Welcome Letter From The Board Dear Keiro Family & Friends, It is a compliment being elected as Chair by the Keiro Board. This is a unique opportunity to honor and continue to carry on the unfaltering work and legacy crafted by the founding members of Issei Concerns 45 years ago. I will make every effort to honor the initial mission to serve the elderly in a high-level health care program with a culturally sensitive atmosphere. At that time, about seventy (mostly elderly) Issei in our community were residents in about a dozen Seattlearea nursing homes. Most residents were well cared for; however, many were longing for both Japanese-language care and their native nourishments. Then, as a new organization, every effort was made to contact local Nikkei organizations to explain the concept of the nursing care program, while asking for support and financial help. My mother, aunt, and countless elderly family and friends have been well cared for at Keiro. Fortunately, not every elderly within our community will require nursing home level care; however, the need for conscientious care for a few of our community elderly will always be there. The payment system for nursing home care continues to evolve, creating new and on-going challenges. Because of these external transformations, Keiro has the responsibility to inform our constituents of these challenges and required changes to the survey process. Working together and implementing required Tomio Moriguchi changes, and with new contributions, Keiro will survive and mature to provide Board President the continued high-level elderly health care needs of our community.
Letter From The CEO Dear Keiro Family & Friends, It has been an interesting and adventure packed 2018! As I reflect on the past year, I can’t help but feel like it’s been a lifetime since we rung in 2018 – yet it all happened so fast! I have learned so much, met so many new faces, and been presented with challenges that have helped me grow in ways I did not even know possible. As I have settled into this role with the Keiro team, the greatest lesson I have learned is that no day is like any other and you never quite know what to expect. The speed and constant change, in addition to the challenges of healthcare, have presented a unique opportunity as we look to set strategy for the future of this great organization. Over the course of the last year, many members of the community have offered their guidance, insights, and historical knowledge. Understanding where we came from and how we got here will be integral as we set a path forward. For that I am grateful for our Board of Directors, particularly Frank Fukui. As we’ve learned more about our current state of union in this past year, it has become apparent that Keiro is at a pivotal place in our history. Like many, I am excited to welcome back one of our founders to lead us in the charge to determine what is next for Keiro. I have long admired Tomio and his family’s contribution to our community and I look forward to learning under his tutelage. 2019 will be a year filled with changes and a movement towards the next phase of Keiro’s history. I look forward to seeing what each day will bring! May you and yours have a wonderful new year and may 2019 bring all of you many good fortunes! 2
Bridgette Takeuchi Chief Executive Officer
Campaigns Keiro Northwest (formerly Issei/Nikkei Concerns) was founded in 1976 to address an urgent need to provide better nursing and related health care for the elderly. Japanese American community leaders – seeing the aging of the first generation of pioneers – were committed to providing a dignified environment for these individuals to spend their remaining years. Defying long odds, an uneven history of collaboration and vocal skeptics, these community leaders established Seattle Keiro, a Japanese nursing home. Over the years the community built and continued to grow a thriving nonprofit organization to support not only the nursing home, but growing programming such as Rehab Care, Assisted Living, Home Care, Kokoro Kai (adult day center), and Horizons (continuing education and travel). As time has moved on, the needs of elders, how they want to age, and the continued growing challenges of the healthcare industry have presented a new set of challenges for Keiro Northwest. Keiro Northwest recognizes that the future of elder care is providing services that allow our loved ones to age in place. And this puts us, once again, in a place where we will need to defy long odds, need exceptional collaboration, and overcome very vocal skeptics. The 40 More Years campaign is our rallying cry, to pull together the community that founded and grew this organization to what it is today ... to rally the growing community that uses and benefits from our services today... and to call to action the future community that will someday need our services. A portion of proceeds will go towards growing our programs that will better meet the needs of the evolution of aged services, for now and in the future. A portion of proceeds will go towards the Keiro Northwest Endowment Fund to benefit future generations for years to come. We believe that the culturally sensitive services we provide are valued and important for the aged. Without our services, our community will be back where we once were 40+ years ago.
PLEASE JOIN US IN OUR FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE OF KEIRO NORTHWEST | #40MOREYEARS!
CAMPAIGN MISSION Our goal is to raise $4M!
People want to age in place Help us grow our programming to meet this need

Keiro Conversations We would like to thank Matt Macklin for his informative presentation on December 4th!
Q A
What is the survey process? The survey (inspection) is done on behalf of CMS by the individual State Survey Agencies. The functions the States perform for CMS under the agreements in Section1864 of the Social Security Act are referred to collectively as the certification process. This includes, but is not limited to: Identifying Potential Participants, Conducting Investigations and Fact-Finding Surveys, Certifying and Recertifying, and Explaining Requirements. Keiro is a 5-Star facility! Being 5-Star is an honor only enjoyed by the top 20 percent of facilities in the state. In Washington state, that’s the top 44 of 220 facilities.

DECEMBER 4TH RECAP
New Board President Tomio Moriguchi Announced New Board President
I
n Keiro Northwest’s annual tradition, new board members and new officers are elected at the beginning of the year. Keiro is very grateful for the service of Frank Fukui who has served as a Board Director since 2014 and Board President for 2018. Mr. Fukui will continue to serve as a Board Director through his Board term (ending 2019). This is a critical time for the organization as the Board of Directors recently launched their 40 More Years campaign. The campaign mission is to raise $4million as an investment in the organization and in the future of their invaluable services to the community. As the organization contemplates the future and works to rally the community, the organization looked to a familiar face to the lead the charge. Tomio Moriguchi, former CEO Uwajimaya and co-founder of Keiro Northwest, has accepted the position of Board President. Mr. Fukui noted, “As my colleagues and I contemplated who should lead the charge in 2019, there was only one name that came to mind. Tomio and his contemporaries did what was once thought impossible, and Keiro is still here despite the challenges of the industry and the changes to our community. As we look to the future Tomio represents the strength and resilience we want to exemplify, and what we need, to guide our future.”
from Nikkei Concerns to Keiro Northwest and the change in mission to serve the broader Asian Pacific Islander (API) community. “When we changed the mission, our goal was to acknowledge that the Japanese-American community alone could not sustain our organization long term. Our focus going forward is to guide our traditional support toward this more inclusive mission and engage the broader API community to join us. I’m looking forward to working with Bridgette and her team as we make this a priority in 2019.” Bridgette Takeuchi, CEO, noted, “This is an exciting time for Keiro NW. Tomio and Julie Ann bring a unique combination of legacy and heritage, while being progressive and forward thinking. They both were with this organization at key moments in which changes weren’t necessarily popular or understood. I look forward to working with them as we guide Keiro NW through this next evolution of change for the future. I’m especially grateful that I will still be able to count on Frank as well, he has been instrumental to my success here this past year.” The organization will announce its full slate of officers and directors for 2019 after the annual Shinnen Kai (January 2019).
Tomio Moriguchi added, “The primary goal of the initial nursing home was to serve the Issei, who sadly have mostly moved on. My mother, aunt, and countless friends were cared for at Keiro. This need will not go away; however, the needs have changed and the industry has become very complex. We have a responsibility to inform our constituents of these challenges and to respond by making changes. It is an honor to carry on the work and legacy we started 45 years ago with the other founding members. I am confident we will be able to lead Keiro in a direction where we will continue to serve the community as we have for so many years.” In support of Mr. Moriguchi, Julie Ann Oiye, past Board President, has accepted the position of Vice President. Ms. Oiye was instrumental in the transition of the organization

Tax Law Update Dear Donors, We wanted to ensure that you are familiar with the new tax law put in place this year. Starting in 2018, the standard deduction increased from $6,300 to $12,000 for single filers and from $12,700 to $24,000 for those who are married and filing jointly. Due to this change, a majority of our generous donors will not receive any tax benefits from their donation. TO RECEIVE TAX BENEFITS, those over 59.5 years of age should make donations from an IRA or 401k. Donations from retirement accounts can be made tax free.

Your Donor Dollars At Work The generosity of our donors is the sole reason we exist to serve our community. We want to make sure you are always informed on how your donations are being utilized at Keiro Northwest. Recently, your dollars have provided us with much needed building upgrades. Meet Matt Macklin continued… As an expert in healthcare operations and experience as an Executive Vice President and consultant, Matt Macklin has seen the word “leadership” defined a multitude of ways over the years.
