Optional Spookt The Great Pumpkin Cheese Ball PREP TIME: 5 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 35-65 MINUTES TOOLS • • • • •

Large bowl Cutting board Large knife Medium bowl Spatula or large spoonn

HINT The great pumpkin cheese ball can be made with any cheese you like. I chose cheddar cheeses because it’s the same color as a pumpkin, but I’d encourage you to experiment!

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

1/2 cup of whipped cream cheese 1/2 cup of sharp cheddar spreadable cheese (pub cheese) 1 cup of shredded sharp cheese 2 bell peppers, sliced (stem saved for the top of the pumpkin) Crackers Pretzels Carrots Cucumbers, sliced

Directions Alright little monsters, let’s get cooking! In a large bowl, combine the gooey cream cheese, pub cheese and shredded cheese with a spatula (let your child help mix the cheeses). Lay a piece of plastic wrap on a hard surface and scoop the cheese mixture onto the plastic wrap. Using your hands (have your kiddo help too!) slowly cover the cheese mixture and form a ball. Place it in the fridge to harden for 30 minutes to an hour. While the cheese ball is in the fridge, cut the stem from one of the peppers and set aside. You’ll use this as the stem of the pumpkin. Prepare the rest of the snacks, and have your little one help you place the snacks on your serving dish. After the pumpkin cheese ball has hardened, place it on the serving dish and add the pepper stem to the top. Enjoy!

tacular Recipes Hi, friends!

I’m Marina from marinamakesblog.com. Halloween is all about the treats, and I’ve put together some BOO-tiful foods to get you in the spirit! The first is a pumpkin cheeseball that you can enjoy with veggies, crackers, and other fun snacks. My daughter and I had a lot of fun making this recipe together. It’s easy and delicious. I also included my recipe for spooktacular chocolate-covered Oreos. These cute little monsters are the perfect treat to enjoy at home or share with friends. I’d encourage you to involve your kids in the process of cooking whether you have them stir, add food to the pot or bowl, or just taste test. I’ve included specific ways they can help in the directions section. I hope you have fun cooking together! I’d love to see how your spooktacular food turns out, so please feel free to share pictures on social media. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #MarinaMakesEats.

Happy eating!

Spooky Chocolate Covered Oreos PREP TIME: 15 MINUTES TOTAL TIME: 15-30 MINUTES

Ingredients •

Package of Oreos

10 to 20 ounces of white baking chocolate (depending on how many treats you want to make)

Edible googly eyes

Directions To make the spooky Oreos, melt the white chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals until completely melted. Use caution, the chocolate might be hot! Let your little goblin dip the Oreos in the white chocolate quickly and cover completely. Place the Oreos on the parchment paper to cool and harden. Before the chocolate hardens, have your child add sprinkles and googly eyes.

Spooktacular Art

Hopefully you all made it through your spiders & ghosts obstacle course! Next, it’s time to create a spooky masterpiece with the help of our friends at The Art Nook in Aiken, South Carolina.

Supplies Needed: black, pink, blue & gray markers, chalk pastels, tissue, 6 x 9 drawing paper.

Steps: In this spooky masterpiece, your little one(s) will learn to draw a Halloween scene filled with a little glimpse of a haunted house with a ghost peeking out, along with a silhouette of a tree and another ghost and—of course—a full moon. course—a full moon. 1. Using a black marker, draw the haunted house. At the top of the paper, leave about an inch of room, and start by drawing a horizontal straight line for the top of the roof. The inch of room is left at the top so you can add some cool architectural details later. A 2. Draw an angled line from the first line to create more of the roof. B 3. Draw another horizontal line to finish the roof. 4. Go in slightly from the roof and draw a vertical line three-quarters down the paper. 5. Draw a horizontal line to start the top of the other roof. C 6. From that horizontal line, draw an angled line. 7. Draw another horizontal line to finish this roof. D 8. Go in a little and draw 2 vertical lines down the paper to complete the house. E

Details of the haunted house: 1. Draw five little triangles just above the top of the roof, and color them in with the black marker. 2. Draw straight lines down from the triangles to the top of the roof. Add curved lines to connect them. F 3. Draw a spiral line underneath the first roof on each side of the house. 4. Draw about six small circles from one end of the spiral to the other. These are just some fun architectural details, feel free to venture off into your own haunted house world for these details! G 5. Draw a thin “rainbow” line for each of the windows. Close those lines with a straight horizontal line. More lines inside the windows can be added to create window panes. H

Ghosts, moon, and tree: 1. Draw the first ghost peeking out from the house by creating a curved line under the roof. 2. Add small circles for eyes and an oval for the mouth. The ghost’s eyes and mouth will need to be colored in with the marker. I 3. Draw a large circle to create the moon popping out from behind the house (remember that some of the moon should be hiding behind the house). This is a great opportunity to talk about how artists demonstrate how some things are “in front of” or “behind” other things to show dimension in a picture! J 4. Start to draw the tree by beginning at the bottom of your paper. Be sure to leave enough room to add another peeking ghost. K 5. Notice that this silhouetted tree is just a series of curved lines that are thin at the tips and thicker at the branches and the trunk. You can add more twigs and branches if you’d like. 6. Add the other peeking ghost by drawing a thin “rainbow” line coming from the right side of the tree. 7. Draw two small circles for eyes and an oval for the mouth. Color these in with the black marker. L Add Color: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Use the gray marker to color the roof of your haunted house. Use the pink marker to color your house. M Use the blue marker to color the inside of your windows. Use the black marker to carefully color your entire tree because it is a silhouette. 5. Use the yellow chalk pastel for the moon. When using pastels, use the flat side instead of the tips. Using the sides of the pastels will give you a nice, smooth color. Using the tips creates hard lines that are more difficult to blend. N 6. Use a little bit of the light orange on the outside of the moon to create depth. 7. Blend these colors together with your finger or the included tissues. 8. Color your night sky with both pieces of blue chalk pastels and blend them with your fingers and/or the included tissues. O 9. Add some white to your ghosts with the white chalk pastel. To make the ghost by the tree look somewhat “transparent,” take the white pastel and “scribble” the white on the other side of the tree. 10. Use a clean tissue to wipe up any chalk that may have found its way onto your tree or anywhere else.

Take a moment to admire your spoo ky masterpiece. Rein force the concepts of perspective and de pth with your little one(s).

Here are some jokes to enjoy while you and your little one(s) are chowing down on the spooky snack you just created!

What do ghosts drink when they are thirsty? (Ghoul-Aid) What do you call a witch that lives on a beach? (A “sand” witch) What does a skeleton say before dinner? (“Bone” appetit!) Which ghost is the best dancer? (The boogie man) What do you call witches who live together? (“broom” mates)

Dancing With a Ghost To set the mood for this haunting dance activity, access your custom Spotify playlist at nightinboxes.com/music for some Spooktacular tunes!

Supplies Needed: Tissue paper squares, balloon, black marker, custom playlist, child- friendly scissors (not included)

Instructions Step One: Start by cutting your tissue paper into the shape of a ghost. Once you have cut out your ghost, using your included black marker, decorate your ghost by giving him a spooky face!

Step Two: Blow up the included balloon. Now it is time to create a static

charge by rubbing your balloon on the nearest head of hair or rug that you can find.

Step Three: Hold the static-charged balloon over the ghost and you will begin to see the ghost show off some of his or her favorite dance moves. Give your ghost a name and make him dance!

How Does My Ghost Dance? Is It Magic? When your balloon is rubbed against human hair or a carpet, electrons are transferred from the hair or carpet to the latex balloon. This process causes the balloon to have a net negative charge. When your balloon is placed close to your ghost, which has a net neutral charge, the negatively charged balloon pulls the positively charged protons in the ghost toward it. This pull creates an attractive force, allowing you to lift the ghost with the balloon and make it dance!
