Dear clients and business partners, Last year’s very warm summer and the recent floods in many parts of the world, have clearly shown the vulnerability of our eco-system and the immediate effect of climate change. At the same time, August 1st 2018 was marked as ‘earth overshoot day’. This marked the first time that global resource consumption outpaced the earth’s yearly renewal capacity. The unlimited consumption and disposal of increasingly scarce resources such as water, nutrients, organic matter and energy, are all the unfortunate consequences of today’s non-circular standards and practices. Waste and (waste)water treatment should no longer be focused only on safe disposal, but also on resource recovery. For example, the circular economy of reusing treated animal manure should reduce the use of non-organic fertilizers. In the near future, circularity may be one of the only answers to the ever increasing needs of our growing population, whilst trying to limit the current pace of climate change.

Nijhuis partnership with the sun As a global and leading solution provider for sustainable water use and resource recovery, we also have to improve our own environmental footprint. The recent installation of 1450 solar panels on the roof of our headquarters in Doetinchem, the Netherlands, is generating almost 862 kWh of power. This output makes our headquarters building the largest Nijhuis renewable energy facility amongst all of our offices. The solar panels supply up to 70% of the energy requirements of our headquarters building, including offices, manufacturing, logistics and test facilities. Other inspiring examples are the improvement of our carbon footprint by reducing the material losses in our manufacturing process to less than 0.2%, as well as the continuous expansion of our rental fleet. This includes our active ‘buy back policy’ for used and secondhand equipment, pre-treatment units, and sludge handling equipment. We have also recently introduced a ‘trial and buy’ program for innovative and new products, which all contribute to a more sustainable world. What we have seen as an overall trend around the globe, is that governments are intensifying pressure on the market to treat their wastewater in a much stricter way than before, ensuring that environmental compliance is adhered to. However, this comes with a challenge. Wastewater experts such as Nijhuis are needed to help oil and gas companies to develop an economical and sustainable solution to treat their wastewater, whilst the produced wastewater itself is becoming more difficult to treat. Fluctuations and production process changes require innovative designs to handle these issues. This specialist process design requires both a lot of experience, and experts inside the company to use their knowledge to generate the most economical and sustainable design.”
Current market opportunities towards sustainable water use In the complete oil and gas market spectrum and especially in the midstream tank terminal market, the attention is shifting from API solutions, to flocculation-flotation and biological treatment technologies to meet stricter wastewater discharge limits. In South Africa, Nijhuis has recently realized a flocculation-flotation solution for a tank terminal to guarantee discharge limits can be met. This flocculationflotation solution is installed in place of the previously installed API solution to treat the mix of slop water and runoff wastewater. Another successful project example who is following the trend from pre-treatment to biological treatment is the new WWTP of petrochemical company SIBUR. They officially opened their Nijhuis biological treatment at the end of 2018 at the production facility.
A wastewater design has to anticipate on significant fluctuations to ensure environmental compliance can be constantly achieved: Wastewater flows and wastewater pollution in the oil and gas market are subject to significant fluctuations. For example, in the biofuel market it is very common to work with batches. In one batch, the wastewater can contain a large quantity of animal fat. One batch later this can be changed into palm oil fat. Anticipating such fluctuations in the design of the WWTP will ensure environmental compliance can be constantly achieved, with a stable working WWTP by integrating several measurements, monitoring and controlling tools into the WWTP. By adding several intelligent sensor
solutions such as the Nijhuis i-DOSE and Nijhuis i-QUALITY into the wastewater process, operational excellence with real-time control and maximized system performance can be achieved. Resource Recovery: apply anaerobic digestion to generate energy: In the biofuel industry, anaerobic digestion can be applied. This is a resource recovery and circular solution which not only treats and cleans water, but also generates energy and heat which can be used within the production facility. Petrochemical project in the spotlight
Biological treatment facilities launched at SIBUR’s Perm site In November 2018, SIBUR officially opened their new Nijhuis BIOCTOR biological treatment facility. The biological facilities were upgraded to ensure high-quality wastewater treatment at volumes exceeding 3 millon cubic meters per year and compliance with Perm’s local regulations, which are more stringent in every aspect than applicable federal laws. By reducing the load entering the city’s treatment plants, the new facilities will help increase the readily available municipal capacities and create more development opportunities for other local industrial operations and civil engineering. A total of RUB 663 m was invested in the project, which was supported by the Perm Administration and implemented in cooperation with NOVOGOR-Prikamye – the company responsible for all water supply and wastewater management activities in the city. The facilities at SIBUR’s Perm site were constructed in line with global best practices. In 2015, the first stage of the project was launched featuring mechanical and chemical treatment technologies. The second stage of the treatment process involves 24 tonnes of living organisms (20 species) to ensure a 12 times reduction in organic matter volumes within the wastewater.

Cornish Orchards Cider protects cherished environment with a new Nijhuis wastewater treatment plant Cornish Orchards create award winning premium ciders located deep in the Cornish countryside. As a company with proud environmental standards they were keen to commission a treatment plant based upon smart and sustainable principles, all realised on small footprint. Nijhuis Industries responded to this challenge by designing a Sequential Batch Reactor (BIOCTOR-SBR) system, as part of a turnkey design and build solution. The new wastewater treatment process is a robust and reliable solution, protecting the cherished environment. The client has received operational training and is proud to be operating a fully functioning Nijhuis effluent treatment plant with the confidence that a robust and reliable process is protecting the cherished environment. The Nijhuis solution: from cost to sustainable water use The solution comprises of the pumping of effluent from an existing wet well to an NRF 38/050 rotating screen with scraper to remove bottle caps, labels and other large obstructions. This feeds into a NDF 200 cloth screen incorporating polymer dosing to remove high levels of total suspended solids such as pumice from apple pressing. The screened effluent is then introduced to a Nijhuis BIOCTOR-SBR tank via a selector tank. A solid biological treatment process: sequence batch reactor The Nijhuis BIOCTOR-SBR process is a single batch bio treater comprising a 465m2 tank with floating aerator and decanting arm. The biomass within the tank converts organic matter to water, carbon dioxide and new biomass with the aid of oxygen induced by the aerator. Oxygen levels are monitored
and controlled by an in-line probe. The excess sludge from the BIOCTOR-SBR tank is fed back to the cloth screen to thicken the sludge and thereafter to a sludge storage tank. Reduced visual impact of the plant The Nijhuis BIOCTOR-SBR tank and associated equipment, pumps and transfer tanks were designed to be accommodated within a cast in-situ reinforced concrete bunded area. This reduced the visual impact of the plant which is set within a 16th century farm. The difference in level between the lower bunded area and the upper slab allowed gravitational flow from the screens situated at the upper level. The whole process is controlled by the Nijhuis PLC electrical control panel housed in a bespoke control room, which also provides housing for chemical/polymer dosing and sampling facilities.
Smart adapted lagoons to provide buffering capacity Treated effluent is pumped 75m up to the client’s existing old treatment lagoons. These lagoons were adapted to provide buffering capacity of batched effluent by the inclusion of a hydro brake to limit flows to the maximum discharge consent specified by the Environment Agency. Flows from the hydro brake are fed via a 200m sewer to discharge into the local stream.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT - 1-STEP® filter Ultimate one step total effluent polishing filter for municipal wastewater
At present, removal of suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals and organic micro pollutants from treated effluent of wastewater treatment plants requires successive conventional processes to be implemented at the WWTP, leading to high investment and operational cost. The 1-STEP® filter, developed by Nijhuis Industries, Witteveen+Bos and Waternet, is an innovative compact fixed bed activated carbon filter operated at a relatively high rate downward flow combining four processes in one single additional treatment unit. Besides removal of suspended solids by filtration, it performs excellently on nitrogen removal by simultaneous biological denitrification (using a selective carbon source), chemical phosphate and heavy metals removal (by coagulation and flocculation with a low dose of metal salt) and, if required, removal of organic micro pollutants by adsorption to the activated carbon. The 1-STEP® filter is easy to implement and extend since it can be added to existing wastewater treatment plants or function as a pre-treatment unit in treated effluent recycling facilities. For example, the Implementation of the 1-STEP® filter at Horstermeer WWTP resulted in 30 - 50% saving in investment and operational costs compared to conventional successive processes.”

Dutch Water Board Aa & Maas starts innovative pharmaceutical residue removal research with Nijhuis Industries Water board ‘Aa & Maas’ is currently conducting pilot research, together with Nijhuis Industries, to investigate whether the removal rate of more than 80% of pharmaceutical residues from municipal wastewater is feasible. The research has a highly scientific nature, to validate which ‘fourth treatment stage’ technology is able to remove pharmaceutical residues and can be applied at a full-scale capacity. Currently, several municipal treatment plants in the Netherlands rely on pre-treatment, biological treatment and polishing steps for additional nutrient removal. The ‘fourth treatment stage’ has to ensure that more than 80% of the pharmaceutical residues and other micro pollutants will be removed, improving the ecological environment. Since the beginning of September 2018, a modular and containerized Nijhuis Industries Ozone solution has been treating a side-stream of the municipal water after their final treatment step. Installed in a 20” container, the treatment unit contains all the required measurement equipment to determine the optimal ozone concentration. The dosing of the ozone is based on the actual pollution load in order to remove the pharmaceutical residues, and avoids overdosing. The solution is consisting of three reaction tanks to dose the ozone, an oxygen generator, a highly efficient Nijhuis Ozone Generator, and as a final treatment step a biological system, based on Nijhuis BIOCTOR-MBBR technology, for the removal of the decomposed pharmaceutical residues. Project background Since the beginning of the century, Dutch water boards started to focus more and more on the environmental effects of micropollutants in surface water from the effluent of municipal treatment plants. In the past couple of years, attention has shifted to the effects of pharmaceutical residues in the effluent of municipal treatment plants. After years of study, pilot projects are now being completed. The application of the best ‘fourth stage’ technology is strongly depending on for example the efficiency in relation to the ecological environment, local conditions, and water quality aspects. According to the micro-contaminants knowledge centre NRW (based in Germany), and extensive laboratory testing at the water board Aa & Maas, ozone technology has proved itself to be one of the three successful treatment technologies to remove more than 80% of pharmaceutical residues.

Singaporeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fourth Desalination Plant The construction of Singaporeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fourth Desalination Plant began on 29th June 2017, with construction expected to be completed in 2020. The first of its kind in Singapore, the Marina East Desalination Plant (MEDP) will be a large-scale, dual-mode plant, which will treat both freshwater from Marina Reservoir, or seawater, depending on wet or dry weather conditions. When completed, the plant will be able to produce up to 137,000m3 of fresh drinking water on a daily basis.

In June 2018, the client paid a scheduled visit to the Nijhuis Industries Doetinchem manufacturing facility to inspect all major equipment, and to carry out a Factory Assurance Tests (FAT). Following the FAT, in mid-July, all equipment was shipped and received in Singapore. At the current time, the eight Nijhuis concrete High Rate Dissolved Air Flotation Modules are under civil construction, at approximately 60% of completion.

Nijhuis i-AERATION for the concrete High Rate i-DAF The Nijhuis i-DAF system is based on the innovative i-AERATION system which forms fine air bubbles for the separation of particles ensured by to the patented non-clogging depressurization nozzles. Micro air bubbles are dosed in and before the inlet construction of the DAF unit. In the i-AERATION system, a part of the treated water is brought under a pressure of 5 bar, making air dissolves in water. By reducing the pressure down to 1 bar, small air bubbles of 20 to 60 micron are formed, which quickly stick to the impurities in the water and cause a high degree of clarification. Treating cryptosporidiosis with ozone at Dartington Hall Estate in England The Dartington Estate, in the South-West in England, has a Private Water Supply which supplies about 150 m3/d to domestic properties, shops and some industrial business premises. There is a requirement for the Estate to provide ‘wholesome’ potable water to its customers and the water quality needs to be compliant with the Private Water Supplies (Water Quality) Regulations 2016, which came into effect on 27 June 2016. Nijhuis Industries advised the Estate Management that it would be required to include an ozone treatment of the water supply to safeguard against any ingress of cryptosporidium. Since the beginning of 2019, the ozone installation is ready for transportation to the Dartington Hall Estate and will be installed and commissioned during the year.

The Private Water Treatment Works is supplied from two raw water borehole supplies which are derived from the River Dart, after being filtered through the watercourse bedrock. The raw water supply is potentially vulnerable to the presence of the cryptosporidium organism, as the river drains through an agricultural catchment area. Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. Both the parasite and the disease are commonly known as “Crypto.” There are many species of cryptosporidium that infect animals, some of which also infect humans.

A consortium of Dutch companies, including Nijhuis Industries
Cleaning the Indian Ganges and Hindon River #FromWasteToWealth
“We need to value water worldwide, not only as an economic asset, but also for its social, cultural, environmental, and of course, its religious value. All of which are very relevant when working on the holy Ganga river”, said Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte at the opening of the Indo-Dutch Ganga Forum in Delhi, India in May 2018. He praised the Namami Ganga initiative by an integrated ‘waste to value’ plant, which aims to clean the 2500 km-long Ganges river. The programme to prevent future pollution and to restore the river quality has a budget of 3.1 billion US dollars. In 2014, the Indian government launched an integrated Ganga conservation mission called ‘Namami Gange’, to prevent pollution of the Ganges River and to revive the river.
The consortium will firstly develop a successful solution for the Hindon River, which flows between the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.
The pollution of the Indian rivers, and in particular the holy Ganges and the surrounding region, is a serious problem. In 2015 and 2017, Prime Minister Rutte and Prime Minister Modi made agreements to work together to find solutions to clean the river.
With the help of the Dutch government, the 2030 Water Resources Group, and the National Hindon Initiative, the Indo-Dutch Ganga Forum event led to the signing of an extensive partnership declaration between the Dutch government and the government of Uttar Pradesh. In the coming months, feasibility studies will be conducted with local stakeholders, Nijhuis Industries, GC International, to develop an economical, sustainable and feasible ‘Waste to Wealth’ business case.
The ‘Waste to Wealth’ program was initiated and developed by GC International, in close collaboration with Nijhuis Industries and several other partners. The implementation is supported by Netherlands International Works.
The idea behind the concept is to use all kinds of market mechanisms, to be able to treat and clean as much of waste and water as possible. Landfill, municipal solid waste, industry waste and sludge will all be collectively treated by a ‘waste to value’ plant. Resources will be recovered from the waste, and the sale of these resources will contribute to the investment payback period. During the Indo-Dutch Ganga Forum at the end of May, Therus Gieling (owner of GC International) and Menno Holterman (CEO of Nijhuis Industries), presented the concept to solve the biggest challenges.

Green Energy Ghana Project The waste to value project in Ghana, also called the Special Treat Project, is making progress. The project is an integrated, three-step wastewater value chain, developed by several partners, including Nijhuis Industries. The combined system will improve the living conditions of 300,000 people in the Greater Accra region, through improved and sustainable wastewater management. Approximately 50% of the estimated annual faecal sludge generation in these MAs will be treated. The project will install five 30-seater sanitation blocks (plus another 4 after the project duration) in three Municipalities, four 10-seater sanitation blocks at Nsawam Medium Secure Prison, one wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and one wastewater transfer
station at each of the project locations. At the WWTP, production facilities for biogas, fertilizer and compost will also be established. The treated water will be reused for agricultural applications, and the sludges will be used for biogas production in locally built digesters. The digested sludge will be composted and sold as fertilizer. The treated water will be applied for agricultural and fish farming. The three-step integrated wastewater value chain consists of a filtration step, hygienisation and two digesters. The site will be completed with a CHP unit, which produce around 350kWh. The public toilet blocks and prison will provide faecal sludge, which is mixed with imported faecal sludge from households, hotels and enclosed compounds, collected by trucks.

Personal story of Therus Gieling, owner of GC International The start of the ‘Green Energy Ghana Project’
We came up with the idea to send him to Ghana, and to discover in eight weeks how people live in the city of Accra. After a week, he still couldn’t find a toilet in his temporary residence. When he came back, I asked him what he had learned and which profession he would like to choose: “I now understand what social security means, and I would like to become a doctor, after all I have seen and discovered in Accra”, he told me. I asked my friendly contact what he would like as compensation for the experience my son had received. He asked me to help him with a project in Ghana with RVO and the Dutch embassy, to find a solution for the open sewage systems, to build toilets, and to develop a bankable project. I followed his request, free of charge, until RVO granted their permission for the project. Now and years later, I’m very glad and proud we are making progress, and currently constructing the waste-to-value installation together with Nijhuis Industries. I have also become a shareholder of the waste-to-value plant to secure also a proper operation in the future. A nature-driven and smart extended WWTP design Bulgarian pharmaceutical company Biovet chooses Nijhuis! Biovet, a manufacturer and marketer for farm animal productivity and health, has chosen Nijhuis Industries to completely redesign their WWTP system. Due to the fast growth of the company, a new production facility is currently under construction and will generate increased volumes of wastewater, which require treatment. However, the existing WWTP, which was built in the 1980s, cannot process these increased volumes of wastewater. This forced Biovet to search for a wastewater treatment supplier. Due to the fast response and the smart design, Nijhuis has been chosen to construct and realize the installation. A nature-driven design Located deep into a picturesque valley in the Rhodopi Mountains, the aim of the wastewater treatment plant design was to completely surround the system with the natural wooded scenery, and to use gravity as far as possible within the design. The wastewater will be pumped from the factory level in the valley floor, up to near the top of a hill. With a height increase of 50 meters, the WWTP will be completely surrounded by the woods. After the wastewater is pre-treated, a biological treatment system will use the power of nature’s gravity as a ‘cascade system’ and will automatically flow 50 meters down to the point where the water was originally pumped. A new DAF system will be used as final polishing step. The factory is located in the town of Peshtera, Bulgaria, 120 km southeast of the country’s capital, Sofia.
A smart extended WWTP design Since the 1980s, the wastewater treatment technology market has made enormous steps with introducing all new and optimized technologies to effectively treat wastewater. These optimised technologies have ensured that energy and chemical consumption have reduced considerably, and can being applied to smaller footprint systems with the help of a smart design. Due to these developments, Nijhuis can reuse the existing concrete WWTP infrastructure, and retrofit newly installed technology equipment. The current infrastructure can still exist, but is optimised to treat even more wastewater. The new treatment plant is expected to be operational in Q2 of 2019, to discharge treated water into the river.

Water reuse in the paper industry Compact water reuse solution Caesar Pac Carton & Paper Products Co is a premium provider of corrugated cartons in the Middle-East market. Their specialist range of products includes the production of brown and white corrugated boxes, five-colour printing, and die-cut boxes including micro-flutes, point of purchase, and display cartons. They are part of the Caesars Group of companies, a leading industry in Kuwait with diverse business interests. Such interests include manufacturing of corrugated cartons, operating a chain of restaurants and confectioneries, and trading in food stuffs, industrial equipment, spares, tools, IT solutions, travel, and tourism. Water reuse is the answer To enable the construction of their new factory, a compact wastewater treatment system was required to be built in the basement. Due to the large volumes of daily process water, and the fact that they cannot discharge into the sewer, Nijhuis designed a WWTP solution which reuses more than 90% of the treated wastewater. The wastewater from the factory is first filtered by a rotary drum screen to remove the large particles. It is then equalized in a balance tank of approx. 800 m3. From this tank, the wastewater is pumped to the flocculation/ flotation system. A proportion of this flow will be further treated with micro filters, to be reused within the process. The remaining volume of wastewater (approx. 2100 m3/day) will be further treated. The remaining volume of wastewater (approx. 2100 m3/day) will be further treated. A compact solution within the limited available space To provide a solution within the limited available space, Nijhuis has chosen a biological treatment solution with the lowest possible footprint, a compact 3 stage MBBR system. This treatment solution is designed to fit into the available space of the basement. The pre-treated and conditioned water is then directed to the Ultra Filtration system, which is implemented with special low fouling membranes to prevent frequent cleaning and to ensure optimal operational conditions. The final step of treatment is electrodialysis reversal (EDR). This treatment step will allow the solution to achieve the high recovery rate of more than 90% of treated wastewater. Electrodialysis is an electric field gradient driven process, enabling the separation of salt ions from the feed solution. This is undertaken by moving ions through selectively permeable membranes, thereby forming two different flows â&#x20AC;&#x201C; clean water, and a salty concentrate.

Polish industrial leader will meet game-changing sustainability goals by reusing their wastewater Nijhuis Industries has won the order to build one of the largest turn-key Water Reuse Plants in Poland, to turn industrial wastewater into clean, reusable water. The reuse installation is a real breakthrough within the meat industry, and will meet game-changing sustainability goals. 8000 m3 wastewater per day will not be discharged into the river, but reused as a valuable resource for inhouse purposes in the production facility. Water reuse has become a mandatory solution to avoid water scarcity The investment demonstrates a worldwide trend, that wastewater reuse is not an option anymore, but has become a mandatory solution to avoid water scarcity, to accelerate business and to reduce environmental footprint. This wastewater plant will be a true ‘Resource Recovery Plant’, turning wastewater into profit. Large polishing and reuse plant The plant will be one of the largest industrial water reuse solutions in the world. The installation will be implemented in two stages, each of 4000 m3 per day Since 2012, Nijhuis implemented several treatment stages to meet more stringent effluent river discharge limits. These solutions have included pre-treatment and aerobic treatment for the wastewater, and anaerobic and dewatering solutions to treat the produced sludge and recover energy. The new polishing and reuse systems consists of a sand filter, ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis system. Filtration systems will also be installed within the production process, to reduce the pollution load being received at the current wastewater treatment plant. Coarse pollution particles, such as feathers, will be easily filtered using Nijhuis NTF Screens, from the wastewater, and will ensure a more efficient WWTP process.
The most economical and best business case: reuse wastewater! The increasing risk of insufficient groundwater in the near future has prompted our client to invest in this innovative water reuse system. The groundwater is used in process water and cleaning water across all factory production lines. With the company business continuing to expand, additional production lines will be installed. The additional production capacity will also require process and cleaning water, increasing the demand placed upon dwindling well water supplies and raise cost. This was one of the main drivers for this client to choose the most economical and best business case to reuse wastewater, developed by Nijhuis Industries. The current planning of the project is to start-up stage 1 in 2019.

New wastewater treatment plant for Vion in Germany
Vion owns several production locations in the Netherlands and Germany, and sales support offices in thirteen countries worldwide. With three divisions; Pork, Beef and Food Service, they provide fresh pork and beef, and by-products for retail, foodservice and the meat processing industry. At their production location in Germany, they are slaughtering more than 300 pigs per hour, and more than 50 cattle per hour, during two shifts. The original pre-treatment was delivered in 1995, and could not achieve the stricter effluent quality imposed by the WABA (waste water authority). The new discharge consent required a COD of 8.550 mg/l, FOG of 300 mg/l and solids of 100 mg/l.
New dissolved air flotation including i-DOSE In December 2017, Nijhuis was requested to submit an offer for a new pre-treatment plant. Due to the combination of an interesting business case with a strong focus on a low CAPEX and the new pre-treatment equipment will be integrated into the original wastewater plant, Vion has chosen Nijhuis.
Saving on manpower with intelligent dosing control At the old plant, it was necessary to manually adjust the chemical dosing two times a day. With the innovative Nijhuis i-DOSE system, the client will save both time and chemicals, as well as being able to analyse the real-time COD values on the incoming effluent. For this project, the scope of supply included a DAF unit (GDF 20) with chemical treatment, equalisation tank, chemical tanks, pipe works, steel works and cabling. The startup of the system is currently in progress.

Nijhuis Industries starts a partnership with the sun As a global and leading solution provider for sustainable water use and resource recovery, we also have to improve our own environmental footprint. The recent installation of 1450 solar panels on the roof of our headquarters in Doetinchem, the Netherlands, is generating almost 862 kWh of power. This output makes the headquarters building the largest Nijhuis renewable energy facility amongst all of our offices. The solar panels supply up to 70% of the energy requirements of the headquarters building, including offices, manufacturing, logistics and test facilities.
