This building has many inspirational qualities that match our visions of the site in Docklands. The grid-like structure creates a beautiful mesh alike our form finding chains. During the day light filters through a lightweight shell projecting the grid inside and at night it is lit up on the exterior creating another atmosphere in the space. A similar concept could be used to highlight our chain models.
The Mesh - Form & Chains
The digital and physical model of the grid is similar to our chain model structure. Similar to some of our chain iterations the form used voids for highlighted views and light to enter the space.
The “Chinese hat”, designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban was seen as an inspiration for the shell of the building.
The inner grid is projected on the thin outer skin at night by the interior lighting.

The diagrammatic process of the buildings for shows the journey of how the building was designed. It communicates that the organic outer shell informs the interior spaces. We can use organically shaped chain forms to create spaces within our building with the floor becoming the walls and the roof. We can also use a blanket like roof to encase these forms whilst also creating a space for public space such as an amphitheater.
The Mesh - Form & Chains
These images illustrate the progress of the concept of the interior space which influenced the organically shaped outer shell. It began with a landscape photograph of trees with lights projected between the empty space to becoming voids and structural support systems inspired by the trees.
The concept models of the structure closely relate to our chain link method. The organically shaped shell is created from the grid-like support system.
