Nijhuis Industries NEWS I www.nijhuisindustries.com

Dear customers and business partners, “The 5th April 2019 will be a milestone date for Nijhuis Industries as it will mark the 115 year anniversary of the company starting business and preparations for this important event have already started. The company was founded by G.J. Nijhuis and its roots were in the agricultural food industry in the eastern part of the Netherlands. Even at this early stage, G.J. Nijhuis understood the importance of manufacturing high quality products in their own workshop. Over the last 114 years, the company has emerged as a powerhouse for the manufacture and installation of sustainable water use and resource recovery technologies, serving clients in over 120 countries.

Putting innovation into practice Many qualities have remained consistent from the start of the company - the entrepreneurial spirit, the desire to design and deliver the best solution, the vast knowledge and experience, the manufacturing skills and the drive to continuously adapt to the ever-demanding customer requirements and market demands. One of the biggest challenges has been to consistently put innovation into practice. However, we feel that our global clientele has never been so receptive to implement our highly innovative products, game changing solutions and added-value services. We use our adaptive and flexible approach to help our clients turn their (waste)water into value by reducing their environmental footprint and life-cycle cost. This approach has simultaneously been a strong foundation of our continued success as well as an expectation from customers in today’s fluid world.

GLocal Network

Become more resilient for climate change However, Nijhuis Industries is not alone in feeling the sense of urgency to implement sustainable change. We are finding sustainability high on the agenda in every sector that we work in. City authorities, utilities, industries, urban developers, planners, architects, governments and investors are working collectively to implement smarter solutions to become more resilient for climate change, respect water scarcity, reduce their environmental footprint and make their own contribution to the circular economy.

Smart Plant Philosophy Operating in this environment also comes with a duty to continuously improve. The recent installation of a roof top solar park, with a capacity of almost 400 Mwh, at our headquarters is making a significant impact. Equally important will be the record number of innovations and added value services that we are introducing to the market. For example, the Nijhuis Smart Plant philosophy, including i-MONITORING, which will be on show again at the upcoming IFAT in Munich. Another example of how we are helping our customers to reduce, reuse and recover and to lower their life-cycle cost at the same time.

A source of inspiration All of our team members, including myself, are looking forward to meeting you in person in order to develop together the best and most economical solution for any of your challenges and we sincerely hope that this edition of Nijhuis NEWS can be a source of inspiration!” Very best regards, Menno M. Holterman, CEO, on behalf of the Nijhuis Industries team

Is the highest dry solids content always the best performance indicator of a sludge dewatering system?

Page | 6

Nijhuis Screw Press (NSP) Many people believe that the higher dry solids content in the cake means better performance of sludge dewatering. But, is this true? Is this justified? Meet Asdomar, a leading fish processing company in Italy who has proven that the Nijhuis Screw Press (NSP) contributes to their total process stability. Asdomar has been able to reduce the excess sludge volume from approx. 60 m3 per day to less than 1 m3 per day in average with the NSP. The separated liquid fraction (centrate) with low solids is sent back to the Nijhuis primary treatment. Therefore, not only the cake with high dry solids content is produced, but also the highest possible quality of centrate is achieved. The total wastewater treatment process stability is possible to achieve by the NSP flexible configuration. The NSP system is designed with outmost care to meet customer requirements. High solids capture rate is the key parameter in our design. Not only a high dry solids content in the cake can be achieved, resulting in lower sludge volume, but also high quality centrate will be produced. This way, both of your sludge disposal and centrate treatment costs will go down due to decreasing load into your wastewater treatment process.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS 1. Cost-effective & Flexible sludge dewatering solution 2. No pre-dewatering needed 3. Reduced sludge volume with typical dry solids content of 20% 4. Solids capture of more than 95%, reducing filtrate treatment cost 5. Automatic washing system, reducing operational downtime 6. Adaptable to local requirements and conditions, several units with different sizes are available 7. Low footprint 8. Low flocculant consumption 9. Low energy consumption 10. Low maintenance

Operational excellence with real-time control Nijhuis Intelligent Dosing Control (i-DOSE) From fixed to real-time control To effectively remove solids, COD, NO3-N and PO4-P from wastewater, chemical dosing is applied to comply with the effluent discharge requirements. However, fixed dosing is not generally sophisticated enough to handle the actual day-to-day fluctuations in the wastewater and this can cause additional chemical and energy costs. For example, the COD load in the balance tank increases during production hours and decreases during cleaning. By using an intelligent dosing control system, costs for coagulation, flocculation and neutralization can be substantially reduced, because the system can deal more easily with fluctuations in pollution load.

The i-DOSE philosophy is based on analyzing, controlling and dosing the correct amount of utilities (e.g. chemicals) based on the real-time pollution in the wastewater. The Nijhuis i-DOSE consists of a UV-vis spectrometer, control & algorithm, monitoring system and automatic cleaning mechanism.

i-DOSE facts • Simple, safe and plug-and-play design • Empowered with automatic cleaning mechanism • Real-time control of the process • Robust system

i-DOSE benefits • • • •

Up to 30% savings on chemical consumption Up to 4 hours savings on additional operator’s presence per week Lowest possible maintenance cost due to automatic cleaning process Provides peace of mind

i-DOSE impact • • •

Always compliant to effluent requirements Allows insight into trends of operation More process knowledge and operational stability

Industries • • • •

Poultry slaughterhouses Red meat slaughterhouses Dairy Tertiary treatment for municipal and sewage WWTPs

Applications • • •

Wastewater primary treatment, to save on chemical consumption Wastewater secondary treatment, to save on aeration and energy Wastewater tertiary treatment, to always be compliant to effluent requirements

Page | 7

Nijhuis has designed the “i-DOSE” system to comply with this real-time control process, significantly reducing wastewater operational costs (e.g. chemicals, aeration, energy). The system also allows facilities to be operated at a maximum performance with reduced operator’s presence due to the intelligent dosing philosophy. As well as our existing and proven i-DOSE pre-treatment applications, i-DOSE can also be applied within secondary and tertiary treatments.

tive 1-STEP® filter

On Monday 5 March 2018, Karin Sluis, CEO of Witteveen+Bos and Menno M. Holterman, CEO of Nijhuis Industries, signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing a unique cooperation concerning the worldwide implementation and future development of the 1-STEP® filter.

Waternet - innovator, co-developer and first ever 1-STEP® filter operator Waternet is the water-cycle company for Amsterdam and the surrounding regions. From 2013 onwards, Waternet has operated the first ever 1-STEP® filter at their sewage treatment plant (STP) at Horstermeer (165,000 Population Equivalent). Horstermeer STP is equipped with a full scale 1,550 m3/h 1-STEP® filter which was installed to meet the stringent total nitrogen (5 mg/l) and total phosphorus (0.3 mg/l) limits imposed by the EU Water Framework Directive, whilst also futureproofing Horstermeer STP and enabling it to achieve possible future discharge limits for organic micro pollutants.

About the 1-STEP® filter The 1-STEP® filter is a modular and compact fixed bed activated carbon filter, operated at a relatively high rate downward flow. The 1-STEP® filter combines four treatment processes into one single treatment unit. In addition to the removal of suspended solids by filtration, nitrogen is simultaneously removed via biological denitrification (using a selective carbon source), chemical phosphate and heavy metals are removed by coagulation and flocculation (with a low dose of metal salt), and, if required, organic micro pollutants can be removed by adsorption onto the activated carbon.

Nijhuis Industries NEWS I www.nijhuisindustries.com

Page | 9

The 1-STEP® filter is the most cost-effective total tertiary treatment solution to improve the effluent quality of municipal sewage treatment plants. This revolutionary and game-changing treatment step, treats total suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, organic micro-pollutants and medical residues, all at the same time. The 1-STEP® filter combines four processes in a single treatment unit, ensuring a compact, robust, reliable and cost-effective effluent polishing solution to enable both a cleaner and protected environment.

Extensive R&D efforts and field test Based on extensive R&D efforts and field tests between 2009-2010, the Horstermeer STP 1-STEP® filter was constructed in 2011 and commissioned in August 2012. This 1-STEP® filter is the result of co-development by various companies involved, financially supported by STOWA and the Water Framework Directive Innovation Program. After it was put into operation on January 1st, 2013, it has been tested extensively under various load conditions, different water qualities, and across the full range of seasonal Netherlands’ weather events. The filter has been designed to treat up to 1.3 times the dry weather flow of the STP, whilst removing total nitrogen levels down to 2.2 mg/l and total phosphorous levels down to 0.18 mg/l; the lowest phosphorous level so far in practice. The successful implementation of the 1-STEP® filter at Horstermeer STP resulted in a 30-50 % saving in investment and operational costs when compared to conventional, successive processes.

Next generation of modular Open Flotation units Nijhuis Open Flotation (NOF) For decades the Nijhuis Dissolved Air flotation unit has been known as the most robust and best DAF unit available on the market. However, in response to variations in industrial activity and customers’ requirements to quickly and efficiently relocate production facilities, Nijhuis has now redesigned their current Open Flotation unit concept into an even more efficient and modular system than before. The Nijhuis Open Flotation (NOF) system is based on the innovative and intelligent aeration system (i-AERATION) which forms fine air bubbles for the separation of particles, designed for handling high solids loadings. The unit separates suspended solids, oil and greases and coagulated and flocculated particles to clean effluent and a dry solids content of approx. 7%.

In the Nijhuis flotation unit the separable particles will float to the surface. The floating particles will be removed automatically and continuously by a scraper mechanism. An open unit design to create an optimal surface area to remove large amount sludge from the (waste) water. The on-built i-AERATION recirculation system & aeration system is equipped with unique and patented non-clogging aeration devices and will form very fine air bubbles who will support the separation of particles.

Customer benefits: •

“Turn your wastewater into BOTANIC Value Nijhuis Industries & Organica FCR Botanical Garden facilities

The attractive look and feel of the botanical garden solution further enhances this, as the facility can be used not just as a WWTP but also as a scientific, educational, and recreational space for the community. This provides a botanical garden solution utility, far beyond just efficient wastewater treatment enabling it to be located virtually anywhere, which is why it was chosen for this critical project.

Page | 12

Generally, when people think of conventional wastewater treatment, they envisage large concrete buildings located far from population centres, with big open basins emitting foul odours. With the integration of the botanical garden solution from Organica FCR into the Nijhuis portfolio, we are changing this perception and can now, offer our customers a complete WWTP solution which is compact, odourless, garden-like and produces a high quality, reusable, effluent.

Nijhuis Industries NEWS I www.nijhuisindustries.com

Botanic Applications Municipal Treatment Plant The botanic garden is a perfect solution for the unique wastewater treatment challenges facing today’s municipalities. The combination of a small geographic footprint, lower energy consumption, and enhanced treatment characteristics offers a compelling value given the financial difficulties faced by so many cities and towns across the world. With an attractive greenhouse design and none of the typical wastewater treatment plant odor a botanical can be located virtually anywhere, reducing infrastructure costs and offering the potential to become a new kind community building, a place for environmental education, recreation, and quiet enjoyment

Municipal Plant upgrades

A botanical graden WWTP transforms these unattractive, foul-smelling, deteriorating, obsolete WWTPs into odor-free botanical gardens. Upgrading a conventional WWTP to a botanical garden is quite seamless and requires very little civil work.

Page | 13

In developed economies, much of the wastewater infrastructure is aging well beyond its original life or operating in excess of its rated capacity. Many WWTPs are failing to meet increasingly strict effluent requirements, resulting from authorities’ efforts to ensure no hazardous contaminants are discharged into the rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Holiday & Leisure applications Hotels and resorts are increasingly looking to their own wastewater treatment and recycling solutions. These businesses waste thousands of liters of drinking water every day on sprinkler systems, cooling towers, toilet flushing and other non-potable needs.

plant for r u o y t c le Se garden ic n a t o b r u yo

With the space and cost-efficient botanical garden solutions these businesses can place a WWTP directly on site, replacing the need to pump wastewater to a far-off utility company and using recycled effluent in place of drinking water. This drives significant cost savings and also serves as a valuable marketing tool to an increasingly environmentally conscious consumer base

Water reuse example in industrial wastewater

The background After a successful water reuse pilot trial in July 2017, L’Oréal commissioned Nijhuis as its partner to build one of the most modern and state-of-the-art water reuse plants at its Warsaw factory. During the pilot study, Nijhuis proved its credentials as a partner by deploying the highest level of technological support and application knowledge across the complex scope of the turnkey project.

Solution Nijhuis designed a complete water treatment solution which covers the civil works and technology, consisting of filtration, flocculation, flotation, MBR treatment, reverse osmosis and dewatering system. Due to the selection of the proposed design, the customer will reuse almost 50% of water from 400 m3 wastewater per day.

The reused water will be used by the production plant to wash manufacturing tools and cooling processes. To meet the customer demands, the teams of L’Oréal and Nijhuis developed, in close consultation, not only an installation which will be future-proofed, but also designed an attractive operators’ building which fits into the environment of the production facility of L’Oréal.

CUSTOMER BENEFITS 1. Almost 50% of wastewater reuse to wash manufacturing tools and cooling processes 2. High-tech water reuse solution, based on the experienced Nijhuis application knowledge 3. Successful pilot trial to prove the hightech concept 4. Improved sustainability and green image with reduced water footprint

Page | 15

L’Oreal has a history of success when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions, having made a 50% reduction between 2005 and 2015. Now, at one of its largest factories, the global cosmetics company wants to proceed further in reducing the environmental footprint of its production plant. As well as reducing waste quantities, L’Oréal has committed to a 60% reduction in water consumption, per finished product, by 2020 (using a 2005 baseline). Achieving this ambitious goal is only possible by optimization of water consumption and by recycling water on site.

FROM WASTE TO TASTE Creating the necessities of life with Circular Sanitation Hubs Nijhuis WASTE-TO-TASTE

Page | 16

Following the sixth Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations, everyone should have access to clean drinking water and hygienic sanitation in 2030. To respond to this goal, Nijhuis Industries together with several partners (like Semilla Sanitation Hubs) has developed a cost-efficient solution with no or low environmental impacts, which not only processes human urine and faeces, but also recovers required nutrients. Nijhuis WASTE-TO-TASTE is a circular sanitation hub solution for remote places and disaster areas. The solution utilises advanced space technology and includes modular ‘plugand-play’ technology building blocks such as grey, black and urine water treatment which collectively offer more than 30% in water savings. The completely self-sufficient solution turns waste (grey, black and yellow water) into taste (food & drinks) and continues the global trend towards a circular economy.

The WASTE-TO-TASTE circular sanitation hub firstly provides hygienic toilets and washing facilities and secondly closes the food&drink chain loop, by providing on-site drinking water and organic fertilizer for food production. Additionally, the hub is also portable and can be used anywhere on earth to give between 500 to 400.000 people acces to safe sanitation.

EGYPT-SOUTH PORT SAID INDUSTRIAL ZONE Project update On 1 October 2017 Nijhuis Industries and Green Valley Oil Services (GVOS) commenced design of a 60,000 m3 per day Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Alongside this engineering design work, supporting pilot plant trials were conducted on the actual wastewater in the Industrial Zone of Port Said. These trials confirmed the original design, however provided opportunities to improve the scope distribution over the 2 project phases.

Feasibility study update GVOS and their civil engineering consultant have worked extensively in January and February 2018 on the foundation design required for the complete plant. Additional examination of the soil conditions by Fugro, proved that the soil conditions were weaker than expected. With the support of the Dutch company ABT, several foundation options have been evaluated and tested to overcome the very weak soil conditions in Port Said. Based on the revised and increased civil scope, GVOS is currently completing the actualized feasibility study necessary to finalise the funding of the project.during . Nijhuis Industries plans to start procurement in July 2018 and expects to be able to treat 35,000 m3/day in July 2019 and 60,000 m3/day in July 2020.

Nijhuis Industries NEWS I www.nijhuisindustries.com

Page | 17

It was decided to build the project in 2 phases of each 35,000 m3 per day. The plant incorporated Nijhuis drum screen filtration and DAF treatment (High Rate i-DAF) followed by Nijhuis BIOCTOR aerobic treatment and during the second phase extended to a capacity of 60,000 m3/day including Nijhuis an-aerobic biological treatment, sludge digestion & biogas treatment. The biogas will be used to feed gas engines to produce power and become energy neutral.

Multidisciplinary project team In close cooperation with GVOS, a combined project team of 40 dedicated engineers from Nijhuis Industries, Witteveen+Bos and key suppliers created a complete Basic Engineering Package within a period of 3 months.

Effective N-recovery from concentrated ammonia streams

Nijhuis AECO-NAR

Page | 18

Due to high ammonia concentrations in manure and sludge digesters, water treatment and manure treatment facilities are facing a number of operational challenges. These challenges consist of reduced biogas production, high discharge cost of the centrate/ digestate and increased investment and operational cost for additional biological treatment of the concentrated ammonia stream. For effective N-recovery from concentrated ammonia streams, the Nijhuis AECO-NAR is a solid solution which removes ammonia from digestate and produces ammonia sulphate, a valuable recovered fertilizer. The market potential for this recovered product, depends on the region and has potential to replace artificial fertilizer for balanced fertilization. Depending on the application, removing the ammonia of the liquid fraction of the digestate with the AECO-NAR results in the following customer benefits:

Customer benefits:

Applications:

• •

• •

Improve downstream and/or post process treatments. Proven removal efficiency of more than 80% of ammonia. Higher biogas production when centrate water will be reused to dilute the substrate. Reduced discharge cost to discharge the water to the sewer or river. Optimized ratio between COD and nitrogen, ensuring no carbon source is needed to remove the remaining nitrogen via aerobic water treatment. A valuable liquid end product by not oxidizing nitrogen, like other conventional technologies are doing, but recover this into ammonium sulphate.

• •

Manure - from ammonium nitrate to ammonia sulphate to produce clean water and/or reduce. the ammonium concentration in the manure. Side stream centrate treatment of industrial and municipal AD facilities. Improvement of municipal or industrial anaerobic digester performances.

AECO-NAR solution at a dairy farmer in Belgium Last March, members of VCM (a Belgium Coordination Center for Manure Processing) visited our innovative AECO-NAR solution at a dairy farmer in Belgium. For effective N-recovery from concentrated ammonia streams, the Nijhuis AECO-NAR is a solid solution which removes ammonia from manure and produces ammonia sulphate, a valuable recovered fertilizer.

Fat recovery from industrial wastewater as biofuel Nijhuis AECO-FAT Flotation sludge challenges Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is often applied to treat industrial wastewater containing high oil & grease by which TSS removal of 45-70% and oil & grease removal of 50-80% can be achieved without chemicals.

How can fat be recovered from the wastewater? Fat can be recovered with Nijhuis AECO-FAT, a total sludge management solution including a dissolved air flotation unit, followed by a disconnector and separation into a liquid fat, a water and a solids fraction.

As sludge minimization is a very important concept in wastewater treatment, we developed several profitable business cases based on the incoming and outgoing requirements, operational costs and capital investment costs.

What is flotation sludge? Flotation sludge is a mixture of water, solids and fat. When treating wastewater, primary treatment is needed to reduce the solids and fat content in the water. Course solids can be filtered from the water by using the Nijhuis patented NTF rotating filter or Nijhuis Aquarake. Fats passing through the filter together with the water can be separated by the unique and reliable Nijhuis DAF systems which will generate flotation-sludge.

How to separate flotation sludge? After the DAF system, heating is the first step in the process where all the fat is liquefied. The second and third step are to separate the solids and water. Separation techniques such as a tricanter are required to guarantee a thorough separation of all three phases and substantially increase the yield of fat.

How to add value from the recovered fat? The separated water will flow back to the wastewater treatment plant, whereas the separated solids-proteins can be utilized as fertilizer. The separated fat obtained can be used for various value-added purposes such as fuel for steam boilers or biofuel. The fat is also a trade-commodity with a high value.

Nijhuis Industries NEWS I www.nijhuisindustries.com

Page | 19

However, fat which is part of the dry matter constituent in the sludge, is often neglected, even though it has high potential as an economically valuable resource such as heating fuel, biofuel, cosmetics, and/or cosubstrate for anaerobic digestion.

This way, an economical value has been added to the recovered product. With the recovery of fat, the Nijhuis AECO-FAT solution converts flotation sludge into valuable products and saves sludge disposal and chemical costs.
