You know horses are smarter than people. You never heard of a horse going broke betting on people… –Will Rogers It has struck me that NF is now more personal in ways…I hope you don’t mind, but we now come directly to you in person (well, in phone, anyway)… true, you can’t really line your birdcage with it anymore or the litter box…and swatting flies is definitely not an option with your device, granted. But since you can read it wherever you have a signal (in the world!), and beyond that, unlike print, you can use your device to actually hear the bands instead of just reading about them in print…it remains a major change for us here at the Nightflying compound, and we are getting more and more used to it. In many ways, before we had to essentially live with the typos all month long…now, when we see them we can fix it! Ah, the mysteries of technology! Remember all the hoopla about the Mayan calendar back in 2012? How the entire world was going to change? What if I told you it wasn’t the Mayan calendar at all? I’ve been informed that it was actually the first day of the Age Of Aquarius, and because of the technology, the world has become a level-playing field! And so it seems, too. With my ‘smarterthan-me device’ I can actually go study in the Library Of Congress! And because of the internet I essentially have access to virtually all known knowledge… I can speak to over 1/8th of the world’s population! (Not that many of them really have anything to say, mind you…) It’s a wondrous age we’re living in I tell you… This has thus far been a very weird Summer in our opinion. Several of the big festivals haven’t happened, of course, and the weather has been absolutely mind-blowingly horrible. Arkansas, officially considered subtropical, has been fully tropical…several thunderstorms each day, with bright and excrutiatingly hot spells between them. Mosquitos that can carry off your neighbors, and lawns that can’t be kept
mowed…ours got as tall as we are…which is not very tall, mind you, but you get my drift… In particular……. But still, the music goes on and before long the beauty of Autumn in the Altered State will once again bring relief. Coming right up is the Hot Springs Blues Festival. This year it has moved back to Bath House Row from Oaklawn as it was for a decade or more. This year should be a great one, too, with all the fantastic artists planned. On the bill are The Delgado Brothers, Noah Wotherspoon, Barbara Blue, Cedell Davis, Brethren, Stuart Baer & Lance Womack,The Big Chiller Blues Band, Trey Johnson & Jason Willmon, Unseen Eye and the Spa City Youngbloods. The same time the Hot Springs Jazzfest will happen in various venues. Look for shows featuring Rodney Block Jazz Collective, Clyde Pound Trio, The Diva Chicks, David Higginbotham, Paul Stivitts, The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s Brass Quartet, Anything That Moves, Earl Hesse. Diand Kesling, Don Gooch, Great American Slide Show, Subiaco Academy High School Jazz Band, Henderson State Univesity’s NuFusio, U of A Monticello’s Jazz Band with Patrick Hession, Brass-A-Holics of New Orleans, Chris Parker, Bill Huntington, Jay Payette, Shelley Martin, Matt Dickson, Gary Meggs, Ron Hall, Bill Hickman, Paul Stivitts, Stardust, and a lot more. Also coming up is the Eureka Springs Jazz Fest, on September 8 through 11…see the feature story elsewhere in this edition…but this year it will be most special. (It always is, mind you…) This year it will feature the Brubeck Brothers Quartet performing a much deserved tribute to their father Dave Brubeck, one of the most prominent jazz music officionados. The infamous club has been soaking up live music for nearly 50 years. Fact is that illustrious Hot Springs, Arkansas, was playing under the table in those days…the town was famous for it’s casino action of course, and the good folks of the area were very much a different bunch of their own rules so-to-speak… So. During Prohibition there was a false wall as you entered the Ohio. The ones who knew would bypass that wall and head upstairs to the bar and gaming room. There, of course, they would party hard in every way possible. Al Capone, of course, hung out in Hot Springs often, back in its casino gambling days. He claimed it was “for the water,” referring to the natural hot baths. The Ohio has music 7 days a week. Every Sunday is Larry Womack and Jacquiline, Mondays features the John Calvin Brewer Band, Tuesday is Legacy Duo, Wednesdays is Hump Night Blues Band, Thursdays is for live jazz, and weekends feature the house band, The Ohio Club Players.

Choctaw Casino strikes a jackpot... Autumn roster deals golden cards ---Peter Read Choctaw Casino enters Autumn with a heady roster of artists set to appear. In addition to their regular presentation of local and regional talent each weekend, the casino has a heady schedule of national and internationally famous artists on the bill. Appearing on September 16 will be Sir Mix-A-Lot, bringing his superbly developed rap to Pocola, Oklahoma. Mix-A-Lot co-founded his own record label, promoted his music himself, produced all his own tracks, and essentially pulled himself up by the proverbial American bootstraps. Mix-A-Lot was a platinum-selling album artist with a strong following in the hip-hop community, known for bouncy, danceable, bass-heavy tracks indebted to old-school electro. Sir Mix-A-Lot was born Anthony Ray in Seattle on August 12, 1963. An eclectic music fan but a rabid hip-hop devotee, he was already actively rapping in the early ’80s, and co-founded the Nastymix record label in 1983 with his DJ, Nasty Nes, who also hosted Seattle’s first hip-hop radio show. Uncle Kracker will appear October 8th. An American musician, singer, lyricist, rapper and guitarist, he is the turntablist for Kid Rock’s backing group Twisted Brown Trucker and since 2000 has recorded as a solo artist. His singles “Follow Me” and “Drift Away” were top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Double Wide was Uncle Kracker‘s first solo album. Released on June 30, 2000, it peaked at Number 7 on the Billboard 200 album chart and is Kracker’s most successful and highest-selling album. Produced by Kid Rock, the first single taken off the album was “Follow Me“, peaked at Number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2001. The album spent the next ten months on the Billboard 200, and “Follow Me“ also had a long chart run. Double Wide was certified 2 MultiPlatinum on November 29, 2001.
Collective Soul And, in 2004, that label El Music Group released the dynamic album Youth. From the Ground Up (2005) and Home (2006) were also released under the El Music Group label, along with a DVD featuring their live concert with the Atlanta City Youth Orchestra. In 2007, the band teamed with Target to be the exclusive retailer for the band’s next album Afterwords, from Roadrunner Records. This arrangement was one of the first such exclusive album release deals to be made by a band with a sole retailer. In 2008, Collective Soul found themselves on the soundtrack for the film Twilight with “Tremble for My Beloved” from Dosage. Following the film’s success, the song’s exposure earned Collective Soul new popularity and connected with a younger audience. Collective Soul released their self-titled eighth studio album in 2009. The single “Staring Down” charted at #18 on Billboard‘s Adult Top 40. The album debuted at #24 on the Billboard 200 and the single “You” also charted on the Billboard Adult Top 40. In 2001, Dolly Parton won a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance with her cover version of “Shine”. In further recognition of their artistic achievement, Collective Soul was inducted into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2009. Additionally, as the principal songwriter for the group, Roland was individually inducted as a songwriter in 2014. Collective Soul will appear live on October 29 at Choctaw. Born during the rise of grunge and alternative rock, Collective Soul broke into mainstream popularity when they rose to international fame in 1993 with the rock anthem “Shine.” The multi-platinum quintet has been making music for two decades since then and has a catalog of #1 hits under their belts. Collective Soul helped shape and define alternative rock with lots of guitars and attitude. Collective Soul was formed in the small town of Stockbridge, Ga., in the early 1990’s. The group consists of principal songwriter and frontman Ed Roland (lead vocals/keyboards/guitars), Dean Roland (rhythm guitarist), Will Turpin (bassist), Johnny Rabb (drummer) and Jesse Triplett (lead guitarist). The band’s debut album Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid was originally released in 1993 on Atlanta indie label Rising Storm. The album was a collection of Ed Roland’s demos that spread like fire through the college circuit and the popularity of the album locally spurred Atlantic to pick it up for a major-label release. “Shine” quickly became the rock anthem played across the country on radio and on MTV and set the band up for an arena tour with Aerosmith. Their self-titled second album was a triple platinum production and would define their sound with guitar-driven songs and passionate vocals. Collective Soul’s fifth album, Blender, was released in 2000 and, according to Rolling Stone, “simply shreds with unapologetic classic-rock energy.” The album went gold and produced smash hits including “Why, Part 2,” “Vent,” and duet with Elton John “Perfect Day.” The band released a greatest hits collection in 2001 entitled 7even Year Itch: Greatest Hits 1994-2001. Following that album, Collective Soul recognized the music industry was evolving and was one of the first bands to create their own label to have more independence and control over their sound.
Moving on into the fall, superstar Lee Ann Womack will appear at the casino on Saturday, November 19. Womack is an American country music singer and songwriter. Her 2000 single, “I Hope You Dance” was a major crossover music hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Country Chart and the Top 15 of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her signature song. When Womack emerged as a contemporary country artist in 1997, her material resembled that of Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton, only Womack’s music mixed an old fashioned style with contemporary elements. Her 2000 album I Hope You Dance had an entirely different sound, using pop music elements instead of traditional country. With the release of There’s More Where That Came From in 2005, Womack returned to recording traditional country music. As of 2016, Womack has released a total of six studio albums and two compilations. Four of her studio albums have received a Gold certification or higher. The Squirrel Nut Zippers
Legendary band to descend upon North Little Rock ---Charles Ragsdell & Peter Read The Four Quarter Bar is excited to be presenting The Squirrel Nut Zippers on Saturday, September 17. The ticketed show will run $35, a bargain for this exciting off-the-wall band’s appearance. Describing the Squirrel Nut Zippers would be difficult, but to say ‘unique’ would be a true misnomer. It was about 20 years ago when NPR’s Morning Edition said: “It’s not easy to categorize the music of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, except that it’s hot.” The band was founded by James “Jimbo” Mathus and his then-wife Katharine Whalen in Carrboro, North Carolina along with Tom Maxwell, Chris Phillips, Don Raleigh and Ken Mosher. The group made its debut in Chapel Hill a few months later. Stacy Guess (formerly of Pressure Boys) joined shortly after. The Zippers’ sound incorporates a broad range of music, ranging in influence from Harlem Hot Music, Cab Calloway, Johnny Ace, Delta Blues, Raymond Scott, Fats Waller, Django Reinhardt, Tom Waits, and klezmer. The band’s break-through single, “Hell”, was distinguished by calypso rhythms, and helped push the band into further association with the “Neo Swing” movement. Songs from the band’s first album, The Inevitable were played on National Public Radio in the US. The band’s next studio album, Perennial Favorites also received critical acclaim. Also released in 1998 was Christmas Caravan, a Christmas-themed album. The band then recorded Bedlam Ballroom in 1999, after touring. The band performed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, on Prairie Home Companion, President Clinton’s second inaugural ball, Comedy Central’s Viva Variety, and major television shows including The Tonight Show, Late Show with David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. The band even was considered by Disney to do a song for The Little Mermaid, but sadly Disney passed. For the next couple of years, the Zippers went largely inactive. Mathus and Whalen divorced, royalty issues split the band, and other projects got in the way. Despite the band’s challenges, their music was kept in the public’s ear. Several of their songs were featured in the Tony Award winning Broadway play Contact. Their music was featured in several movies and TV shows, and the band performed on Sesame Street. Mathis toured with Buddy Guy, then formed a new

band, Knocked Down Society. He also built a recording studio in Clarksdale, Mississippi’s Alcazar Hotel where he has recorded hundreds of artists, including Elvis Costello. He eventually moved the studio to Como, Mississippi. Chris Phillips spent two years playing with the Dickies, as well as William Reid from the Jesus and Mary Chain. Chris’s side band, The
another go, and did a tour of America and Canada through 2008. A recording of their December 2008 show was released as Lost At Sea in 2009. In 2010, they performed at NPR’s Mountain Stage, and announced a new studio album was in the works, but it evidently got shelved as one was never released. Jimbo continued doing solo projects, as
Lamps, included members of the Bangles and The Connells. Chris also was the composer for the Comedy Central television show Lil’ Bush. In 2007 the band decided to give it

Coalition recorded a couple of albums for Memphis International Records at Delta Recording Services prior to Mathus closing the studio in 2012. Mathus then recorded five albums for the venerable Fat Possum label as well as his own Big Legal Mess label. Mathus also joined British bluesman Ian Siegal on a tour, performing at clubs and festivals around the world. The band recently announced that 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the Squirrel Nut Zippers most celebrated and commercially successful album Hot. Originally released in the summer of 1996, Hot was the follow up to the band’s critically acclaimed debut The Inevitable. By this time the group had already established a substantial live following across the country thanks to early support from NPR, college radio and noncommercial stations. Hot wound up selling over 1.3 million copies. A newly re-mastered version of the album along with a bonus track: “The Puffer” returned to stores Friday, July 29th, 2016 on Hollywood Records. Long out of print on vinyl, Hot will make its glorious return to wax on 180-gram vinyl. The Squirrel Nut Zippers recently performed their first set of tour dates since 2009 which included a performance at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. The band has now added a fall tour to their upcoming 2016 touring plans including new stops in Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Nashville, Durham, Greensboro and many others. “We are humbled and incredibly excited by the initial Zippers shows since the re-launch last month,” band leader Jimbo Mathus commented. “The experience is not to be missed! I Like It All Akeem Kemp Indie This is a rocking bluesy record produced by a local young artist. I’d heard him live a couple times and was mindblown by his naturally superior guitar playing and musical understanding…far older than his years would suggest. His stage personna is also that of a polished lifelong musician three times his age. And his songwriting sounds of a man who’s spend a lifetime riding boxcars across the country, guitar in hand, picking for his dinner. Jason Lee Hale Child Of The Dark Indie Jason Lee Hale is a friend and fellow musician, so I’m inclined to write a good review anyway… That said, I was nicely surprised at the sheer caliber of this cd. The material is very ear-catching, and the performance is superb across the board. The recording quality is as good or better than anything coming out of LA, New York and Nashville. And the sheer energy produced on this record is indeed better than studio recordings from any of the above, probably due to the fact that each musician involved lives in the same musical family of our Altered State Music Community, as opposed to being hired musical guns in the national markets. It really makes a difference, people. Jason is joined in this project by a
large group of regional players of note: Barbara Raney on backing vocals, Mike Nelson and Larry Mann on bass, Darrell Johnson and Lance Womack on drums, Stephen Winter and Stuart Baer on various keyboards, Eric Ware on guitar, Johnny Atomic on lead guitar, Gerald Lambert on percussion, and a large group of fellow vocalists including Brian Nahlen, Shannon and Jamie Boshears, Jay, Helen and Moriah Wedaman on backing vocals. This record was produced by Jay Wedaman and Jason Lee Hale. Child of the Dark was recorded in North Little Rock at Brown Carpet Studio, and mastered at L. Nix Mastering in Memphis. Dauphne Trenholm handled the photography and record cover graphics and website at www.jasonleehale.com. Jason, who wrote and arranged all the songs, of course is a multi-intrumentalist and vocalist, playing lead guitar, lap steel and accordion. The record only contains 7 songs, and is over far too quickly for my tastes. All together, Child of the Dark is a very good record and I highly recommend it be added to your music collection. You will find yourself playing it again and again. And don’t miss the September 17 record release at the White Water Tavern. On the roster will be appearances of Jay Jackson, Brian Nahlen, Amy Garland, Barbara Raney, The P47s, The Broken Hipsters among others.
Nancy McCallion Opossum and Praties EMI This is the most wonderful new recording I have heard in many years. The 15 song set flows from tune to tune. On the surface I’d say this music is a superb collection of Irish-Scot folk songs, but upon further listening it more appears to be lilting musical poetry that immediately creates loving peace. I wouldn’t put this on for some rowdy party…rather, it’s the sort of collection you might go off in the corner with by yourself, and relax and dream with. Nancy McCallion is a sweet singer, and also playes guitar and tin whistle; Danny Krieger plays guitar, slide guitar, adds vocals, and, according to the liner notes, “ill-prepared piano”; Heather Hardy adds violin and vocal harmonies; Ralph Gilmore handles drums and percussion; and Catherine Zavala adds vocal harmonies on “Johnny Will You Cross.” Please visit www.nancymccallion. com and get to know her.

A Woman Needs Love Akeem Kemp Indie Kemp’s sophomore recording appeared some three years after the first. It’s like a continuation of I Like It All, though the listener can hear the growth of his music. There’s a bit deeper energy, and the groove is considerably more intense. And there’s definitely a bit more swing. “Running Crazy” feels like a jibe blues and then grows into a downright Stevie Wonderesque song. In ways he sounds like he’s channeling George Benson with a slight bit of Santana tossed in for good measure. And when you’re least expecting it, some Steely Dan ingredients embrace the song. The Ben Miller Band
Taking Ozark Stomp music to the world ---Curtis Coleman & Peter Read Back in the olden days (90-1,000 years ago), a poor man’s yearning to make music was so spirited that he would put his everyday humble house-wares to use, to construct an instrument on which he could express himself thoroughly. Using a washboard, a washtub, a pair of spoons, and a jug, he’d conjure up the sounds of their voices and have himself a band. The heart of such a musician is unstoppable, passionate, inspiring, and true. The Ben Miller Band has learned a thing or two from those pioneers of music. Although back in those days, these instruments were crafted due to lack of funds to buy “real” instruments, I don’t think that was the inspiration behind the Ben Miller Band. What some of us see as an old dirty laundry cleaner that wound up in an antique store, to these guys, is an instrument of art.
Ben Miller has found an interesting voice through the rotary dial 1960’s telephone he sometimes uses as a microphone, all the while playing slide guitar, harmonica, and foot percussion. He exudes that fervent passion, like that of his forerunners. Ingenious, poetic, skilled…a true artist. Then there’s Scott Leeper, who put some weedeater string on a stick, attached it to an old washtub and electrified it. Some of us believe he’s the best washtub bass player on the planet, and he just may be. This band was a trio up until several months ago, performing around the United States and Europe constantly…until one day founding member Doug Dicherry felt a different calling and left the band to pursue a solo career. Booked well into 2017, complete with national, continental and at least two European tours, Ben and Scott faced a major issue: break up the band or find a musician magical enough to somehow fill Doug’s colorful shoes. About the same time, their old friends Smilin’ Bob Lewis and Rachel Ammons, a.k.a. Tyrannosaurus Chicken, were wearing themselves out working throughout the country, making music from the Gulf of Mexico to Chicago. Out of the blue, Ben ran into his old friend Bob and officially asked Tyrannosaurus Chicken to join the band…not only as Doug’s replacement, but as a completely new dimension to the Ben Miller Band…or rather two new dimensions.
The tours were saved and the label contracts fulfilled, and the all new Ben Miller Band not only continued, but grew exponentially into a much bigger and bolder band. Since they had made music together for years, both bands already knew each other’s material too, making the transition an easy one. It is a musical marriage made in Heaven...and just in time. Things worked out quickly, too, because 2 weeks after the deal was made, they toured thoughout the United States and Canada. Then they were home for less than a week and they left to open for ZZ Top for a six-week tour throughout Europe. The band has been back in the states for two weeks, and they are leaving again tomorrow for another Euroean tour, this time as the headliners. Plans after this trip are to go into a Nashville studio and cut a new album, of course, this time with both Bob and Rachel adding their incredible musicianship to the work, especially with Rachel’s violin and fiddle, and
Bob’s artful banjo and guitar work. Some call the music Ozark Stomp, an appropriate moniker if there ever was one. There are a number of elements that create the unique and signature sound of the Ben Miller Band. One of the most powerful is the wide range of instrumenta-
tion, that just four individuals are masters of. Many of these instruments are homemade, rescued from flea markets, thrift stores, and junkyards, fashioned into Frankensteins of melody. Traditional Bluegrass/Folk instruments have been electrified and bastardized by effects pedals, creating a feast of modern sound with antique personality…like grandpa hillbilly on LSD.

TEN HELPFUL HINTS FOR GETTING THE KIDS BACK IN SCHOOL (OR PROTECTING YOUR SCHOOL CHILDREN IN THE ‘90S) “But to go to school in a summer morn, Oh, it drives all joy away! Under a cruel eye outworn, The little ones spend the day In sighing and dismay...” ---William Blake, The Schoolboy l. Why pay outrageous prices for new schoolwear needs when your local thrift store may have what you need for pennies on the dollar? A new bulletproof vest can cost an arm and a leg, but the used vest store offers protection at a rate anyone can afford. Those “weak spots” in a used bulletproof vest can be repaired by just unraveling an S. O. S. pad and stitching up those gaping holes “quick as a wink.” 2. Don’t spend megabucks on a real blackjack when you can adequately arm your back-to-schooler with a handy-dandy homemade sap made from an old woolen sock with a bar of bath soap slipped into the the toe! It saves $$$ and is just as effective as the ones that real street gangs use...plus it smells nice and can be easily hidden among those dirty gym clothes. 3. Don’t waste money on mace or other chemical assault deterrents when a little bronchial decongestant bottle filled with household ammonia and liquid laundry bleach will do the trick for less. Sure the mugger who extorted your nine-year-old’s lunch money all last year might be permanently blinded by this little cost-cutter, but after you average what he stole against what you save by not buying the commercial preparation, I think a little permanent blindness in a few unsuspecting schoolground mobsters can be justified, don’t you? 4. To help deter those bothersome bus-stop confrontations so often associated with having a public school kid who has to ride the bus, teach your kids to effectively use the homemade “barf-dispenser.” Just mix up a quart or so (more if you have lots of children) of powdered parmesan cheese, pureed English peas, buttermilk, and Bac-Os and pour into an inexpensive hot-water bottle. Your kids will be safer than at Sunday school once they are trained to hose down that 22-year-old seventh grade masher with the inexpensive and effective “barf-dispenser.” Watch the masher turn green and head for home when your well-trained public-schooler says to the kid who wants his milk money “I think I’m going to be sick” and makes a few barfing noises while firmly squeezing that rubber bag full of artificial vomit! Your kid can count on his agressor’s rapid retreat...and hey, the kids get a big kick out of it, too! (Washes out with warm water and your usual laundry detergent.) 5. Why waste your valuable leisure time attending those weekly PTA meetings in person? Sinca almost all public school administrations have opted to spend your hard-earned tax dollars on VCRs, computers, phone modems and other handy expensive educational aids instead of raising teachers’ salaries, just pre-tape all your public school gripes and tirades on your home video recorder. You can save a lot of time by watching the school’s lack of progress in your child’s education and recording a month’s worth of complaints at a time. Just mail in your cassette a day ahead of time with a memo stating that copies have been forwarded to the news departments of your local television stations. You can bet that somebody is gonna give your little home production a look-see. Spend the time you save from having skipped PTA with your kid, teaching him or her how to read. I think you’ll be pleased with the results. 6. Rather than waste a lot of money on those expensive designer clothes that “all the kids are supposed to be

wearing,” just watch a couple hours of MYV, then trot on down to the Salvation Army for some of those hard-tobeat fashion buys that the good “Salvation” people make available. Once you’ve got your precious offspring attired in the manner of a shaved-headed, nose-pierced ragamuffin street urchin, you can rest assured in the sweet knowledge that your children’s peer group approval quotient is directly proportionate to the school administrator’s ability (or willingness) to enforce a reasonable dress code that usually is about two notches below that of an Ethopian famine refugee. Ain’t they cute? 7. Media reports of assaults by students on their fel lows aimed at attaining expensive items such as $250 athletic shoes, $300 designer sports jackets, gold chains, and expensive dangly earrings have caused concern on the part of parents throughout the public school system. These concerns are easily alleviated by using the same common-sense approach that is employed in coping with unacceptable programming on television: Don’t let your kids watch TV trash and don’t let your kid wear statussymbol items to school. 8. For the more educationally progressive parents of school-aged children, try this novel approach to learning: A. Turn off the TV B. Unplug Nintendo C. Confiscate cassette and CD players and headphones D. Unplug the telephone E. Gather family into one room F. Exert parental prerogative by asking for (or demanding) undivided attention of all children G. Read a book! [In many cases this approach may lead to disorientation on the part of older children, but persistence will lead to remarkable results, especially in younger kids who may not be addicted to electronic entertainment as of yet.] 9. When struggling with those all-important decisions regarding personal transportation for that peer-conscious, driving-age teen, try some of these easy “parentfriendly” techniques for helping your almost-grown-up decide on the right means of transportation for him or her: A. Begin by explaining how far (in the snow) that you had to walk to school as a teen (this never makes the desired impression, but it serves as a guilt inducement ploy on the part of the parent, while doubling as a humorous “ice breaker” which lightens the mood in a difficult, yet necessary, parental task). B. Explain that one does not usually bother to calculate the monthly payments on a Lamborghini. C. Inform the teen-aged driver-to-be that his (or her) parents’ inability to correctly pronounce the word “Porsche” does not mean that the parents’ diminshed intellectual capacity is such that they will stupidly concede to co-signing the note and raising the teen’s allowance by $750 per month. D. Attempt (subtly of course) to include in conversa tions such subliminal messages as “used,” “second owner,” “low mileage compact,” “third owner,” et cetera. E. Remind your teen that money does not grow on trees. F. Remind the future driver that bicycles are still in production and are readily available as well as affordable. G. Explain that even people like Axl Rose and Sinnead O’Conner have jobs, regardless of how uncool that may seem right now. H. Ignore the impending gales of laughter and repeat that the teen driver-to-be is welcome to use the old family station wagon on weekends. I. Finally, at least make an attempt to explain the con cept of vehicle upkeep and insurance. 10. Parents of kids who are entering school for the first time should be aware that, not only does going off to school seldom kill the child, it also is unlikely to cause the death of the parents...relax and enjoy it...

This month I’m talking with you about some of the truths I’ve seen work in my own life and others’ lives. Here are seven of them. I hope you’ll take the time now to read them, give them a try and see if they work in your life too. Maybe you already have.

1. Every day, we still have to suit up and show up. It was James Russell Lowell who said, “Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do which must be done, whether you like it or not. Being forced to work, to do your best, will breed in you a hundred virtues which the idle will never know.” 2. Remember: no one can make you frustrated or angry. You, and you alone, decide how you react to people, places and happenings. When I learned this truth and started practicing it, it changed my life, and the child in me began to grow up. 3. Here’s another. It goes along with number 2. Never miss that golden opportunity to shut up! “A closed mouth gathers no foot.” Or, as my mother used to say, “The least said, is the easiest mended.” 4. Every little kindness that we do, takes on a life of its own. We probably will never see all the good results. After we have long forgotten what we did or said, it keeps on working in that person’s life and others. 5. We never outgrow our need to say “Please” and “Thank you.” 6. I don’t have the strength and will power, to do everything I need to do. I have to “out-source.” My out-source is the unlimited divine mind that created and maintains the universe. That power is available to me twentyfour-seven. It is available to you, too. 7. I don’t have all the answers, but God does.
JasonWillmon & Trey Johnson ---David Hughes Labor Day Weekend will see the 20th Hot Springs Blues Festival serve up some steamin’ hot blues music, Saturday and Sunday, September 3-4, in Hill Wheatley Plaza in downtown Hot Springs. The festival returns to Hill Wheatley Plaza after a year on the infield at Oaklawn Jockey Club. The partial line-up for the festival will include a bevy of local acts and some up and coming national acts. Representing the SCBS will be the Spa City Youngbloods, the society’s Blues In The Schools band. These young musicians have been developed through practice and performance of the BITS program. They have played the Youth Showcase at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and have played several festival stages including the Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival in Rentiesville, OK; the Hot Water Hills Music and Arts Festival in Hot Springs; and the Hot Springs Blues Festival. Stuart Baer and Lance Womack, a keyboard and drum duo based out of Little Rock, represented the SCBS in the solo/duo portion of the IBC this past January. The duo will play the festival stage over the weekend, bringing hypnotic rhythms and groovy fills along with some silky smooth vocals to their music. The house band for the SCBS’ Hump Night Blues Jam, held on the first and third Wednesday’s of each month at the Big Chill will see some stage time. Led by guitarist and vocalist Brent Frazier, the band is a tested mix of musicians more than capable of delivering traditional or contemporary blues. Cedell Davis will be a feature of the 2016 edition of the HSBF, backed by local band Brethren. Davis is one of the last remaining blues men of his day. He was recently nominated for a Grammy for his latest release. Greg Binns, guitarist and vocalist for Brethren, has helped Davis with a resurgence in his music, traveling as Davis’ backup band. Little Rock based duo Trey Johnson and Jason Willmon and local band Unseen Eye, led by guitarist and vocalist Chad Carter will make an appearance at this year’s festival. Johnson and Willmon played last year’s festival and were finalists in the solo/duo category of the 2016 IBC. The undercard highlights at this year’s festival will be the Noah Wotherspoon Band from Ohio and this year’s IBC winners, The Delgado Brothers from California. Guitar fans will be salivating over both acts. Wotherspoon is a two time IBC finalist and winner of the prestigious and coveted Outstanding Guitar Player Award, an honor bestowed on the best guitar player during the IBC. Joey Delgado of the Delgado Brothers was this year’s guitar award winner. The SCBS is looking for sponsors and donors for this year’s festival. I write to you, dear readers, on the eve of the 20th Hot Springs Blues Festival. For at least a decade, I’ve had the privilege to produce this fine festival. I’ve watched it grow from a one day affair in a dusty parking lot with performers on the back of a flatbed trailer to an almost week-long event that had international notoriety and then back to a stripped down weekend event. Lots of bittersweet moments. Lots of tense moments. Lots of awesome moments. The scenario is the same every year. Worrying about having enough money to cover the nut. Will all the performers show up? On time? What about the vendors? Why won’t the power work? What about our security? Do we have enough volunteers? Holy shit! Is that a storm cloud? The anxiety over pulling off an event with so many moving parts is ALWAYS there. Anyone who has ever been the overlord of such an event can testify to these and similar issues. The payoff for me is when the last act takes the stage on the last night of the festival. I can finally relax and enjoy the production. At some point I will find a vantage that allows me to look out across the crowd and eventually say to myself ‘Not a bad festival. Not bad at all.’ Over my time with the HSBF I’ve had a lot of great memories. Some I helped to create, others that just happened because of the magic of the blues. Since this is the 20th anniversary of this fine little festival, I thought I’d share some of my favorite memories from the many artists, volunteers and blues lovers that have graced the Spa City at the end of the summer. I first attended the HSBF in 2000, the year I moved to Hot Springs. I seem to recall the festival was held later in the year, October maybe, that year. I had my young daughters with me that particular Saturday evening and we were all excited to get to go hear the music. When we arrived at the festival it was dark and cold. Not a little cold. COLD! We stayed for maybe thirty minutes and left. The blues had turned us blue! Not to be discouraged, my lovely bride and I eventually became members of the Spa City Blues Society and volunteers for the blues festival. We met the cast of characters that made up the blues society at that time and fell right in. It wasn’t long before I began to help book the acts for the festival and eventually started handling the production. There have been a lot of fine artists grace the stage of the HSBF. One of my favorite memories was seeing St. Thomas Jenkins on stage with Joe Colvis, Heather Crosse and Chad Carter. I didn’t realize who I was seeing at the time but I can now look back on that day and appreciate the history that was on the stage. One year, I talked our SCBS board into booking a singer/songwriter who was relatively unknown in blues circles at the time. I had read a review about the lady and purchased her latest CD. The board bit and we booked her. This was the same year that we brought in Hubert Sumlin and Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith as the headliners. EG Kight opened her set and within a few songs put out a rendition of “At Last” that brought the house down. After her set, Kight was still selling CDs and signing autographs half way through the headliner’s set. Since then, EG Kight fills the house every time she plays the Spa City.

For a couple of years the SCBS joined forces with the Arkansas River Blues Society and offered up a second stage of music. The first time I heard Ben ‘Swamp Donkey’ Brenner was at one of these festivals. I remember the uniqueness of his sound and delivery and I loved his songwriting. I recall he spoke of ‘being bored and broke and getting house drunk’. Good times. The last time the late Michael Burks played the HSBF will forever stick in my memory. This was one of the year’s when we would start at noon and end at midnight. Burks was the headline that year and was set to play a 75 or 90 minute set. Two and a half hours later there were about 200 people crowded to the front of the stage and Burks was still kickin’ ass! We had to tell him to quit or he would have played all night. One of the best performances I had ever seen from him. The first year we moved the festival to Hill Wheatley Plaza saw Bernard Allison and Shemekia Copeland as our headliners. This was also the first year we attempted a two day festival. Allison put on a great show and the SCBS had stumbled onto a new festival formula. We were still working long hours, they just weren’t all on the same day! The year Brandon Santini and all-star roots & blues band Southern Hospitality played proved to be a great festival. Santini had recently recorded his CD This Time Another Year. The disc featured a song that included a duet with piano man Victor Wainwright. Wainwright was in Southern Hospitality who would headline later that evening. During Santini’s set, he brought Wainwright to the stage to sing the swamp-drenched tune “Baby What You Doing To Me?” It was one of those perfect moments when everything lined up. Later that evening,
Wainwright, JP Soars and Damon Fowler lit things up with their Southern Hospitality set. The year that Diunna Greanleaf appeared at the festival with Jon Del Toro Richardson on guitar was yet another moment. Greenleaf managed to get in the middle of the festival crowd and hold court, singing without a microphone. An amazing performance! So many great performances by so many amazing acts…Joe Vicino and The Smokedaddys, The Stella Vees, Barbara Blue, Grady Champion, Shakura S’aida, Keb Mo, Los Lonely Boys, Eric Hughes, Ray Bonneville, Randy McQuay, Lightnin’ Lee & Rooster, Zac Harmon and the list could go on and on. Of course, there have been a couple of years when things didn’t go so well. One year in particular was the year Hurricane Ike made his appearance. We were geared up to have one of the best festivals to date with the Fabulous Thunderbirds headlining. The storms began to blow in Friday and didn’t let up until Sunday. We managed to get four out of our ten acts on the stage that weekend and we lost our asses! One major positive came from that festival. The SCBS and the HSBF were shown the true support they had. Locals, individuals and businesses, stepped up to help fundraise to pay off the debts of the rained-out festival. Local musicians who were paid even though they didn’t play gave their money back to the blues society. The SCBS managed to pay off all debts before the end of that year. It was an amazing show of support. The volunteers through the years have been the backbone of this festival, as they are at any undertaking like this. I’ve had the opportunity and privilege to work beside and lead some of the finest people out there. Our volunteers show up, work hard and play hard and it is truly appreciated. From the folks like Leadra Orr, Dave Reagan, and Steve & Nancy Harnar that were there from the beginning to people like John Vaught, Bill MacSorley, Mary Melton and so, so many others that have kept it moving forward, our volunteers ROCK! I’ve met so many people through their volunteer efforts at the festival who I now call personal friends. It has certainly been a reward for me. To all the volunteers over the years…thank you for your hard work and thank you for your friendship. It has been an honor to work beside you and to serve you. This year’s Hot Springs Blues Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, September 3-4, in Hill Wheatley Plaza, downtown Hot Springs. It’s a bit Spartan compared to years past but it will be good. And it will continue to grow and continue to be known as one of the best ‘biggest little festivals’ in the country.

But then he said that they could blindfold him and he would recognize any animal’s skin from its feel, and if he could locate the bullet hole he would even tell them what caliber the bullet was that killed the animal. The hunter said that he was willing to prove it if they would put up the drinks, and so the bet was on. They blindfolded him carefully and took him to his first animal skin. After feeling it for a few moments, he announced “Bear.” Then he felt the bullet hole and declared, “Shot with a .308 rifle.” He was right. They brought him another skin, one that someone had in their car trunk. He took a bit longer this time and then said, “Elk, Shot with a 7mm Mag rifle.” He was right again. Through the night, he proved his skills again and again, every time against a round of drinks. Finally he staggered home, drunk out of his mind, and went to sleep. The next morning he got up and saw in the mirror that he had one hell of a shiner. He said to his wife, “I know I was drunk last night, but not drunk enough to get in a fight and not remember it. Where did I get this black eye?” His wife angrily replied, “I gave it to you. You got into bed and put your hand down my panties. Then you fiddled around a bit and loudly announced, “Skunk, killed with an axe…” Bill and Hillary were going down a back road and stopped at a gas station. As the worker was filling up their car, he said to Hillary “I went to high school with you”. She recognized him and agreed with him. Later as they were driving down the road Bill said “If you had married him you wouldn’t be married to the President”. Hillary said “Oh yes I would - he would be President...” There was a man who had worked his whole life in a pickle factory. One day he came hone and told his wife he had been fired from his job. She began to scream and yell, “You have given them 20 years of devoted service.
