There is a tragic flaw in our precious constitution, and I don’t know what can be done to fix it. This is it: Only nut cases want to be president… ---Kurt Vonnegut Greetings to you all! I’m sitting here at this computer trying to finish up this sucker…the Rites Of Spring edition, full of show dates and launches of the veritable festival guide of the year. It’s a wonderful time of year here in The Altered State…stuff is back in bloom and we seem to be past the delightfully strange Arkansas Winter period. (Can you say “hope”? I recall not too long ago when it was 6 degrees on my front porch as late as April 6th!)

In General…….

While it isn’t news any more that Wakarusa will not happen this year, we’re happy to report that there are quite a few really great festivals on the docket, and they should be a major relief for music lovers. And considering most involve multiple date events that include camping, they should reduce the distress many feel due to a Waka-withdrawal… Please see the Festivals piece elsewhere in this edition…

In Central Arkansas…….

About the nicest thing that has happened in Central Arkansas in a while is the fact that Conan Robinson and Maggie Hinson have finally opened their longawaited Fourquarters Bar in North Little Rock. Planning and renovation has been underway for much of the last year. (It takes a bit to redo a room and open a new nightclub!) The place is fantastic! Make a point

Don Dugan brought Ireland to Little Rock on St. Patrick's Day...the street was jammed from morning until the wee-wee hours for the annual Everything-IrishStreet fair they've been putting on since he built Dugan's...and this year the weather was cooperative. Lots of bands, lots of great food...and lots of great fun for hundreds (if not thousands, actually)...as they say "Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's day...." Dugan’s checks in with a fine music line-up.

spoon cheeseburgers. I’m a connoisseur, mind you, in that department…it’s the best there is. Period. Let’s face it, any club that advertises “where the bands come to get off when they’ve gotten off everywhere else”, must have balls. (Pool balls, of course…) And it’s one of the few establishments that is still smoker-friendly… For bookings please email Conan at moeman03@comcast.net…… Markham Street Grill is also open 7 days a week, has excellent food, multiple screens with multiple sports events always on and a full menu for live music events (no cover charge…) Set to appear in the coming weeks are Mojo Depot, Trey Johnson & Jason

Midtown Billiards remains one of the strongest party rooms in the Altered State. Indeed, it’s the closest thing in Arkansas to any antique New Orleans bar room. Daytime it’s a pool hall. At night, however, it becomes an all-night rock and roll smokey dive-bar. Indeed, you can close your eyes and you wouldn’t know if you were in Little Rock,

For bookings call (501)224-7665……. We're sorry top report that Another Round has closed its doors. Even a new investor came in and quickly found there were some flaws in its bookwork from the short time it had been open. He quickly exited the place before he'd dropped a pile of cash on the flawed system... Wouldn't you? We have to admit that we had many good times there, but alas, as with so many things, the good times must sometimes come to an end... Kudos to all for giving Another Round such a grand chance.......

It was huge last year…it’s expected to be even bigger this year. The Second Annual Steel Horse Rally Motorcycle Rally will happen April 29 and 30 this year. On the bill, other than too damn many bikes, are Jackyl, Juni Moon, .357, Hillbilly Vegas, and a lot more. On Saturday, the 30th, look for Vertical Groove, Colton Cerny & The Red Sun Caravan, the Jason Wells Band, and

Johnson, Skinny Slim, Mark Albertson, some guy named robb, and the Wanda Watson Living Room Project. Thing is, R. Landry’s is mainly a restaurant that is also a bar, and they feature nothing but high caliber musicians. And the atmosphere is perfect. It is a most comfortable room that attracts a nice crowd every night from Monday through Saturday. For bookings call Natalie at (479)783-2505……. The Fort continues to grow into a strong party spot. Betty Payton knows her stuff, and soon it will be one of the premier destinations for music.

and when the ponies are running is the hottest time in the spa across the board. Just driving into town one can feel the energy - the touristry town livens up to ‘party town’. There is no better music room in the Spa than The Big Chill…this is really true, and has been that way since it was open. This is home away from home for hundreds of musicians, because they are treated right. On any given night, almost no matter who is really playing, there

are countless players sitting in…and even if they don’t they’re sitting there adding their musical energy to the mix, anyway. Officially appearing in the coming weeks are The Even Money Players, Moxie (with Tara & Brent), Mister Lucky, Jocko, R & R, Third Degree, Trey Johnson & Dave Almond, Joe Hall, Mike Mayberry & The Slow Hands, Lightnin’ Lee Langdon and a lot more. In addition, every other week is the Spa City Blues Society jam. See the Sound section of this noosepaper…er... publication... The Big Chill is open every day, has pool tables, huge screen TVs for sports, several outdoor smoking lounges, a smoke-free bar and some excellent bar food too. The non-smoking main room

move has brought people in that haven’t been there in years. Sure, there are still smokers there (ahem), but the biggest part of the club is now smoke-free inside. The club was the perfect place for our anniversary bash, too, but it is so every year when we have our party there. There were dozens of players involved and the club was packed from afternoon until close. See the photos at Nightflying.com in the galleries (Nightflying 35). Plus, and this is the big one, there’s no cover charge here... We only have one anniversary party each year... For bookings please call (501)6245185……. Another club worth visiting in Hot Springs is the Ohio Club on Bathhouse Row. This, of course, was the favorite hang out for Al Capone in the golden days of gambling in the Spa…there’s a statue on the sidewalk of Al, permanently resting his bones on a bench. It is most popular for the tourist crowd, and is a very popular place to take selfies

The Copper Penny checks in this month with a huge calendar. On the bill in the coming weeks are John Jordan, Aaron Balentine, The Gable Bradley Band, Christine DeMeo, Tony Bradshaw, Professor Kele, Eric Ward, and more. For bookings please call 501-6222570… There’s about to be a new venue in the Spa in the coming weeks. What was Razorback Pizza is now called Doc & Maggie’s. Bill and Margaret Hawk bought the place and are doing extensive renovations to turn the club into a “major music venue”, including tearing out walls and making the place much larger, as well as building a roof over the outdoor patio. They’ve added a new menu, too (don’t worry, they will still serve the tasty pizza the place is known for), but have added serious restaurant food. In addition, they still have a complete full bar for your libationery pleasures. For bookings call 501-282-8978……. Classics, at the Clarion Hotel, will be starting music in the next couple months. Watch for David Ball and Jeff Hartzell swapping weekends by the pool throughout the summer. And in May, Scotty Mack Sock Hop will happen on the 15th. For bookings call Mary at (501)5257172…….

In Closing…….

with Al. Al Capone, of course, hung out in Hot Springs often, back in its casino gambling days. He claimed it was “for the water,” referring to the natural hot baths. The Ohio has music 7 days a week. Every Sunday is Larry Womack and Jacquiline, Mondays features the John Calvin Brewer Band, Tuesday is Legacy Duo, Wednesdays is Hump Night Blues Band, Thursdays is for live jazz, and weekends feature the house band, The Ohio Club Players. Quite a few special acts are booked to appear during April, including Crash Meadows, Steve Hester and the Legacy Duo. See the calendars for details. The food here is superbly prepared, too…and the bar is worth writing home about. For bookings at the Ohio, please call (501)627-0702……. Maxine’s checks in with an impressive list this time out. Look for shows featuring Lucero, Ginsu Wives, Sounds Del Mar, My Empty Phantom, Hooten Hallers, The Wall Chargers, Sad Daddy, Caleb Ryan Martin, Foul Play Cabaret, Mobley, Ryan Sauders, Upon The Devil’s Request, and more. For bookings please email bookings@maxineslive.com…….

Well folks, that’s about it for this edition. Nightflying is now available everywhere via this site. Bookmark it and come back often. A word about our new format for your phones…many people have commented that it is right up their alley, and they don’t have to find copies wherever in order to keep in touch with the music. As you should know by now, we do it for your love of music…not to mention that keeping derelict musicians off the streets makes the world a much safer place. And the fact is, it beats the hell out of us having to go get real jobs! There are convenient posters with our QR codes all over the region. Use your phone to log in and make sure to make a point to come to this site each day, because we’re always adding shows as they’re announced and that’s daily, you know?! Enjoy the festivals around the Altered State. And remember that these promoters are piling hundreds of thousands of bucks into making these happen. Their dreams are what keep them going to fill your dreams with nice memories. It's very expensive to do...between the crazy costs of bands, equipment, staging, staff, insurance, and all the wherewithall of making multiple day and night events, not to mention the security factors for everyone involved, it's all a huge investment on many people's parts...they should be treated with gratitude and respect for making these things happen. We’ll see you again next time. Until then, then, be sure to keep ‘em flyin’…….

Getting Festive in The Altered State

Music is Love and Poetry under the Stars

---Peter Read It’s that time of year when the big shows begin in The Altered State…our favorite time of the year…Arkansas has a plethora of excellent annual music festivals. Why? Probably because music loving crowd seems to eat them up…Especially the several day events that include camping… We have festivals that celebrate everything: blues, jazz, folk, rock ‘n’ roll, country, bluegrass, peace…mosquitos, crawfish, ticks, poetry…and certain individuals too, such as the Johnny Cash Festival, (he was from The Altered State), Louis Jordan (he was too), Shakespeare (he wasn’t)… In the past few years, the campout-several-daylong fests with multiple bands has taken off big-time, starting with Wakarusa, the Harvest festival and so forth. Now, Wakarusa won’t happen this year, but the several others will, and, while Waka certainly will be missed by thousands, there are quite a few more that should make up for it…

R.I.P. Louis Meyers

pipe-dreaming up what was to become SXSW, the largest music festival of its kind in the world. Louis was a life-long musician and music business professional. A creative musician, he was also deeply involved with band management, booking, and a true music ‘politician’. He was the SXSW director for a dozen years, then went on to become director of the North American Folk Alliance for more than a decade.

Co-founder of SXSW dies a week before 30th festival he gave birth to ---Peter Read It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that Louis Meyers passed away early morning March 10, 2016. Louis Myers is a tremendous musician I met while cutting my first album in 1978. He stopped into the studio where I was recording, just in time to hear me rant about the fact that most of the musicians who were supposed to be there that day to cut tracks had ‘forgotten’ or something. After hearing scratch tapes of the tunes, he asked me “what do you need?” I told him pedal steel guitar, lead guitar, bass and banjo… “I do that stuff…Can I help?” “Where’s your gear?” “Outside in my van…” Not having heard him play, and realizing it was a big job for anyone, I asked him “Do you feel like doing some sessions for the next week?” “Sure…but it doesn’t sound like it’ll take that long…” We unloaded his van and got to work. By the end of that day we’d recorded all the parts, and the rest is history. The Reter Pead album came out and included dozens of his tracks. I didn’t hear back from him for about 5 or 6 years. He’d moved back to his home in Austin, Texas, and was dreaming up a music project… “I do that stuff…Can I help?” was all I asked. I flew to Austin, and we spent the next few days

Louis touched millions of people in his life. His music lives on a multitude of recordings, and his work with both SXSW and North American Folk Alliance has affected millions of people across the globe. Goodbye friend. And happy travels wherever you’re headed… Thanks for all the music… PR

The 2016 Steel Horse Rally

Bike Rally rolls into Fort Smith April 29 and 30

---Sondra Goode After a tremendous kick-off last year, the second annual Steel Horse Rally is gearing up to do it again. The rally has become extremely popular with the community, and the good folks of the Fort have made great plans for the arrival of hundreds of bikers to once again roll into Fort Smith on the last weekend of April, bringing Jackyl and many other bands into town for a gala event. Doors open at 1 p.m. and on Friday when Juni Moon takes the stage at 4 p.m., .357 goes onstage at 6 p.m., Hillbilly Vegas takes the stage at 8 p.m. and Jackyl takes the stage around 10 p.m. Known from the popular reality TV show Full Throttle Saloon, Jackyl and lead vocalist Jesse Dupree bring their unforgettable chainsaw-cutting rock experience to Fort Smith. Plus, enjoy beverages from the Steel Horse Rally Handle Bar and world class tattoos by world class tattoos artists at the Tattoo Alley at the Steel Horse Rally. Tickets at both of these store locations are cash or check only. Please make checks payable to the Steel Horse Rally Inc. Tickets are also available online on this website by clicking the Jackyl Tickets button and paying using credit card or a PayPal account. Tickets purchased online can be picked up at the Will Call window at the Fort Smith Convention Center the day of the show by presenting a valid photo I.D. Jackyl brings a wild, untamed and uncouth approach to rock ‘n‘ roll. Equal parts hard rock, heavy metal and Southern rock, Jackyl formed in 1991 and brought back rock ‘n‘ roll back - back to its down-toearth, wild, fun-loving origins. Full of spit and swagger - and a “dirty“ sense of humor to boot - Jackyl quickly earned a deal with Geffen Records. Jackyl‘s live shows were already legendary before the ink dried on the Geffen contract. Jackyl is: Jesse Dupree on vocals, Jeff Worley on guitar, Roman Glick on bass, and Chris Worley on drums.

The 1992 self-titled debut album went platinum and featured notable rock radio hits like “Down On Me,“ “When Will It Rain,“ “I Stand Alone“ and, most notably, “The Lumberjack,“ during which vocalist Jesse James Dupree performed a chain-saw solo. Dupree‘s chainsaw escapades on album and in concert became one of many Jackyl trademarks. With the release of Jackyl, the band hit the road and barely left it since. Just long enough to record new albums. Touring mates in those early days included Aerosmith, Kiss, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent and Damn Yankees. 1993 saw “Mental *@%.!“ featured on The Beavis & Butt-head Experience, a compilation album of songs tied in with MTV‘s hit cartoon series; it was eventually certified triple platinum. 1994 was one of the most important years in the band‘s career. The second album, Push Comes To Shove, hit the streets and went gold. That August, Jackyl turned in one of the most acclaimed performances at Woodstock ‘94 in Saugerties, NY, and the resulting double album Woodstock 94 went platinum and included “Headed For Destruction“ (a track from Push Comes To Shove). The live recording Night Of The Living Dead was released exclusively in Europe on Mayhem Records in 1996. It wasn‘t long before Jackyl followed A&R legend John Kalodner (who had signed them to Geffen) to Sony Music‘s imprint Epic Records. Cut the Crap was released in 1997 and benefited from two industry heavyweights overseeing its recording: producer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Metallica) and mixer Kevin Shirley (silverchair, Aerosmith). This album spawned the rock radio hit “Locked and Loaded,“ which included guest vocals by AC/DC‘s Brian Johnson. It was the first time Johnson had ever recorded with any artist but AC/DC since he joined the band 17 years earlier. A collection of B-sides titled Stayin‘ Alive appeared on Shimmering Tone Records in 1998 but the biggest highlight of the year was Geffen‘s release of the best-of collection Choice Cuts and the related promotional events Jackyl did to help promote it. Making and Breaking Records: The band earned two Guinness Book of World Records citations and the designation “The Hardest Working Band in Rock ‘N‘ Roll“ for performing 100 shows in 50 days as well as 21 shows in 24 hours. Dupree says the most grueling of the two was 21 shows in 24 hours…Jackyl completed that task in Texas, and the shows were all done with full lights and sound. The daytime sets were 45 minutes long whereas the ones done at nighttime were between 90 and 120 minutes long. Jackyl released Relentless on Humidity Records in 2002. It contained the second collaboration with Brian Johnson, “Kill the Sunshine.“ Universal Music/Geffen Records also issued a Jackyl volume as part of its acclaimed 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection best-of series in 2003.

For a band that built its reputation as road warriors, it‘s surprising that a full-length live album meant for worldwide release did not appear until 2004 with the separate release of the Live at the Full Throttle Saloon CD and DVD on Sanctuary Records. Live at the Full Throttle Saloon was recorded and filmed in summer 2003 in Sturgis, South Dakota, as part of the legendary annual biker rally festivities held there. Steel Horse Rally Vendor Village opens Friday afternoon. The larger Vendor Village located in the parking lot near the 800 block of Garrison Ave., will have vendors from more than two dozen states, offering a wide variety of merchandise, food and beverages. From incredible leather good to engraved jewelry and from loaded nachos to cheesecake on a stick, there‘s something for everyone at the Steel Horse Rally. The Steel Horse Rally Vendor Village will be open Friday afternoon and Saturday all day. Live Music continues at 1 p.m. with Vertical Groove Saturday, April 30th at 1 p.m. at the Fort Smith Convention Center Vertical Groove takes the stage. Following Vertical Groove‘s performance, there will be a break from the music so people can line-up for the 2nd Annual Steel Horse Rally Thunder through the Valley Motorcycle Parade. There is no cover charge, however, donations to the Steel Horse Rally Inc. help charity, are appreciated, and are tax deductible. Tattoo Alley at the Steel Horse Rally opens Friday evening inside the Fort Smith Convention Center. See some of the best tattoo artists in the country, featuring world class tattoos from world class tattoo artists. William O. Darby a reality. The bricks inscribed at the base of the statue were sold as a fundraiser for the project. The bronze state will be dedicated and unveiled during this very special ceremony. Woke up this morning...

Spa City Blues In The Schools Ethan Kuntz off to LA for American Idol show

---Sherree Hughes In its third year, the Spa City Blues in the Schools (BITS) program, sponsored by the Spa City Blues Society, is working hard to “keep the Blues alive” in the next generation of musicians. BITS is a program that focuses on the Blues genre, teaches history related to blues music and includes musical performance skills. The students learn to play or enhance their skills on an instrument of their choice with vocal coaching included. Blues in the Schools meets in the student center at National Park College in Hot Springs on every other Sunday from 2:00-5:00 PM. The Blues in the Schools program is open to all youth grades 7-12, with no skill requirements beyond being willing and eager to learn. Under the leadership of Sherree Hughes, student musicians are mentored and taught by local musicians in their chosen instrument, and then given the opportunity to perform. The BITS band has taken part in several local events including performing for the last two years at the Hot Springs Blues & BBQ Festival and this year at the Hot Water Hills Art and Music Festival. In addition the BITS Kids have performed at venues such as Jim’s Razorback Pizza. Members also traveled to the Rentiesville Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival in Oklahoma last September. In January they performed for the second year on Beale St. during the annual International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase in Memphis Tennessee. Friday evening with a standing room only and playing to a packed house the Spa City Youngbloods took to the stage at Club 152 on Beale Street to share their unique take on Blues classics such as Messin’ with the Kid, Sweet Home Chicago, Crossroads, and John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom. The Youngbloods also debuted an original song- music and lyrics com-

posed by the youth band members- titled “Get Out” as their set finale. The way the band adhered to traditional I, IV, and V, 12 bar blues form in their composition is testament to the focus on Blues tradition and history that the kids have received as part of the well-rounded musical education provided by the Blues in the Schools Program The International Blues Challenge and Youth Showcase were produced by The Blues Foundation. Youth blues bands from every part of North America and from around the globe converged on Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street Friday morning (1/29/16) to take part in a workshop that brought together up-and-coming youth blues musicians to learn about stage presence, traditional blues performance techniques, and how to cultivate the friendships and networks that will keep their careers moving in the years to come. The youth musicians were given the opportunity to perform on stage with fellow ‘Blues Kids’ that they did not know in a jam session led and directed by Fernando Jones who is on the faculty at Columbia College and is the founder of Blues Kids of America. An added note to the credit of the Spa City Blues in the Schools program is one of the BITS members, Ethan Kuntz, recently made it through the Little Rock auditions and received a ticket to Hollywood on the popular TV show, American Idol. Ethan is now working with Wes Jeans to further develop his musical talent and will be playing some solo shows and festivals, including Eureka Springs Blues Weekend on Father’s Day weekend. Efforts are underway to help support the program and provide instruments for members who cannot afford them. The Spa City Blues in the Schools Spa City

Youngbloods are holding a benefit dinner & show on May 14 at the Low Key Arts Building in Hot Springs. (118 Arbor) The BITS band, Spa City Youngbloods, will be performing a set of classic Blues songs, along with their original song, “Get Out”. For ticket information, to find out more about the Spa City Blues Society’s Blues in the Schools program, or to offer other program support, please contact Sherree Hughes via the Spa City Blues in the Schools Facebook page: facebook.com/SpaCityYoungbloods.

find all kinds of data on him and more than a few of his tunes.

---Doug Treadway

Sir George Martin’s name might not immediately come to mind when you think of the Beatles, but he was the guy who first signed them to a recording contract and, more importantly, helped shape their sound by adding strings and other orchestral accompaniment. He was sometimes referred to as the fifth Beatle. Gone now at 90. Author Pat Conroy was but 70, a mere kid, y’know? It’s kind of crazy around here at the moment, as I have just had a week-long visit with my daughter from Washington only to turn around and play host to my grandson. Gogito Interruptum. Let’s see … what else? Oh yeah, some kids came through here, got on my computer and loaded it up with so much stuff (games, etc) that it took me a couple days to get back to my own programs and then the power went out, telephone too. I said it was crazy, did I not? I was thinking of catching a cooperative pigeon and sending my stuff in that way. But I couldn’t find one. I did get a response from a bird in my yard, but he just mocked me. “Oh, go eat a bug” I told him. So I got in touch with Kim Jong Un (through Dennis Rodman, natch) to see if he’d lend me one of his spare missiles. No dice. I tell you, the system is breaking down. Where is Donald Trump when we need him? Oh, wait, I think I see the shadow of his giant furry head looming on the horizon. Hope he likes music.

HOT DISH The Jimmys Brown Cow This is fun. It’s a bit uneven, but that’s okay as long as the good stuff out rocks the meh. And The Jimmys give us that. Indeed, it’s a baker’s dozen of originals that please the palate. Tinsley Ellis likes ‘em. I spy no internet address.

CATCH UP!!! CATCH UP!!! Hell & Lula indie I don’t understand all I know about this duo and I don’t really know all that much. Lead singer / songwriter Michael Alan has played Conway before and might be coming back. Eh, that’s about it. The CD they sent me sounds good, sort of what Michael Jackson and Joan Jett might do. One more thing: Michael’s uncle Mark Hoyt should be able to give you more information at 501-328-5472. ON THE ROCKS Joyann Parker & Sweet Tea Hopeless Romantic That’s me: a hopeless romantic. I still believe things will work out for the best, even as society sizzles and crisps around me. THE AVENUE Jason Vivone & The Billy Bats indie Make no mistake about it, Jason comes right out and tells us to pronounce his name to rhyme with bony or macaroni, got that? This is rip-it-up stuff, so approach with caution unless you as a fearless lover of musicks, as this is a bony-fide band. (I apologize to Latin scholars.) Best of all it’s original. And it carries a message. Ah, no, you must listen to find out. Go to www.billybats.com or look ‘em up on Facebook. If you’re into that.

GROOVIN’ AT THE CROSSE ROADS Heather Crosse Ruf Ruf Records, no kidding? That’s a new one on me, as is Heather Crosse. Or rather as she was before I realized I’d heard her before in Heavy Suga’ & The Sweetones, which we reviewed in these pages some time ago. Heather writes or co-writes most of these tracks, which along with a handful of covers are hot tracks indeed, except for the truly cool ones. I’d be hard pressed to pin a particular style on her, as she goes from blues to R & B to soul to jazz easy as pie (and who says pie is easy?). Reckon I’m deafer than I thought, because I was going to praise “The Car Sale Shuffle” until I looked (luckily I didn’t lose this jacket) and realized it’s “The Clarksdale Shuffle.”Oh well. She’s a bass guitarist as well as lead vocalist and she gets some fine licks from guitarist Dan Smith along with some backup vocals. Other backing vocalists are Sandy Carroll and Vicki Atkins. Mark Vacavone tickles the ivories and displays a mean touch on organ. Percussionist/drummer Lee Williams keeps the beat and adds backup vocals. “Bad Boy Kiss” could be like a country/ pop crossover and “Call On Me” is almost gospel, hell, go ahead and call it Gospel. She has a good strong voice that she can make sweet or savage (as on “You Don’t Move Me No More”). I just can’t find enough superlatives for Heather Crosse and this album. It’s a great selection of movin’ music by a fine woman and a remarkable band. Give her a listen and you’ll probably find yourself moving. Yeah. By the way, this album came with a Ruf catalog, reminding me of other Ruf albums I’ve reviewed. So, my memory is going too.

WE PLAY BOTH KINDS OF MUSIC: RHYTHM & BLUES Mike Dollins Band indie We’ve featured quite a few Mike Dollins albums, from solo guitar to full band. This is one of the best if not the best, both for musicianship and for variety.. Mike and his bandmates play blues for the most part, but it’s mostly rockin’ blues, and they also lean heavily on jazz influences such as Miles Davis,

TO BE IN YOUR COMPANY Les Copeland Earwig Blues on solo guitar. He gets some background singing from Cat Wells and Sari, but only on a few tracks. He dedicated the album to the memory of Honeyboy Edwards, with whom he gigged in Canada and even Europe. I don’t know if it’s kosher to call blues pretty, but by golly, Les Copeland plays some pretty blues, especially when Sari or Cat sings with him. His voice is only slightly raspy, somewhere between Taj Mahal and John Prine. The album was recorded mostly by Greg Wenger of Eon Recording Group at The Groove Studio in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. Go to www.earwigmuic.com to learn more. Or check out www.LesCopeland.com. Imagine my surprise when he broke into “Sunny Afternoon.” Dude can pick...

25 YEAR RETROSPECT Tommy McCoy Earwig This starts with “The King Is Gone” and I’ll bet you can guess which King he’s singing about. But this is not pure blues, no. McCoy has a case of blue-eyed soul too. This being a retrospective, there’s a plethora of people playing behind him, too many to list, though Ed Lanier deserves a nod for a melodic upright bass. Got a variety of styles and a lot of bent notes in this neck of the woods. It’s a double-disc set and has a lot of really great tunes, even acoustic. He gets funky, lawzy, he even bluesily covers Pink Floyd, more then credibly. He makes like rockabilly on a car song. McCoy pretty much covered the spectrum over 25 years and there’s a whole lot of it here. Reckon that’s part of the reason I enjoyed listening to it all. Cool “Blue Water” all the way. Check out the Earwig web site or go to www.tommymccoyblues.com for further information.

Buddy Guy set to play Baton Rouge Blues Festival

“I’m there every year...it’s the real deal...” ---Sharon Cook The Baton Rouge Blues Festival will be held in downtown Baton Rouge on the 9th & 10th of April. It is free to the public, as it has been since 1981. I spoke with Mr. Chris Brooks earlier this week and here is a little of what we discussed. First, the lineup will be great, with everything from local artists to a couple of big names such as Buddy Guy & Ms. Adia Victoria. Also there is a group of performers known as the Baton Rouge Music Studios which consist or local youth and performers. Sadly, this year they were unable to attend the IBC in Memphis, Tennessee but word has it they will be there next year. One of the local acts, Tank & the Bangas, played on the 20th of March for all the attendees (as well as participants) of the New Orleans 504K. They have a unique sound and I look forward to hearing them as well as all the other performers. The committee (made up of 12 - 13 people) is responsible as well as chairs. The closer it gets, the busier it is for them. This event is worked on year around. One thing I thought was really neat was how some of their volunteers are selected. Some are from different nonprofit organizations from around the area. The times depend on available slots but they always find a spot. I am going to wrap this up with 2 other things about this amazing group of people. There will be a gala in August as well as they do partner with other nonprofits for jams. So come on out and have a great time listening to some awesome music. Any questions you may have that were not answered in this small piece, please go to www.batonrougebluesfestival.org. Also look for the entire interview as well as more after I return from the event. THE SWAMP BLUES STORY Swamp blues originated in Louisiana’s capital city, gaining significant exposure in the 1950s thanks to Crowley record producer J.D. Miller. Miller distributed recordings from Baton Rouge blues artists through Nashville’s Excello Records, bringing names like “Lightnin’ Slim” and the legendary Slim Harpo onto the American music scene with hits like “Rooster Blues” and “Rainin’ In My Heart.” Swamp blues crossed the Atlantic to Europe, helping to birth the British Invasion as artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, The Kinks and Eric Clapton performed music inspired by artists Slim Harpo, Henry Gray and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. Today, legendary south Louisiana musicians like Tabby Thomas and his son Chris Thomas King, Tab Benoit, Larry Garner, Big Luther Kent, Kenny Neal and his brother Lil Ray Neal tour the globe, bringing joy to blues fans everywhere, their catchy common-man lyrics irresistibly wrapped in the rhythms of a music born to turn even the hardest times in life into a celebration. (If you want this ) Location for this year is in/around Repentance Park (FREE Family Friendly) THE BATON ROUGE BLUES FESTIVAL COMES TO LIFE Originating in 1981, the Baton Rouge Blues Festival is one of the oldest blues festivals in America, first held on the campus of Southern University. The festival honors the legend of home-grown blues artists like Slim Harpo, Rudy Richard, Silas Hogan, Whisperin’ Smith, Guitar Kelly, Schoolboy Cleve, Chewin’ Gum Johnson and Raful Neal. Expanding outside our backyard, the festival has brought in nationally and internationally recognized names like Bobby Blue Bland, Marcia Ball, Phil Guy, Larry Garner and Charlie Musselwhite - including recent Grammy-nominee Ruthie Foster, who won the hearts of festival goers in 2009. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to further their Baton Rouge blues experience beyond the festival at hangouts like Phil Brady’s (with the longest-running 21-year Thursday night blues jam around) and the inimitable Teddy’s Juke Joint in Zachary, Louisiana.

Best Of Burger - (1949 - 1998)

Things We Miss About Burger Reprinted from various editions BURGER INTERVIEWS BURGER

(originally printed July, 1988) ---Burger When Peter Read, our esteemed editor-in-chief, suggested the idea for this article, I was alternately excited and confused about the prospect of interviewing myself. But I didn’t have any idea of how to go about it. So I asked Peter and he said “don’t ask me; ask him.” So I did. Q: Is it true that you once poured a whole beer down Larry Garrison’s brand new alligator skin boots at the White Water Tavern? A: You know, I’m glad you asked me that. It just goes to show how stories like that can be exaggerated to the point of absurdity. In the first place, it was only half a beer and it was only one boot and it was made out of some poor ostrich’s skin, not an alligator. Q: Exactly how did this little altercation come about anyway? A: Well, I don’t recollect exactly, but I think he was gonna fire me again for the 50th time. I just lost my head. I barely came to my senses in time to remember to use his beer instead of mine. Besides, he hired me back as soon as his boot dried out. Q: I’m glad we got that cleared up. By the way, why are you so fat? A: Gosh, I mean, golly, that’s a fairly personal ques tion. Couldn’t we go on to something else? Q: No, I don’t think so. I think that your listening audi ence deserves an explanation. A: Okay, but it’s fairly complicated. You see, when I do any form of strenuous exercise I begin to sweat profusely all over my body. I experience extreme shortness of breath, to the point where I can barely smoke another cigarette. Afterwards, my muscles are so sore that I can hardly make it to the refrigerator for another Fudgie-Pop. And you know the sad, sad thing about this disease is that it is progressive. The older I get the worse it is. And what’s most awful is that I don’t even know the medical term for this malady. It’s so sad. But, you know, I feel better for having got all that off my chest. Would it be okay if we take a break now and have some lunch? I’m buying. Q: No...no lunch breaks. What about the rumor that you plan to changed your act? For my money, I think it’s about time. What direction do you intend to take? You know, we’re coming up on the 1990s and you aren’t getting any younger. A: Yeah...I have been givin’ it some thought. You know, through the years I’ve always done a little bit of C&W, a little bit of R&B, and a little bit of R&R. I’ve been thinking about breaking some new musical ground. I think I’ll call it CPP&F - that stands for Cow Poke Punk and Funk. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it exactly yet, but I’m pretty sure everything’s gonna be in waltz time with the bass turned up too loud. And I’ll probably wear one of those really obnoxious hats like Hoss Cartwright’s on “Bonanza.” The only thing that will remain of the old act is, of course, my bad attitude. I have high hopes for my future success. Q: Sounds like a real-real dopey idea to me. Have you thought of a name for this alleged “act” yet? A: Oh yeah, that’s the best part. I have some really good ideas on that. Lemme run some o’ these by ya and just speak up if anything moves ya. How about Buck Naked And The Lebanese Boot Scooters for the international appeal? I don’t know; it’s hard to decide. I was kinda leanin’ toward Rock Jism And The Two-Bit Redneck Peckerwoods, but I don’t know if it would fit on the marquee at Carnegie hall. You do you have to prepare for the inevitable. My last choice was thought up awhile back by Richard Allin over at the Gazette (editor’s note: now the Arkansas Democrat - Gazette)...it speaks to me

down deep...in the pit of my stomach, or maybe even lower than that...”Merkle Tewkly And The Slobbering Mad Dogs”...tho’ I’m pretty sure someone’s already snatched that one up by now. Anyway, in Sho-Biz, I figure it pays to keep up with the latest trends, so maybe I’ll use one of these names here and dye my moustache purple and zoom to the top of the charts and everything...what do you think? Q: I think you make me sick. Anyway, I’ll ask the questions. A: So don’t be so schizophrenic. Q: Am not! A: Are too! Q: Shut up! A: No, you shut up! Q: Hold it a minute...let’s get this over with. A: Okay, what else do you want to know? I’m gettin’ a little tired of this intrusion on my privacy anyway. Q: Yeah, me too. A: Let’s go to lunch. Q: You still buying? A: Yeah.

Morton Downy Burger - Politics (originally printed October, 1992)

GAMBLING WITH OUR FUTURE

Mr Abner Magby, Jr, who lived down below my Pap’s place farthest from the paved road, was a wise man and gave forth gems of knowledge for all to have for their own, if they were smart enough to know whom to heed. He knew coon dogs, water witchin’, roofin’, hog dressin’, hide curin’, meat smokin’, crawdad fishin’, and so on and on.... Mr Abner was in fact so smart that he even knew what not to talk about. One o’ those topics was the incomprehensible and numberless secrets which forever remain shrouded against even the most determined inquiries, trickeries, and investigations that the male version of humankind might aim at “its” weakest fortress point...which is a long way of sayin’ that men are incapable of figurin’ out women, so only a fool would try. His other weak point in a virtually pristine pool of general knowledge and specific information was horse racin’...Mr Abner said, “In most matters a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, but where horse racin’s concerned, there ain’t but one piece of knowledge necessary to come to a full comprehension of the sport in its entirety and this is it: The only way for a horse race to be 100% fair and square is for only the horses to be in on it. If a human gets involved, the horses can’t get to the starting gate without the ‘fix’ is in. That’s all you gotta know about horse racin’ to never lose a nickel at it.” And that’s all he’d say about the “Sport of Kings.” Mr Abner was human, however, and while being unafflicted with any of the major failings associated with that species, he did have a minor human flaw or two. He chewed, though he was not sloppy, even Miz Magby said so...and he would often forget to wind his watch, which put him late a lot of the time...and he liked to gamble...a lot...on anything (except horses), anytime...but most particularly, he liked to gamble politics. Every election he went at it hot ‘n’ heavy and he did pretty well...stayed about even in fact. But here’s the point to all the talk about Mr Abner Magby, Jr, the smartest man from down there close to Pap’s place: When it came to politics, he wouldn’t take his own good advice...it’s a race, just like horses, but there’s human beings in on it, so even if there’s an honest vote count, even if nobody swaps a vote for a jug o’ wine or a buck or two, by the time the racers get to the startin’ line, the fix is in. Even a man with a wide streak of gumption, ethics, and character is prone to get overfed before post time and that affects the race. Somebody is either overfeedin’ the ego, givin’ him medicine he’d do better without, or distractin’ him by runnin’ a prime mare by him (or stallion, as the case may be). This kind of thing affects the race, be it among man or beast. Here’s my two cents’ worth: Take old man Abner Magby, Jr’s wisdom to heart...bet on the horse that’s got the cleanest lines, ain’t been overfed, and isn’t easily distracted by urges of a baser nature. Then if the nag’s got good spirit and keeps straight on the track, he may be a winner...but don’t bet money on a race that’s got humans in on it, ‘cause that kinda race has got the fix in on it before the runners even get to the line.

Elise Davis

SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST 2016 ---Bonnie Montgomery I’ve been heading down to Austin a lot the last few years, so on the drive down for SXSW 2016, I was prepared for the worst of traffic situations. But just like always, about an hour outside Austin, the clouds parted and that Texas landscape shimmered and shined upon me. Austin’s been kind to me and I just love that glittering city silhouette as I’m driving in, even if it is for a festival that’s become so big it’s a little hard to navigate. I had a good time playing with my Austin based band for the 6 shows we had throughout the week. The vibe was really fun - the usual faces of the Austin music scene plus a lot of out-of- towners who are there to soak in new music. We played several of our usual haunts, some of them official venues and others not. The White Horse was particularly fun during the day party we played on the Friday of the festival. That place is magic and always feels a little like heaven - an endless circle through swinging doors and dance floors. We really kicked up some dust there. We also played at Black Heart on the wild and county-fair-esque Rainey Street and a fantastic Keep Austin Country showcase at Buzzmill. As far as being an audience member, I was able to catch several good showcases and national touring acts that were really great. I went to the official showcase for New West records to hear my honkytonk soul brother, Jason James. Simply put, he’s country music royalty - a true Texas baritone with beautifully crafted country songs and poetry that really resonates. He has a star quality that you can see from miles away. I’ll stand by Jason and his songs ‘til the very end and I hope to share the stage with him in the future. Y’all should check out his self-titled record if you like true blue country music with a strong and classic male vocalist who was born to do it. After Jason, an amazing ensemble from Saskatchewan, Kacy and Clayton, took the stage. They were phenomenal and the lead singer, Kacy, had one of the most angelic and beautiful voices I’ve heard in a long time, especially in the genre of country/indie/folk. She was really singing out and had a beautiful vibrato that reminded me of Joan Baez. The bassist was really innovative too, playing a hollow-body bass in a real 60’s style. The guitarist was pretty great too--the tones on his Gibson SG were so biting and aggressive while he was playing folky Byrds-like riffs. I really loved their sound and their vibe. One of my favorite new bands! After the New West showcase, I used my magic Nightflying pass (thank you Peter!!) to get into Antone’s to see my fellow Arkansan, Miss Elise Davis, play her showcase and warm the crowd up for Leon Russell. Elise is a friend of mine and I was just thrilled to see her in the SXSW environment. Her sound has evolved so beautifully since I last saw her. She’s always written really catchy melodies and her poetry is universal, but she’s added a sultry blues element to her performance alongside some jam-band vibes too. Her sound is beautiful and so is she. She’s one to watch! After that, of course Leon Russell just grooved and rocked like the legend that he is and the crowd was on fire. It was a magical night. I was also able to see Corb Lund at a daytime showcase at Maria’s Tacos and he was impressive too. His band was whip-tight and the songs were country music at it’s best great storytelling and great vocals. It was the first time I have seen him live after listening to his records for a few years. Canadian country at it’s best! I also shared the bill with Aaron McDonnell at my Keep Austin Country showcase and whew, what a voice and what great songs! We move in the same country music circles, so it was good to see his live show and strike up a friendship. Truly great country music and the originals are very well crafted! I also shared the stage with Kathryn Legendre out of Austin. She is another great female country musician and as genuine and sweet as they come. I’m happy to be a part of Austin’s country community because of friendships like these! The Keep Austin Country movement is very cool and I’m glad the gals who run it include this crazy Razorback in their outfit.

God’s Orderly World Why do we enjoy listening to music and playing music? Just look around you. There is order in all God’s creation. Cut an orange in half and look at the sections. Examine any flower closely. God is orderly in all that He does. And remember, He created all of us “in His image.” So we all are creative in one or more ways. When we see a beautiful landscape or tree we see the handiwork of our Creator. And we duplicate God’s orderliness in our own creations. Buildings, music compositions, artwork, sculpture, even creative writing. Most living creatures are symmetrical, like us. That means that the right side of our body is a mirror image of the left side. God likes orderly arrangement in all things. When we play the A note above middle C on a piano, it produces a tone that has 440 cycles or sound waves per second, striking our eardrums. If we play the A next A to the right, higher up the keyboard, we hear 880 cycles. The A below 440 (to the left) produces 220. All the other notes in between produce their own number of cycles per second and are mathematically correct. That’s also true on the guitar: the 3rd string, 2nd fret produces A-440. Pythagoras discovered when you stop a bow-string at the halfway point, and pluck each of the 2 halves, you hear the same note as when you pluck it without stopping it, but 8 tones (1 “octave”) higher. That’s why the 12th fret on your stringed instrument is exactly halfway along the course of the string. When we hear music, our God-given subconscious mind admires and appreciates the orderliness of it. If we make the music ourselves, then we appreciate it even more. Why does a “chord” sound pleasant to us? A C chord is made up of the notes C, E and G. When we play a low C note on any instrument, we hear the note, but (here it gets weird,) you also are hearing what is known as the “overtone tower.” Subconsciously, we hear the octave C, the G or 5th above that, the C and G above that and so on. The 6th overtone (#7 below) is Bb. If we move on up the overtone tower, we will encounter ALL 12 notes of the chromatic scale. They are all there, in any single not we play, just as white is the presence of all color, and black is the absence. So when we hear a C-E-G, we’re hearing the orderly arrangement of the “overtones” reinforced and made stronger. When a bass player in a band plays a low note, the overtone tower is out there and all the other instruments, even the singers, are reinforcing the overtones! And that is all going on in our subconscious mind. We find it so pleasant, we even pay huge prices for tickets to live performances of our favorite music. 32 degrees of the “Overtone Tower”

CeDell Davis was born in Helena, Arkansas in 1927. Despite being struck with both yellow fever and polio as a child, CeDell had just started playing guitar when the polio struck, but he learned, through his own ingenuity and sheer grit, how to use a butter knife to fret the strings in place of his gnarled hands. In doing so, he pioneered the butter knife technique that many slide players imitate today. Starting his professional career in 1952 playing guitar and bass with Robert Nighthawk, CeDell eventually began a solo career that has included a recording debut with the fabled Blues label Fat Possum Records that was attended by Mick Jagger and Yoko Ono, festival appearances around the world and two sold-out European tours. Damon Fowler Guitarist and vocalist for Butch Trucks (of Allman Brothers fame...) and the Freight Train, Damon Fowler is bringing his Blues trio based out of Tampa, Florida. At least twice a year I make a musical pilgrimage to Memphis. Well, really, it’s a blues music pilgrimage. I attend the International Blues Challenge in late January and the Blues Music Awards in early May. To say I attend these events is a bit misleading. I’m there, but, I’m usually working my ass off at both events. I’ve been volunteering at these events for a number of years now. I’m sure I could count them if I concentrated hard enough. But, who wants to do that? I’ve been hosting a venue during the International Blues Challenge for close to a decade now, maybe longer. I’ve had the opportunity to host in the historic Daisy Theater, aka the Old Daisy, a term that pisses off the owners of the place. For the past few years I’ve hosted at Flynn’s, right in the middle of all the action of Beale Street. Hosting a venue at the IBC is a job that I have come to enjoy and look forward to each year. Some of the old time volunteers and a few of my friends think I’m nuts for wanting to do this. I can’t help it. I love being a part of the event and I love hosting the venues. Being the host, or venue coordinator, involves working with the Blues Foundation, the venue and the artists; overseeing a team that helps run the venue with me; and getting to meet the fans. I like being a part of an event like the IBC. The work doesn’t bother me. In fact, for me, it’s a lot of fun. The big piece, though, is getting to meet the people. Getting to meet the performers and the fans. I’ve been privileged to meet some of the finest people I’ve ever known because of working this event. I have forged friendships that are still in place today. Because of the relationships I’ve made through this event there are few places in this country I can travel and not find an acquaintance. In fact, that is a running joke with my co-workers and my family. It’s not uncommon for me to travel on business and run into people I’ve met in Memphis. This year’s IBC was no different. I met people from Maine, California, Germany, the Phillipines and Nebraska, to name just a few. One of my favorite stories from this year’s event comes from the leader of the band Lampano Alley from the Phillipines. The lead singer is a fellow that goes by Mr. Lampano. Prior to introducing them for their set, I asked him a few questions about the band…where are you from in the Phillipines? The reply was ‘All over. Just tell them we’re from Manila. They’ve probably heard of that.’ After a chuckle, I asked if they were all from Manila. Mr. Lampano replied a smile, ‘They are (nodding toward the band). Me, I’m from LA. Hey, nobody’s perfect.’ To which I replied ‘Is that eastern LA?’ I don’t know if that pissed him off or made him laugh. I thought it was funny. Working several years in the same venue I’ve come to know a few of the staff. Flynn’s is a cool place with a good crew. Chris Gales, who performs regularly himself, is my sound man, assisted by Kwan. Yep, Kwan. Just one name. Both of these cats are aces in my book. They work hard to make the acts sound good and they do a great job. I always look forward to seeing them at the IBC and I make it a point to stop in if I’m there for other events. As with any group you spend time with, you get to know them personally and you come to appreciate who they are in the bigger scheme of life. This year I noticed the regular door man at Flynn’s, a big, quiet guy named Malone, was conspicuously missing. When I asked about him I was told he had passed away suddenly over the summer. While I wasn’t close with him, I knew Malone and I knew I could count him as a friend. He rarely smiled and didn’t say much but he was a good man. A few years ago during the IBC, I was thanking people from the stage in Flynn’s. I always try to shout out to the staff to give them recognition for their work. When I had finished, I took a break and walked outside to see what was shaking on Beale Street. As I came back in Malone stopped me and said ‘You forgot about me.’ What do you mean, I asked back. ‘You thanked everyone else in here but you forgot about me.’ Talk about feeling bad! From then on for that IBC and for

every one since, I made damned sure I recognized my door man, Malone. I was truly saddened to learn of his passing. Whether he knew it or not, Malone was a part of my extended blues family and his death took a little piece of me. For this year’s IBC, I had the opportunity to work backstage at the finals in the Orpehum Theater. I go to watch all sixteen finals acts perform from the best seat in the house. I also got to speak to most of the acts that competed. The Mighty Orq, Bobby Blackhat and his band, Norman Jackson and Rick Shortt from the Norman Jackson Band, the Delgado Brothers and all the rest. I got to hear stories about how these acts got to Memphis, the work they put in playing and raising the money to make the trip and, in many cases, their surprise at making it to the finals. Of course, I also got to cut up with a couple friends from Little Rock, Jason Willmon and Trey Johnson. Always a lot of fun. The best part of all of it was making new friends.

It may be in passing or it may be lifelong. Either way, it was a chance to meet people from somewhere else, talk to them, share life with them. Share their experience with them. I saw the thrill and surprise of winning and I witnessed the disappointment of losing. The thing about the acts who didn’t win or place was they weren’t all that upset. They found the silver lining in the event and the fact they were one of the last eight standing in their category (solo/duo or band). The spirit of the competition was that everyone who made it to Memphis had already won. And certainly making it to the finals validated that. But, you know folks, those are the things that make working an event like the IBC meaningful to me. It’s not about who wins or loses. It’s not about meeting the big names. It’s not about ego. It’s about relationships. Finding them, cultivating them, maintaining them. Appreciating the moment, savoring it, and knowing you have connections that may last a few days but will more than likely endure a lifetime. That’s why I like being there, why I like working the event. We don’t get along in this life by ourselves, regardless of how independent we may think we are. As Bob Margolin once told me, ‘We’re all in this shit together.” Indeed we are, Bob. Indeed we are. A mother-in-law stopped by unexpectedly the recently married couple’s house. She knocks on the door, then immediately walks in. She is shocked to see her daughter-in-law lying on the couch, totally naked. “What are you doing?” she asked. “I’m waiting for Jeff to come home from work,” the daughter-in-law answered. “But you’re naked!” the mother-in-law exclaimed. “This is my love dress,” the daughter-in-law explained. “Love dress? But you’re naked!” “Jeff loves me to wear this dress! It makes him happy and it makes me happy.” The mother-in-law on the way home thought about the love dress. When she got home she got undressed, showered, put on her best perfume and expectantly waited for her husband, lying provocatively on the couch. Finally her husband came home. He walked in and saw her naked on the couch. “What are you doing?” he asked. “This is my love dress,” she replied. “Needs ironing,” he says” “What’s for dinner?” A guy meets a gal in a bar and asks, “May I buy you a drink?” “Okay. But it won’t do you any good.” A little later, he asks, “May I buy you another drink?” “Okay. But it won’t do you any good.” He invites her up to his apartment and she replies, “Okay. But it won’t do you any good.” They get to his apartment and he says, “You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I want you for my wife.” She says, “Oh, that’s different. Send her in…” A little girl wants to walk her dog, but her father says that she can’t because the dog is in heat. After a moment’s thought, he finally says, “Well, I guess, if we pour gas on the dog’s rear end it will kill the scent.” So he does. Half an hour later, the girl returns. The father says, “Where’s the dog?” The girl replies,”She ran out of gas half a block down the street, and the neighbor’s dog is pushing her home.” WHY MEN ARE SELDOM DEPRESSED: Your last name stays put. The garage is all yours. Wedding plans take care of themselves. Chocolate is just another snack. You can be President. You can never be pregnant. You can wear a white T-shirt to a water park. You can wear NO shirt to a water park. Car mechanics tell you the truth. The world is your urinal. You never have to drive to another gas station restroom because this one is just too icky. You don’t have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress: $5000. Tux rental: $100. People never stare at your chest when you’re talking to them. New shoes don’t cut, blister, or mangle your feet. One mood all the time. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. You know stuff about tanks. A five-day vacation requires only one suitcase. You can open all your own jars. You get extra credit for the slightest act of thoughtfulness. If someone forgets to invite you, he or she can still be your friend. Your underwear is $8.95 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. You almost never have strap problems in public. You are unable to see wrinkles in your clothes. Everything on your face stays its original color. The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades. You only have to shave your face and neck. You can play with toys all your life. One wallet and one pair of shoes -- one color for all seasons. You can wear shorts no matter how your legs look. You can ‘do’ your nails with a pocket knife. You have freedom of choice concerning growing a mustache. You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24 in 25 minutes. No wonder men are happier. WHY MEN ARE JUST HAPPIER PEOPLE NICKNAMES • If Sheila, Candy and Sarah go out for lunch, they will call each other Sheila, Candy, and Sarah.

NIGHTFLYING • RITES OF SPRING • 2016

• If Mike, Dave and John go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Bubba, and Wildman… EATING OUT • When the bill arrives, Mike, Dave and John will each throw in $20, even though it’s only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. • When the girls get their bill, out come the pocket calculators. MONEY • A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. • A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn’t need but it’s on sale. BATHROOMS • A man has six items in his bathroom: toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel. • The average number of items in the typical woman’s bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify more than 20 of these items. ARGUMENTS • A woman has the last word in any argument. • Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument. FUTURE • A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. • A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. MARRIAGE • A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn’t. • A man marries a woman expecting that she won’t change, but she does. DRESSING UP • A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the trash, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. • A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. NATURAL • Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. • Women somehow deteriorate during the night. OFFSPRING • Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams. • A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house. A married man should forget his mistakes. There’s no use in two people remembering the same thing… THE PREACHER AND THE MUSIC DIRECTOR There was a church where the preacher and the minister of music were not getting along. As time went by this began to spill over into the worship service. The first week the preacher preached on commitment and how we all should dedicate ourselves to the service of God. The music director lead the song, “I Shall not be Moved.” The second week the preacher preached on tithing and how we all should gladly give to the work of the Lord. The director lead the song, “Jesus Paid it All.” The third week the preacher preached on gossiping and how we should all watch our tongues. The music director led the song, “I Love to Tell the Story.” With all this going on, the preacher became very disgusted over the situation and the following Sunday told the congregation that he was considering resigning. The musician lead the song, “Oh Why Not Tonight?” As it came to pass, the preacher did indeed resign. The next week he informed the church that it was Jesus who led him there and it was Jesus that was taking him away. The music leader led the song, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” CAB DRIVER AND THE PREACHER A cab driver reaches the Pearly Gates and announces his presence to St.Peter, who looks him up in his Big Book. Upon reading the entry for the cabby, St. Peter invites him to grab a silk robe and a golden staff and to proceed into Heaven. A preacher is next in line behind the cabby and has been watching these proceedings with interest. He announces himself to St. Peter. Upon scanning the preacher’s entry in the Big Book, St. Peter furrows his brow and says, “Okay, we’ll let you in, but take that cloth robe and wooden staff.” The preacher is astonished and replies, “But I am a man of the cloth. You gave that cab driver a gold staff and a silk robe. Surely I rate higher than a cabby.” St. Peter responded quite matter-of-factly: “Here we are interested in results. When you preached, people slept. When the cabby drove his taxi, people prayed.” A TRUE SUPER BOWL WIFE A woman sat down at her seat on the 50-yard line for the Super Bowl. A man came along and asked her if anyone was sitting in the seat next to her. “No,” she said, “the seat is empty.” “This is incredible,” said the man. “Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event in the world, and not use it?” Somberly, the woman says, “Well...the seat belongs to my husband. He and I were to come here together, but he passed away. This is the first Super Bowl we have not been to together since we got married in ‘57.” “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. That’s terrible. But couldn’t you find someone else - a friend or relative or even a neighbor to take the seat?” The woman shakes her head, “No, they’re all at the funeral…” HORSES DON’T SMOKE “On July 15 Koichi prefectural horse racing officials imposed a 30-day ban on a horse after a July 3 post-race urine sample had turned up high levels of caffeine, which is prohibited as a performance enhancing substance. But the horse owners adamantly proclaimed their innocence saying they had not doped their horse. High levels of nicotine in the sample created additional suspicion. Two weeks later, officials issued an apology after the employee who took the sample admitted that he had topped off the container with his own urine because the horse had not given very much and he was in a hurry...” A little boy asked his mother: - Mummy, why are you white and I am black? - Don’t even ask me that, when I remember that party...you’re lucky you don’t bark... What does it say on a blues player’s gravestone? A: I didn’t wake up this morning...

LEO (July 23-August 22) It is said that those born under the Leonion banner have a remarkable inborn ability to repulse fleas, crabs, ear-mites, and other common body parasites, owing to a sticky and malodorous excretion which also enables the Leo to identify those of his/her ilk at 500 yards, though they possess only an average sense of smell…

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Not since the beginning of time has the world known a group of individuals so...ept at being inept...Wherever you might see lopsided architecture...Wherever you see baseball teams with ten players on the field...Wherever you see a football coach send a one-legged kicking specialist into the game, look no further...for in these places you will find the lowly Aries.......

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) The sign identified by the bull....So be it...for they are the most full of it. The Taurus is often automatically disqualified from liars contests, on the grounds that contestants be strictly amateurs...unfortunately, the trait which might make another person, e. g. a renowned writer of great fiction is nothing more than a dead giveaway revealing the Taurus as one who whose BS cup truly runneth over…

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Words can but poorly describe the wonder of those blessed to be Gemini...fair of face and temper are they...gracious in all things....Honor and a sense of fair play are penultimate to an unquestioned, faultlessly lived life of unerring humility. My God! cried all the lesser signs, ‘Tis woeful beyond measure to fall short of the glory that is Gemini...oh woe and alas, alack, and yuk…

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Thou much has been said about those unfortunates whose ill favor it is to fall under Cancerian sway...let us now count the positive attributes of the Cancer: 1. Their sign’s name is easy to spell. 2. No one waits in line at the office of “Change Your Sign of the Zodiac, Legally” place. No one masquerades as a Cancer except to get sympathy…

VIRGO (August 23-September 22) The Virgo invariably sees himself (herself) as God’s gift to the opposite sex. Their incessant banter, invariably about themselves, sends all members of both genders scurrying to any place away from the Virgo. When asked to identify his most positive quality, the Virgo always will stutter and spit and mumble and look confused. For the self-involved Virgo this question alone leaves him/her speechless for once in his/her life, for alas, the Virgo can never pick just one...

LIBRA (September 23-October 22) It is the Libra who most often says “I don’t care if Haley’s Comet only comes around every zillion years I’ve got to get home in time for ‘Pee Wee’s Fun House’ or I’ll break out in hives.” Ah yes, the Libra is widely known for his or her lack of maturity and failure to grasp a reasonable world view. E. g. “You guys can keep up with Operation Desert Shield if you want to; I’m goin’ to go get some gas in my car and ride around....That stuff’s got nothing to do with me...”

SCORPIO (October 23-November 21) “Shake it but don’t break it” cries the Scorpio.... “Wrap it up and I’ll take it!” wails the Scorpio at the class reunion dance. But alas, the Scorpio is just as big a geek at the dance now as he was in high school and college...no problem for the Scorpio, master of self-deception. They also comb their remaining hair back around and over their bald spots while cleverly declaring “At least I’ve still got my hair.” But the ever-blowing wind reveals the lie...or the truth...poor deluded Scorpio...o....

SAGITTARIUS (November 22-December 21) The Sagittarius punches every button going past after the elevator reaches his floor. He puts a tack in your air. He has a joy-buzzer in his hand and a dribble-glass on the table... but try as he will, the Sagittarius is not funny. Witness the fact that he laughs alone at these sophomoric pranks. The Sag is also not very smart, for though he is often beaten severely and ostracized by his fellows, he continues with his lame attempts to gain approval, never once recognizing that having one’s ass beaten regularly results only in having a perpetually sore ass and is never considered a sign of approval…

CAPRICORN (December 22-January 19) Rhymes with scorn, mourn, forlorn, ill-born, care-worn, nose like a herald horn. Try as we may, not one redeeming quality presents itself when the Capricorn comes into consideration. In fact it is said that in days of old, the murning morning breath of a Capricorn caused stuttering and palsy in Mormons and Seventh Day Adventists…

AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18) George Washington was not an Aquarius; neither was Abe Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Albert Schweitzer, or Sister Theresa. In fact, nobody that is anybody or ever did anything was an Aquarian....I’ll tell you who was though: Lil Abner, Billy the Kid, Judas Iscariot, John Wilkes Booth, Attilla the Hun, Vlad the Impaler, the Marquis de Sade, Lizzy Borden...all those good folks were Aquarians and SO are you…har har har…

PISCES (February 19-March 20) Last but not least comes Pisces, the sign responsible for the saying “There’s something fishy in Finland.” For it was the Piscean elders of those frozen lands who fostered the frigid female. Not all Piscean women are frigid though, just the pretty ones, who actually are very few and far between…

Dear Flabby Dear Comrade Flabby, I am writing to you from USSR (or what is left of USSR) where, as you probably know, there is great change taking place in our “way of life.” My family lives on (formerly) state-owned hog, beet, and cabbage farm in state of Georgia. I understand that you have similar state in your country and your working class is in many ways similar to ours. Our way of life will soon be changed and we have little idea of what to expect. We have never voted on our leadership in any real way and have decided to look to you for advice in choosing people who will represent us in government. What do you suggest we look for as to qualities desirable in our political leaders? signed, Ivan and Boys Georgia, USSR Dear Ivan, Thanks for writing...see if any of these tips help: 1. When candidates are asked direct questions, look for direct answers. If their responses sound like they didn’t understand the question, don’t vote for them; they’re either stupid or they’re avoiding the issue. 2. Beware the candidate who never says “I don’t know.” 3. Avoid candidates who make promises. 4. Vote for candidates who say “I will try to....” 5. Never vote for a candidate who has more bad to say about his opponent than he has good to say for himself. 6. Don’t be suckered in by a person who represents special inter-est groups...you may not be among those in his next group of “special interests.” 7. Always vote. signed, A Watchful Flabby
