Dr. Sunil Mahajan Dr. Pankaj Mutneja Dr. Nikhil Girdhar Dr. Jyoti Bajaj Dear Readers Health is the best resource to own. If you are healthy you can win the world but if you are unhealthy nothing seems good to you not even water. And if we look at a macroscopic level, the best resource for a country is people and for people the best resource is health. So it'is the citizens’ health that is the biggest resource for a country. But what our citizens faced in the past month depicts the sad state of infrastructure when it comes to facing epidemics(in this case dengue). Life is precious we all understand and accept. But the authorities) are either ignorant or incapable. The shameful part is that the capital of world’s imminent leader is in shattered state just because of mosquito. Then how can that country let die a 6 year old just because of doctors refusal fro 5 government hospitals. And what followed makes the condition even worse. The child’s parent committed suicide as they could not save their child. The last month has seen a plethora of patients visiting and getting admitted in panic too. Whosoever has fever & is capable wants to get himself admitted just out of panic. We citizens too should understand the basics of this disease so that the needy is not deprived of treatment. The details of the disease have been discussed as FAQ’s in the current edition. Kindly read and spread the message around for a healthy resourceful India. Wishing you a healthy & robust life!!!!!!

Mortality from dengue can be reduced to almost zero by implementing timely, appropriate clinical management, which involves early clinical and laboratory diagnosis, intravenous rehydration, staff training and hospital reorganization. Can dengue fever be treated at home? Most patients with dengue fever can be treated at home. They should take rest, drink plenty of fluids that are available at home and eat nutritious diet. Whenever available, Oral Rehydration Salt/ORS (commonly used in treating diarrhoea) is preferable. Sufficient fluid intake is very important. It is important to look for danger signs and contact the doctor as soon as any one or more of these are found. What is the treatment? Is it curable? Like most viral diseases there is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Antibiotics do not help. Paracetamol is
the drug of choice to bring down fever and joint pain. Other medicines such as Aspirin and ibuprofen (Brufen) should be avoided since they can increase the risk of bleeding. Doctors should be very careful when prescribing medicines. Any medicine that decreases platelets should be avoided. Can people die from dengue fever? People who suffer from dengue fever have no risk of death but some of them develop Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever or Dengue Shock Syndrome. In some of these cases death can occur. With proper treatment, the patients with Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Shock Syndrome can recover fully. Treatment provided in time can save most lives.

Brush?
In the so called educated society, the dawn breaks with the toothbrush and a topping of paste over it and ends the same way. In many lives the night brushing is never an event all their generations i.e. neither parents/grandparents nor the children brush at night. Is it the ignorance or the laziness? That's one side of the coin. But the other side is also not that bright i.e. those who brush twice a day should not be cloud nine with pride because they too are not doing 100% justice to the hygiene of the oral cavity. Frown on the forehead of twice brushers (those who brush twice daily) can be answered in the following section. Just a question will answer most of your frowns? Why do we need to brush early morning when we have neither eaten nor drunk anything after our brushing at night? Most of you will answer that freshness is a reason to brush early morning. That means the morning brushing does not resolve your hygiene issues but your freshness issues. Yes that's the truth. The morning brushing is only a mouth freshening activity. The scientific and logical method that is taught to dentists is to brush thrice a day. But rarely does your dentist tell you

Logic for brushing thrice a day The brushing done after breakfast removes the food lodgement of the breakfast food( at 9 AM) which would have been delayed till late night i.e. before bed (10 PM) if left without brushing. That means your lunch i.e.1AM will be only food left to be cleaned at night. If you do not brush after breakfast then brushing at night i.e. 10 PM will remove the food debris deposited in the mouth from 9AM. It means more than 12 hours have elapsed between food lodgements and brushing.

Nose : a better sense than eye It has been believed for long that human nose can distinguish 10,000 different smells, but new research shows our nose to be far more useful. Cocktails of ten, 20 or 30 molecules are mixed from 128 different scents, like citrus & grass. Participants got three vials: two containing the same cocktail and the third with a mystery odour, and then asked to identify latter. The instances of correct identification were exptrapolated to account for all possible combinations to arrive at a conservative figure of 1 trillion scents our noses can detect. This exceeds the number of colours our eyes can see( 10 million), though we fall short of the average dog, which can smell two to three ties better than us.

The study has found that a little dark chocolate can help you keep heart diseases at bay. Well chocolate has always been considered as a taste heaven but it was always considered bad for oral health. Though in recent times it was considered that cocoa has nutritional benefits too. This latest research revealed that participants eating 70 grams of dark chocolate per day over a month experienced improvements in vascular function. Arteries were more flexible and fewer white blood cells stuck to blood vessel wallsboth of which reduce the risk for atherosclerosis (artery hardening) - the biggest cause of heart attacks.
Why taste changes with age? Several factors take a shift with age I our body. taste is no different. Children have an internal preference for sweet food ad drinks, disliking strong and particularly bitter tastes. As they grow older these people start enjoying bitter flavors such as coffee. Once we hit middle age, the umber of taste buds o our tongue gradually diminishes and our sense of smell declines, making food taste bland. Experience & culture also affect our perception, and a bad experience with certain food or drink ca also change out tastes. 15

Are we left or right brained? The brain and spinal cord, or central nervous system, control how we think, feel, learn, move and other body functions.Layers of tissue called the meninges surround and protect the brain. Discover the truth behind the way we think It's true that the different sides of the brain perform different tasks, but do these anatomical asymmetries really define our personalities? Some psychologists argue that creative, artistic individuals have a more developed right hemisphere, while analytical, logical people rely more heavily on the left side of the brain, but so far, the evidence for this two-sided split has been lacking. Ina study they divided the brain up into 7,000 regions and analysed the fMRI scans of over 1000 people, in order to determine whether the networks on one side of the brain were stronger than the networks on the other. Despite the popularity of the left versus right brain myth, the team found no difference in the strength of the networks in each hemisphere, or in the amount we use either side of our brains. Instead, they showed that the brain is more like a network of computers. Local nerves can communicate more efficiently than distant ones, so instead
of sending every signal across from one hemisphere to the other, neurones that need to be in constant communication tend to develop into organised local hubs, each responsible for a different set of functions.

Those who suffer from migraines know they are a constant concern as they are liable to strike any time. Essentially, a migraine is an intense pain at the front or one side of the head. This usually takes the form of a heavy throbbing sensation and can last as little as an hour or two and upto a few days. Other symptoms of a migraine include sensitivity to light, sound and smell, so isolation in a dark and quiet room often brings relief. Nausea & vomiting is also often reported, with pain sometimes subsiding after the sufferer has been sick. It is thought that migraines occur when levels of serotonin in brain drop rapidly. This causes blood vessels in the cortex to narrow, which is caused by the brain spasming. The blood vessels widen again in response, causing the intense headache Emotional upheaval is often cited as a cause for the drop in serotonin in the brain, as is diet in which blood sugar levels rise and fall dramatically.

Laser Eye Surgery What else can laser eye surgery do? Laser eye surgery is not limited to curing long and shortsightedness. Modern technology is also able to cure astigmatism, which happens when a person's cornea is an irregular shape, which means light doesn't enter the retina cleanly and is bounced about, resulting in blurred vision. The laser is able to reshape the cornea. The cornea in a shortsighted eye is bent too much, so when light enters, the image gets formed too early and becomes blurry when things are far away. The opposite applies to longsightedness, as the cornea isn't bent enough and the image hasn't been formed by the time it hits the retina.
Inside laser eye surgery
Laser eye surgery has taken giant leaps forward in the last two decades
EYE INSIDE OUT
Surgeon cuts a flap in front of the cornea with either a knife or laser to allow access to the cornea.
Lenses Glasses or contact lenses can correct vision by bending the light rays as they enter your eye. This helps the rays to focus on the retina to so we can see.
How surgeons are able restore your sight with lasers ? Lasers have been used to help people with short and longsightedness for a couple of decades, but the practice of using incisions in a person's eye to improve their vision has been around for over l00 years. It all started in 1898 when eye
Reshaping As the cornea is curved, they will slice a bit off the front so the light isn't refracted so much and can reach the retina at the correct point. 26
Health Now October 2015
An eye for Number surgeons would make small cuts in the front surface of the eye (cornea), to flatten it in the middle and let light reach the retina more easily. As this technique was a bit hit-and-miss, they came up with a new technique that involved using a thin blade to slice open the cornea and create a flap. The eye surgeon would then slice a bit of tissue from the cornea to flatten it as before and then fold the flap back down. The technology took a huge leap forward when they brought lasers into the equation. These super-precise beams were able to burn away part of the cornea without creating a flap, but this did lead to every long and uncomfortable recovery. Then, in 1999, LASIK entered the arena. This procedure, combining two previous methods, required a flap to be made and then could get to work with shaping the stroma layer of the cornea. This allowed for more precision than ever before and vastly reduced the discomfort from the previous method. The actual surgery takes a surprisingly short amount of time. From the point at which the numbing drops get popped in, the creation of a flap, reshaping and replacing it should take between 15 and 30 minutes, with full vision returning within 24 hours.
We ‘ve all heard about 20/20 vision, but what exactly does that mean? Eye specialists have worked out how tall letters have to be for a normal eye to see them at 20 feet(6.1 metres). Someone with 20/20 vision or 6/6 vision can see letters of that height from 20 feet, meaning their vision is just as expected. Someone with 20/40 or 6/12 can see something at 20 feet that a person with normal vision can see at 40 feet(12.2metres). So the bigger the second number the worse the vision.
Scale of Sight
20/2 Vision of Falcon, Eight times better than human eye
20/20 Normal Vision, minimum requirement for a fighter pilot
20/40 Worst your eyes can be & still be allowed to drive
20/80 Still Just about able to read a newspaper headlines
20/200 Legally blind- however you can still see stop signal

Pregnancy and Oral Health Pregnancy and Gum Disease Pregnancy is a time to take extra special care of your teeth and gums. The mother's oral health can affect the general and dental health of the unborn child. Any infection during pregnancy is a cause for concern. Gingivitis may occur more frequently during pregnancy due to the rise in the body's hormone level. These increased hormones exaggerate the way gum tissues react to the irritants in plaque. Gum disease often occurs in women whose oral hygiene habits were not good during pregnancy. Tooth decay can occur if a woman increases her snacking on sugar-rich food and does not maintain good oral hygiene. During the third trimester, women tend to eat smaller amounts more frequently during the day; therefore, it is important to eat healthy foods and snacks and brush with fluoride toothpaste. Premature Delivery Research has linked periodontal disease in pregnant women to an increased risk of premature delivery. Pregnant women with gum disease may be six times more likely to have a baby that is born too early and too small. Researchers believe that bacteria from diseased gums enter the blood-stream and may then affect the levels of prostaglandin (PGE2), a hormone that is naturally present in a woman's body. Usually in the ninth month of pregnancy, the level of PGE2 rises significantly and triggers the start of labor. In women with serious gum disease, the level of PGE2 may rise too soon and trigger early labor. Regular dentist visits are especially important during pregnancy; however, it is best to have elective work done before becoming pregnant. Generally, all aspects of a routine dental hygiene visit are safe for pregnant women, unless the physician advises otherwise. The second trimester is considered the best time to receive routine dental care. It is important that the pregnant woman informs the dentist of her pregnancy at the time of the visit. ABS
for two wheelers
A very welcoming initiative that will transform the safety in Indian Bike industry forever. It will soon be mandatory for all two-wheelers with more than 125cc engine, covering majority of bikes and scooters, to install anti-lock braking system (ABS) to reduce road crashes. In what is an unprecedented move, the Government of India has issued a mandate that states that all twowheelers sold in India must have Combined Braking System (CBS) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) as standard. The notification that has been sent to manufacturers also says that new two-wheelers need to have CBS and ABS by April 2017. For existing models, the time frame is extended upto April 2018. Two-wheelers with engines below 125cc should have CBS as standard while the one’s above should have ABS. At present, Honda and Hero Motocorp sell scooters with CBS and IBS respectively while Honda also sells the Unicorn CB160, Trigger and CB Shine with CBS. The list of ABS equipped motorcycles include the TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS,KTM Duke 390, RC390, Bajaj Pulsar RS200 (front only) and a host of CKDs and CBUs. It was about time that the Government took steps to arrest the rising number of road accident related fatalities and injuries in the country. With our unpredictable road conditions and lack of general road etiquette, safety nets such as CBS and ABS could help prevent accidents. A slight hike in the prices of twowheelers is inevitable but think about this, won’t the ABS save you and your motorcycle when you grab the front brake lever on a wet, slippery surface?

5 Parenting Tips
Balancing love & discipline sums up parenting. But parenting is not as easy as has been summed up in the previous line. Though with proper knowledge one can be trained and life becomes much easier as parents. Parenting is a skill which is enriched with daily experiences. All parents want their child to be the best. Good parenting means a great parent-child relationship. Here are some parenting tips which will help in forging a great bond with your children.
to help your children grow into confident and welladjusted individuals. Parenting is not easy as many of you parents would have realized by now. These are some tips which will help to make the journey smoother and easier. These tips are not addressing a specific problem, they are just certain guidelines. These are general parenting tips which you can apply in your everyday life while bringing up the kids. Let us have a quick look at top 5 simple yet effective parenting tips.
Every parent would love to know how they can be better parents to their precious children. Good parenting skills 1. Give Unconditional Love will help to develop a great relationship between you and your children. Good parenting is important in order Firstly you must remember that your children are not 32
going to remain young always. Your child would not remain a baby or a pre-schooler forever. Time flies so fast, that they will grow up soon. Hence, you should make the most of your child’s growing years. The childhood of your child is the time when you can spend maximum amount of time with your child and grow close to her. Once, they grow into teenagers and adults, they get so busy with their own lives. You should try to have as many as happy memories as possible of each age of your child from toddler to teenager. Let them know how much you love and that you will always love them.
4. Have Family-Time!
Health Now October 2015
Many fathers come home late at night, by which time their children are already in bed. Make it a point to have at least one meal together as a family. Basically, you should try and make it a point to do something together as a family. Set aside fifteen minutes every evening, when the entire family will together clean the house! Or, you can also play some board games five days a week together like ‘Monopoly’. This will help all of you to bond together as a family and will also help siblings become closer. 5. Try to Make Your Children Self-Reliant
2. Put Yourself in Their Shoes If any time, you feel irritated by your child’s demands or feel that your child is being difficult, put your self in their shoes for a moment. Try to think about the time when you were a child and felt the same way. If your child wants to stay in her friend’s house and you do not want to allow her, think about it from your child’s point of view. Remember the time when you were also ten years old like her and you and your entire gang had planned to stay together in someone’s house. Remember how you had plans to play games with each other and have a lot of fun. How excited you had felt about the whole idea and how bad you would have felt if you had missed it! Those times with friends will not come back and you as a parent today will cherish those childhood memories forever. In the same way, see the situation from your ten year old’s perspective. 3. Develop Healthy Eating Habits From a Young Age Make it a point to feed your child healthy food right from a young age. Give them fruits instead of chips and pizza. If your children eat healthy foods right from a young age, then it is likely that the habit will continue till adulthood. Food habits developed at a young age often stay on till later in life. If children get used to eating nutritious and healthy food right from a young age, they are more likely to eat well as adults too.
33
Try to make your child independent and self-reliant. Do not do everything for your child as this will make them more and more dependent on you. Children should be given an opportunity to do simple tasks which can be done by them, without the parent doing it for them. Some parents do everything for their children which can cause problems later on in life. When children do things by themselves, they become self-reliant which in turn increases selfesteem. Also, avoid doing your child’s homework. Some parents do their child’s homework which is not right. You can guide your child and help them when they are doing homework, but do not do it for them. Making your child do a little cleaning of the house, folding of clothes, and washing dishes, etc will help them to learn basic life skills which everybody needs to know. These are some important parenting tips which can help parents during the journey of parenthood. At the end of the day, remember to be good role models for your child as parents are the biggest role models for children. Memories of parent-child relationship are special to every parent and child and these hold a special place in every parent and child’s heart!

Post-2015 Development Agenda focuses on solving many problems. Mahatma Gandhi had spoken about caring for a world that we will not see. Today we are here to decide on the new direction for humanity. If we want peace and development for the world, poverty needs to be tackled. Education and skill development is our priority. We want to empower the poor. We worked on financial inclusion in mission mode. Its either “public sector” or “private sector” that is discussed. We came up with “personal sector”. Women empowerment is an essential part of our plan. Individual enterprises constitute the “personal sector”. World talks of public and private sector. We are looking at the personal sector, which means individual enterprise and innovation. We are working on financial inclusion in a very big way. Since we attained freedom, we have focussed on ending poverty. Education and skill development are priorities for us. We are working towards making agriculture more productive and helping farmers suffering from natural adversities. We are working on bringing changes to our nation, to make our cities smart. Our way to development needs to be sustainable. I represent a culture where the earth is considered our mother. We see the entire world as one family. The principle of common but differentiated responsibilities is the bedrock of our enterprise for a sustainable world. A global education program needs to be started so that future generations learn to form a relationship with Nature. I hope that technology facilitation, technology innovation will contribute a lot to the development of the world. Our international relations need to keep development of the mankind at the centre. We must not become selfish when it comes to dealing with the problem of climate change. The world is connected and dependant on each other. Our international partnerships need to be centred on progress of humanity. We need to create a world where everyone feels safe, is respected and has opportunities to grow. We must reform the United Nations including its Security Council so that it carries greater credibility & legitimacy. I want everyone to prosper and thats what I pray for; everyone’s happiness, and prosperity. 36

A technique that uses hands-on work in the evaluation and treatment of disease Osteopathy, more commonly referred to as osteopathic medicine is not a modality, but rather a system of healthcare. It considers the whole body and focuses on preventive care. The osteopathic concept is essentially that any observable alteration in the normal anatomy is a sign that disease is present and that correction of this abnormality would resolve or improve the disease's effects. Thus, osteopathy is first and foremost a philosophy. The manual approaches and techniques that are used in the application of this philosophy are extremely varied. There are really no "osteopathic techniques," but rather numerous manual approaches and techniques that were developed by osteopaths and are applied from an osteopathic perspective. Generally, the free normal flow and actions of nerves, arteries, veins, lymphatics, and cerebrospinal fluid are addressed in an osteopathic evaluation and treatment.
How can it benefit your health and wellbeing? Because osteopathy is a healthcare system rather than a modality, its uses and applications are varied. Generally, many patients initially seek osteopathic care for aches, pains, strains, sprains, headaches, and other common musculoskeletal problems. However, since there are numerous evaluation and manual treatment approaches, many health problems can be and have been successfully addressed with osteopathic manipulation. Studies have shown positive effects with the following conditions: Ÿ Arthritis Ÿ Asthma Ÿ Autism
A visit to a doctor of osteopathy (DO) can be much like a visit to a traditional MD, with some exceptions. Since DOs take a holistic approach to working with patients, a DO may ask the client about his or her physical condition and lifestyle. A hands-on physical examination is also conducted. One technique, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), involves the use of the DO's hands to diagnose injury and illness, giving special attention to the joints, bones, muscles, and nerves. 40

There are few, if any, absolute contraindications to osteopathic manipulation, however, it is important for both the osteopath and the client to use common sense. Osteopathic manipulative treatment itself has no potential side effects other than temporary soreness for a day or two after therapy. You should generally avoid vigorous types of manipulation (for example, thrust-type maneuvers or lymphatic pumps) if you have certain conditions, such as bone cancer, bone or joint infection, or severe osteoporosis, as it could cause trauma to the bone or internal organs. Otherwise, almost any person can potentially benefit from osteopathic evaluation and treatment. What does the research show? Issues of controls, blinded studies, and "sham" manipulation represent research challenges. Also, funding and obtaining large population studies have been ongoing issues since the beginning of the profession. Traditionally, research in osteopathic manipulation has been in small studies, but has often shown positive results and promise as an intervention for patients in both outpatient and inpatient scenarios. Additionally, children and the elderly seem to be significant populations that can benefit from osteopathic manipulative treatment.

Apni Zindagi Apne Andaaz
Sh. Pankaj Nain IPS, assumed the charge of Superintendent of Police, Karnal on 10th July 2015. He is a creative and thinking Police Officer. He organized a meeting at Panchayat Bhawan Karnal on 19th August 2015 with social workers, artists, poets, writers, journalists, and Principals of Schools and Colleges as well as the administrators to discuss and implement the idea of RAAHGIRI. About 300 persons from all walks of life attended this meeting. A core committee was formed from these respected and energetic persons. For a small city like Karnal, RAAHGIRI was a unique idea. You must have heard about Gandhigiri and Dadagiri, but RAAHGIRI is a novel idea, which means a space for pedestrians and to return to community life and to search for those relaxing moments of which we have deprived ourselves in today’s busy schedule. So, the core committee (RAAHGIRI team) under the leadership of the worthy SP, Sh. Pankaj Nain planned to organize RAAHGIRI in Karnal. For this purpose, the routes from Old Tehsil to Committee Chowk, Sabji Mandi and HDFC lane were selected. So far RAAHGIRI has been organized in 16 metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bhopal, Delhi, Chandigarh, Ludhiana & Gurgaon etc. The first RAAHGIRI was organized on 30th August 2015. More than 5000 people participated in the various events on the first day. It was full of activities including Carrom Board, Chess, Dancing, Singing, Yoga, Cycling, Skating, Gymnasium, Volleyball, Badminton, Boxing and Aerobics as well as the old street games like Snakes and Ladders, Skipping and Tug-of-War etc. Adequate arrangements were made for drinking water, parking and traffic management.
Exhaustive arrangements were made for the safety of citizens with a special focus on the security of women and children. To the utter admiration of everyone, the first event was a surprisingly grand success. Red Tshirts & caps were made available by the sponsors for the team of RAAHGIRI. Sh. Hanif Qureshi, IPS, Inspector General of Police, Karnal Range, Sh. Pankaj Nain IPS, Sh. Amrender Singh, OSD to Chief Minister, Haryana & Sh. Sher Singh, Superintendent of Prison, Karnal and a number of other dignitaries participated in various activities to encourage the citizens. The second RAAHGIRI was organized on 6th September 2015. In this event differently abled children participated and displayed their talents & skills. Perhaps these children got the first chance to perform on a public stage. The colour of the dress was changed from red to yellow. Street games like
Shtapu, Rope Jumping, Archery, Fencing, Painting, Art & Craft and folk songs of Rajasthan were performed. NCC Cadets & NSS volunteers from various schools and colleges presented a disciplined march past in accompaniment to the rhythm of the 42

band. A team of Sikh clergymen performed customary Gataka. The third RAAHGIRI was organized on 13th September 2015, which was attended by a still larger number of citizens. This event introduced a few new games such as marbles. The centre of attraction was the dance in tune to the patriotic songs sung by Mr. Radhey from Panipat (a physically challenged boy). “Smart Cops” team of Haryana Police showed public friendly face by participating in different games like Marbles, Badminton, Singing, Dancing and Bhangra. Two constables from the District Jail won the hearts of the public by presenting patriotic songs with in their melodious voices. In this RAAHGIRI, foreign tourists also heartily participated, enjoyed and highly admired this event.
When you toast bread, the toaster’s dry heat expels moisture, reducing its elasticity and resulting in a crispy, hard exterior. Temperatures of 12 to 160 degrees Celsius spark a number of chemical reactions which contribiute to altering bread’s texture, colour and taste. The flour in bread contains carbohydrates & proteins. The Malliard reaction causes the outer layer of carbohydrates and amino acids to combine, producing a caramelized brown colour and giving toast its signature flavour.
The team RAAHGIRI (consisting of NGOs, social workers and the Civil society) under the leadership of Sh. Pankaj Nain, assisted by a few worthy Police Officers has initiated a process of cultural transformation in Haryana. It will help in changing the perception of people regarding the enforcement agencies including the police personnel. Thus the convoy of RAAHGIRI is continuously moving forward, giving wings to feelings & dreams of people, forging emotional relation between the police and the public, reviving the memories of the childhood days, enhancing the happiness of life in this monotonous, busy life of hectic routine activities. Honorable Chief Minister of Haryana, Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar has launched RAAHGIRI website i.e. www.raahgirikarnal.com on 20th September 2015. 43

World No Car Day
On 22nd September 2015, as Gurgaon became the first city in the NCR to observe a car-free work day, the experiment elicited a mixed response from people, who welcomed the move but hoped for better alternative modes of travel. Gurgaon police chief Navdeep Singh Virk, said that the idea to have the event on World Car Free Day was to create more awareness about a global event. "Around the world, since the early 1990s cities are experimenting with carless travel. We thought that we could try that here, too, given that Gurgaon is always choc-a-bloc with traffic during peak hours," said Virk. In India, Hyderabad was the first city to try car-free Thursdays. The initiative, launched in June this year, in Cyberabad, has seen results in the last few months.

The Rapid Metro, to help bring in the initiative, increased the number of trips it usually makes. "Usually the metro runs every five minutes; today, we brought it down to once every three minutes," said a Rapid Metro spokesperson, adding that they saw a sharp increase in the metro traffic on Tuesday. Several corporate houses welcomed the move, including DLF City, Nagarro Software Private Limited, and Dentsu, to name a few. Shri Ram School, too, asked parents and students to comply by not bringing cars to the school.
Advertising professional Jharna Kakoti, 31, said that her office, located in Cyber Hub, sent a circular encouraging employees to use alternate modes of travel. "We saw a fairly huge difference on the roads. Many of my colleagues travelled by the metro," said the Lajpat Nagar resident. Management employee Bornalee Goswami, 28, said that the initiative found few takers. "There are not many alternative modes. Autos in Gurgaon charge a lot," she said. "One cannot cycle all the way from South Delhi to work." Virk said that the initiative need to be welcomed by people to continue. "We will see how people react to it, and will then decide on whether we will continue it periodically," he said. Virk said that the initiative could be extended to other cities if the traffic cops know whom to target their campaign at. "Any place needs a homogenous group of people. Korsakoff’s Syndrome, which is vitamin B1 deficiency, generally caused by chronic alcoholism, is another way to destroy memories. The challenge is being able to target specific memories and erase them without causing other neurological damage. Research at MIT found that a type of drug, called an HDAC2 inhibitor, could affect this chromatin restructuring. Traveling in train... Ears fuzzy????
Health HealthNow Now September 2015 October 2015
Your ears often 'pop' because the tunnel changes the air pressure around the train. Air is always pressing in on your eardrums, but it's usually balanced against the pressure of air inside the ear. Going through a tunnel, air is forced past the train at higher speeds than outside: faster-flowing air exerts lower pressure, so the air inside your ear pushes the eardrum outward. Swallowing or yawning evens out the pressure inside your ear and your eardrum returns to its normal position with a pop. Coming out of the tunnel, your ears may have to pop again to get back to normal. GS Ear canal When you enter a tunnel, dive deep underwater or take off in a plane, the air pressure significantly changes in the ear canal. Eustachian tube Narrow tubes link the middle ear to the throat and usually balance out air pressure, but they can only counteract a certain level of external pressure. Eardrum If the pressure is too great this thin membrane bows inward, often resulting in a popping sensation. By yawning or chewing gum, the Eustachian tubes can be opened up and it will pop back again.

Gauge indoor air pollution
Health Gadgets
People in China are more aware than ever of air pollution and its detrimental health effects, and many companies big and small want to capitalize on the trend. New air purifier models enter the market almost every week, but how do you know if they really work? Beijing-based startup Origins Technology announced the launch of its latest product, the Laser Egg. The stylish air quality meter offers homes and small businesses an accurate way to monitor air pollution, and claims to be the best in its price range. The 4000 rupees device is battery powered and can easily be picked up with one hand. A simple display on the front shows the current air quality. Origins partnered with one of China’s most popular outdoor air quality monitoring apps for the launch of Laser Egg, in addition to its own app. The partnership will allow users of China Air Quality Index to view the pollution in their own home alongside the outdoor measurements in their cities. Furthermore, users of both apps will have access to a map function. Businesses that install a Laser Egg can upload their PM2.5 measurement in real time to the apps so users can look around them on the map for cafes, restaurants, and other places with clean air. The initiative is just getting off the ground, but co-founder Liam Bates says businesses have been extremely receptive to the idea. "For those that have invested already in air purifiers, they’ll spend a few hundred extra bucks and are able to tell everybody, show off that they have invested, and they do care about the air their customers are breathing. It’s really a no brainer for a lot of places," he says. Other businesses that haven’t installed air purifiers say they aren’t convinced customers will be able to tell the difference. "But once you can put it on a screen and say right now the air in here is 15 [PM2.5] and the air outside is 300 [PM2.5], then that completely changes everything," says Bates. Particulate matter – the harmful type of pollution residents in Chinese cities are most concerned with – can be measured in three ways. The first and most expensive exposes test paper to the air for a certain amount of time, and then analyzes that paper by blasting it with beta rays. These devices, such as the one installed at the US Embassy in Beijing, are highly accurate, but also quite large and cost around US$25,000. Not exactly an ideal inhome solution. Many air purifiers have built-in meters that use an infrared beam combined with a sensor to measure the opacity
of the air. This solution is cheap, perhaps less than US$10, but is also slow and inaccurate, Bates says. In between these two extremes is a method called light scattering. As the particles are pulled in by a fan, they pass in front of a laser. The laser refracts onto a photo sensor. This allows the device to instantly work out the size and number of particles in the air. These types of devices typically cost anywhere from US$500 to US$10,000, but Origins claims to use the same technology in Laser Egg at a fraction of the cost. "Laser Egg connects to wifi, knows where it is, and can calibrate accordingly," Bates says. "It takes an already accurate number via light scattering with the laser and downloads the right calibration."
The biggest challenge ahead for Origins is making people aware of the difference between the varying standards of air quality measurement. Not everyone is willing to have a sit-down discussion regarding the nuances of light scattering technology. Bates says, "I think word of mouth is going to be a really big factor here, because once you have one of these in your hands, the difference is obvious."
Bates, originally from Switzerland, was inspired to start his company when his then fiancee’s asthma returned shortly after moving to Beijing. Origins was founded in January 2014. The company’s first product was OxyBox, a home air purifier. Bates wouldn’t share sales figures for OxyBox, but he admits, "When you’re competing with the likes of Philips and Xiaomi, it’s a pretty tough marketplace." His fiancee, Canadian Jessica Lam, joined as a co-founder along with best friend Ken Ying from China. The startup has received a seed round of funding and is not currently seeking investment.
