OPTIONAL RECIPES! A Note From Marina Makes! Hi, space rangers! I’m Marina from Marina Makes (marinamakesblog.com). Today, our taste buds will be traveling to infinity and beyond with these yummy recipes I’ve created for you. Up first are hot rockets, which will take us to the Milky Way to see the colorful galaxy strawberries. I hope you have a great time in the kitchen! Adults, as always, I encourage you to involve your kids in the cooking process. Whether they help by wrapping the hot dog with the crescent roll, swirling the galaxy whipped cream or just taste testing, you’re sure to have a blast! The directions section includes specific ways that children can help out. I hope you have fun cooking together! I’d love to see how your food turns out, so please feel free to share pictures on social media. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #marinamakeseats. Happy eating!

Step 1: Use your included colored pencils to

color both astronauts, bringing them to life.

Step 2: Carefully cut out each astronaut. *WARNING: ADULT SUPERVISION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WHEN USING THE SCISSORS*

Step 3: Build your astronauts. You will need

your paper bags and tape for this part. Leaving the paper bags folded, tape an astronaut head onto the base of each bag and then tape the body below.

Step 4: Allow your little one(s) to choose

which astronaut they would like to be and show them how to use their hand to turn the paper bag into a puppet! Use the other puppet for yourself or additional children.

READING TIME Get ready to read Astronaut Living in Space by Kate Hayden with help from your astronaut friends! Book Summary: Discover Linda’s exploration through space as an astronaut. Learn what astronauts eat and how they train to become one. Experience how scientists use telescopes and journeys in space shuttles to learn more about space. You will even learn how astronauts get their exercise in space! We believe this book will be best received as an interactive read-aloud, so we have included stopping points modified for your little one(s) and older one(s) below. When you reach a stopping point use one of the puppets to ask your child(ren) the question and encourage them to respond using their puppet!

Get your puppets ready and jump right into the book! Stopping Points for Little Ones (grades pre-k-1): Because the book is at a higher reading level, the stopping points for little ones are primarily focused on the images throughout the book. Feel free to read the book with your little one(s) or just walk them through the pictures, whatever works best for them! Cover page: What do you see on the cover? What do you think this book will be about? Pg 7: Linda has wanted to go into space since she was little. The book says she had to go through a lot of training and many tests to be able to go, why do you think astronauts have to do that? Pg 12: Look at the space suits at the bottom of the page. Why do you think astronauts have to wear these suits in space? Pg 18: What do you notice about the way astronauts eat in space that is different from how you eat at home? Pg 25: Why do you think astronauts have to exercise while in space? Pg 27: The book says astronauts have to take turns sleeping while in space. Why do you think they have to do this? End of book: The Kids Night In Box team has set up several missions for you to complete as a part of your astronaut training‌.are you up for the challenge?

Stopping Points for Older Ones (grades 2-5): Cover Page: What do you think astronauts do for their job? Pg 8: Why do you think Linda had to complete tests and training to become an astronaut? Pg 15: Why do you think her pens and snacks would float away if she did not strap them down? Pg 17: So, we know that the mission commander is in charge…. but what do you think the pilot does? Pg 23: What problem does Linda run into in space and how does she respond? Pg 29: How do you think Linda feels when she sees a tile fly past the window? End of book: What did you learn about astronauts from this book? The Kids Night In Box team has set up several missions for you to complete as part of your astronaut training….are you up for the challenge? Throughout your Kids Night In Box astronaut training, feel free to listen to our “Mission Space” Spotify playlist at nightinboxes.com/music.

MISSION THREE: EAT LIKE AN ASTRONAUT Find your freeze-dried ice cream sandwich and test it out! If you’re going to be an astronaut, you have to be able to eat space food! Read these facts about space food while you enjoy your snack: •

Space food must be kept in airtight packaging.

Taste buds are not as strong in space because we produce less saliva in space, so astronauts love the bold flavors in spicy foods.

With the help of technology, NASA is working on growing fruits and veggies in space.

Fizzy drinks can be dangerous in space and are not allowed. No sodas for astronauts!

Astronauts use Taco Bell tortillas for bread!

Items Needed: •

Freeze-dried ice cream sandwich

MISSION FOUR: ROCKET TESTING Before you become an astronaut, you must be able to navigate your rocket ship. Follow the steps below to complete your rocket testing mission.

Step 1: Tie one side of the included thread to a sturdy item in your home (a chair, table leg, etc).

Step 2: Find your included straw and run the thread through the straw, then tie the other end to a different sturdy item nearby.

Step 3: Blow up your included balloon! Don’t tie the

balloon—instead, keep the air in by using your thumb and finger to pinch the opening.

Step 4: Make sure your straw is at one end of your

thread, then place your blown up balloon under the straw and tape it to the straw in three different places.

Step 5: When you are ready to launch, let go of the

balloon and watch your rocket fly! Congratulations— you flew your rocket! You can repeat this test mission as many times as you would like.

MISSION FIVE: TELESCOPE TESTING You are SO close to completing Mission Space! For your next mission, you will decorate your telescope and test it out! Use your included colored pencils and remaining space stickers to design your telescope exactly how you want it. Adults: While your little one(s) is decorating the telescope, take the included glow stars and place them around your home. You can choose to do them all in one room or spread them out. We suggest turning the lights off before they begin their telescope testing to make it that much more fun! Kiddos: Now that your telescope is decorated, get ready to test it out! Take your telescope and discover star stickers placed around your home.

MISSION SIX: COMPLETE YOUR PASSPORT Did you know that any time you leave the country you have to have a passport? A passport is a special document that has all of your information on it. So, you guessed it, for your next mission you are going to create your own SPACE passport!

Items Needed: • •

Space passport Black marker

Find your included passport and fill out the information using the black marker and decorate it however you like!

MISSION SEVEN: BUILD YOUR ROCKET *WARNING: ADULT SUPERVISION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WHEN USING THE SCISSORS* This is your final mission! You have almost completed your astronaut training. Before you can get your astronaut certificate, you must first build your rocket. Use the instructions on the inside of your Kids Night In Box to create your own rocket! Feel free to use your included colored pencils or any remaining space stickers to decorate your finished rocket ship!

Items Needed: • •

Kids Night In Box Scissors

MISSION SPACE COMPLETE Congratulations! YOU DID IT! You completed your Kids Night In Box astronaut training! It took a lot of hard work, but you kept pushing until you were done. Remember, hard work always pays off in the end. Below is your Astronaut Training Certificate! Use your black marker to make it official and fill in the blank space with your name(s). If you would like, you can cut it out (with adult supervision). Adults, take a picture of your little one(s) holding their certificate and post it to Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #KidsNightInBox and #KNIMissionSpace.
