RISE UP! Kids Night In Box

Welcome To Your

Kids Night In Box

Welcome superheroes! First, let us welcome you to your Kids Night In Box. Thanks for choosing us! We are so grateful that you’ve allowed us into your home this month to help build lifelong memories with you and your little one(s). During your time enjoying this box you and your little one(s) will tackle the increasingly important topic of bullying. As a parent of a child about to enter kindergarten it’s a topic I have addressed early on in hopes of it never becoming an issue. I find myself thinking how blessed I was to grow up in a time when there was no social media and can’t imagine what that will be like for the youth of today. We turned to the experts to help guide us for this journey and attached you will find a note from our friends at Home Educators of America. The enclosed note will help serve as a guide to navigate this important topic. As we continue to grow, we appreciate any social media sharing that you can help us with! Social media sharing not only spreads the word about our boxes but also allows us to see our boxes come to life. We are hosting a contest this month, and one lucky subscriber will win a SuperKid personalized storybook in which they will be the main character! To enter the contest, post a picture with your Kids Night In Box visible and upload it to either Facebook or Instagram using hashtags #KidsNightInBox and #KNIRiseUp. Lastly, if you and your little one(s) received this box as a gift, we would love for you to continue this journey with us! To become a subscriber, visit us at www.KidsNightInBox.com. There are several subscription plans to choose from. If you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to message us on Facebook or email us at customerservice@nightinboxes.com. We value any and all feedback! Best wishes,

Megan Pruitt Founder of Kids Night In Box

Grab your recipe card! Hi friends! I’m Marina from Marina Makes (marinamakesblog.com). The saying “Not all superheroes wear capes“ is true! Some heroes hide their identities, but the main character of the book you’re about to read wears his proudly. I thought it would be fun for us to get into the hero spirit and make a cape and superhero mask out of food! I hope you have fun creating yours. As always, I encourage you to involve your little one(s) in the process of cooking, whether you have them assemble, flip the crepe or just taste test. The directions section includes specific ways that your little one(s) can help out. I hope you have fun cooking together! I’d love to see how your food turns out, so please feel free to share pictures on social media. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #marinamakeseats. Happy eating!

Find out how superheroes handle bullies by reading How to Deal With Bullies: Superhero Style by Wiley Blevins.

Book Summary: Zach is an ordinary kid like you until he spots a bully. He

imagines himself in his superhero outfit and swoops in to save the day! While standing up for his friends, he teaches us how to use our words for good and stop bullies. Ask your child(ren) the questions below to get their minds ready to read! Pre-reading questions for little ones (grades PreK-2): 1. Do you know what it means to be a bully? 2. Have you ever seen someone bullying? What were they doing? 3. Do you know what it means to be a superhero? 4. How do you think the superhero is going to deal with the bullies? Pre-reading questions for older ones (grades 3–6): 1. What does it mean to be a bully? Give examples. 2. Have you ever seen someone bullying? What were they doing? 3. What are some ways that you can stop bullying when you see it? Go ahead and read How to Deal With Bullies: Superhero Style with your child(ren). Read it aloud to them or have them read it to you. You can even take turns reading and switch on every page! Once you finish the book, ask your child(ren) the questions below to test what they learned! Post-reading questions for little ones (grades PreK-2): 1. Use the “big questions” on the last page of the book for discussion purposes. 2. Why should you step in to help when you see other people being bullied? 3. Other than using your words, what can you do to protect yourself if you are being bullied? Post-reading questions for older ones (grades 3–6): 1. Use the “big questions” on the last page of the book for discussion purposes. 2. How can you be an upstander* if you see someone around you being bullied? 3. Why do you think it is important not to say mean things back to a bully? *UPSTANDER: SOMEONE WHO INTERVENES ON BEHALF OF A PERSON BEING ATTACKED OR BULLIED

A bully is someone who harms or scares another person on purpose. Bullies try to make others feel bad. A buddy is someone who sticks up for those around them and is kind. Buddies are friendly and try to make you feel good. We should all strive to be buddies for the people around us! Find your included Bully vs. Buddy sheet and pen! One side of the sheet is for little ones and the other side is for older ones. Read the instructions below and decide which side is best for your kiddo(s), or take it above and beyond and do both sides.

Little ones: On the side of the sheet labeled Little Ones, read through the

scenarios and then let your little one(s) circle the happy face if they think the person is being a buddy or the sad face if they think the person is being a bully.

Older ones: On the side of the sheet labeled Older Ones, allow your

kiddo(s) to write out ways someone can be a buddy or bully under the given columns.

SuperUpstander Obstacle Course

Items Needed: •

Masking tape

Upstander badges

Cape

Mask

Badge holder

Complete an obstacle course and earn upstander badges to remind you of ways you can stand up for others! When you stand up for those around you and put a stop to bullying, you are an UPSTANDER. An upstander is someone who is tough, strong and brave. He or she takes action when people around them are being bullied, just like Zach from the story. You are going to go through an obstacle course and collect upstander badges. These badges will go in your badge holder along with your superhero ID to remind you how you can be an upstander!

How to set up the obstacle course: *WE RECOMMEND READING OVER ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO SETTING UP THE OBSTACLE COURSE AND USING AN AREA WITH PLENTY OF SPACE* 1. Lay down five pieces of masking tape horizontally, making them each 1 ft. long and 1 ft. away from each other. 2. After the fifth piece of masking tape, leave a little bit of space, and then lay down a long piece of tape vertically, about 4-5 ft. in length. Place shorter pieces of tape (about 6 in. in length) horizontally on the long piece of tape to make stopping places. Place the shorter pieces of tape about every foot or so on the long piece of tape. 3. After step 2, leave a little bit of space before beginning the last section. For the last part, you are going to make a “laser” walkthrough. You will need two walls that are close together (like a hallway). Place pieces of tape from wall to wall—some slanted, some straight across, and even some from wall to floor. Make sure to leave enough space for your child to be able to climb through without touching the tape. This section should be 4-5 ft. and have a good amount of tape for your child to crawl through. 4. Finally, place the badges in their correct spots. Locate your 4 upstander badges and place them as follows: #1 in front of step 1, #2 in front of step 2, #3 in front of step 3, and #4 at the end of the obstacle course.

How to complete the obstacle course: 1. Have your little one(s) start at the beginning of the obstacle course and encourage them to pick up the first badge. Have them read the badge aloud or read it for them. Then, allow them to complete the first part of the obstacle course by hopping to each piece of horizontal tape (incorporate math into this activity by encouraging them to count as they hop. They can count by 1s, 5s, or 10s). 2. Once they reach the second badge, have them pick it up and read it aloud. Next, encourage them to walk along the long vertical piece of tape as if it were a tightrope (incorporate math by giving them an equation to solve at each “stopping point” they reach on the line. For little ones, the equation can be as simple as telling you how many fingers you are holding up). 3. Once they reach the third badge, have them pick it up and read it aloud. After this, it is time to complete the obstacle course. Have them try to crawl and climb their way through the tape without touching any. Tell them to take their time and really focus! Once they reach the end, have them pick up the last badge and read it aloud, then place it in their badge holder with the others. Congrats, kiddos—you completed your upstander obstacle course!

Beyond the Box

Super-Buddy

Items Needed: •

Pen

Explain all the ways you can be a super-buddy to those around you. Have your little one(s) write different ways that they can be a superbuddy! Encourage them to use everything they have learned though this box to show how they can rise up against bullying. If your little one is not able to write, have them tell you ways they can be a super-buddy and then write it for them. If they are able to trace, have them go over what you wrote to practice their handwriting skills.

We want to provide you with items that go beyond your Kids Night In Box adventure. We included a few gifts in your Kids Night In Box that go beyond the activities enjoyed today! The first item is an awesome pair of Bully Blocker shades! Use these as a reminder to always block bullies, even if it may seem scary. The second item is a color-by-number superhero sheet! We have provided two options containing the same picture but modified for different ages. The first one is a simple color-by-number and is meant for your little ones; the second one is a color-by-number with math equations and is meant for your older ones! Let your kiddo(s) color this sheet as a reminder to always stand up for those around you just like a superhero would.
