Environmental center for information and recuparation of the sea turtle Caretta-Caretta at Laganas Bay Zakynthos

This thesis deals with the design of an Environmental Protection and Information Center for the Caretta-Caretta Sea Turtle on the island of Zakynthos. The aim of the project is to tackle the increasing problem of biodiversity reduction of the island, focusing on the sea turtle as it is an endangered species. Specifically, is proposed to build a center that combines the necessary functions into a single unit. It consists of three autonomous building units, which are connected by outdoor and semi-outdoor paths. The first section is public and hosts an environmental information center where the visitor is informed about the sea turtle. The second, which is a semi-public area, is located in the center of the building complex and the first floor includes the administrative services. At the lower level, there are the nursing homes, which, together with the third section of the tanks for the injured animals, constitute the center’s treatment zone. These sections are distinguished by their functions. From the first moment we meant to relate the design of the center to the existing natural landscape. The complete harmonization of the topography of the area as well as the highlighting of the natural features, were the main aspiration but also the basic idea of the project. The purpose of the center is to become the reason for raise awareness of the locals about animal population while at the same time focusing the island’s tourism development on ecotourism. 9

Design principles

Functional proposal analysis.

A. Public section

1. Full harmonization of the shell in the topography of the area. 2. Creation of construction with mild local interventions. 3. Attempt to modulate construction with the natural landscape 4. Elevations as a continuation of the natural environment

The composition consists of 3 autonomous building units with a different functional character. Α. Public character (Environmental Information Centre) Β. Semi-public character (Administration areas, nursing areas) C. Private character (Reservoirs for the stay of injured animals)

The structural system of the module is mixed, made of wood and reinforced concrete and the overall shape is defined by a wooden roof. The shelter is a wooden walkable roof that allows for an outdoor course and the endpoints on either side are immersed in sand. It is organized by a rhythmic sequence of wooden double V-shaped columns and is characterized by transparency, which is interrupted by two autonomous geometric shapes, a normal rectangle and a cylindrical one.

10

B. Semi-public section

C. Private section

Establishing a public route

This section is defined by two levels and consists of a non-accessible roof. It seeks through a technical system of flare-ups and tensions of the covered surface to restore the continuity of the sand dune system. It is characterized by transparency and extroversion.

An artificial cave made of uncoated painted concrete housing the recovery tanks of the injured turtles. The visitor has the possibility of a visual approach of the guest animals through an outdoor route which penetrates into the cave at a higher level to go unnoticed.

Charting the course with different lengths and widths, enlargements and narrowings, indicates directions. Through different altitude levels, multiple visual escapes and sightings are offered and alternative routes are available to select or avoid operations.

Design Idea The design idea proposes a flexible architectural system that has the potential to adapt in a range of physical disaster and humanitarian crisis, in order to efficiently counter them and provide the building blocks for local societies to hastily recover. Therefore, the proposed architectural model, capitalizes local conditions, materials and traditional construction practices, while proposing familiar architectural forms to the local population, in unison with the natural environment. Key aspect of the proposed model is speed, flexibility and adaptability, while engaging local stakeholders and inhabitants in the construction process. The goal is to provide to the local communities a tool to swiftly adapt to the variable landscape and weather conditions in order for them to be sustainable and prosperous. Minimum construction unit | modulo The system consists of a minimum construction unit that has all necessary interfaces in order to be expanded and adapted. This unit consists of a structural frame made out of bamboo, that creates a uniform structural system, consisting of three distinct parts: the platform, the support columns, and the canopy.

Kaira Looro / Architecture for peace, Emergncy opetation Center for the resolution of humanitarian emergencies in Africa.

The 3D unit is reproduced, following a basic grid defined by the extreme independent piles. The main axis of development of the system is a linear course of communication defined by the connection of the corridors of the units. Reproduction is done in three ways. The parallel displacement, the merging and the mirror transfer of the units. Following this methodology, the system becomes flexible, as it can be multiplied in various ways, versatile and volatile as it can be adapted to the respective circumstances, but also to the different scale requirements of the emergency. Depending on the combination method, the natural environment is integrated and penetrated into the structure, creating different qualities of open and closed spaces with extroverted or introverted character. The goal of the construction process is to be a part of a community ritual in order to strengthen social bonds and be a community tool to quickly counter unemployment and emergency conditions at the same time. By engaging local stakeholders and inhabitants, you rely strongly on local supply chains and local economy, thus strengthening local circular economy within the existing social structure. The design and construction is based in a holistic and sustainable approach minimising the carbon imprint. 29

In this project the task was to design a wooden construction which carries posters, flyers and digital screens, regarding temporary events and activities that take place in Athens. The two parameters that needed to be taken into account in the design were its easy construction and deconstruction in order to be moved in different locations and its self- sufficiency in terms of electrical consumption. The solution that was presented, was chosen in order to comply morphological with the design specifications of the project such as the construction material (lightweight construction wood) and functional to enable the attitude as an information point. The construction and materials are conventional, in order to meet the modern technological requirements and to be readily available in order to achieve an economic result. The proposal would be constructed from impregnated pine timber in order to protect the wood from the effects of destructive agents and to increase the strength and the physical life of this material. Moreover, the woods were going to be planned to achieve the precise dimensions and to have friendly result for the human. The structure connection would be made with connecting wooden rectangular or trapezoidal cross-sections, which would keep the wood in

Urban Mark, Athens info point. Student competition by Hellenic Institute of Architecture, 2016

the distance. Holes in the wood contact points will permit the passage of galvanized cable for the final connection and stabilize the structure. For the roof two wooden triangular crates 5X14 cm. and metal corner would be connected to the uprights, onto which would be screwed a W.B.R plywood 22mm. and a new wooden frame 5X5 for boxing the photovoltaic panels. The construction would be mounted on a wooden frame with metallic “feet”, for air circulation and it would bring adjusters for the opportunity to sloped alignment landmarks, where it is necessary. The seats would be constructed from plywood in layers with intermediate “slats” 2 cm, in order to be kept at a distance and to be stabilized. The triangular seats would have holes in the middle for the passage of electrical wiring for lighting gaps with led lighting strips. The whole construction would be independent and it would be placed only by mechanical anchorage in order to prevent overturning due to wind pressure. Financial budget: 2.660 €.

Urban Planning Area-Desighn and synthesis of components of the urban fabric in Acharnes.

Initially in this project the question that was created, was if Σ.Κ.Α. could be a focal point. This question reasonably answered because the point is the connection of the railway lines between the city center and the suburbs. We try to highlight that under the condition that the trains of the region exist fully and were put into operation, with the appropriate infrastructure, the area of Σ.Κ.Α. could be a powerful attraction and could enhance the suburban railway network. The area is divided into two nodes, because of the many trains that penetrate. We can notice that these two nodes have different building methods (anarchy and mild). The proposal is based on trying to combine both sides that are broken because of trains. Keeping some key roads that existed in the region in the absence of trains, it is trying to be created a green attraction to public and private use, taking into consideration the social stratification (low economic strata) and the users of the area. The proposal configuration includes the reuse of the railway station, with the support of commercial and cultural use and the creation of central squares with small kiosks carrying their users and passers-by from side to side. It is created a facility from various green and concrete strips at different heights (like a horizontal grid), in order to easily access both vehicles and pedestrians. Finally it is created a neighborhood system, which includes residential complexes for local residents and roads, which are adapted to the soil contours and stripes of the grid creating green terraces. (Important note: The collage of this project combines my Architecture work with artworks from some of my favorite comic artists such us Francois Schuiten, Jean Giraud Moebius, Hugo Pratt and Otomo Katsuhiro)
