Learn About the

Arctic Climate Lesson for the Older ones... •

The Arctic is the northernmost part of the world, or in other words, at the very top of our globe. It is also the COLDEST part of our world.

Ice and snow are the RULERS of the Arctic. They are everywhere all the time.

The Arctic has a very harsh and cold climate. This makes it very tough for certain plants, animals, and even people to live there. The people, animals, and plants that do live there have ADAPTED their bodies to the harsh climate.

You can think of the Arctic as a freezing cold desert. It is very dry and gets little rainfall. The wind, on the other hand, is strong and consistent. The Arctic is a very WINDY place which makes the temperature feel even COLDER than it really is.

As you know we have four seasons: summer, fall, winter, and spring. Well, in the Arctic there are only two seasons: winter and summer. But do NOT be fooled, just because it is summertime in the Arctic, it is still very cold. It is NOTHING like the summertime we experience.

During the summer, the Arctic’s temperature ranges between 26 and 53 degrees Fahrenheit. So their summers are at times colder than our winters! In the wintertime the temperature ranges anywhere between -11 and -58 degrees Fahrenheit. CAN YOU IMAGINE!?!?

Another CRAZY thing about the Arctic is that during the summer they experience sunlight 24 hours a day, so it never gets dark. In the winter they experience about 2 months of NO sunlight at all, com plete darkness.

The Arctic’s climate is different from any other place in the world. It is one of the most SPECTACULAR landscapes on earth.

Make your own

Arctic Snowflakes It’s time to make some Arctic snowflakes! We have provided you with two versions of the same activity. The first version is for younger children, and the second is more appropriate for older ones by including some math tactics. Please review the activities and decide which one you think is best for your child.

Take three of the pipe cleaners and fold them in half.

Take two of the three pipe cleaners that you folded and twist them together where they both bend.

Then take the third pipe cleaner and twist it around the first two. This should leave you with the shape of a snowflake.

4

LITTLE ONES: With your help (as needed) allow your little one to place different pony beads on the pipe cleaner snowflakes. Try to encourage them to do this by themselves if possible. This is a great way to work on their fine motor skills and let them show their creativity.

OLDER ONES: Have your child create one or multiple color patterns by placing 6 pony beads on each pipe cleaner. This will enhance their fine motor skills, show their creativity, encourage counting skills, and build pattern making skills. This is a great way to have fun while incorpor ating education.

5

LITTLE ONES: Once you and your little one have finished placing the beads on your snowflake, wrap the end of each pipe cleaner around your finger, curling it, and then tuck the end of the pipe cleaner into the last bead. This prevents the beads from coming off.

OLDER ONES: Once the beads are placed on the snowflake, have your child wrap the end of each pipe cleaner around their finger, curling it, and then tuck the end of the pipe cleaner into the last bead. (Help them if needed.) This prevents the beads from coming off.

6

For the final step, tie your ribbon to one of the ends of the snowflake to create an ornament that you can keep forever!

Watercolor Resist Art For the Little Ones...

Parents, it is time to bring out the best artistic skills you can find! In this activity you are going to draw a secret picture for your little one to reveal with their watercolor paint.

Get your white crayon and piece of watercolor paper ready. YOU (the parent) are going to draw a

1

polar bear. DON´T WORRY, we have provided some step by step instructions for you. For this activity don’t worry about coloring in the nose and eyes. We realize not everyone is an artist, so just draw it the best that you can. Your little one will still love it! (If it is difficult to see what you are drawing, try looking at the paper at different angles.) Once you have drawn something similar to the

2

picture on the left, you can allow your little one to place several of the star stickers provided on the top of the paper. After this is complete it is time to get out the watercolor paint!

3

Have your little one take the watercolor paint and

4 5

While the paint is still wet, have your little one

paintbrush and begin to paint the paper. Eventually they should cover the entire paper with their watercolor paint, revealing their polar bear!

sprinkle some of the salt on the paper. This will give your picture a ¨starry night¨ effect. Once the p aint is COMPLETELY dry, remove the star stickers to reveal the final product!

Watercolor Resist Art For the Older Ones‌ For this activity your child is going to draw a polar bear and create a beautiful winter background to go along with it!

Get out your white crayon and watercolor paper. Place the paper so that it is horizontal, and then

1

allow your child to follow the steps to the left, to draw their best polar bear (helping them as needed). The polar bear should be in the center of the page near the bottom. (If it is difficult to see what they are drawing, try looking at the paper at different angles.) Next have your child use the masking tape provided to form bir ch trees. FIRMLY apply pieces of tape to

2

the watercolor paper. The tape should go from the bottom of the paper all the way to the top to make it look like it is going off of the page. They can put a few pieces on either side of the polar bear. Feel free to make the pieces of tape slanted to give the trees a more natural look.

3 4 5 6

Next, have your child take the star stickers and place them throughout the top of the paper, making sure to press them down firmly. Finally, allow your child to use the watercolor paint and paintb rush to cover the entire paper with the paint. While the paint is still wet allow your child to sprinkle some of the salt on top of it. This will give the picture a ¨starry night¨ effect. Once the p aint is COMPLETELY dry, have your child remove the tape and stars to reveal their final project!
