Special Event Art Programs Community Events Zentangle with Jo Mortland Drawing with Zentangle-like designs is easy to learn, fun and a relaxing way to created unique images using simple lines. The different “doodles” are used to fill spaces, which can be any shape or size. By dividing the larger space into smaller sections, and then filling each section with patterns, a unique image is created. They can be made any time, any place, with paper and a drawing tool. For this session, we will focus on circles and lines to see some of the many possible combinations. The designs are meant to be organic – no two are alike. You can invent your own! There is no right or wrong, just the Zen-like enjoyment of creating unique images. To see some of the possibilities, search for Zentangle online. You will be amazed! Dinner includes an Italian beef sandwich, chips and dessert. Tuesday, July 9 • 5:00-7:00pm • $16 Flower Pot with Janet Gonzalez Day program: Painted flower pot planter with candleholder inside, and flowers. Monday, July 15 • 2:00-3:00pm • $16

Collage Workshop with Jo Mortland Collage is one method of self-expression through images. Using scissors, glue and magazine photos, it is possible to create unique art pieces. Other items can easily be added to make your artwork “mixed-media.” Some suggestions are text, beads, sequins, ribbons, or lace. You can also use photos that are special to you (photocopies please, not originals) of pets, vacations or people. Each collage is an original, with meaning just for you. In the workshop, you will learn how to make various images look like they belong together, by using color, line, shape, and texture to blend them. Tips on how to cut out individual images mean you take a picture and use just the parts you want. Collages can be made for inspiration, or just for the joy of working with beautiful pictures. Dinner includes a cheeseburger, coleslaw and dessert. Tuesday, July 16 • 5:00-7:00pm • $16 Wood Painting Art Program by Wendy Bring together the best pieces of your life! Plan Well, Age Well: Preparing for Retirement

People who were involved with their career for decades and used to certain activities may suddenly find themselves at a loss for what to do and how to give meaning to their life in retirement. Therefore, carefully planning how you will spend your time is the key to a successful transition. Many psychologists recommend retiring gradually, going to a part-time schedule before stopping working altogether. The extra time can be spent on developing new interests and hobbies or rediscovering old ones.

Social Services

You’re never too young or too old to prepare for your future. No matter your age, you can start planning for your retirement years now, and if you’re already retired, this is a great time to brush up on your knowledge of retirement issues. When planning for retirement, we do all realize the importance of saving enough money to sustain a comfortable life after one stops working. However, psychologists who study aging, emphasize that money isn't the only thing you need to create a happy retirement.

21

Throughout their lives, many people think about giving back to society by volunteering but often feel overwhelmed with work, families and other responsibilities. During retirement years you can pursue these meaningful activities that you never had time for earlier in life. Volunteering can be an interesting activity that will inspire you and allow you to meet new people and develop friendships. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. Niles Senior Center provides a comprehensive array of programs to help you develop your hobbies and interests. There are also multiple opportunities for volunteering and assisting staff in organizing and facilitating activities. The Senior Social Work team of dedicated professionals can provide you with psychological support and assist with planning for a successful transition to retirement. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Angelika Danek, Senior Social Work Coordinator at (847) 588-8460.

Join Us for the Discussion Group: Grief, Loss & Change

Senior Social Services

In addition to counseling and case management services, our Senior Social Work Department offers the following support groups (there is no cost to attend groups but registration is required, please call 847-588-8460): Caregiver Group - This monthly group offers support to family and friends caring for loved ones. The group is a source of emotional help and practical guidance that provide an opportunity to relieve stress and interact with other caregivers. Parent Group - A support group that is available for senior parents coping with the demands of caring for medically, emotionally or financially dependent adult children. Grief and Loss Group – This group supports seniors coping with grief and bereavement as well as other types of losses. In addition, we also offer the following service: HERO Program - Niles Helping Elders through Referral and Outreach (HERO) is a community-based system for identifying and helping older adults at-risk physically, emotionally, socially or financially. If you are concerned about a senior who you feel may benefit from social work outreach, you can make a confidential referral by calling and saying, "I want to make a HERO referral." For information on Senior Social Work services and support, please contact Angelika Danek, Senior Social Work Coordinator at (847) 588-8460.
