Arkansas for a number of years and worked with high school kids who had never been outside the county they lived in. They never knew what was beyond the county sale barn on Saturday mornings. Don’t get me wrong. I completely get the notion of finding the place of your dreams, the contentment and comfort of familiarity. I get it. What puzzles me about people, especially people with a gift or a talent, are the ones who never give it a shot. The ones who are obviously a notch above the rest who choose to stay right here at home, never seeing what’s beyond the horizon. I almost feel sorry for those folks. They’ll never know. They’ll never know what it feels like to chase a dream, to win the prize, to take a chance and make something happen. They’ll never know what it’s like to fail, to grow as a person and performer because they failed. To pick themselves back up and keep going. Buddy Flett was in Hot Springs recently to be the featured artist at the Hump Night Blues Jam, sponsored by the Spa City Blues Society and hosted by The Big Chill (1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month). Flett grew up in the Shreveport area and saw some success in the bands ‘A Train’ and the ‘Bluebirds’. He played guitar with the late Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf) and spent time recording and touring with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, winning a grammy as a result. In the middle of all this success Flett nearly died, stricken with a disease that forced him to re-learn how to play guitar and sing. After he began playing again, Flett would tell his audience from time to time that “…if you hear me play the same chords over and over for a little bit it’s because I’m trying to remember the words to my song…” He had lost his memory, fine motor skills and coordination. He didn’t let that hold him back. Flett re-learned to play guitar. Re-learned songs he had written. And he began to perform again. Today, Buddy Flett is back to performing and enjoying some success. He could have just as easily taken his lumps and chosen to stay at home, a place filled with familiarity and safety. No one would have faulted him for it. No one would’ve been upset. He did the opposite. Flett took his re-learned talents and began to travel and perform again. Not long ago I was in Memphis for the Blues Music Awards. These awards recognize the best of the best in the blues music world. In conjunction with the BMA’s is the annual induction of artists and their works into the Blues Hall of Fame. This year’s class of inductees
included Elvin Bishop. Bishop has had his share of ups and downs in his career. He had left Oklahoma for Chicago and found his way into the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, playing with Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield, leaving his mark as a guitarist. Years would go by and not much notoriety came his way. Bishop continued to play blues and rock and roll, never really out of the scene but certainly not leading the charge. He experienced a nice bump in his career in the 70’s when Mickey Thomas sang “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” on one of Bishop’s albums. The song was a hit and Bishop was back on top. It would be years before Bishop saw notoriety again. He began releasing blues albums and would eventually earn Album of the Year honors at the BMA’s. His career, though far from over, would reach its zenith over the last couple of years as Bishop was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as part of the Butterfield Blues Band) and the Blues Hall of Fame. He took a chance years ago when he left Oklahoma to find his way in the music world. Though a trying journey at times, Bishop chased a dream that lead him around the world. I ran into a horn player named Al Basile backstage at the BMA’s. Basile was up for Instrumentalist of the Year, a category that is a catch all for horn players, harmonica players and folks who don’t play guitar, drums or bass. I’d met Basile several years ago at the BMA’s when he was nominated for the same award. Basile records his own music and he also does time with the Duke Robillard Band. Speaking with him I told him congratulations on his nomination and good luck. His reply was something to the effect of “I don’t expect to win, not with this talent (he was facing some stiff competition). But, man it’s sure nice to be recognized.” Basile has been blowing horn for years, carving a niche in the music world. He continues to press his talent and grow. He took a shot years ago and because of it has become an in demand horn player and talented performer. There are lots of stories like these out there. These are the ones you hear about because these guys took a chance at something they wanted. They didn’t let fear or complacency set in and hold them in place. Did they fail as they went? Likely. Several times probably. Will they fail again? Probably. Does it keep them from trying? Not a bit. They chose to reach out beyond their comfort zones and chase a dream. What would have happened if they had not? What would our view of music be if these people had not been a part of it? Would they have been content to be playing gigs in their home town, knowing they didn’t take a chance? I don’t know. I felt a little sorry for the band in the article when
I had finished reading it. I’ve no doubt they’ll find success locally. They might even play a few gigs outside of town. They’ll make some money and be content to do so. People will come see them. It’s a familiar story. I predict that eventually this band will do one of two things. Either they will find a weekly gig that will pay a little bit and they’ll have a good time, settling in to the every fill-in-the-day gig each week or they will slowly fall into dissatisfaction with the lack of notoriety and playing time and will go separate ways only to be reincarnated in the form of another local band, content to remain just that. Local. There’s nothing wrong with local bands, local music. Hell, I live for the local music scenes around Arkansas and in other cities where I travel. It’s part of the fabric of any travel experience for me. My point to all this is why not take the shot? If you’ve got the talent, take the shot. Go to Nashville or Austin or Los Angeles or New York. Put yourself out there and see how you stack up against the rest of the world. What is the saying going around on facebook? It’s an old saying but still holds true…You always miss 100% of the shots you never take. You’ll always regret 100% of the things you never tried. Something like that. You get the point. Take the shot. Who gives a shit if you miss? At least you took the shot. To me it seems to be a lot easier to be at home knowing I took a chance at something bigger than me. I know, at least for me, I can look in the mirror every day and know that I gave it a try. I’m still taking shots at hopes and dreams and I’m an old, hateful bastard. What have you got to lose? Maybe you hit the big time. Maybe you come back home. Either way, you know you gave it a try. And isn’t that better than sitting back later on, regretting the opportunity that you didn’t miss rather than the chance you didn’t take? See ya backstage... ---DH

feels just like my wife’s ass.” The bald man feels his own head and says with a grin, “You know, you’re right…” Q: How many bouncers does it take to throw someone down the stairs? A: None…He fell…
A BLONDE JOKE THAT YOU’VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE . . . After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, ‘Well, then, maybe I’ll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!’ The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, ‘Well, little lady, why don’t you go give it a try?’ The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand. He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank. Nearby were 7 more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the gator. Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustration… “Son of a bitch!! THIS ONE’S BAREFOOT, TOO!”

Please copy and paste this to your status if you’re constantly being asked to copy and paste things to your status by people who copy and paste things to their statuses. Many people won’t copy and paste this, but my truly sarcastic friends will copy and paste it because they’re sarcastic by nature. If you don’t copy and paste it, then this means you hate bacon. And if you hate bacon, the terrorists win, and a unicorn dies. Possibly puppies as well. And occasionally baby goats. But never dragons because of something to do with tomatoes… Q: What do you call a situation when two people are thinking of sex and rest of the people are thinking about food? A: A wedding… A guy was looking for a place to sit in a crowded university library. He asked a girl: “Do you mind if I sit beside you?” The girl replied in a loud voice: “I DON’T WANT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU!” All the students in the library started staring at the guy. He was truly embarrassed and moved to another table. After a couple of minutes, the girl walked quietly to the guy’s table, and said with a laugh: “I study psychology, and I know what a man is thinking. I guess you felt embarrassed, right?” The guy then responded in a loud voice: “$300 - FOR ONE NIGHT!! ISN’T THAT TOO MUCH?” All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock. The guy whispered to her: “I study law and I know how to screw people...” Son: Mom, when I was on the bus with Dad this morning, he told me to give up my seat to a lady. Mom: Well, you have done the right thing. Son: But mom, I was sitting on daddy’s lap… A young girl after her honeymoon came fully exhausted and tired. When her friends asked her what happened? “ When this 70 year old bastard told me he has saved a lot from last 50 years, “I thought It was MONEY…” A drunk guy in Alaska decides to go ice fishing. He starts sawing a hole in the ice, when a loud booming voice says, “You will find no fish there.” The drunk looks up, ignores it, and continues on. The voice booms again, “You will find no fish under the ice.” The drunk looks up and says, “God, is that you?” The voice says, “No, I’m the manager of this ice rink…” A man walked into a bar and says, “my daughter just had the first Irish test tube baby.” He says, “it was a girl and she was conceived in a bottle of Guinness.” The bartender says, “what does the baby look like?” The man says, “she is dark, thin, and has a good head on her…” A guy goes into a bar and seats himself next to a hot looking woman. After a few drinks he musters the courage to talk to her. After a few more drinks and a little conversation he leans over to the woman and asks, “Can I smell your Pussy?” The woman is outraged and answers with a stern, “Of course not!” The drunk man replies...”Oh, then it must be your feet…”
A somewhat drunk man feels a bald man’s head and says, “Say, your head

A Texan bought a round of drinks for all in the bar and announced that his wife had just produced a typical Texas baby, weighing a whopping twenty pounds. “WOW!” was the response from everyone at the bar. Two weeks later the Texan returned to the bar. The bartender recognized him and asked, “Aren’t you the father of the baby that weighed twenty pounds at birth? How much does he weigh now?” The proud father answered, “10 pounds.” The bartender said, “Why? I know that babies lose some weight after birth, but ten pounds? He did weigh twenty pounds, didn’t he? What happened? The proud Texas father said, “Just had him circumcised…” Part of me says I can’t keep drinking like this. The other part of me says, “Don’t listen to him…he’s drunk…”
Sign seen in a bar: “Those drinking to forget please pay in advance...”

Best of Burger (1949 - 1998)
LEO (July 23-August 22) Quit yer gripin’ will ya! Of course I always say creepy stuff about Leos, look who I’m dealin’ with... you’re so damned self-absorbed that you never even notice the fact that every sign gets trashed just like you...everybody...not just you...got it? Quit whinin’, okay?
3T 'YPSY 7OMAN
ARIES (March 21-April 19) Forever young at heart, blithe of spirit and unafraid to ask any question, the intellectually bent Aries begs for conversation, give-and-take, exchange of ideas...for example: “You dress up like Maid Marian; I’ll dress up like Robin Hood. You act coy and I beg: ‘Let me just put one arrow in your quiver‌’â€?
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) For you this month could be strange! Example: fairly normal Taurus, unliked by friends, suddenly has good fortune, joins amateur hockey league, gets new transportation, falls in the mud, acquires a new pet, received Mark Twain book from an acquaintance, has plastic surgery, becomes a union fruit picker, receives an award at work for being the most obvious ass kisser in the office, and gets a raise. Schmuck lucks, pucks, buys truck, lands in muck, gets domesticated duck, reads about Huck, gets a tuck, plucks, and finally sucks...the result is big bucks. Yuk!
VIRGO (August 23-September 22) Gypsy Woman regrets to tell Virgo that the news for you ain’t fit to print...best of luck‌
LIBRA (September 23-October 22) Lemme make it short and sweet; the eleven other signs voted and, sorry, but your sign is cancelled‌
SCORPIO (October 23-November 21) Scorpios will discover marked improvement in social skills, earning them much-longed-for membership in the Country Club...unfortunately the Country is Iraq‌
SAGITTARIUS (November 22-December 21) Starting right...NOW...all Sags have kooties... you’re it...verrrbotten, taboo, jock itch...henceforth shall you be known as...Doo-Doo-Head‌ GEMINI (May 21-June 20) This is a time for slowing down, cutting back, and looking ahead. The Twin only finds the cure for cancer, AIDS, and cystic fibrosis this month, while toying with inexpensive household products. The cures cost pennies and Gemini donates all the profits to a “Save The Cancerâ€? society...slow action for the Gemini, but not bad by most standards, not bad at all‌
CANCER (June 21-July 22) Actually the Cancer is not as goofy as appearances might indicate. Note: fairly new, operating transportation, spouse w/job, well-dressed, well-fed...well off by most standards. What me worry? The Cancer‌ Š 1992 Nightflying Publications. All Rights Reserved.

CAPRICORN (December 22-January 19) Mange-ridden, pigeon-toed, impotent, web-footed, cat-beshatted, wart-infested, and incapable of caring for yourself, you will throw yourself from a craggy precipice which proves too low to be fatal...a hopeless cripple, you roam the streets of your home town until at long last you are picked up by Animal Control. Unsuccessful attempts at putting you to sleep at the Humane Society Shelter leave you simple-minded and ugly to behold. Fate intervenes at the eleventh hour and well-meaning, psychopathic, yet well-paid advertising consultants mold you into a viable candidate for a coveted electoral office...just goes to show...scum floats to the top...
Yesterday’s weirdness is tomorrow’s reason why...
AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18) Your dreams seem about to come true. You’ve finally caused your spouse to die of causes too numerous to mention. The grandchild whom you were awarded legal guardianship of, after successfully fooling the court by lies, false evidence, and cheap courtroom theatrics, ends up in the state pen...your manipulative and controlling behavior at last brings your karma home to you...your nose falls off for no known medical reason... you are left alone and helpless with only two gaping, dark and hairless nostrils through which the world can readily view your evil mind and its purpose. Alas, you just wanted to have your way‌
PISCES (February 19-March 20) In the unwavering belief that the pen is mightier than the sword, you, like an idiot, accept a challenge to duel it out with a professional fencing instructor from L. A. Armed only with a Bic ball-point, you meet the master of ĂŠpee on the killing ground with a blind dwarf as your second. Your tombstone reads: “Here lies Pisces Dumb as a clod All his blood leaked out Through the punctures in his buttâ€? (it don’t rhyme, but neither does a duck)‌
Dear Flabby Dear Flabby, I’ve been an entertainer my entire life (even as a baby, people would laugh at me) and I find that, having weathered the ravages of Bubblegum, Manilow, Disco, Julio, and Metal music, I am come to a discouraging end of the line. This rap thing has got me down bad. I get requests for songs I never even heard of before. People often refer to me as “Homey and my name is Neville. That repetitious beat has me insane with similarity overload and the poetry that seldom rhymes reminds me of vulgarized attempts at French Free-form crap and frankly the entire genre is reminiscent of African Square Dance Calling. I’ve considered going into Amway or insurance sales, but I find the prospect of earning money in this way repugnant and offensive to my artistic sensibilities. In short, I’d rather be dead than resort to this fiduciary means of recompense. Save me lest I end it all. signed, Over-amped on jivey rap
Dear Over-Amped, Give this a try: imagine that you are a product of the streets and that you hate being hassled by “the man,’ pat your feet on the off-beat, and wear your pants baggy and your hat on sideways. Man, you gotta empathize...loosen up a little. Live to groove, home-boy. Lax up, dude. Failing in those efforts just try speedin’ up everything to 78 rpm. Rap music sounds really neat in the “chipmunk mode and it gets over lots faster. Hang in there and reconsider the Amway thing. Some of my former best friends sell that stuff... signed, A tolerant and liberal-minded Vanilla Ice M. C. Flabby Anything that gets your blood racing is probably worth doing... Hunter S.Thompson
