How to pursue your health & wellness goals You want to be healthy and happy. Making that happen, though, is a lot easier to say than to do. Optimum health & wellness can be rather intimidating, but you can choose your own path. (Yes, do align your path with your doctor’s recommendations, but remember, he/she won’t be doing those deep squats for you…) Start with achievable goals, keep things simple, and stay positive, even if you get Coleen with her formidable golf foursome at our Founders’ Golf Benefit
off track. Keep trying, adjust as needed, and celebrate each success on the way. You may be surprised at how much you can accomplish. It’s a journey, not a race, so give yourself a lifetime to enjoy it. What are your health & wellness goals? What actions will help you achieve it? How is it going? Here’s what some of the Keiro Northwest Family members had to say…

Dear Friends, Happy Summer to all!!! What fun we have had with the recent successful Curry Dinner! It was such a wonderful way to bring friends, family, and caring community members to visit Keiro Northwest. This strong community support keeps us moving forward… knowing there are so many hurdles and speed bumps along the way with the everchanging health care regulations – it does take a village to be successful! I was recently sitting by the pond in the Keiro Garden for a bit of personal ‘zen’ time. There was a resident walking around the garden with a staff member and few other family members. They all greeted me with smiles and shared how important it is to get outside and enjoy the garden and how grateful they were to have this environment here for their mom. The family praised the staff, their compassion, and their attentiveness to her needs. How have we maintained a 5-star rating (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) since 2011? It takes a village of people who truly are passionate about our values… People from residents’ families to community members and staff at all levels and in all departments… believing in our core values… Respect • Trust • Compassion • Quality of Life • Family Thank you for allowing me to be part of this organization. If you haven’t yet stopped by to enjoy the garden or visit with the incredible staff… let’s do it together sometime soon!
Sincerely,
Brenda Handley Board President
Dear Keiro Northwest Family, Keiro Northwest (KNW) continues to adapt and change in an environment that is in constant flux due to health care reform, an evolving community, and labor market conditions. YOUR health, wellness, and lifestyle are high priorities… to create and enhance a continuum of programs and services that creates a seamless “pathway” that meets the goals of the individual and community. We support these “pathways” through technology (e.g. Electronic Health Records, telehealth), campus/ facility “Master Planning,” and partnerships to broaden our scope and scale of programs and services. Organization-wide “Exceptional Experience” training, through the guidance of Taylor Terao, influences our internal and external relationships, with our values at the core. Everything we do must truly and positively impact the lives of those we serve... Every day, I am humbled and grateful for how the KNW “Family” (staff and volunteers) supports this. A recent rehab patient shared this: I want to thank the staff at Keiro NW so very much for the excellent care that I received. My recovery from extensive back surgery has continued well since coming home. I am walking 5 miles per day now and doing the leg exercises daily that was recommended. Everyone who cared for me was genuinely understanding and compassionate, as well as very competent!”

Our 5th Annual Living Well Health Fair will feature over 50 exhibitors, speakers, demonstrations, and screenings that support health, wellness, and lifestyles of all… we hope to see you there, Saturday, October 22, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.! YOUR KNW is committed to learning and sharing “How To!”

When he returned, Mr. Li Jing kept watch over him, reported changes in his condition, and showed deep concern about his friend. He has a can-do attitude and a spirit of self-reliance that would make Hemingway proud.

Events Cheers and congrats to Gail Hashimoto, 20-year veteran Nikkei Horizons instructor of tai chi, qi gong, and meditation! Gail and her fellow instructors gathered for the annual Nikkei Horizons Instructor Appreciation Luncheon. It’s the one time of the year when our teachers meet; they usually work independently with their students. Thank you all, you make such an impact on your students! Smart diners Dick Yamasaki and Tommy Hirai opted for take-out before the crowds arrived at the first annual Curry Dinner. Reviews of the chicken curry were fantastic, and people loved the service. With over 650 dinners served, we exceeded our expectations for the event, and we have room to grow!
White River Temple dancers led the way to the boom of the taiko drums. At Keiro’s annual Summer Festival, residents, community members, volunteers, and staff danced together and ate delicious bon odori snacks. They cheered on contestants in the doughnut race and watermelon smashing contests, and loved the Okinawan-style taiko and performances. Viewers watched Seed: The Life of the Rice King and His Kin, by filmmaker Masanori Baba. The documentary was part of our ongoing film series, At the Movies with Keiro Northwest.
