Bigger and better for the Year of the Dog Keiro Northwest’s 2nd Annual Lunar New Year Celebration was a party and a fundraiser, where old friends reunited, new friendships blossomed, and all were united to enhance the Keiro Northwest experience for the residents and participants. The event raised almost $400,000, doubling last year’s event. The Fund-A-Need alone generated $100,000 for the Keiro Café, a spacious and comfortable getaway for residents and their loved ones. Our heartfelt thanks go to the guests, sponsors, donors, and volunteers, whose support and belief in Keiro Northwest is so incredible. Continued on page 4

The Seattle Seahawks’ Manu Tuiasosopo, Jenny Li Moriguchi, and Tomio Moriguchi posed for a quick pic at the VIP Reception.

The UW Huskies’ Don McKeta and his wife, Joni, hammed it up with Board President Frank Fukui and his wife, Penny, in front of the sponsor screen.

Our thanks to these sports legends for adding sizzle to the event.

Dear Friends, Hello! I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Frank Fukui, the newKeiro Northwest Board President. I have believed in Keiro Northwest for many years, as a volunteer, a donor, a golfer, a guest, a sponsor, a Board member (since 2014), a Board officer, and now as president. My father was a Keiro resident and my mother a Kokoro Kai participant, so I appreciate how much Keiro Northwest affects families as well as loved ones. In January, we said farewell to Jeffrey Hattori, long-time Keiro Northwest CEO, and wish him the best. The Board will conduct a search for a new CEO but is grateful to Bridgette Takeuchi, Chief Financial Officer/Chief Strategic Officer, for leading Keiro Northwest in the interim. The Board and I will work closely with Bridgette and welcome her fresh perspective. At the recent Town Hall Meeting, Bridgette and I had the opportunity to share what’s going on, get feedback, and answer questions. We will schedule another one later this year and we encourage everyone to attend. Thank you all who attended the 2nd Annual Keiro Northwest Lunar New Year Celebration. It raised almost $400,000, a huge success, because of our generous friends and loyal supporters. We welcomed new members to the Keiro Northwest Family and caught up with old friends. The healthcare arena is very different from the old days. Things were far simpler back then, but I know that Keiro Northwest is up to the challenge. We have a strong board committed to serving the next generation and meeting their expectations. I thank recent board president, Brenda Handley, for her leadership and guidance as I learn the ropes.

All my best,

Frank Fukui

Board President

Dear Keiro Northwest Family & Friends – I have to admit the last couple of months have been a whirlwind. There have been many changes, and many new faces. And although change is hard, you feel the air of excitement. Personally I want to thank Jeffrey and

encouragement, and continued willingness to step up and help! We’re at the forefront of the evolution of and support from those who have been here, helping guide this next group, is inspiring. As I reflect on those in the room at the Lunar New Year Celebration, it makes me so proud to see how far we have come. We continue to broaden whom we serve and redefine “community”. The overwhelming success of the gala has been a huge boost for all of us who work hard to “Make Every Day the Best Day.” Thank you for your continued support! The entire team here at KNW feels this love and support every day, and it continually encourages us. I am honored to be here to serve this community. I look forward to the many great things to come for KNW! Sincerely,

The power trio of MCs Mimi Gan and Harold Taniguchi and auctioneer extraordinaire David Silvermann reunited for a wondrous event.

This hungry lion took a bite out of Koryee Lau on its way to the stage. The International Lion Dance Team performed a stunning event-opener in the packed room, winding in and out of the 450+ guests.

Huge thanks to our co-chairs, Denise Moriguchi & Rob Vong and Tyler Moriguchi & Thy Pham, and the Lunar New Year Celebration Committee. Their hands-on leadership, enthusiasm, and philanthropy infused energy into this growing event, and they introduced a new generation to Keiro Northwest events.

The Super-Silent Auction warmed up the crowd, with casual and fine dining experiences, art and collectibles, plus sporting event packages, and more! Those who placed guaranteed bids to ensure the win were placed in a special drawing for a double magnum of wine.

Neuroscience supports the theory that music is good for the brain as well as the soul. Research indicates that musical memory endures in dementia and Alzheimer’s patients. Through personalized playlists for each individual, music will give back happy and meaningful moments to residents who suffer from these diseases. We anticipate that the favorite tunes will also reduce the need for medications in all residents and encourage healthy eating habits.

Please enhance the resident experience with a gift to the Keiro Café or the Music & Memory® Project. 4

Hopeful guests like Board Vice President Bill Tashima went for the Wine Grab, where a prized bottle of Leonetti hid among the others.

Alwyn Chikamoto, the very proud winner of a Private Chef Dinner for 6 with the Japanese Consul General, triumphed over stiff competition. The Live Auction, with 26 incredible items (including several surprise opportunities), inspired big dreams and many bids. Treasured art, sporting collectibles, dining & athletic experiences, and travel getaways motivated bidders. The top bid of $9,000 by Omar and Christine Lee won a ZZ Wei painting, created exclusively for the event.

After a moving video highlighting the benefits of the Keiro Café, the Fund-a-Need project, Keiro Family Member Herb Tsuchiya shared his own perspective and commitment to the Café. Bidders raised their paddles in full support of a gathering space where residents and their families can feel comfortable.

Team jerseys represented all sports, and Tomoko Matsuno crafted her own clever tribute to Kobe Bryant. No black tie or ball gowns were required for this event, and guests loved wearing casual attire.

Reiko Kobyashi-Wagner, Hiroko KobyashiWagner, and Teri McLaughlin, staff members at Nikkei Manor, joined in the festivities thanks to an anonymous donor who gifted two tables for employees.

Volunteers Lisa Storniolo and Sara Storniolo brought prized Live Auction items to the stage for all to see. Dozens of volunteers behind the scenes made the magic happen, at the event and in preparation days, weeks, and months ahead of the big day.
