PLATFORM REFORM:ENERGY PILGRIM ROUTE. AARHUS SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. 2014 BRIEF: MAKE CONCEPTUAL STRATEGIES FOR THE FUTURE OF GREENLANDIC VILLAGE KAPISILLIT, USING DISTRIBUTED, SMALL SCALE RENEWABLE ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE AS A DRIVER. DESIGN BOTH THE PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURES, BEARING IN MIND PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, MANAGEMENT AND STORAGE. YOUR STRATEGIES SHOULD BE GROUNDED IN TODAY’S PARAMETERS BUT LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE ALSO TO CREATE RESILIENCE OVER THE COMING 50 YEARS, CONSIDERING 2 POSSIBLE FUTURE SCENARIOS. DESIGN: THE PROPOSAL WAS MADE IN A GROUPWORK OF 4 PEOPLE AND IT PROPOSES TO LINK KAPISILIT WITH A CAPITAL CITY NUUK TO SOLVE THE SOCIAL ISSUES IN BOTH PLACES. THE LINKING PATH IS TO BE A ROUTE FOR CHILDEREN AND TRAVELERS TO HARVEST ENERGY ON THE ROAD AND ALSO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF NATURE AND SAVING THE RESOURCES.

A FILM CENTRE IN PRORA, A FORMER KDF BEACH RESORT IN ISLAND OF RUGEN, GERMANY AARHUS SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE. 2014 “TIME CANNOT BE STOPPED IN ITS TRACKS, BUT THERE IS NO CONSIDERATION IN THE ARSENAL OF PRESERVATION OF HOW ITS EFFECTS SHOULD BE MANAGED, HOW THE ‘PRESERVED’ COULD STAY ALIVE, AND YET EVOLVE.” REM KOOLHAAS, VENICE BIENNALE 2010 BRIEF: PHYSICALLY AIM IS TO CHOOSE AN ONE ACT OF ART FROM THE BERLIN UNIVERSITY OF ARTS (UNIVERSITÄT DER KÜNSTE BERLIN – UDK, AND TO PROVIDE THEM WITH A SPACE.IN A FORMER KDF BEACH RESORT COMPLEX IN ISLAND OF RUGEN , GERMANY. THE ACTION OF TRANSFORMATION SHOULD ENCOURAGE TO CRITICALLY EXPLORE WHAT RELATIONS 'ART' – ARTS LEARNING, PRODUCTION, EXHIBITION AND PERFORMANCE – MAY CONSTITUTE, AND HOW THE SPACES CAN FRAME THIS PROCESSES. IN THIS CONTEXT THE UDK ‘EXTENSION’ AND INHABITATION OF PRORA SHOULD BE TAKEN BEYOND THE SIMPLISTIC DEFINITION OF ‘ADAPTATION’ OF THE EXISTING BUILDING, SEEKING STRATEGIES, WHICH WOULD FAVOUR FLEXIBILITY AND CUSTOMISATION OVER STANDARDISATION. THIS PROGRAMME IS NOT TO DESIGN A LEARNING CENTRE, BUT RATHER TO THINK OF WAYS IN WHICH ARCHITECTURE CAN DEFINE RELATIONS – OPENING UP TO RADICAL AND PIONEERING IDEAS, INVENTION AND… PROVOCATION.

AN URBAN HOUSING SCHEME IN GLASGOW: TRAINSPOTTING HOUSING 2013 BRIEF: URBAN HOUSING STUDY PROJECT WITH A TITLE "TRAINSPOTTING HOUSING". PROJECT CONSISTS OF DEVELOPING MASTERPLAN FOR AN URBAN WASTELAND AREA IN GLASGOW, PROPOSAL OF AN APPROXIMATE 40 FLAT HOUSING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CALCULATIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS. DESIGN: THE AIM OF DESIGN SITUATED ON TOP OF A RAILWAY TUNNEL WAS TO MAXIMISE OPPORTUNITIES GIVEN BY THE RATHER DIFFICULT SITE CONDITIONS AND IN ITS RELATION PROVIDE SPACES FOR LIVING, WORKING AND INTERACTION FOR THE INHABITANTS. THE STRONGEST AND AT THE SAME TIME MOST AWKWARD FEATURE IS THE RAILWAY PENETRATING THE SITE, SO IN THE PROPOSAL THE HOUSING IS DIRECTLY BENEFITING FROM IT BY HAVING MAXIMISED , UNOBSTRUCTED URBAN VIEWS AND SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES. THE DESIGN IS ALSO A KEY BUILDING IN THE DEVELOPED MASTERPLAN WHICH IS AN EXTENSION OF THE APPROVED MASTERPLAN FOR COLLEGELANDS AREA.

GROUND PIPE The building outer skin at this time of year reduces heat losses from convection and protects against wind, precipitation and external noise providing a livable space all year round. Building is positioned to get the maximum winter sunlight deep into flats. Ground pipe brings preheated air into building skin which is then used as a main source for MVHR system installed in each flat to provide effective ventilation in the winter season. The dispensed heat is delivered outside of the skin. The efficiency of MVHR is maximised by the having straight ductwork , especially for the single bedroom flats and by having the intake ducts in the warmest places benefiting both ground preheated air form ground pipe and the solar gain of buffer zones. In winter south facing walls act as a solar collectors. The thrombe wall construction of these walls with a good transparent insulation material on the outer face involve coefficients of about 60-65%. By the information found it is estimated thet the energy gain per year and square metre area of transparent insulation is about 70 kWh/m2. The movable insulated shutter on the back of the wall helps to store the heat in the concrete mass and once open its released in bedrooms in night. The shutter also covers the windows next to the mass walls providing insulation for the night time and reducing losses .
27
THROMBE WALL PRINCIPLE Movable insulated back shutter
Heat released during the night by opening the shutter. Meanwhile shutter covers the window for a night next to this wall and reduces heat loss.

GROUND PIPE At this time of year the enclosed space between buildings is cross ventilated by openings at bottom and top. The internal structures can be cooled naturally. There are Six ground ducts, each one metre in diameter to draw in fresh cooled air which will then rise. The duct that links ground pipe and railway tunnel will now be open in order to provide additional pressure from the bottom everytime when a train passes by. When it happens, the moved air will mix with the cooled air and will provide air circulation within the enclosed skin. Two solar chimneys will help to create air circulation which will take the excessive air from the flats. Solar chimney tunel acts as a small sun buffer as well and is a usable an effective space for cloth drying since the warm air is raising through. The extensive use of thermal mass at south faces will help to exclude the unecessary solar gain during the day. The radiated heat from the thermal mass will be easily disposed in the night with cross-ventilation.

Heating demand per m2 annualy is 32kWh which rates the flat of almost 100m2 area between Low demand flat and Passive standart. Since the heating demand is only 2.8 kW, it is reasonable to use a minor electrical heating boiler in each of these 3 bedroom flats with an output of 3kW which sizes to around 760mm height, 265mm depth and 350mm width and costs around 675 pounds. This system will comply with a Scottish tidal power plan which will provide carbon free electrical power to be used. Therefore it is estimated that in near future this flat will be powered by carbon free energy.

A STUDY LIBRARY IN ST. ANDREWS. 2013 BRIEF: THE PROJECT CONCERNS THE DESIGN OF A STUDENT STUDY LIBRARY TO BE SITED IN ST. ANDREWS IN FIFE ON THE EAST COAST OF SCOTLAND. THE LIBRARY WILL BE IN ESSENCE A READING ROOM PRIMARILY FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, A PLACE CONDUCIVE TO READING AND STUDY TOGETHER WITH SUPPORTING ACCOMMODATION AND A LINKED RESIDENCE FOR A VISITING ACADEMIC. THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF THE READING ROOM SHOULD PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO HOW NATURAL LIGHT ENTERS AS WELL AS THE MATERIAL QUALITIES OF THE STRUCTURE AND FINISHES. DESIGN: THE PROPOSAL IS A “HOLISTIC DESIGN” FITTED INTO A HISTORICAL ENVIRONMENT. KNOWING THAT A STUDENT LIBRARY HOLDS VARIOUS DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND ACTIVITIES I CONCLUDED THAT EACH OF THESE SPACES REQUIRE DIFFERENT CODITIONS, AND MY JOB WAS TO JOIN THESE PART TOGETHER TO PROVIDE BOTH PRIVACY AND INTERACTION, LIGHT AND SHADE, AND ENVIRONMENTALY GOOD LIGHT CODITIONS AND ENCLOSING OR EXTRACTING HEAT. THE PROJECT WAS AWARDED BY SCOTTISH ECOLOGICAL DESIGN ASSOCIATIONS KRYSTINA JOHNSON AWARD

A PLACE FOR WORSHIP. JEWISH RITUAL BATHS. 2012 BRIEF: A VISIT WILL BE MADE TO THE TOWN OF INVERARY IN ARGYLL WHERE FOUR SITES ARE PROPOSED. THE PROJECT CONCERNS PROVISION OF A „HOUSE OF WORSHIP. EACH STUDENT WILL MAKE A SKETCH DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR TWO SITES. WITH TUTOR COMMENT, STUDENTS WILL THEN SELECT A PROPOSAL TO BE DEVELOPED. STUDENTS ARE AT LIBERTY TO DECIDE WHICH PARTICULAR RELIGIOUS GROUP WILL BE ACCOMMODATED, PREFERABLY ONE THAT IS NOT OF THE STUDENTS OWN BACKGROUND, AND THIS WILL REQUIRE INVESTIGATION INTO THE LITURGICAL PRACTICE OF THAT GROUP. DESIGN: THE CHOSEN THEME FOR THIS PROJECT IS A JEWISH RITUAL BATH “MIKVEH”. THE BUILDING IS MADE FOR EVERYONE TO EXPERIENCE JEWISH TRADITION AND FOR JEWS ITSELF TO MARK IMPORTANT POINTS IN EVERYDAY LIFE. THE CHALLENGE WAS TO RESPOND TO A REQUIREMENT TO CREATE A SPACE FOR CELEBRATION, PREPARING ONE FOR A CHANGES, TO IMMERSE IN A BATH AND TO REUNITE WITH THE COMMUNITY. THE BIILDING ALSO IS FITTED IN THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT AS A LANDMARK RESPONDING TO THE INVERARAY LOCH AND ALSO BENEFITING FROM IT BY GATHERING THE TIDAL WATER FOR THE BATHING PURPOSES.

TO WONDER: A HOUSE FOR 12 PHILOSOPHERS. 2012 BRIEF: DESIGN A RETREAT FOR 12 PHILOSOPHERS: EACH TO HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL ROOM IN WHICH „TO REST” AND „TO BATHE” AS WELL AS TO BE USED FOR STUDY AND REFLECTION, PLUS A COMMUNAL ROOM TO SIT AND „TO DINE” PLUS A NUMBER OF OTHER PLACES CONDUCIVE FOR TWO OR THREE PEOPLE TO DISCUSS AND A LARGER ROOM TO COLLECTIVELY DEBATE. STRUCTURE TO BE CONSIDERED FROM TIMBER. DESIGN: THE CHOSEN SITE FOR THE BUILDING “THE QUERRY” SITE DOMINATES THE FORMATION OF THE BUILDING AND THE PROGRAMME. THE MOUNTANIOUS SETTING ALLOWS FOR ONE TO GET AWAY FROM THE VILLAGE, TO STEP ON THE PATH OF THINKING, VISIT THE PHILOSOPHERS AND GET BACK TO THE VILLAGGE HAVING A VIEW ON THE BURIAL PLACES IN THE VALLEY OF KILMARTIN. EACH PHILOSOPHER HAS A SEPERATE LIVING UNIT WHICH CONSISTS OF TWO STORIES, ONE FOR LIVING AND ONE FOR WORKING. THE UPPER WORKING UNIT IS CONNECTED WITH A MAIN COMMON CORRIDORS IN WHICH THE PHILOSOPHERS CAN INTERACT AND EXCHANGE TOUGHTS. THE CURVED SHAPE OF THE CORRIDOR ALLOWS TO HAVE A PANORAMA ON THE TRACES OF THE OLD QUARRY WALL WHILE HAVING THE BURIAL PLACES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BUILDING AND COULD BE SEEN FROM THE WORKING ROOMS.

TO SETTLE: AN ART GALLERY IN EDINBURGH. 2012 BRIEF: WE MOVE FROM ONE LANDSCAPE TO ANOTHER, IN YET ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE. WE ARE THROUGH SIMPLY DWELLING; IT IS TIME TO SETTLE DOWN, TIME TO FLOURISH AND SERVE A COMMUNITY. WHAT IS IT THAT DETERMINES „THIS PLACE IS RIGHT ? WHAT IS IT THAT DETERMINES „IN THIS PLACE I SHALL REMAIN, THIS PLACE WILL BE MY FUTURE? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO „SETTLE”? DESIGN: THE ART GALLERY IS SITED IN EDINBURGH GRASSMARKET SITE RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL OF THE CASTLE AND IS MADE FOR A ARTIST ALASDAIR GRAY. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE WAS TO KEEP THE EXISTING COURTYARD OPEN FOR ANY OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES POSSIBLE HAVING A BUILDING WITH TWO STOREYS ON ONE SIDE OF IT AND HAVING A CENTRAL STAIRCASE CUTTING TROUGH THE COURTYARD IN THE MIDDLE. THIS STAIRCASE ALSO CONNECTS WITH THE EXISTING PATH THAT IS LEADING TO THE CASTLE AND IS CHERISHING THE SYSTEM OF THE OLD EDINBURGHS WYNDS AND ITS FESTIVE ENVIRONMENT.

TO DWELL: A TOWNHOUSE STUDIO FOR ARTIST ALASDAIR GRAY. 2012 BRIEF: IN THIS PROJECT, YOUR TASK IN CONSIDERING THE VERB „TO DWELL” IS TO DESIGN FROM THE OUTSIDE TO THE INSIDE, A PLACE THAT LOOKS LIKE HOME. THE CONTEXTUAL SETTING OF THE PROJECT IS INTENDED TO INTRODUCE YOU TO THE ISSUES OF FAÇADE WITHIN THE PECULIARITIES OF AN URBAN CONTEXT. IT IS THE STUDY OF THE TENSION BETWEEN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND THE INDIVIDUAL, THE DEMANDS OF RELATIVE ANONYMITY WITHIN THE URBAN GRAIN VERSUS PUBLIC EXPRESSION, AND THE DIVISION BETWEEN PRIVATE DOMAIN AND PUBLIC DISPLAY. ALSO AT PLAY ARE THE COMPOSITIONAL, PROPORTIONAL AND TECHNICAL DEMANDS OF CONTEMPORARY INFILL INTO AN HISTORIC BACKDROP. YOUR BRIEF IS TO DESIGN EXTERNAL STREET FAÇADE OF A HOME-STUDIO FOR EITHER A SCULPTOR OR A PORTRAIT PAINTER. THE SITE IS LOCATED ON THE HIGH STREET OF NORTH BERWICK AND YOU WILL UNDERTAKE A STUDY TRIP TO THE TOWN TO GATHER AS MUCH RESEARCH AS YOU CAN INTO THE CONTEXT OF YOU PROJECT. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CHOOSE ONE SITE FROM A SELECTION OF GIVEN SITES AND YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO MAKE A DETAILED VISUAL STUDY AND RECORD THE NECESSARY DIMENSIONAL INFORMATION OF NEIGHBOURING BUILDINGS TO ENABLE YOU TO PREPARE ACCURATE ELEVATIONAL DRAWINGS AND MODELS OF THE SURROUNDING CONTEXTURAL STREET FRONTAGE.

TO SHELTER: A STORYTELLERS HOUSE. 2011 BRIEF: IN THIS PROJECT WE MOVE FROM INVESTIGATIONS OF „MYSELF” IN A CONTAINED WORLD TO „MYSELF” IN THE SURROUNDING WORLD, IN THIS INSTANCE A NATURAL LANDSCAPE. HAVING EXPLORED SOLELY THE NOTION OF „INSIDE SPACE” DURING THE PREVIOUS PROJECT, ROOM WITH A VIEW NOW ASKS YOU TO INVESTIGATE TWO FURTHER ASPECTS OF ARCHITECTURE, THE CONNECTION OF „INSIDE TO OUTSIDE” AND THE IMPLICATIONS OF MAKING A MARK IN THE LANDSCAPE. THE OPENING NARRATIVE ASPIRES TO ACHIEVE EMOTION, ATMOSPHERE AND EXPERIENCE THROUGH A PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE, BUT WHAT IS THE METHODOLOGY WE CAN EMPLOY TO CREATE THIS? THE THREE SEQUENTIAL SKETCHES BY LE CORBUSIER APTLY SUM UP THE ARCHITECTURAL PROCESS TO CONNECT A VIEW WITH AN INTERIOR ACTIVITY, FIRSTLY THE SELECTION OF A PARTICULAR PART OF A LANDSCAPE, SECONDLY CHOOSING A PLACE TO VIEW THIS LANDSCAPE, FINALLY CONTAINING THE CAPTURED VIEW WITHIN AN ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT.

AB 106 - 1A TO SHELTER: A ROOM WITHOUT A VIEW
brief: In this project we investigate the architectural notion of „shelter”. The ability to create shelter is the simplest manmade response to our environment and one of the most basic of all human needs. Shelter may take a variety of forms, from hiding behind a rock to escape driving rain or seeking refuge in a cave, to more sophisticated solutions of manmade structures such as log cabins, tipees and yurts. When does a „shelter” become a form of architecture? By exploring these issues in relation to the human scale we can begin to understand our place in the world around us.

PROJECT TASKS: THE PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED JUST BY MYSELF INDIVIDUALLY. THE INITIAL TASK WAS TO COME UP WITH 3 DIFFERENT PROPOSALS SEARCHING FOR THE POSSIBLE WAYS OF USE AND ACTIVITIES THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE BUILDING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ALSO SEARCHING FOR THE POSSIBLE METHODS OF IMPLEMENTING SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES. I HAD TO FOCUS ON CREATING IDEAS THAT COULD BE BROUGHT TO A WORKSHOP WITH A POSSIBLE STAKEHOLDERS AND END USERS. THIS HAS BEEN SO FAR MY FIRST EXPERIENCE NOT ONLY PRODUCING VISUAL MATERIAL BUT ALSO GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THE CLIENT. BESIDES THAT I CREATED A DIGITAL PRESENTATIONS INCLUDING PLANS DIAGRAMS AND PHYSICAL MODELS WHICH HELPED TO EXPLAIN CONCEPTS.

1) THROUGH OCEAN WATER:
ALL GREEN PLANTS ABSORB CO2 AS PART OF PHOTOSYTHESIS. THE ABSORBED CARBON IS ONLY RELEASED BACK INTO ATMOSPHERE WHEN THE PLANT DIES AND ROTS OR IS BURNED.
CARBON DIOXIDE DISSOLVES IN SEA WATER DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE. TINY MARINE ANIMALS CALLED PHYTOPLANKTON EXTRACT CARBON FROM THE CARBON DIOXIDE TO MAKE THEIR SKELETONS AND SHELLS

SKOVBAKKESKOLEN SCHOOL BUILDING COMPETITION. 2014 WORK TIME: 215 HOURS PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A SCHOOL COMPETITION PROJECT WITH A TEAM OF 2 ARCHITECTS FROM AART AND ME WORKING ON IT AND HAVIN A FIRM RANDAHL & MOESBY AS AN ENGINEERING PARTNERS. THE BUDGET PROGRAMME IS SET TO BE 105 MILLION DKK. IT HAS TO SATISFY THE NEED OF 650 STUDENT PLACES, 100 STAFF AND 100 NURSERY MEMBERS. DESIGN IS BEING DEVELOPED BETWEEN 3 OF US UNDER SUPERVISION AND MENTORING BY THE LEADING PARTNER ANDERS TYRRESTRUP. TROUGHOUT THE PROCESS SEVERAL MEETINGS WITH THE END USERS WERE HELD. THE TIME PERIOD GIVEN FOR THIS PROJECT WAS FROM SEPTEMBER 2014 TO JANUARY 2015. THE CLIENT IS AN PRIVATE ENTERPRENEUR. PROJECT TASKS: I WAS ENTERING THE PROJECT AFTER A MONTH IT WAS LAUNCHED AND AT THAT TIME THE GENERAL CONCEPT FOR THE DESIGN WAS ALREADY AGREED AND I WAS WORKING ON THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT STAGE. YET THERE WERE DIALOGE MEETINGS INBETWEEN FOR WHICH I WAS PREPARING DIGITAL MATERIAL AS WELL WITH PHYSICAL MODELS IN SCALE OF 1:500 AND 1:100. I GOT THE CHANCE TO HELP THE TEAM WITH THE WORK THEY USUALLY DOESEN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO DO ON OTHER COMPETITIONS SUCH AS EXPLORATIONS IN SPACES AND INVESTIGATIONS ON DIFFERENT FACADE PRINCIPLES ETC SO IT WAS A RESPONSIBLE TASK TO DO. FOR THAT I USED PHYSICAL MODELS AS WELL WITH 3D MODELS AND SIMPLE RENDERINGS. DURING THIS TIME I SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED MY SKETCHUP SKILLS.

WORK SELECTED FOR 131 ARCH.IVE EXHIBITION, THE BRIGGAIT, GLASGOW. 131 ARCH.IVE EXHIBITS AND EXPOSES THE SELECTED WORKS OF STRATHCLYDE ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS. THERE IS CURRENTLY A SENSE WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSION THAT PEOPLE NO LONGER UNDERSTAND AN ARCHITECT’S ROLE IN THE MODERN WORLD; WHICH IS SUBSEQUENTLY DEVALUING THE PROFESSION. 131 ARCH.IVE AIMS TO COMBAT THIS MISUNDERSTANDING, BREAKING DOWN THE BARRIERS BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND OTHER INDUSTRIES BY SHOWCASING THE VAST DIVERSITY OF PROJECTS CARRIED OUT BY STUDENTS WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT. MANY OF THESE PROJECTS BREAK THE MOULD IN TERMS OF WHAT MIGHT BE CONSIDERED A TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT, PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF TECHNOLOGY, DEALING WITH REAL ISSUES, COLLABORATING WITH AN EXTREMELY DIVERSE FIELD OF INDUSTRIES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVING REAL IMPACT BEYOND THE WALLS OF THE ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT.
SCOTTISH ECOLOGICAL DESIGN ASSOCIATION (SEDA) KRYSTYNA JOHNSON AWARD 2013. THE PROJECT WAS EXHIBITED IN CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH CENTRE THE LIGHTHOUSE IN GLASGOW, SCOTLTAND. THE INTENTION OF THE AWARD IS TO RECOGNISE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN BY STUDENTS STILL GROWING INTO ARCHITECTURE. ALL FIVE SCOTTISH SCHOOLS OF ARCHITECTURE WERE ASKED TO PUT FORWARD A CURRENT PROJECT FROM THEIR CURRICULUM, AND EVERY SCHOOL ANSWERED THE CALL. PROJECTS RANGED BOTH IN CONTENT AND LOCATION. FIRST YEAR TUTOR DAVID MACRITCHIE DESCRIBED NIKLAV’S PROJECT: NIKLAVS'S WORK IS CHARACTERISED BY A HIGH LEVEL OF ‘HOLISTIC DESIGN’ CONSIDERATION - HIS AIM WAS ALWAYS TO PRODUCE A PRACTICAL AND AT THE SAME TIME POETIC SPACE FOR THE ACTIVITY - IN THIS CASE A SMALL STUDY LIBRARY AT ST. ANDREWS. HIS WORK CONTINUES TO HAVE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF CONSTRUCTION AND HE HAS STRONGLY ENGAGED WITH THE WAY THAT NATURAL LIGHT WOULD ENTER THE DEEP-PLAN BUILDING AND HOW DIFFERENT ANGLES OF SUNLIGHT MIGHT BE USED IN VARYING WAYS AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF YEAR. HE WAS ALSO KEEN TO REFERENCE LOCAL TRADITIONAL MATERIALS AND HIS PLACEMENT OF THE DESIGN SHOWS A GOOD AWARENESS OF THE OPPORTUNITIES OF THE SITE (ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE CATHEDRAL GROUNDS) FOR DRAMATIC VIEWS AND SHELTER. THE BUILDING PLAN PROVIDES A RANGE OF PLACES TO STUDY AS WELL AS PROTECTING THE BOOKS FROM DIRECT LIGHT. KEY IS THE BUILDING SECTION THAT INCLUDES A COMBINATION OF VARIABLE CEILING SHUTTERS TO PROVIDE INCREASED INSULATION IN WINTER OR, BY HARNESSING STACK EFFECT, TO EVACUATE UNWANTED DIRECT SOLAR GAINS IN SUMMER. THIS INFORMED THE SCHEME AS A WHOLE.
