The 115 year celebration of Nijhuis is a very special moment in our company history. On 5th of April 1904 Gerrit Jan Nijhuis founded ‘Machinefabriek G.J. Nijhuis’, initially a repair workshop for textiles, dairy and slaughterhouse equipment which later expanded to design and manufacture generators, motors and iron equipment. We are hugely inspired by the entrepreneurship of our founders and share the same passion and vision to satisfy our clients, by supplying high quality solutions. Innovation has always played a very important role in our company history and is increasingly one of the most crucial ways to address the growing need for clean water. The very warm summers and floods in many parts of the world, have clearly shown the vulnerability of our eco-system and the immediate effect of climate change. To solve some of these challenges, radical changes have to be implemented to guarantee today’s population a minimum welfare and increase the living standards for billions of people across the world. Access to clean water and air, healthy food, renewable energy and zero waste are essential to secure 9 billion people an improved quality of life. Climate change, floods, droughts and biodiversity however, are having a major impact on the living conditions of millions of people; not only those living in water scarce areas, but also the vast majority of people migrating to the heavily dense cities, regions and delta’s around the world. Access to clean, safe and affordable water is fundamental, however the recent droughts in many areas around the world have also shown that ‘every drop counts’!

During the first Nijhuis Industries Waste to Wealth Summit, which is organized to celebrate 115 years of Nijhuis, we will not only focus on the different SDG goals related to water, food, energy and industry, but focus even more on SDG 17 to build coalitions and partnerships achieving the 2030 goals and create more impact during the years to come! Over the last 115 years people have always been our most important asset. NIJHUIS CELEBRATES 115 YEARS More than 115 years ago, Gerrit Jan Nijhuis started a small machine factory in Winterswijk, located in the east of the Netherlands. G.J. Nijhuis was born in 1877 in Boekelo and grew up on a farm called “den Els”. After having discovered his talent for forging and repairing machines he established “Machinefabriek (Machine factory) Nijhuis-De Wolf” together with his business partner Mr. Wolf in 1896. After eight years, their partnership came to an end and on 5th of April 1904 he started “Machinefabriek (Machine factory) G.J. Nijhuis” in Winterswijk. The workshop offered repairs for textile, dairy and slaughterhouse equipment. In 1917 he expanded the factory with a foundry, which enabled the company to design its own generators, motors and other iron equipment.
1920 - 1960:
Focus on designing and manufacturing slaughterhouse equipment During the mid-twenties the company gradually applied more focus on designing and manufacturing slaughterhouse equipment. In 1927, Nijhuis provided the local slaughterhouse in Winterswijk with the latest state-of-the-art slaughterhouse technology, a unique piece of equipment in the Netherlands back then. In the 1930s Nijhuis introduced a new division aimed at repairing, designing and manufacturing Nijhuis pumps. G.J. Nijhuis proved to be a great inventor and was personally responsible for the introduction of the self-priming centrifugal pump. Nijhuis pumps continued to grow in popularity, particularly in the shipping and fire pump industry, where the Nijhuis name became a household brand for decades. After World War II the population of The Netherlands was on the rise again, which had an impact on the demand for food and slaughterhouses. This development, in combination with the company’s engineering experience, encouraged Nijhuis to continue to expand and build a reputation for itself in the field of pumps and slaughterhouse equipment.
1960 - 1980:
A critical eye on water treatment The growing demand for the purification of wastewater in slaughterhouses in the sixties and seventies, led to the development of the Augias bandfilter and flotation system. Capable of separating solids from slaughterhouse wastewater, the newly developed system was able to meet the discharge requirements imposed by the government. The flotation system was an idea originally inspired by the oil industry. In 1977, Machinefabriek G.J. Nijhuis employed 200 employees across three divisions: Pumps, Slaughter Technique and Wastewater. Each division had their own symbol and specialized in the engineering, manufacturing and delivery of products across a wide range of industries. The idea behind the company’s logo, showing the Nijhuis eye, was also established during this time. It meant to visualize “a critical eye on water treatment”.

1980 - 1993:
Nijhuis Water division and Nijhuis Water Technology To allow the company to specialize further and meet the growing demand for purifying wastewater, Nijhuis started the Nijhuis Water division, aimed at developing wastewater technologies to accommodate for a new range of other markets at the end of the seventies and eighties. The GDF (the Gerrit Drupsteen Flotation unit) and IPL (Inclined Plate Lamella separator) were developed during this period, as well as the temporary wastewater rental solutions. In 1983 Nijhuis Slaughterhouse technique moved to Lichtenvoorde and Nijhuis Water B.V. relocated to the Rondweg (Hal Zuid) in Winterswijk, with its own production facility. Throughout the mid-eighties Nijhuis Pumps separated altogether, which resulted in Nijhuis Water and Nijhuis Slaughter Technique operating as separate entities.
Expansion of primary and secondary treatment technologies Nijhuis Water continued to expand its wastewater technologies in primary and secondary treatment all over the world, under the leadership of G.J. Nijhuis, grandson of the original founder. He was director of Nijhuis Water from the late seventies until 1990. In 1987 Stork acquired Nijhuis Slaughter Technique and after five years the former relationship between the three divisions came to an end. It was also at that time that the business started operating in Poland. In 1996 Nijhuis Water moved from Winterswijk to Dinxperlo with approximately 40 employees, under the new name of “Nijhuis Water Technology” (NWT). The Dinxperlo office provided Nijhuis with its own production facility for the in-house production of robust stainless-steel wastewater solutions, such as the famous dissolved air flotation system.
1996 - 2010:
Introduction of a new range of products and services The Dinxperlo era introduced a whole new range of added value services like engineering, project management, manufacturing and service of complete wastewater treatment systems. The company’s expertise continued to grow across a wide range of industries, especially in the oil and gas market, where the famous Nijhuis flocculation-flotation technique was based on the latest safety standards.
The start of creating value from (waste)water At the beginning of 2000, the demand to create value from waste material was growing. To meet this requirement Nijhuis developed the first concept of the AECOMIXTM in Lithuania. In the years that followed waste to value continued to develop itself as an important new theme in the industry. Between 2005 and 2010 Nijhuis opened new offices in Russia and the USA and established a joint venture agreement with H2OK in the United Kingdom. Not only primary and secondary treatment were important for the complete delivery of wastewater treatment plants, Nijhuis developed its own Sand Filter and Carbon Filter for tertiary wastewater treatment and an inside fed rotary filter for primary treatment.

Circular Economy examples Manure treatment facility ‘Groot Zevert’ is producing their first green mineral fertilizer with the Nijhuis GENIUS installation The Nijhuis GENIUS installation at Groot Zevert in Beltrum, the Netherlands, recently started producing clean water and green minerals from manure of pigs and cows. The green mineral fertilizer is a combination of nitrogen and potassium fertilizer from organic manure and can be used as a replacement for artificial fertilizer in the Achterhoek. This region in the Netherlands will become one of first in the world to follow the trend towards a circular economy in the agricultural industry, by using green fertilizers from treated manure and no artificial fertilizers. About GENIUS Nijhuis GENIUS consists of a combination of smart technologies, such as a digester (AECOMIXTMTAURUS), a GEA decanter, flotation technology (Nijhuis DAF), nitrogen stripper (Nijhuis AECO-NAR) and a membrane filtration plant. Depending on the clients and regulatory requirements, a combination of technologies are selected to secure the lowest possible CAPEX and OPEX, maximizing the sustainable PROFIT. GENIUS is a sustainable process because no by products and no waste products will be produced. It is an energy positive solution in combination with digestion and reduces the CO2 footprint due to lower production of chemical fertilizers and reduction in manure or digestate transport. The produced organic rich phosphate fraction, liquid nitrogen fertilizer and the liquid potassium fertilizer can reduce the import of artificial fertilizers for pasture land or arable crops as well as reducing the export of surplus manure.

Nijhuis Industries receives Hygienic Certification for Water Stations to produce drinking water quality In March 2019, Nijhuis Industries received the official hygienic certification from the Polish National Institute of public health and hygiene for universal water treatment and recovery to produce water of drinking water quality. The treatment of water is intended for human consumption; treatment and recovery of production, process, post-process, technical, underground, surface and technological water in the industry. The system is intended for professional installation and operation, with a systematic quality control of treated water within the scope corresponding to its intended use. The scope of subunits is selected according to the quality of raw water and the intended purpose of treated water to the userâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirements. Before the commissioning of the systems, water quality control examination should be performed. The certificated selection of units consists of sand filters (Nijhuis CSF), ultrafiltration (NMS-UF), reverse osmosis (NMS-RO), clean water tanks and ancillary systems. The small pore size of the NMS-UF is not only a superior barrier for viruses and bacteria but also ensures maximum protection of the reverse osmosis unit. The NMS-RO has a maximal system efficiency, due to a smart design based on robust and solid reverse osmosis technology.

Micropollutants removal - improve the water quality Nijhuis Industries, with several partners ozone and ozone-UV solutions, are currently investigating the reduction of micropollutants at different locations. For example, in the municipality in Winterswijk, the Netherlands, a 40-foot ozone and UV container is treating the wastewater of hospital ‘Streekziekenhuis Koningin Beatrix’ to investigate the impact of treating wastewater at the source and not at the municipal wastewater treatment plant. The pilot plant become operational in January 2019 and is now generating data. The project partners have developed a new and smart concept: UVO3. The ultimate goal of this pilot project is to develop a costeffective treatment that can be applied easily as well as being flexible and modular to the treatment demand of the future. Not only hospitals are involved in the project, the entire healthcare sector and chain in the Netherlands are looking forward to the outcomes of the prestigious project. The UVO3 project has been made possible with subsidies from the EU, Gelderland province, Overijssel province and the European Regional Development Fund.

At another location, the Dutch Water Authority ‘Aa & Maas’ is currently conducting pilot research, together with Nijhuis Industries, to investigate whether the removal rate of more than 80% of pharmaceutical residues from municipal wastewater is feasible. The research has a highly scientific nature, to validate which ‘fourth treatment stage’ technology is able to remove pharmaceutical residues and can be applied at full-scale capacity. Currently, several municipal treatment plants in the Netherlands rely on pre-treatment, biological treatment and polishing steps for additional nutrient removal. The ‘fourth treatment stage’ has to ensure that more than 80% of the pharmaceutical residues and other micro pollutants will be removed, improving the ecological environment.processes.”

Nijhuis Industries is awarded to build an ‘all in one’ water treatment pilot plant based on the principles of the circular economy Dutch regional water authority Vallei en Veluwe has given the green light for a next generation water treatment factory for the town of Wilp, in the Netherlands. The new water factory will be an ‘all-inone treatment plant’ and, in a later phase, is likely to partially replace the current ‘Terwolde’ sewage treatment plant. Alongside clean water production, the factory will also recover raw materials and resources. Before the full-scale plant is installed, a 5 m3/h pilot plant will be built and operated for 9 months to prove the feasibility of the innovative idea. As Witteveen+Bos and Royal HaskoningDHV are responsible for the concept development, design and engineering, Nijhuis Industries will supply the complete pilot plant of this innovative water refinery plant. The plant will include a fine screen to recover celluloses, electrocoagulation unit followed by dissolved air flotation to recover organics and phosphorus, direct nanofiltration and an ion exchange unit to recover nitrogen. At the end of last year, the Executive Board of Vallei en Veluwe gave its approval for the plan of the new water factory in Wilp (municipality of Voorst). “It’s a unique concept,” mentioned Bert van Vreeswijk of the water authority. “We have been looking for opportunities and improvements to this new treatment concept together with Witteveen+Bos over the past year. I’m glad to say that we have given the approval to build an ‘all in one’ water factory, based on the principles of the circular economy. ‘Being Circular in 2050’; By installing the water factory, the water authority is taking an important step towards being fully circular by 2050. This includes the separate collection and processing of sewage and rainwater. In the future, rainwater will no longer be treated within the sewage water treatment system. The majority of purified water from the water factory is used to improve the water quality of the ‘Twellose’ creek but water reuse for industries, agriculture and leisure activities seems possible. Additionally, the new water factory removes 75% more nitrogen and phosphate from the polluted water in comparison to a conventional sewage water treatment. The aim is also to remove 80% of the pharmaceutical
residues, produce 90% less residual streams and use no coagulation and flocculation chemicals. Pilot project and cooperation The Vallei en Veluwe Water Authority is working together with the municipality of Voorst, the Province of Gelderland and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. They also cooperate with companies like Attero and Schoneveld Breeding and knowledge partners Aquaminerals, STOWA and Wageningen University & Research (WUR). Witteveen+Bos, Royal HaskoningDHV and Nijhuis Industries will first produce a pilot with the water authority to test whether the innovative idea is feasible and work on the further improvement of the design of the installation.

Nijhuis Innovation! - i-NEC (Electrocoagulation) The new pilot plant will include one of the latest Nijhuis innovations, the Nijhuis i-NEC. Currently many industrial companies and municipalities are facing challenges in treating their wastewater in an environmentally friendly manner, reaching high effluent quality sufficient for discharge or even with a possibility for reuse, therefore contributing to the global water crisis. At present, electricity prices in certain regions around the world are being reduced, thus promoting electrical-driven rather than chemical-consuming process applications. The i-NEC is designed to compete with the current chemical-intensive processes as well as with the conventional electrocoagulation systems. The reactor is distinguished with its advanced design of a closed system operated free of foam formation and gases build-up. i-NEC is unique with the short residence time of just a few seconds, thus resulting in a small footprint and the possibility to treat large amounts of wastewater.

Nijhuis Industries developments in
Central Europe
High effluent quality is discharged daily in Tirgu Mures river, Romania due to experienced Nijhuis i-MONITORING service engineers Since 1 January 2016, Nijhuis i-MONITORING service engineers have been monitoring the influent, process and effluent of the Azomures wastewater treatment. Every day, almost 22,000 m3 of clean water is discharged into the Tirgu Mures river. In July 2014, Nijhuis won the contract to deliver a large turnkey wastewater treatment project for Azomures S.A. In November 2015, the civil works were accepted and specially adopted seeding sludge was introduced to achieve optimal growth and adaptation of the bacteria in the biological system. The WWTP was commissioned mid November 2015.

According to Karel Ratering, Process Support & Data Analyst from the Nijhuis i-MONITORING team: "Every day we receive valuable information of the status of the installation. The installation is connected via our in-house NI-CONNECT router with our i-MONITORING center at Nijhuis Industries Headquarters in the Netherlands. The data we received includes wastewater parameters, energy consumption, chemical consumption and production of excess sludge. We analyze the data with daily reports generated, to see whether there are any notable changes in comparison to previous periods. We communicate and discuss the results with the client and in cases where necessary, we adjust the installation from our i-MONITORING center with remote control. With the wastewater of Azomures containing a large amount of total nitrogen, the installation is currently meeting and even exceeding the discharge limits with a total nitrogen reduction of more than 95%!
The client also communicates with us in case there is a change in the production process in the months to come. These changes in the production process have a major impact on the installation, because an additional amount or reduced amount of wastewater and/or pollution is produced. Since biological treatment plants are very sensitive to these changes, you need to find the correct balance between the excess sludge and return sludge to guarantee the best living conditions for this type of sludge. Based on the experienced level of wastewater treatment knowledge we have at Nijhuis, we can make the decision to adjust the settings of an installation correctly, to ensure a large-scale WWTP installation like Azomures is not only discharging 22.000 m3 per day of clean water but also optimizes their operational expenses. This setting change can include, for example, the dosing of chemicals or energy for the aeration of the biological treatment."

Nijhuis smart and sustainable engineering principles ensured the awarding of a modular wastewater treatment plant Aflofarm is one of the largest and most recognizable pharmaceutical companies in Poland, operating in health care for almost thirty years with their products available in 30 countries throughout the world. Over this time, the client released over 115 product brands and became the leader of prescripted and OTC drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and dietary supplements. Project background Many years of operation and sustainable growth of the company made the client decide to search for an environmentally friendly technology for their wastewater discharged into the sewer system. New WWTPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s will be executed for two locations and the next projects are expected in the near future. From the technological point of view, for both locations, Nijhuis delivers two similar installations. At first, wastewater is primarily treated on a rotary screen NTF where it is directed to a 2-stage biological system (BIOCTOR-MBBR, including NI-BIOCHIP carrier material) and flocculation/flotation installation. In one plant treated water is discharged via sewer to the municipal WWTP, while in the other plant, due to lack of connection to the sewer, treated water is transported daily directly to the municipal WWTP by trucks. Due to the very limited space, the flocculation-flotation installation will be positioned in the container. Nijhuis was the only company able to deliver a complete wwtp, that fits the available area. Sludge from both installations will be dewatered with the Nijhuis Screw Press (NSP) in one of the plants. The sludge will be transported to a nearby sludge management installation for dewatering.

Since the awarding of the contact for the reuse installation last year, the project is currently in a final engineering phase, whilst the manufacturing of the units is also facing final production. The reuse installation is a real breakthrough within the meat industry, and will meet game-changing sustainability goals. 8000 m3 wastewater per day will not be discharged into the river, but reused as a valuable resource for inhouse purposes in the production facility. The plant will be one of the largest industrial water reuse solutions in the world. The installation will be implemented in two stages, each of 4000 m3 per day. Since 2012, Nijhuis have implemented several treatment stages to meet more stringent effluent river discharge limits. These solutions have included pre-treatment and aerobic treatment for the wastewater, as well as anaerobic and dewatering solutions to treat the produced sludge and recover energy. The new polishing and reuse systems consists of a sand filter, ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis system.
Combination of membrane solutions to reuse water For the final treatment of wastewater into reusable water, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis units are currently in construction at the Nijhuis manufacturing facility in Doetinchem. For phase 1, the plant will consist of 4 reverse osmosis and 4 ultrafiltration units. The small pore size of the NMS-UF (NI-UFM-MAX-200-15) is not only a superior barrier for viruses and bacteria, but also ensures maximum protection of the reverse osmosis. The NMS-RO has a maximal system efficiency due to a smart design, based on robust and solid reverse osmosis technology.

New Nijhuis wastewater treatment plants for Meat processing companies in Mordovia
Nijhuis will supply a complete wastewater treatment in Primorye, which is located 100 km from Vladivostok. This pig processing plant belongs to the one of Russia’s largest vertically integrated agricultural holding companies. It is currently the market leader in sugar, pork, crop, oil and fats production. The project consists of equipment with a capacity of 1100 m3/day and will include piping and cabling, all of which will be shipped to site.
Two meat processing enterprises located in Mordovia will treat their wastewater with a Nijhuis Industries installation. The projects include the design and equipment supply to treat 3000 m3 and 3800 m3 per day. The wastewater treatment plants are fully equipped treatment systems, including i-DOSE and Scada monitoring for both sites. Nijhuis have already delivered the equipment, piping and cabling for the first site and is currently installing the equipment, while the supply to the second site is underway.

Wastewater MODULUTION is currently being installed for a dairy factory Nijhuis is currently installing a modular wastewater treatment system for a large dairy client in Russia. The system will be installed in 10 modular boxframes (MODULUTION-Boxframe). Last year Nijhuis Industries finished the pre-engineering and after permit arrangements and approvals, the production of 10 modular boxframes started in January 2019 in Doetinchem and was finalized in March. The boxframes are now transported to the construction site in Russia. Each boxframe is completely designed in a 3D model. This guarantees that all equipment fits in, pipes are not in conflict with the steel structure, electrical panels and cable lengths are pre-installed and supports can already be pre-fabricated and assembled. When the frames arrive on site, the boxframes will be lifted and bolted on a concrete foundation. All piping is already pre-installed and will be plug-and-play connected. This will lead to a short installation time on site with the possibility to work during cold winter months. When the frames are mounted together on site, the structure will be foreseen with insulation panels. The frames are heated and ventilated by a network of piping. Air will be extracted from the equipment and blown outside through a bio-filter. This filter consists of biomass (wooden chips) that cleans the air from unpleasant smells. This way we keep the installation and environment clean and fresh.

Shopping Mall Wastewater Installation of the botanical wastewater treatment plant for a mega shopping mall is reaching the final stage Since the end of 2018, Nijhuis Industries have been working on, together with technology partner Organica Water, a turn-key botanical wastewater treatment plant treating the wastewater from a mega shopping mall in Russia, Krasnodar. Nijhuis will integrate the Organica Food Chain Reactor (FCR) in a turnkey 1,000 m3/d treatment facility, with advanced Nijhuis pre- and posttreatment technologies. The project is now reaching the final stage of the installation of the plant. The wastewater solution is executed with Nijhuis coarse screening and Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) units and will remove the large particles from the wastewater prior to entering the Organica FCR. After the secondary treatment through the FCR, Nijhuis CarboPure and UV disinfection units will polish the effluent to the stringent Russian discharge requirements. The excess sludge will be treated with a Nijhuis Drum Filter (NDF) and Nijhuis Screw Press (NSP). The Organica FCR, with odorless operation and beautiful flora, is situated in a glass house and ensures the seamless integration of the treatment facility in the urban area within the mall complex, including a botanic garden visitors center. New pre-assembled wastewater treatment plant (MODULUTION) for Poly Recycling, reducing on-site installation work Poly Recycling is one of the most successful plastic-recycling companies in Europe. The company is situated in Weinfelden with approximately 40 employees and has budgeted an output of more than 25,000 tons of plastic recycling in 2015. The raw materials are widely used PET bottles. The raw material is washed automatically in their modern facilities, sorted and extruded into specified granules. Poly Recycling is a supplier and partner of many international plastic processors throughout Europe.
The main goal for the client is to recycle much as possible wash water from the recycling process. With the Nijhuis system, the recycled wash water is solid free and can be reused in the recycling process. The installation was commissioned at the beginning of 2019.
In June 2018, Nijhuis Industries was requested to submit an offer with the best and most economical business case. The offer included a pre-assembled dissolved air flotation to treat appr. 12 mÂł water per hour, including the feed pumps, the chemical treatment and control panel. Due to the tight project schedule from the new recycling plant in Bilten, it was necessary for the client to keep the installation work to a minimum on site. Therefore, Nijhuis offered Poly Recycling a MODULUTIONS-Boxframe solution, with the benefit, that the complete system is already preassembled and tested in the sophisticated Nijhuis Industries workshop.

Municipal saughterhouse at 3,800 meters high will treat the wastewater with Nijhuis Industries plant for the city of La Paz Bolivia Municipality of La Paz has become aware of the importance of the care of water and the environment, so local authorities have decided to invest in the wastewater treatment plant for the municipal slaughterhouse. This type of project will be the first of its kind in the country and will be presented to citizens as an innovative project. The joint work of Visiรณn Moderna and Nijhuis will help to clean the water and take care of the rivers of La Paz. In order to prevent the pollution of the rivers of la Paz, the Municipality has decided to invest in a new plant to treat the water from the slaughterhouse facility in the city. The plant will be executed with state-of-the-art technology and will be installed 3,800 meters above sea level.
The first wastewater treatment of Nijhuis Industries in Bolivia The slaughterhouse WWTP of Achachicala will be the first plant executed by Nijhuis in Bolivia and the first of its kind in the country. Up to 150 cows will be slaughtered daily, which also produces the wastewater. To treat the wastewater, Nijhuis developed a design which consists of a pre-treatment of 20 m3/hr with NTF
200 drum filter and IPF 20 for flocculation and flotation system. The plant will have a BIOCTOR biological system composed of aerated activated sludge with a tank of 50 m3 with bottom aerator. For a better clarification of the water a DAF GDF 3 has been specified. Finally, the water will be disinfected with a NUV and the clean water will be discharged into the river.

Total Wastewater Treatment for Hafan y Môr Park Bourne Leisure is one of the UK’s largest providers of holidays and holiday-home ownership. The Hafan y Môr Holiday Park is a flagship facility for Bourne Leisure, and is one of the biggest holiday parks in the UK. Positioned on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, the Hafan y Môr Park is surrounded by stunning scenery, beaches and coastline.
The treatment system itself comprises of a screen, biological treatment, and solid-liquid separation. Solid particles and grit will be removed by a screening system prior to balance tank system. Flows will then be pumped to the Moving Bed Biological Reactor (MBBR) tanks. The Nijhuis BIOCTOR-MBBR system for Hafan y Môr comprises of two tanks operated in sequence. Any biomass carried over from the MBBR tanks will be removed by a dissolved air flotation system in the form of a sludge. The treated effluent will be discharged.
Hafan y Môr has a population equivalent of 5,200 persons during summer peak periods. A brand new, wastewater treatment plant will be completely designed, installed and operated by Nijhuis Industries to receive and treat all waste-water discharged from the Holiday Park. The new treatment facility will support the sustainable future of the Park and will provide an efficient and high performing solution to preserve the natural beauty of the surrounding ecosystem. All wastewater discharged from the Holiday Park will be transferred to the new wastewater treatment plant. Nijhuis acted as a single point of supply for Bourne Leisure throughout the complete project. Marafiq extended the rental service contract Marafiq collects wastewater from several companies and petro-chemical industries. The wastewater is then collected in aerated lagoons and treated. In 2015, Marafiq needed a fast track solution to treat an additional volume of wastewater for early 2016. To meet the deadline and run the plant starting in January 2016, Marafiq approached Nijhuis and a contract was signed in July 2015 for a three year rental. After successful delivery and cooperation, Marafiq have now decided to extend the rental service contract with Nijhuis Industries. Project history In July 2015, Nijhuis won the contract to deliver a rental installation to Marafiq. Thanks to the standardization and prefabrication of IPF units at the Nijhuis Headquarters in Doetinchem, within 6 months, Nijhuis completed the engineering, procurement, production, transport, customs, site work, installation and the start-up. The installation will be rented for three years and the solution consists of 9 Flocculation units (PFR 100S), 9 Flotation Units (IPF 135), 2 containerized dosing and power distribution systems and 3 decanters. By January 2016 the plant was up and running, thanks to the efforts of the Nijhuis team during the Christmas Holidays.

Business accelerator of Nijhuis Industries ‘Semilla’ is researching the Kenian market to investigate the sustainable profitability of waste-to-taste solution Last February, Business Development Manager ‘Urban Water and Sanitation solutions’ Peter Scheer visited Kenia together at the invitation of the organisation ‘CARE Kenia’ to investigate the feasibility of several projects, based on the current drinking- and wastewater situation. Peter Scheer mentioned: “What I have seen in Kenia made me even more aware of the current situation and the necessity to treat (waste)water and help people in Kenia to have a better access to clean water and drinking water. We have spoken to 5 NGO’s during my trip, to look at sustainable projects and realize a business case. The first calculations are already showing promising results. The solution comprises a smart combination of UV-RO and drum filter technologies. In the first step, surface water is turned into drinking water, and also used for sanitation. Secondly, we treat the wastewater and turn this into irrigation water for food production to close the loop. Currently, the people are using pit-latrines and bush toilets which causes ground water and surface water pollution. To avoid this, we invented and designed for this project a pit-latrine 4.0 concept!”

Oily water separation solution in full operation at a tank terminal in Singapore Since the beginning of 2018, a Nijhuis oily water separation unit is in full operation to treat the oily water of a tank terminal in Singapore. The unit is reducing the incoming total suspended solids by more than 75% and has an effluent discharge guarantee of less than 10 mg/l free oil. The solution comprises a flocculator (PFR 45), flotation (IPF 45) and ancillary equipment, all executed with the requirements for outside installation. A solid solution to treat 40 m3 oily water per hour The wastewater will firstly enter the pipe flocculator which is equipped with special mixing pipes to ensure perfect mixing of the chemicals. Due to the smart engineering principles of Nijhuis, accurate mixing energy and mixing time is achieved inside the flocculator and ensures uniform flock growth during the coagulation and flocculation process
The on-built and patented Nijhuis i-AERATION (recirculation system) is equipped with proprietary/ patented non-clogging aeration devices and its unique design ensures formation of the very fine air bubbles required. The flotation unit includes automatic drain valves for removing any settled material. An in-line monitoring system is installed as a final measuring step, to measure the emulsified and dissolved oil, based on UV spectroscopy technology. The installation is designed to treat 40 m3/hr, 24 hours per day.
After the flocculator unit, the water will enter the flotation unit. The particles/flock will float to the surface and will automatically and continuously be removed by a scraper mechanism. The flotation unit is equipped with a lamella plate pack which increases the separation area and thus ensures that even the smallest flocks are removed from the water.

PARTNER IN THE SPOTLIGHT PROJECT IN AFRICA Nijhuis is currently realizing an integrated, three-step wastewater value chain project together with Gieling and several other business partners in Accra, Ghana to improve the living conditions of 300,000 people. Therus Gieling, owner of GC International, described in the Nijhuis NEWS of January 2019 his personal story of how the project started.
Personal story of Therus Gieling The start of the Green Energy Ghana Project “The reason why I started the project in Ghana is of a personal nature. Previously, one of my children would prefer to play hockey and tennis than go to school. I decided to ask a friendly contact if he could offer a job for my son, so that he could understand how the world actually works. We came up with the idea to send him to Ghana, and to discover in eight weeks how people live in the city of Accra. After a week, he still couldn’t find a toilet in his temporary residence. When he came back, I asked him what he had learned and which profession he would like to choose: “I now understand what social security means, and I would like to become a doctor, after all I have seen and discovered in Accra”, he told me. I asked my friendly contact what he would like as compensation for the experience my son had received. He asked me to help him with a project in Ghana with RVO and the Dutch embassy, to find a solution for the open sewage systems, to build toilets, and to develop a bankable project. I followed his request, free of charge, until RVO granted their permission for the project. Now and years later, I’m very glad and proud we are making progress, and currently constructing the waste-to-value installation together with Nijhuis Industries. I have also become a shareholder of the waste-to-value plant to secure also a proper operation in the future.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
GREEN ENERGY GHANA PROJECT The waste to value project in Ghana, also called the Special Treat Project, is making progress. The project is an integrated, three-step wastewater value chain, developed by several partners, including Nijhuis Industries. The combined system will improve the living conditions of 300,000 people in the Greater Accra region, through improved and sustainable wastewater management. Approximately 50% of the estimated annual faecal sludge generation in these MAs will be treated. The project will install five 30-seater sanitation blocks (plus another 4 after the project duration) in three Municipalities, four 10-seater sanitation blocks at Nsawam Medium Secure Prison, one wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and one wastewater transfer station at each of the project locations. At the WWTP, production facilities for biogas, fertilizer and compost will also be established. The treated water will be reused for agricultural applications, and the sludges will be used for biogas production in locally built digesters. The digested sludge will be composted and sold as fertilizer. The treated water will be applied for agricultural and fish farming. The three-step integrated wastewater value chain consists of a filtration step, hygienisation and two digesters. The site will be completed with a CHP unit, which produce around 350kWh. The public toilet blocks and prison will provide faecal sludge, which is mixed with imported faecal sludge from households, hotels and enclosed compounds, collected by trucks. Cleaning the Indian rivers - From Waste to Wealth Next the current project execution of the Green Energy Ghana Project, Nijhuis is developing in close collaboration with GC International the ‘Waste to Wealth’ in a consortium of Dutch companies. The consortium will firstly develop a successful solution for the Hindon River, which flows between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. The idea behind the concept is to use all kinds of market mechanisms, to be able to treat and clean as much of the waste and water as possible. Landfill, municipal solid waste, industry waste and sludge will all be collectively treated by a ‘waste to value’ plant.

PARTNER IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITTEVEEN+BOS In March 2018, Nijhuis Industries and Witteveen+Bos signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing a unique cooperation concerning the worldwide implementation and future development of the 1-STEP ® filter. The 1-STEP ®filter is one of the most costeffective total tertiary treatment solutions to improve the effluent quality of municipal sewage treatment plants in the world. This revolutionary and game-changing treatment step, treats total suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, organic micro-pollutants and medical residues, all at the same time. The 1-STEP ® filter combines four processes in a single treatment unit, ensuring a compact, robust, reliable and cost-effective effluent polishing solution to enable both a cleaner and protected environment. Waternet - innovator, co-developer and first ever 1-STEP ® filter operator Waternet is the water-cycle company for Amsterdam and the surrounding regions. From 2013 onwards, Waternet has operated the first ever 1-STEP ® filter at their sewage treatment plant (STP) at Horstermeer (165,000 Population Equivalent). Horstermeer STP is equipped with a full scale 1,550 m3/h 1-STEP ® filter which was installed to meet the stringent total nitrogen (5 mg/l) and total phosphorus (0.3 mg/l) limits imposed by the EU Water Framework Directive, whilst also future-proofing Horstermeer STP and enabling it to achieve possible future discharge limits for organic micro pollutants. The three-step integrated wastewater value chain consists of a filtration step, physical-chemical treatment, and biological treatment by double SBR. The public toilet blocks and prison will provide faecal sludge, which is mixed with imported faecal sludge from households, hotels and enclosed compounds, collected by trucks. Extensive R&D efforts and field tests Based on extensive R&D efforts and field tests between 2009-2010, the Horstermeer STP 1-STEP® filter was constructed in 2011 and commissioned in August 2012. This 1-STEP® filter is the result of codevelopment by various companies involved, financially supported by STOWA and the Water Framework Directive Innovation Program. After it was put into operation on January 1st 2013, it has been tested extensively under various load conditions, different water qualities, and across the full range of seasonal Netherlands’ weather events. The filter has been designed to treat up to 1.3 times the dry weather flow of the STP, whilst removing total nitrogen levels down to 2.2 mg/l and total phosphorous levels down to 0.18 mg/l; the lowest phosphorous level so far in practice. The successful implementation of the 1-STEP® filter at Horstermeer STP resulted in a 30-50 % saving in investment and operational costs when compared to conventional, successive processes. Since the launch of the Nijhuis Screw Press (NSP) in 2017, which was developed in close consultation with the experienced Fluiteco and Nijhuis engineers, customers from several industries are already benefiting from the screw press, such as As Do Mar, one of the leading tuna fish processing companies with operations in Italy and Portugal. Sludge dewatering treatment with the NSP effectively generates dewatered cake with high dry solids content and a good quality of centrate water, resulting in significant sludge volume reduction. Hence, costs associated with sludge disposal will be minimized.
Cost-effective Sludge Dewatering Solution The screw press unit consists of pre-assembled components which enable the dewatering system to be flexible and easy to install, either as part of a total wastewater treatment solution project or as a stand-alone system in a new or existing wastewater treatment plant. Electrodialysis Reversal (NMS-EDR): The Nijhuis EDR unit removes all kinds of dissolved materials, such as salt. The unit can be adjusted to remove the salt with electricity, using a reduced amount of chemicals from production. Ultra Filtration (NMS-UF): The unit is a superior barrier for viruses and bacteria removal and a solid pre-treatment for reverse osmosis. The small pore size ensures reduced membrane fouling.
