A rehab success: Phuong Dinh Phuong, an 18-year-old college student, didn’t think she would need skilled nursing care. When the unthinkable happened, she found Keiro Northwest, our incredible rehab team, and her favorite caregivers – Nori the Keiro cat and Muffin the rehab doggy mascot. And Phuong got better, but in the beginning, it was difficult. I still remember, the first day I came to Keiro I cried a lot. I was fearful and scared, but I found Nori. She came in my room and since then I had a best friend. rear: Ray Tong, Jeffrey Hattori, Phuong’s Dad; center: Phuong’s Mom, Chie Kondo; front: Joyce Paraiso, Phuong, and Nori
I was so scared that I didn’t talk to anybody but Nori. Nori loves me and I love her too. She showed me around the facility by running away from me, because I’d chase her everywhere to hold her and pet her. By that chance, I talked to everybody, and I found out that Nori wasn’t my only friend. Phuong was motivated, and Chie, Eric, and Joyce – her rehab team – drew upon their considerable talents to help her regain her mobility and strength. Her parents came over from Vietnam, and they enjoyed simple pleasures, like microwaving popcorn together. The whole Keiro staff (including Nurse Doraemon, and Nurse Dinosaur, her handpicked nicknames) cheered her on, and Nori used her feline

charms to make Phuong feel at home. She even let Phuong dress her up in costumes. Muffin, a chihuahua with the heart of a St. Bernard, made her laugh. Continue on page 5

Dear Friends, Happy New Year of the Monkey! This is a special year for all of us. For me personally, I was born year of the Monkey, so gives me reason to stop and reflect on many areas of my life. Serving the community is a passion of mine. Since the beginning of my tenure as a board member of Keiro Northwest (then Nikkei Concerns) I realize that we are blessed to have directors who are forward thinkers. We as a nation are faced with many changes in health care and our elders along with their respective family members have complex choices to make. The board takes to heart the future needs of our elders, the organization and our community. We enter

A positive change for Asians with dementia For those with mild dementia, the right adult day care program offers hope for individuals and a respite opportunity for caregivers. Every Friday, Tomiko Sakiyama walks with her family to Kokoro Kai Adult Day Center in Bellevue. When staff and volunteers greet her, she animatedly responds and shares a big smile. Tomiko, who has dementia, spends 4 1/2 hours with her friends at Kokoro Kai in a safe environment, actively engaged in activities. Most importantly, her family gets a break from their 24/7 caregiving. Thanks to the support and familiar cultural activities at Kokoro Kai, Tomiko’s abilities have improved. She always liked singing, but she recovered former skills – recognizing numbers in bingo and Japanese characters in card games. After a couple of months, her spatial ability also improved. Tomiko is happy at Kokoro Kai and has a sense of belonging. “The atmosphere is relaxed and home-like with large windows facing a beautiful court yard. Their volunteers and staff provide participants with familiar languages, cultures, and food. I was happily surprised by her improved cognitive ability since participating in the program,” commented Kyoin Kim, Tomiko’s case manager at Asian Counseling & Referral Services.

Everybody was so friendly and helpful. I love everybody, and I gave nicknames to almost everybody because I’m not good at remembering names, like Nurse Doraemon, Nurse Dinosaur, Muffin’s Mama... I also loved talking and playing with other residents. I would hold Nori to Ms. Nobu, so she could pet her. I know that she loves cats, and the cat would make her happy. And when she was happy, I was happy too. Or, I would roll my wheelchair around the facility to just talk to the residents. I loved listening to their stories about the wars and history; it was much better than just sitting in class and learning from the books. Phuong has since left Keiro but continues her recuperation with ongoing physical therapy and doctor’s appointments. “I am very appreciative of the time that I was taken care of in Keiro. After I have recovered, I’ll come back to visit because Keiro is my family. I love Keiro.”

Everyone gets into the act when the Mamiya Family conducts their annual mochitsuki. Residents, volunteers, guests, and staff had a turn pounding or forming the sticky rice into yummy treats for the residents’ New Year celebration. Thank you, Mamiya Family!
Signs make it so official! Keiro Northwest signs replaced the old Seattle Keiro ones in January. They’re clean and bright, and they proudly announce our presence as Keiro Northwest.
Lunar New Year started a little early, in late January, with performances from Vietnamese SDA folks and the Tzu Chi Foundation members. Red envelopes and lucky candy treated the residents. The lion dance by the International Lion Dance Team wowed the audience. Each group brought us such richness to the holiday, and their enthusiasm and energy united them. Gung hay fat choy!
2016 Board Treasurer, Hideo Suganuma, and Kokoro Kai Director Naoko Ulstein give their thumbs-up for Keiro Northwest Board’s New Year’s Celebration. The festivities kicked off with a traditional kagami wari (sake barrel breaking ceremony) and words from Consul General Masahiro Omura. Past Board President Julie Ann Oiye officially passed the gavel to new Board President Brenda Handley, and all enjoyed dinner, catered by our own Keiro Northwest Catering team.

Akemi Sakiyama, Tomiko’s daughter-in-law, commented, “Many things are a struggle because of her Alzheimer’s disease. But my mother-in-law seems to function better since she started attending Kokoro Kai. Now she is willing to take a bath when we tell her that tomorrow is a Kokoro Kai day. Fridays became our true respite day when we can relax while she is at the center.” The purpose of Kokoro Kai is simple - to create a safe and social environment for elderly with memory and/or mobility issues. Even if she doesn’t remember what she did, Tomiko looks forward to Fridays, thanks to Kokoro Kai. Kokoro Kai in Bellevue is open Tuesdays and Fridays 10:00am-2:30pm.
