You will visit her studio and experience frameable pulp painting. Pulp painting is an exciting aspect of papermaking where you can apply colored pulps to a couched sheet of paper and easily accomplished with Japanese fiber kozo and abaca. You will use 11” x 14” size of sheet of paper as a canvas and specially prepared pulps become paint. You can will create your own color for their images and apply the pulp paints by squirting, spooning, or tossing them onto the paper. The Arthritis Foundation’s Walk with Ease program is proven to reduce the pain of arthritis and improve your overall health. The eight week program will teach you how to safely make physical activity part of your everyday life and develop a walking plan that will meet your needs, stay motivated, manage your pain, and learning to exercise safely. Studies by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging of the University of North Carolina show that Walk With Ease is proven to:

Winter Home Fire Safety is a very important and timely issue. This workshop is designed to inform how to prevent home fires, how to respond to a fire at home, smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) alarms, and fire extinguisher basics. It’s a fact that the elderly, aged 65 and over, face a higher risk of experiencing home fires compared to that of the rest of the population. WI16/C-28 ENHANCEFITNESS A full hour of fun with lively music! EnhanceFitness focuses on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance and flexibility – everything that active older adults (55 & up) need to maintain health and function as they age. This class is highly adaptable for all fitness levels and includes the option to use a chair for support. Weights are provided. A certified EnhanceFitness instructor will guide your progress. We recommend taking the class at least twice a week. This class does not require special permission from your doctor but we need your doctor’s contact information to send a notification letter. Nikkei Horizons Investment Club (NHIC) brings individual investors together to learn about buying, holding and selling stocks and other investments. The Club’s mission is to provide a program of sound investment information, education and support while making it fun at the same time. Participants are all novices learning in a hands-on manner – active participation is expected. NHIC is one of thousands of clubs throughout the U.S. with membership in the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC). Kathy Carmichael learned Mizuhiki from Grand Master Haruko Shimizu since 1997 and achieved master status. She coordinates Nikkei Horizons’ Mizuhiki Advanced class. Elizabeth Daza has been teaching a Yin Yoga class at Bala Yoga and has 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training and has been a fitness instructor for many years. Carla Furukawa brings her twenty-first century energy to her Hanafuda class and fills it with lots of smiles. She has worked for the City of Bellevue Police Department for 35 years and is affiliated with Bellevue Sister Cities Association (BSCA), Bellevue Botanical Gardens and Highline Badminton Club, serving as Secretary. Cindy Jaffe specializes in “yoga for longevity” working with students who have limited mobility and health concerns to regain physical capabilities.
Marcia Almassy instructs the Knitting & Crocheting class jointly with her mother, Sallie Yamada. Marcia learned to knit and crochet as a child and has participated in the Knitting & Crocheting class since 2005.
Yu San Gartz started her ballroom dance career in 1978 and taught for over 20 years. She obtained her fitness specialist certificate and is certified instructor for both EnhanceFitness and Zumba.
A.C. Arai became the coordinator of the Kimochi Band and the Niko Niko Band after playing with the Nikkei Horizons Ukulele Band. She generously shares her skills and leadership with other ukulele players in the community.
John Iwai is an accomplished ukulele player and began teaching Beginning Ukulele classes in 2004. He also assisted with Jack Akamine’s ukulele classes. His teaching style gives new students the confidence to continue with the ukulele and keep performing.
Eric Ashihara started teaching our computer classes in 2008. His students gain confidence and have fun in his classes. He is a retired Boeing engineer with extensive computer and digital media knowledge and experience.
Chifumi Junior is a native Japanese speaker and holds a Japanese high school teaching certificate. She has various teaching experience including preschool and kindergarten in Europe and the US.
Henrylyn Kau’i Auwae has been dancing Hula, Tahitian, and other Polynesian dances with her family and various Kumu Hula (hula masters) throughout Hawai’i for much of her life. She has also taught ‘Olelo Hawai’i (Hawaiian Language) and medical food cooking. She is a certified HOT HULA fitness® instructor and the HOT HULA fitness® Washington State Area Manager. Minako Brunelle taught Japanese language at Seattle Central Community College and Seattle University for 20 years. She joined Nikkei Horizons Ukulele class in 2009 and is now leading the Niko Niko Band. She puts the smile in Niko Niko!
Fukuko (Koko) Kobayashi is from Yokohama, Japan, and was a teaching assistant at Ohio State University. She has been introducing the Hyakunin Isshu game as a volunteer at Nikkei Manor since 2008 and teaching classes at Nikkei Horizons since winter 2009. Pat Kono is a certified American Contract Bridge League, Silver Life Master Bridge player and coaches our weekly Bridge Club. Jones and works with clients on investing for college education and retirement. He has been teaching our ever-popular Finance class since 1994 and began advising the Nikkei Horizons Investment Club in Winter 2010. Joe Matsudaira helps coordinate the Pickleball Club. He joined the club in 2010 and is one of the best players. Miyuki Mitsumoto has been the Japanese Conversation for Fun! class instructor since 2007 and started teach- ing the beginners’ class in the spring 2010. She has graciously taken on the Japanese writing classes and has ex- perience tutoring students of all ages in Japanese. Edward Moore has studied the long and short Yang Family hand forms, as well as the sword, saber and push hands directly from Master Yang family in Seattle since 2000. He became a formal disciple of Master Yang Jun and has been teaching at Nikkei Horizons since 2014. Gail Mukai has practiced Tai Chi for many years and started assisting Dr. Kuwada’s classes in 1995. She has been a Tai Chi instructor since 1999. Dick Nagaoka has been playing ukulele for three years and is one of the leaders of the Na Aikane Band. He also enjoys playing with several local ukulele groups. Kayoko Nakajima is an IAIM certified post maternity instructor and provides services to the communities as a post partum doula.
Eugene Tagawa joined Nikkei Horizons as a computer instructor in 2009. He is a graphic designer and has pursued photography as a serious hobby since junior high school. Midori Kono Thiel has over 25 years of experience teaching sumi painting and Japanese calligraphy. She has conducted teacher workshops for the Washington State Arts Alliance and is an artist-in-schools for Seattle, King County, and the Washington State Arts Commission. She has been with Nikkei Horizons since 2003.

PARKING: For classes at the Seattle Buddhist Church (SBC), students may use the church parking lot on the corner of 16th Ave. S. and S. Main St. For classes at Nikkei Manor, parking is limited. CLASSES: Classes are scheduled for 8 to 10 weeks, unless otherwise specified. In general, for a class or workshop, the minimum number of participants is four to five students. For tours, the minimum varies. REFUNDS & CREDITS: Nikkei Horizons reserves the right to cancel any class, workshop or tour due to insufficient registration, can-
cellation of venue, or withdrawal of an instructor. In the event of a cancellation, a refund or a credit will be provided. Full tuition credit will be granted for classes, if you withdraw before the start of the second class. For workshops and local tours, you must withdraw 10 days before the date of the workshop, in order to receive full tuition credit. A credit will not be granted after the second class, except in the case of a medical emergency. In such cases, a copy of a doctor’s order is required. Credits are valid until they are used up to take other classes. Refund checks take 2~3 weeks to process. Annual membership will not be refunded or credited in any case. WAIVER: All participants must sign a Nikkei Concerns Waiver on the registration form each quarter before attending any class, workshop or tour. IMPORTANT NOTES: Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. KEIRO NORTHWEST WAIVER Please fill out and SIGN THIS WAIVER and send with the registration form. I, the undersigned, am a voluntary participant in the Nikkei Horizons program of Keiro Northwest and I accept full responsibility for such participation. To the extent necessary, because of my health history and general physical condition, I have consulted my personal physician for advice and approval before participation and agree to obtain my own health or accident insurance to cover accidental injury or illness. I recognize the risks of injury and illness involved in any physical activity including exercise, in the use of power equipment (e.g. electric or gas), sharp tools, chemicals or any other potentially hazardous material or equipment. I understand that responsibility is not assumed by the leaders, volunteers, sponsoring organization or facility. I specifically agree to hold harmless said leaders, volunteers, sponsoring organization, or facility housing this program from any damages I suffer for any injury or illness attributable to my participation. By signing my name below I acknowledge and accept the risk and responsibility for my health and safety and waive to the fullest extent allowable by law any claim I may have for illness or injury against the program, its sponsoring organization, employees or volunteers, and against the facility housing the program.
CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS: Nikkei Horizons reserves the right to cancel any class, workshop or tour due to insufficient registration, cancellation of venue, or withdrawal of an instructor. In the event of a cancellation, a refund or a credit will be provided. Full tuition credit will be granted for classes, if you withdraw before the start of the second class. For workshops and local tours, you must withdraw 10 days before the date of the workshop, in order to receive full tuition credit. A credit will not be granted after the second class, except in the case of a medical emergency. In such cases, a copy of a doctor’s order is required. Credits are valid until they are used up to take other classes. Refund checks take 2-3 weeks to process. Annual Memberhip will not be refunded or credited in
