"Old Fashioned Christmas" with Rochelle Pennington A heartwarming peek into the past captures the holiday spirit with author Rochelle Pennington as she highlights a time when Christmas shopping meant paging through a Sears Roebuck catalog and heading downtown to the local five-and-dime, where products lining store shelves were American-made. Her program will beckon a remembrance of a time when gathering around a radio to listen to the voices of Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Nat King Cole in December was a familiar feeling. It was also a time of letters addressed to the North Pole with wishes for choo-choo trains, record players, jack-in-the-boxes, cowboy suits, cap guns, and Shirley Temple dolls. The author’s power-point presentation, featuring nearly 100 vintage photographs and images, will be complemented by a large collection of Christmas antiques on display. Come and re-live those memories that guide our hearts homeward to the much-loved traditions of yesteryear. “Yule” enjoy it! Lunch includes a sloppy Joe sandwich, coleslaw and dessert. US Marine Corps Reserve/Village of Niles Annual Toys for Tots Drive
Once again, the Village of Niles has partnered with the local US Marine Corps Reserve with collecting toys for children in need. The goal is that every child gets a new toy this Christmas season. Through the Toys for Tots program, thousands of children in Illinois and many within the Niles community received a brand new toy, whereas without this program, it may not have been possible. Holidays were made brighter thanks to the generous donations of people like you. You can help this holiday season. A Toys for Tots drop off box will be located in the lobby of the NSC beginning November 1 through December 15. All donated toys must be brand new, never used and unwrapped. Thank you for making this season brighter for a child.
21 Coping with Grief During the Holidays
For example, a woman who recently lost her partner may dread the holidays, because they remind her of the memories and traditions she can no longer share with the person. Yet, rather than feeling that it is OK to take a step back from the celebrations this year, she may feel even more pressure to participate. In an effort to “protect” their mom from feeling sad, angry or lonely, well-intentioned children might “insist” that mom attend a family party. Kids may say, “Come with us, you’ll feel better,” but their mom may feel, “If I don’t go with you I’m letting you down.”
Social Services
While the holidays are a time of celebration for many, they can also be a challenging time for people grieving the loss of loved ones. Surrounded by images of happy faces and besieged by family gatherings, they may face unattainably high expectations to “feel good.” And holiday festivities can send difficult, mixed messages as grieving adults struggle with the sadness, fear and guilt that accompany the loss of a cherished person.
Offering grieving adults the support to express their grief is not something we, as a society, do easily. Loving children might genuinely want their parents to “feel better” and “move on,” yet they may inadvertently disregard their parent's true feelings. Thus, providing those with significant losses the time and freedom to share their feelings is very important. Even if they express emotions troubling for listeners to take in, offering nonjudgmental support can profoundly help them. Grieving people need to be able to trust that it’s acceptable for them to cry, be irritable or even feel angry during the holidays -- a time when people are “supposed to be happy.” Sometimes it can also help grieving adults to sit down one-on-one with a professional social worker to discuss their feelings and questions about the grief process. If you’re concerned about yourself or a friend in the community who is coping with grief, please call Melanie Amin at (847) 588-8460.
While this group will support people coping with grief and bereavement, we welcome participants managing other types of loss. Code of Conduct Participants are expected to maintain an accepted level of conduct and hygiene so as not to cause harm or distress to self or others. Disruptive behaviors that affect others will be immediately addressed and may call for immediate and/or permanent dismissal of the participant. Inclement Weather The Niles Senior Center will have a delayed opening on the days the Culver School is closed because of inclement weather or when travel is hazardous. Programs will be cancelled on a case by case basis; registrants will be notified. Parking Vehicles must be parked in a designated space. If a parked vehicle is taking up more than one space, it is not an acceptable excuse for another operator to do the same. Drivers should be aware that spaces in prime locations tend to fill up quickly. Depending on your time of arrival, the outer lots may be the best choice for parking. Should the staff witness or be notified of any issues in the Senior Center lot, including locked cars with engines running, parking illegally in or next to a handicapped spot, fender benders, and/or observed difficulty with driving, the police will be called to respond. Permission to Photograph Photos are periodically taken of participants in a class, during a special event or any other Senior Center function. These photos are for Village of Niles use and may be used in Village publications. Americans with Disabilities Act The Village of Niles intends to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by making reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. We hope that this will enhance our building’s appearance and make your efforts to be informed easier. If you or someone you know with a disability requires accommodations for a Village service or have any questions about the Village’s compliance, please contact Steven Vinezeano, Village Manager, Village Administration Building, 1000 Civic Center Drive, Niles, IL 60714.

Calling All Volunteers!!! Volunteers are the backbone of the NSC and we would not be able to do much of what we do without you. Your willingness to give of your time is truly appreciated. To allow everyone an opportunity to volunteer in the area they choose, the NSC has created a book listing all current and upcoming volunteer opportunities. From helping with a program, making phone calls, creating posters, assisting with projects, serving on a committee, delivering meals or being a friendly visitor, the book will always be up to date with a variety of projects to choose from. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help the NSC community, please visit our new volunteer office or see Jaymi.
