Η έκθεση αυτή αποτελεί τη δουλειά των τελευταίων τεσσάρων χρόνων.
This exhibition represents my work of the last four years.
Χρόνια επαγγελματικής, κοινωνικής και προσωπικής απομόνωσης· απογοήτευσης και απόστασης από τα κοινωνικά, πολιτιστικά και πολιτικά δρώμενα, που έφερε την ανάγκη επανεκτίμησης των πραγμάτων και εύρεσης νέων και ουσιαστικότερων αξιών.
Years of professional, social and personal isolation, of disillusionment and distancing from the social, cultural and political affairs, which stressed the need for reappraising things and looking for new and more meaningful values.
Χρόνια που τα χαρακτήρισε σε προσωπικό και δημιουργικό επίπεδο, η εσωστρέφεια, η περισυλλογή και η αυτοκριτική.
Years characterised, on a personal and creative level, by introversion, meditation and self-criticism. And that’s where the creation of these works stems from.
Από εκεί προέκυψε η δημιουργία των έργων.

Σ’ ένα απόλυτα προσωπικό ύφος, ο Νίκος Λαγός επεξεργάζεται ένα σώμα εικονιστικών αναφορών τις οποίες ενσωματώνει, συνδυάζει και μετασχηματίζει σε έργα ευφάνταστα, και πρωτότυπα, οργανώνοντας το ζωγραφικό πεδίο των αφηγήσεών του. Μέσα από την έντονη χρωματικότητα ή τη σχεδόν μονοχρωματική απόδοση, τη σχηματοποίηση και την απλοποίηση, οι συνθέσεις του παραπέμπουν, άμεσα και συνειδητά, σε παιδικές ζωγραφιές ή γκράφιτι. O χώρος τους, τις πιο πολλές φορές, παρουσιάζεται ασφυκτικά «κατοικημένος», δίνοντας την αίσθηση μιας ιδιότυπης κατάστικτης επιφάνειας, ενός μεταμοντέρνου χειρογράφου κώδικα ή ενός οπτικού γρίφου, μιας σημειωτικής γραφής όπου η σύνδεση ανάμεσα στα σημαίνοντα και τα σημαινόμενα, τη φυσική παρουσία και τη νοητική κατασκευή, κυριαρχεί.
In a highly personal style, Nikos Lagos processes a body of pictorial references which he combines, integrates and transforms into original, imaginative works and organises the painterly field of his narratives. Through intensive colour or an almost monochromatic rendering, through schematisation and simplification his compositions directly and deliberately allude to children’s paintings or graffiti. Most of the times their space appears densely ‘inhabited’, giving the impression of a peculiar dotted surface, a handwritten postmodern code or a visual riddle, a semantic script dominated by the connection between signifier and signified, between physical presence and mental construct.
Με εξαιρετική αντίληψη ρυθμού, ισορροπίας και δομής, μορφές, σύμβολα, λέξεις, γράμματα, προτάσεις και γλωσσικά παιχνίδια, συνωθούνται και συμβιώνουν σε μια άρρηκτη και διαδραστική σχέση μεταξύ τους, χαρτογραφώντας λαβυρινθώδεις μικρόκοσμους και κατευθύνοντας στα όρια μιας εντύπωσης, δυνατής και αυθόρμητης. Η σκηνοθεσία των έργων και η εικαστική τους πραγμάτωση, παρά την απλότητά τους, δίνουν το έναυσμα για συνειρμούς με πολύ πιο σύνθετα δεδομένα προς μια περιοχή αλληγοριών σχετικά με τις αγωνίες της ύπαρξης, σε μια κρίσιμη και μεταβατική, αντιφατική και θρυμματισμένη εποχή. Ο δημιουργός, έρχεται να μιλήσει, με συνοχή και καθαρότητα, για τις εμμονές του, να αναδιφήσει στα ίχνη μιας εσώτερης αναζήτησης, να καταστήσει ορατά, ως ψυχικά αποτυπώματα, τα βιώματα, τα συναισθήματα και τις σκέψεις του, να καταγράψει και να εξομολογηθεί την ποιητική της ανολοκλήρωτης προσπάθειας και την ηθική του αδιεξόδου, να απευθυνθεί, να αναστοχασθεί και να επικοινωνήσει, να συνδιαλεχθεί με τις επιθυμίες της παιδικής ηλικίας, τις ανασφάλειες και τους φόβους της ενήλικης ζωής, να εμβαθύνει σε στερεότυπα και ταυτότητες, κοινωνικούς ρόλους και συμπεριφορές, να απεικάσει τη ζωτική του σχέση με τον κόσμο, να επαναπροσδιορίσει τη στάση του απέναντι σε πράγματα και αξίες μέσα από μια επίπονη και σκληρή διαδικασία ωριμότητας, υπέρβασης και ανασύνταξης. Χωρίς να στερούνται ανατρεπτικού πνεύματος και καταλυτικού χιούμορ, οι συνθέσεις του Νίκου Λαγού αποκαλύπτουν και εικονοποιούν τις εσωστρεφείς διαδρομές του, αντανακλούν έναν εσωτερικό τρόπο βίωσης και μετάπλασης της πραγματικότητας, έναν ιδιαίτερο ψυχισμό, συστήνουν μια εναλλακτική, άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα, πρόσληψη της ζωής, των βεβαιοτήτων, των αντιφάσεων και των ανατροπών της.

With an impeccable sense of rhythm, balance and structure, his forms, symbols, words, letters, phrases and lingual games jostle and coexist in an unbreakable, interactive relationship as they chart labyrinthine microcosms and point to the limits of a powerful and spontaneous impression. The staging of the works and their visual realisation, for all their simplicity, trigger mental associations with much more complex elements in the direction of allegories about the anxieties of existence in a critical, transitional, contradictory and fragmented age. The artist comes to talk of his obsessions in a clear, coherent way: to follow the traces of an inner quest, to render his thoughts and experiences visible as imprints of the soul; to record and confess the poetics of an unfinished effort and the ethics of the impasse; to address, reflect and communicate; to converse with the desires of childhood, the fears and insecurities of adulthood; to probe into stereotypes and identities, social roles and behaviours; to depict his vital relation to the world, and redefine his attitude towards things and values through a long and arduous process of maturity, transcendence and regrouping. Without lacking in subversive spirit and catalytic humour, the compositions of Nikos Lagos reveal and portray his introverted itineraries, reflect an inner way of experiencing and remoulding reality, a special psychological condition, and convey an alternative—and highly interesting—perception of life with all its certainties, twists and contradictions.
