PROJEKT 98

Burggasse 98 - 1070 Wien, Austria

„There are a lot of opportunities and unused spaces in Vienna.“

The 7th district „Neubau“ in the heart of Vienna is the artdistrict of the capital

Started in 2014, „Projekt 98“ transforms a 150 year old rowhouse in the artdistrict of Vienna into a contemporary art and designfactory. A small house at Burggasse 98, in Vienna, attracts attention. A more than 150 year old row house in the art district „Neubau“ starts to transform into an artobject. In comparism to the houses next to it, the small house on number 98 of the Burggasse looks like a dwarf. But this characteristic will be turned into an advantage. Projekt 98 will use installations, projections, sculptural elements, design and paintings, to make the house and its sourrounding look more interesting.

„Projekt 98“ wants to give young artists and designers the opportunity to expose their work to the public. To find the right location for the project was not easy: The whole „art district“ is actually a „safety zone“. That means you have to get a permit for every change of the facade. We got interested, since these rules do not apply to our object. Numerous projects are running to provide local and international artists surface to expose their work. By coordinating, connecting and supporting artists and designers, Projekt 98 will strenghten the art and designscene of Vienna. We want to create synergy with local and international artists and projects.

„Puber“ does not stop for childrens paintings [01] or streetart works [02]. With the example of this graffiti writer, Projekt 98 wants to get to the bottom of this vandalistic artform.

[01]

In February 2014, the suspected graffiti sprayer Renato S. was arrested in Vienna. He is supposed to be „Puber“, who marked countless store and house fronts with his signature. In Vienna, the austrian police has evidence of property damage, beeing around 50.000 euros. 88 acts of vandalism are related to the young swiss. The prison sentence for a damage of that kind lies inbetween 3 and 5 years. Since the extreme activism of Puber in the streets of Vienna, the media got interested in the graffiti writer. The next morning, after the austrian „Vice“ published a provocative article about the artist, their bureau in Vienna was attacked by Pubers graffiti. Puber acts as political ac-

tivist by communicating with leaders of the city. After painting over childrens drawings on the frontwall of the school „Notre Dame“ in Burggasse, Thomas Blimlinger - head of the seventh district left Puber a message on the fence of the elementary school:

„To paint over paintings of children is the last straw!“[01] Puber answered by putting his signature over the message of the politician. Nobody is sure about Pubers identity and motives. But it is clear that the phenomenom of graffiti inhibits different reasons than solely vandalism. It can be described as a form of puristic communication. „Cornbread“ or „TAKI

183“are the pioneers, who started writing their name „all city“ in Philadelphia and New York of the 60s and 70s. These artists also spread their signature tousendfold on walls and trains throughout the city, so their name would be recognised „all city“. Graffiti is a contemporary protest for individual recognition in today‘s society, and Puber is definitely a successful example. Maybe we will see Pubers name mentioned in arthistory books and museums 50 years from now next to artists like Jean Michael Basquiat, Harald Naegeli, Keith Haring or Banksy - who also had trouble with the law starting their careers with graffiti. Puber raised awareness and discussion for a serious contemporary artform.
