SEXISM: CAPTURED! advanced planning visit
10 - 11 July Misaktsiaeli, Georgia
PROJECT 2016 has shown that sexism is an utter problem of the society, our com munities are not so sensitive regarding this topic - one can still achieve public approval, even if using sexist slurs and harassment. No matter what is the gender equality index in our countries, sexism is still some thing that we need to address in our social circles. The Internet has been beneficial for us, but it also has brought the dark side - trolls, hate speech, sexist and misogynist slurs. We think our communities need to reaffirm gender equality and respect for each other as a value. Since the topic of sexism and gender can be hard to understand, there’s a need to bring this discourse into public focus. Young people are especially affected by gender norms, standards, and social expectations, there is much to reflect, discuss and express about those topics. Due to the strong ties to culture, gender is more interesting and important to be discussed through different cultural perspectives. We believe we - the young people have a capacity to transform the reali ty through our actions and for this, there’s a need to create a space where we can express ourselves together creatively and deliver messag es to others. We aim to raise awareness about sexist speech in our communities, counter it and change the attitudes towards gender. Our vision is to create a youth exchange which gives space to discuss, exchange ideas and learn more about gender, sexism and reflect on our role to achieve equality. We focus on empowering each other to make this social change through making videos using as simple equipment as a smartphone and spreading the messages in the Internet sphere and television.
OBJECTIVES: - To create a comfortable atmosphere without barriers to express one self; - To create a space to discuss gender roles, social expectations, discrimi nation, sexism, and harassment; - To discuss what is the position of sexism in our public discourse and how it affects our circles and us; - To reflect on our attitudes towards different gender expressions; - To act against hate speech and sexist speech, and become equality ambassadors; - To reflect on the cultural dimensions of gender and enhance intercul tural dialogue; - To gain video-making skills as a way to express ourselves creatively; - To create a multiplying effect by setting up an internet channel for these videos and animations; - To create a hashtag #genderXXI to see what youth around the globe think about different gender expectations and create a booklet about it; - To affirm equality as a value of modern society.
