TRENDS At 46 years old, I’ve been able to see many different trends come and go, especially in the world of cars. There are always several styles and trends that pass, combining parts and features of each into one. But regardless of the many car trends, there is always one common thread that remains: the lowered vehicle. Just look at a few trends that we see on the roads today. First up, the “Stance Scene,” where you put on 19” (or bigger) wheels, and then you lower the car to where the fender arch almost rubs the tire or the bead of the wheel. We have all kinds of cars doing this today: Audis, Subarus, Mercedes, BMWs, Hondas, and yes, even the Minivan. And if that is not low enough, air rides are added to get them even lower. The next trend is “Boxes and Donk’s.” These are the cars that look like they are set on 4x4 chassis and have 24” rims or bigger. They look cool, but you’ll need a small ladder to get into them. All trends start with a tweak here and there, so that our cars can stand out in the crowd. Then someone mirrors what you have done and this cycle repeats itself, ultimately resulting in a - you guessed it - trend. Our first modifications to our cars are often simple – for example, tinting our windows or fixing up our stereo or wheels. Some people are never satisfied with what they do to their cars and get bored, eventually selling it to start another project. My point is when building your car, do what you want to do - not what everyone else is doing. Build YOUR car the way that makes you happy. There are going to be trends that never go away such as Lowriders, Hot Rods, Street Rods, and many more. Others will come and go. Bottom line is don’t worry about what people say about you car. It’s your CAR. Cool Car Patrick

‘66Calais

CADILLAC Text by Josh Jenkins Photos by Brandon Burrell, Burrell Images

ISSUE 04 | TUCKINLOW.COM

Dustin Leyshon has been a long time lover of large four door cars, so naturally when he saw this classic ‘66 Cadillac, he had to have it. After driving the lowmaintenance ride for about 6 years, Leyshon intended to make a few simple repairs – fixing the leaking rear window and changing the seats. Simple fix, right? As you know, there’s never a quick fix in the custom car world. The build will start out with something simple and eventually snowball into much more, evident by this Caddy. As Leyshon puts it, “I just wanted to repair the back window. The next thing I know, four of my friends are helping me take the body off the frame.” Once the body was off the frame, 1 1/8” was cut off of the top, allowing the rockers to sit even with the bottom of the frame. Custom crossmembers allow the frame to stay rigid and strong. In the front, the car is hammered with Slam Specialties RE8 airbags and external mounted shocks, and a custom built fourlink rear suspension keeps the rear end under the car. The Slam Specialties RE7 bags, paired with an AVS 7 Switch box, allow the rear of the car to be lifted and lowered at will. The Dakota Digital display mounted on the dash monitors the air pressure in the tank and bags. The 429 cubic inch engine was cleaned up and now, a custom built intake allows the heavy breather to take in all the air that it needs to move the beast down the road. No engine is ever happy unless it can breath out the air that it pulls in. The custom built two-inch

exhaust takes care of that, and the Flamethrowers mounted at the back of the car add a bit of flare while doing so. After the chassis and engine modifications were done, the body went back on its frame for some body modifications. The door handles, mirrors and side moldings were tossed aside and shaved to give the car a smooth look. The suicide rear doors add ample character to the car, and it looks like they belong there. GETBORED Designs spent many hours sanding and blocking body for the 2001 Jaguar Black Cherry paint to be laid down and be laser straight. Inside, you’ll find that the complete interior was gutted and customized. The front and rear seats are now recovered in black leather with a red leather contrast stitch, sewn up by Longo Upholstery. GETBORED Designs continued their work on the door panels, building the fiberglass speaker enclosures that house the Audiobahn mids and highs. To complete the overall look of the car, a set of 20x8.5” Centerline Smoothies was mated to a set of 245/35/20 Sumitomo Tires, which contributed to the already smooth and classic style of the Cadillac. Special Thanks: I would like to thank God for blessing me with great friends and family; John and the entire crew at GETBORED Designs; Travis (Shady); Eric; Robert; LB; Mike H.; Brent; John at Longo Upholstery; my club NO REGRETS; and anyone else whom I may have forgotten.

2013 Beatersville

Car & Bike Show Text and Photos by Meatball

Drawing some of the hottest pre-68 traditional cars, trucks, and bikes in the Midwest, the Beatersville Car & Bike Show is one of the coolest car events on the scene today. Shawn Blandford and his partner, Scott Shuffit, along with support from a great group of friends and family, make this one of the most anticipated shows of the season. Phoenix Hill Tavern plays host to this event, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting place. Located in the Phoenix Hill area of Louisville, KY, the tavern only adds to the cool aura of this show. Beatersville takes place every year on the Sunday before Memorial Day, and every year keeps getting better. To celebrate the event’s 8th year, Saturday night kicked things off with The Rev Up, which ISSUE 04 | TUCKINLOW.COM

included a line-up of bands and a burlesque show in the roof garden at Phoenix Hill. On Sunday, there were over 700 cars and bikes in attendance and loads of activities to keep spectators busy. Good bands, diverse vendors, and enticing food booths kept everyone busy, along with the various bars and The Miss Beatersville contest. There was even a wedding in the back lot this year. As usual, the award for ‘Beater of the Year’ was hotly contested, along with several other neat awards. If traditional hot rods, badass bikes, cool pin-up girls, hot bands, and a good time are your bag, this is the event for you.

CTS-V

Text and Photos by Koapono Patrick KPconcepts.com

Let’s be real: most custom car owners are of the male species. It’s not often you see a chick cruising in something far from stock, making this quick and low 2009 Cadillac CTS-V that much cooler. Owner Samantha McManus gives credit to her gear head father, who was into the loud and fast, for getting her into custom rides as a kid. It wasn’t until 2006 when she first started dating her now husband, Jordan, that her eyes were opened into the world of bagged trucks. Jordan has his own custom ride, but Samantha never had one of her own until the CTS-V. When she first bought the ride, Samantha just wanted some wheels and to her custom ride to roar when she hit the gas. So, she got the Vossen wheels, had the exhaust done, and added the “ITS HRZ” license plate. She was content with the work she had done. However, one night after having the car valeted, Samantha and her husband returned to her ride to see a smashed car door on the driver side. Bummed that she had to fix her ride, what she didn’t know was that “fixing” her car would

quickly snowball into something a bigger. Once the car was in the shop at Chaotic Rods, they thought if they had to repaint it, they might as well upgrade it. That led to getting the V Power hood and wanting to lower it. However, the only lowering kits they could find weren’t low enough for Samantha, which is when they chose to go with adjustable air ride suspension. The rear of the car couldn’t lay out due to the wheels being too wide, so the Chaotic Boys did a little sheet metal work and widened the fenders. Since they had to paint almost the whole car anyways, a clean graphic was added on to finish it off. Now, her and Jordan can enter both of their quality rides at shows together. They continue to enjoy hanging out at shows, meeting new people, and seeing what everyone else has built. With this being Samantha’s first custom vehicle, she says she couldn’t be any happier with how it turned out. Sometimes life gives you lemons, and Samantha was able to make some damn good lemonade.
