01 Graphic Maps Dalmia Website HTAU had been tasked with the design of the family website for the Damlia Group. This was to ensure the future generations were aware of the history of the family and retained a sense of identity. As a part of this project, a set of maps was designed to graphically depict the history of the industries the Dalmia group has headed- coal, railways, banking and finance among others. After an initial draft had been designed by a previous intern, I worked on the next round of editing, a task that tested my graphic as well as software skills.
This map represents the cement division of the country, one of the main industries even today. The intent of the map, along with showing the plant locations, was for the industry in the background to appear as if it were building the Dalmia Cement name, a metaphorical statement as well.
4
The Banking and Finance map uses the reference of the popular board game, monopoly, to show how this division powered the rest of the different industries the group headed.
The motor, collieries and railway industrie shave all been represented in a single map with an intention of recreating the atmosphere of soot and grime one normally associates with these industries
The idea behind the Indian National Airways map was to recreate the airways advertisements that one would find in the time that industry was running. Thus one sees a similiar grphic style and colours. The silhouette of the aircraft is that of one of the planes owned at the time.
The Times of India was also one of the industries that the Dalmia group headed. A newspaper production line is what this map recreates with snippets of history in the body of the newspaper.
5
02 Working Drawings DBCL Township,Meghalaya The project was the masterplanning and architecture of an industrial township in Lumshnong Meghalaya for the Dalmia Bharat Cement Group. Such was the scale of the project, that it had been further divided into phases. During my term in the office, phase 1 and phase 2 were in the process where phase 1 included the construction of a few essential buildings and phase 2, the major earthworks for roads, pathways and water bodies. I was tasked with the drafting of the road sections (Part of Phase 2) as well as the formatting and annotation of the plot sheets. Later on in my training, I worked on the annotation of the building plot sheets (Part of Phase 1) as well as the drafting of the building elevations.

03 Labour Colony DBCL Township,Belgaum The project was the masterplanning and architecture of an industrial township in Belgaum,Karnataka for the Dalmia Bharat Cement Group. It was a priority of the architects to provide good quality of life in a small area to the labourers employed at the plant. The plans were developed on the basis of a rough idea of the arrangement of spaces that the architects had. The main strategy when designing was to minimise circulation and maximise storage.

The client for the design of this residence was a family who had lived all their live in the tea estates of Assam. A feature typical in the colonial style houses in these estates is a “Jaali Kamra” a verandah of sorts, surrounded by mesh on all side to keep the mosquitoes away. The design of the house was a play on that.

06 Presentation Work DBCL Township,Belgaum For a presentation to be made to the client on Belgaum Township masterplan and architecture, I was tasked with making explanatory diagrams, which tested my software skills. In the process also learnt a couple of new softwares. In adddition to these diagrams, I also made a detailed paper model of the built as well as assisted with a model of the entire site. The landscaping having been worked out to such detail,it was important to depict it as realistically so that the experience of each landscape type could be imagined by the client. This landscape plan, made entirely on Photoshop with the help of realistic images, captures the essence of the scheme.

The following diagrams give a sense of how the masterplan works, highlighting the merits of the decisions taken as well as showcasing it’s usability.

07 Book Layout Design DBCL Townships Another project the firm was involved with was the execution of the Masterplan Blueprint, a guide to making livable and sustainable townships in the future for the DBCL group. The mandate was to make an easy to read and navigate book. Still in its early stages,I was tasked with designing the basic layout of the book. While designing the book,it was realised that the book should be easy to use in a hurry be to the point have apparent structure to make navigation simple have eye catching visuals be convincing After understanding the principles of graphic design as best as I could,I went through many iterations for each element of the book.A work still in progress,it has evolved over time through much discussion between the principals and myself.
46
Iterations of the different types of pages that were to be designed-the section divider page and the body pages.
