Welcome to your Kids Night In LETTER TO THE ADULT As a parent, I struggle with how exactly to go about teaching my children the important lessons related to finance. On one end of the spectrum, I want my children to stay “little” for as long as they possibly can. I believe it is mine and my husband’s job are to protect our children from some of the burdens of adulthood. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I want my children to know the value of a dollar, to learn about savings, interest, budgeting, and balancing a checkbook from as early of an age as possible. Some schools do teach personal finances, but it isn’t enough. A financial literacy test given by the National Financial Educators Council found that test-takers from 15-18 years old, scored an average of only 59.6%. How can we begin to help our children at a young age to better understand how to be financially responsible. I believe as a parent it is my duty to be provide my children a solid financial education before going out into the real world. I want to share with them the tools to be able to handle any adult decision, especially when it come to their finances. I mean think of it, how will they know what it means to take out a student loan? Or how to be responsible with a credit card? What about when it is time for them to get a job or buy a home? Where will they learn to create a savings and retirement plan? I can’t help but think that learning these skill at a young age will only benefit my children once they are adults. We all know that lecturing a child isn’t always the best way to really get them to listen and learn. Through this experience, I hope that we have presented this critical lesson in an exciting and approachable way. As the Night In Boxes team developed the following activities, our focus was to “balance the scale”. Feel free to tip that scale either direction base on your comfort level. As always, as a new business we appreciate all of the love and support from you! We encourage you to share your Kids Night In experiences with your friends, coworkers and family. Share your pictures on your favorite social media page using the hashtag #KidsNightInBox. Till Next Month! Megan Pruitt Founder, Kids Night In

Ten Pennies

I have a shiny penny. Just one little cent. Where did I put my little coin? Into my bank it went.

I have a shiny penny. That makes two coins for me. If I find another penny, I’ll count them, 1, 2, 3.

Seven little, eight little, Nine little pennies. Te n little pennies in a dime.

I now have two more pennies. How many does that make? I can trade five pennies with you. One nickel I can take!

Earning Interest After you have saved up some money you can take it to the bank and open up a savings or checking account. If you let your money stay in your bank account, you can grow your money and earn interest. That’s right! Most of the time, you have to work to get money. But you may not know that your money can work for you everyday.

INTEREST GAME

KEY TERMS

Note to the adult:

Interest:

The interest game is a great way to teach children about compound interest and how it works! Follow the directions below.

Interest is what a bank pays you to keep your money there. The longer the money stays in the bank, the more mon ey you earn.

Interest Game STEPS: Simply give the participating child one coin. Based on their age pick a time frame to not touch the coin. EXAMPLE

3-year-old= three minutes 5-year-old= five minutes etc. If they succeed in delaying gratification and still have that original coin at the end of the time they get additional coins.

YOUNGER CHILDREN: At the end of the game, for younger children you can explain this is similar to how their money will grow in a bank.

OLDER CHILDREN: At the end of the game, explain that this is how compound interest in a savings account works. You leave your money unused in exchange for the reward of making money. Just as those play coins and money added up, so will their real money!

Next you will escalate the challenge and the reward. If they don’t touch either of those coins after another “x” minutes, you’ll add on a play dollar. If they can delay gratification and invest in the “future” at the end of 20 minutes, they’ll now have five dollars.
