Adventures in the Land of Souls 33 Nikkei Horizons adventurers witnessed unique worlds, both old and new, in the Land of Souls — Southern Japan (Hiroshima, Kyushu, Shikoku, and Shodo Island, Kobe). The group visited popular sites like Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, the Great Torii at Miyajima Island, and Himeji Castle. They also took the road less traveled,

exploring Yufuin, Yawatahama, and Uwajima, where local public officials treated them like VIPs, viewing traditional performances, shopping in the local markets, and dining on a variety of tempting cuisine. Priceless memories will remain with them forever of Mt. Aso on Kyushu, bull fights and pearl hunting in Uwajima, cherry blossoms in Takamatsu and Kobe, and watching the soy sauce brewing process on Shodo-shima Island. The adventurers made friends everywhere they went and celebrated three birthdays during the trip. Dear Friends, Happy Spring! We are blessed here in the Pacific Northwest for many reasons. The weather has allowed our friends and families to enjoy more outdoor activities, maybe taking us beyond our comfort level. Broadening our personal horizons. As an organization, Keiro Northwest (KNW) has taken it a step further. KNW has expanded our view by stretching objectives to include services that can benefit the entire community. I listened to stories from many participants about a recent Horizons program providing a once-in-a lifetime trip to Japan. It’s such a thrill to know that they returned with all great experiences. Keiro Northwest also allows the community to stretch our taste buds through our Catering Program. I

great heights, surpassing our $50,000 goal. Motivations were numerous. Many took advantage of scheduling

their donations early, offered for the first time this year. Others found inspiration in a $5000 gift challenge, which matched contributions $500 and above. 50+ donors honored someone important to them with a tribute gift. And workplace matching gifts will make many donors’ donations go even further. Despite technical issues with the credit card platform, our supporters didn’t give up. If their donations didn’t go through at first, they kept trying or contacted Patty Hiroo Mastrude, Philanthropy Manager, to make things right. Over 60% of the donors even paid for the credit card fees, so more would go to support the residents and participants. Keiro Northwest’s giveBIG donors gave over $54,000. Many thanks to the 261 families and individuals who made this fundraiser such a huge success. giveBIG, the Seattle Foundation’s (usually) 1-day charitable online giving event, took place on May 3 and 4 and raised $21 million for area non-profit organizations.

Rose Dracobly and Janice Deguchi met lots of Eastside seniors and health professionals at the Overlake Active Senior Health Fair in Bellevue. We felt so welcome at our first public venture with our new name, Keiro Northwest.
We chatted with visitors — some familiar faces, others were new friends — at the Cherry Blossom Festival at Seattle Center. Clever balloon animals drew crowds, and people were amazed at the breadth of services we offer.
New Keiro Northwest board member, Jerry Lee, competed in the Hum Bow Eating Contest at the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration but faced an honorable defeat by champion Siemny Kim. At the Keiro Northwest table, we cheered on Jerry and connected with the visitors and residents who stopped by.
Employee insights Silverio “Io” Godinez, Nikkei Manor Cook Silverio “Io” Godinez – pop artist, dedicated Keiro Northwest cook, and product of his own passions – merges his inspirations through his drawings and also through work. He is the mastermind behind the Summer Art Walk at Nikkei Manor, on Thursday August 18.
Io background: Io grew up drawing popular comics and cartoons. When Io’s grandfather introduced
Io at Jack Nicholson’s (“The Joker”) imprint in the forecourt of the TCL (formerly Grauman’s) Chinese Theatre
him to Tim Burton’s Batman, he was hooked. “If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be into superheroes.” Io holds degrees in Fine Arts and Interdisciplinary Visual Arts.
Io style: He blends subjects from anime, movies, comics, and hip hop with modern/contemporary works (like 80s artist Keith Haring) to create imagery that resonates with everyone. ”A kid might not know what it is until I mesh it into some Ninja Turtles.” Currently, Io draws people who have influenced him. For the Art Walk, he will feature his grandparents, who encouraged him and nurtured his love of superheroes.
Io on art & wellness: “Art is part of everything; everything you see is art. Keep making art. I want my audience to be a part of a moment, to relive their memories.”
Io on the Art Walk: Io sees the Art Walk as a showcase for resident, employee, and local community artists – some long-time and self-taught, others who discovered their talent in recent years. “I feel

Keiro resident Bill Ogasawara and employees from several Keiro Northwest departments celebrated Nursing Home Week’s Birthday Party Day with a group pic. Themed days of food, contests, and selfies honored everyone at Keiro all week long, May 8-14.
Nikkei Manor’s Vicky Pena pitched in to help clean the employee lounge for Keiro Northwest’s Clean & Safe Day. Employees at both Nikkei Manor and Keiro scrubbed, wiped, swept, and tidied to make both locations clean and sparkly for Earth Day.
Nikkei Manor resident Hiro Nishimura gained insight from Lori Whaley’s inspiring seminar, Courage of a Samurai. Lori shared stories from her book that illustrated how we can embrace the ancient Japanese code of Bushido to live life with honor, courage, and integrity. Afterward, she directed her storytelling toward the Keiro residents, bringing Japanese folk tales to life, and with hand puppets!
Kokoro Kai participants Akiko Wyland, Setsuko Ainsworth, and Kinko Katagiri welcomed in the new year at the Shinnenkai Luncheon in March. Heartfelt words from volunteers and staff, songs from the Rainbow Chorus, companionship, some door prizes, and a little Zumba brought participants, volunteers, and staff closer together.
Thao Ngo, a new outing escort volunteer, met CEO Jeffrey Hattori at the Volunteer Appreciation Week Luncheon, part one. (We scheduled two luncheons to make sure that everyone felt included.) Deep appreciation went out to those volunteers with 5, 10, 20, and more years of service. Good food, provided by Keiro Northwest Catering, fun door prizes, and a small gift made the event lively and fun.

In your 80s… you want to take it easy, so you move to Nikkei Manor, where you socialize and participate in activities when you’re not exploring the International District. You let the staff take care of the boring housework. One day, you fracture a hip and utilize short-term rehab services with a “hotel–like” private room at Keiro Rehabilitation & Care Center. Friendly and highly qualified therapists quickly get you back on your feet, and drivers with KNW Transportation provide “door-to-door” service for your doctor’s appointments. You return home sooner than you thought. And you’re still enjoying lifelong learning through Nikkei Horizons. Throughout this journey you constantly experience the KNW Way Values of Respect, Trust, Compassion, Quality of Life, and Family. As we transform, we must understand the needs/wants of our community, be well positioned, make significant investments and take calculated risks. Health care reform and other external factors continue to reveal challenges and opportunities to which we are constantly adapting. We are grateful for the tremendous faith and support that our community provides KNW… for it truly inspires us to pursue excellence for you and our community!
Your CEO,
Jeffrey
