Hi friends! I’m Marina from Marina Makes (marinamakesblog.com). As we learn about the common bonds that bring us together through this month’s book and activities, I hope you’ll do the same as you prepare this menu. The minestrone soup I’ve prepared for you includes several foods that, similar to the people of this world, are different colors, shapes and sizes. Each one is unique and adds its own touch of flavor to the soup, just as each person on this earth contributes in some way to the world. In addition, I’ve included a recipe for a friendship snack mix. This is a great mix for your kids to deliver to friends and neighbors, old and new, helping them continue to cultivate bonds with others. This month, I’d encourage you to involve your kids in the process of cooking, whether you have them stir, add foods to the pot/bowl, or just taste test. I’ve included specific ways they can help out in the directions section. I hope you have fun cooking together! I’d love to see how your soup and snack mix turns out, so please feel free to share pictures on social media. Don’t forget to use the hashtag, #marinamakeseats. Happy eating!

Minestrone Friendship Soup

Ingredients •

2 teaspoons of thyme

14 oz can of petite diced tomatoes

6 cups of chicken or vegetable broth

1/2 cup of parmesan cheese, plus additional cheese for topping

Directions

5

Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 50-60 minutes

Hint

To intensify the flavor of the soup, add the rind of a piece of parmesan or parmigiano reggiano after adding the broth.

Step1 Chop all of the veggies prior to starting on the soup. If your child is

old enough and has a safe knife to use, ask them to help cut some or all of the vegetables. While you’re chopping, talk about the different textures and colors of the veggies.

3/4 - 1 cup of dried ditalini pasta (GF option: small GF pasta)

1 1/2 - 2 cups of kale, chopped

2 tablespoons of jarred pesto

3 tablespoons of olive oil

1/2 cup of zucchini, chopped

1/2 cup of carrots, chopped

1/2 cup of celery, chopped

1/2 cup of sweet onion, chopped

1/2 cup of green beans, chopped

3 cloves of garlic, minced

Salt

Pepper

Step2 Heat olive oil in a large pot or dutch oven over medium-high heat. At

this point, ask your child to help you add the zucchini, carrots, celery, onion, green beans and garlic to the pot. Season with salt and pepper and stir often for 7-10 minutes or until the vegetables become tender. Add thyme and cook for an additional minute or two. Have your child help you stir throughout the process.

Step3 Next, add diced tomatoes, vegetable broth, parmesan cheese, 1/2

teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Bring the soup to a boil and let it simmer uncovered for 25-30 minutes. After the soup has simmered for a while, take a couple of spoons and taste test the soup with your child. Season with additional salt and pepper, if needed.

Step4 After simmering, add the kale and mix until wilted. Next, add the

pasta and cook according to packaging. I recommend cooking a minute or two less than the recommended al dente time. Stir in the pesto and serve. Top with cheese and ENJOY!

Find a comfy spot to cuddle up and get ready to read your included book. Before you begin reading, we have some pre-reading, monitoring comprehension and post-reading questions to help deepen the conversation with your little reader(s).

Pre-Reading Questions 1.

Take a close look at the book’s front cover. a. What do you see? b. What do you think the people on the cover of the book are doing? c.

Where are the people on the cover of your book located, and where do you think they are going?

Monitoring Comprehension 1. Who do you think the man in the blue hat is? To whom is he talking? 2. What kinds of different houses do these children live in? 3. What are the long white things the students in the school are holding? What kind of writing is that? 4. Why do you think the child from the book is crying? 5. What does "love the same" mean?

Post-Reading Questions 1. What words does the author keep repeating? Why does she repeat those words? "Whoever they are, wherever they are, all over the world? Similarities and differences are shared by people all over the world." 2. What are some things that make you feel special and different than other children? 3. How do those differences make you happy? 4. What are some things that make you smile or laugh? Do you think those may be the same for other people, "Whoever they are, wherever they are, all over the world?"

Inflate your globe and help your little one(s) locate where they are from. You can also show them where your relatives or ancestors are from. Next, help them find where other Kids Night In customers are located so they can see just how many other children are exactly like them, no matter where they are!

"Whoever You Are is my second book about peace and equality. I come from a pacifist family who believes that tolerance is one of the great virtues, and that all people are equal and worthy of human rights and human dignity. Many years ago I read in the newspaper a shocking piece on the war in Bosnia (too shocking to reprint here) about the inhumanity of an 18 year old girl against a boy of the same age who had been her classmate only weeks before. She had become an animal in war and saw 'enemies' where she should have seen humans, friends, who were just like her. I thought: "We have to get to the children, while they're young. Teach them about the similarities between the peoples of the world, not the differences." I imagined a tribal elder talking to a child, passing on the values of the tribe. The storypoem began to emerge. Whoever You Are breaks new ground in children's book illustration. It could have been sweet and sentimental but instead has freed itself from cloying predictability in a style that's a breath of fresh air. The divergent, naive-art illustrations are by Leslie Staub, a funky New Orleans artist.

Next, open your included book and have your little one(s) guess where some of the children from the book are located! Finally, end by tossing your globe back and forth with your little one(s). Once the ball is caught, FREEZE and talk about the country your hand has landed on.

Where Kids Night In Box Headquarters is located

When my grandson Theo was born he was tiny and premature. He weighed one kilo (two pounds) and his arms were the size of my index finger. Every day for two and half months, to encourage him to grow and thrive, and to bond with him, I opened one of the round doors of his humidicrib and read him Whoever You Are, using the same tone of voice every time, the same rhythms and the same ups and downs. I like to think it soothed him and encouraged him to know he wasn't alone in the world: that there were millions of other little babies out there-each was his equal, and each was ready to be his friend. I am passionate about this book and thankful that it has become and remains one of my classics."

p p en ppals

In an effort to connect your little one(s) to a larger community of other children, we have created a safe and secure Kids Night In Pen Pal Community. If you so choose, your little one(s) can write a letter to a pen pal and send it to the staff here at Kids Night In. Then we will forward it to another child who is a Kids Night In customer. We will keep track of your pen pals and continue to forward future letters as well! PLEASE BE SURE TO PLACE YOUR RETURN ADDRESS ON YOUR ENVELOPE.

Locate your included Kids Night In pen pal letter and let your little one(s) have some fun decorating the letter. Fill in the blanks and return the letter to Kids Night In, and we'll pair your child with another child. Please allow up to 4 weeks to process your letters and send on your behalf, but we will try our best to get a letter back to you sooner! We would love for you to snap a picture using the hashtag #KidsNightInbox and #KNIPenPal while your little one is decorating or placing his or her letter in the mailbox and then post to Facebook or Instagram.
